After about 30 minutes of use the Roomba repeatedly threw an error message and became entirely nonfunctional. Upon calling iRonot we were told the unit would need to be replaced. Since we saw multiple reviews saying the same error occurred with the second (and third) replacement Roombas within 2-3 months, we chose to simply return it and get an older model.

This vacuum is amazing! It's very gentle when traveling around the room not bumping too hard into furniture or walls. It also has a light sensor so it's cautious around shadows too. The front is squared off so it cleans well in corners. Part of the instructions is to vacuum at different times of the day so shadows change location to improve the mapping, it will map your house! When the battery gets low, it will go back to base and charge, then go out again to finish the cleaning job! You can schedule individual rooms once the house is mapped. Cup fills fast when you have dog hair. Watch the app because it tells you when it's full. When I say full, the cup was full and it was backed up into the area that the cup connects to. It had a hard time finding home. I told it to go home and it continued to work. Another con is the price. It's so expensive! Overall, it did a great job!

I decided to splurge and upgrade my $200 roomba and purchase this one.. well, 3 weeks in, it’s giving a cliff error message and said to replace the left wheel. Spent another $30 to replace the wheel and it still doesn’t work. Def not worth it.

Excellent Product But Lacking Minor Detail

Our family has had Roombas in our house for nearly 10 years. From the very first one, we realized the necessity of this little contraption and its ability to keep up with the fur tumbleweeds left behind by our two German Shepherds. Our daughter even named the Roomba Rosy (think “The Jetsons”). But as with any new technology, there were difficulties and details that needed improving. The second one improved upon the first, with brushless rollers and was more responsive and intelligent. But the need for battery powered virtual walls and the need to break down the machine to clean crevices that collect dirt, make it a little less than convenient. Still something was missing…. Bring in this new machine! And wow! The power, the technology, and the general design are above and beyond it predecessors. The design changes from small things, like a heavier base charger that doesn’t move as easily, top access of the dirt bin, and less openings in the machine for dirt to collect, make it easier to use and maintain. The technology capabilities in regards to the iRobot app and ability to utilize Google Assistant make it even more user friendly. Scheduling, varied power settings, status updates, and training the Roomba are some of the features available. But this is where the machine stumbles a little bit. I’ve had multiple times where a scheduled cleaning didn’t happen because the dust bin was registering “full,” when in fact it was not full. After a while on tinkering with it, I wiped down the sensors inside the vacuum where the bin sits. This seems to have fixed the problem, but it’s a little inconvenient. I would suggest an ability to override this feature. It is also nice that there are no towers/virtual walls to place around the house. The machine learns the house and the user divides up and names the different rooms. Again, a feature I would suggest is the ability to add hazards or blocks to keep the Roomba from entering dangerous areas (ie. stairs). We have a large separator between flooring from one room to the next which tends to get the Roombas held up, It would be nice to have the ability to have the Roomba avoid this. The fact that it is software issues rather than physical issues bodes well for the potential of future updates to the app to correct some of these problems. But even with these minor shortfalls, I would highly recommend this machine. Especially if you have pets!

So Far Great Vacuum W Great APP!

The setup was very easy from the initial unboxing, there was a software update and then just download the app and charge the iRobot. The sensors did their job, I have a stairwell and the iRobot new when to stop to avoid falling. The obstacle avoidance improved as the iRobot was run thru it's training programs and mapped the environment. The suction was very powerful and almost left my hardwood floors looking like they were buffed. The best part of the setup is the software! with this software invisible wall barriers are not needed so you avoid an expense. The software does 2 great things worth mentioning in my opinion, the scheduling and the mapping. I am able to schedule the cleaning during times when I am away from home in order to avoid the noisy cleaning. I also don't worry about it getting stuck as the mapping feature has already plotted the environment and the areas it can't clean. The mapping feature is so accurate that it pretty much looks like a legit floorplan. This allows you to clean specific rooms that need it instead of letting the Roomba run free and hope it gets to the area that needs cleaning. I definitely love this Roomba and it is a vast upgrade from the last one I owned which was a 6 series. The google option is pretty cool although not really necessary. There are only a few cons: the noise, its pretty loud but I understand the loudness is a by product of the suction power. in the dark the Roomba tends to loose sight of the floorplan but thats because the mounted cameras/scanners need light. Overall I Love it and definitely recommend for regular cleaning of hardwood floors...GREAT FOR DUST ALLERGENS!!

Ok Vacuum with Several Usability Issues

The iRobot S9150 is an S9 series roomba vacuum cleaner robot. This means it is a D shape and top of the line roomba. It is a pretty cool and sleek looking robot and surprisingly, didn't feel out of place in home with children with toys and other colorful things around. I honestly was expecting something that would feel more in place in a modern, dark/muted condo but this fits the decor of my home as well. Setup was pretty easy. Remove and plug in the base, dock the robot onto the base, then install the app. After the roomba had charged up, I was able to configure it for my home wifi, and then start the initial cleaning session. The initial cleaning session took 45 minutes to cover an area of about 200 square feet. This is something that would take me 7-10 minutes with my normal upright or maybe 12-15 minutes if I needed to use a smaller handheld vacuum closer to the roomba in size. That said, a big portion of that time is due to the roomba needing to map the entire environment. I already know where to go. There is a mode to do a "training" run with no cleaning. This supposedly lets the roomba generate maps faster. The reason cleaning makes things take longer is because the roomba will actually spend time in an area if it detects a lot of mess. It also needs to run slower to ensure it actually picks up everything. I say supposedly because looking at the history of jobs, the roomba took 45 and 44 minutes each on its two training runs. A second cleaning run actually went a bit faster at 35 minutes! A cleaning session once it had built its "smart map" took 41. It appears the only thing you can do with a "smart map" is subdivide the cleaning area into rooms so you can tell the roomba clean rooms 1 and 3 but not 2. While nice, what one expects is to be able to mark off areas the robot shouldn't traverse. Perhaps an area near a kid's room so the noise doesn't wake them. Perhaps some place where toys are typically left out weekdays but is free to be cleaned weekends. While the room divider feature can be horribly abused to set this up, it would be a pain and a lot of work. Quite disappointing the "smart map" really only supports one basic feature. The fact that having a mapped cleaning area did nearly nothing to improve the cleaning time is also quite disappointing. The roomba did a pretty good job of getting everywhere with heuristics to help it ride over smaller obstacles like a ridge or lip between my hardwood and tile floors (going from the living room area into the kitchen). This has defeated robots before, heck, it's defeated young children, so I was pretty impressed. It was able to get up on some smaller bath rugs/mats that we use in front of the sink and house door though it sometimes pushed those around before they anchored against something and it could gain the traction to climb aboard. Still, reviewing the map when it was done, the map was pretty accurate so the robot clearly is able to compensate for scenarios like that where it may be spinning its wheels but not actually moving. The roomba did an ok job of cleaning during its first run. It wasn't as thorough or clean as I'd like but it got a lot. It did a good job cleaning at corners and along walls, so I was pleased with that. The major turn off was the noise level. I expect it's partly due to having a more powerful vacuum but the roomba ended up being pretty loud which goes against the idea of a robot quietly moving around and cleaning your home. If you're someone who got one of these primarily to either reduce noise while the robot cleans in your presence, you'd likely want to switch to a cleaning mode where the robot runs while you're sleeping or away. The noise is enough that while I'm sure the white noise machine in my kid's room would drown it out, it means the roomba would be a distraction if running when people are awake or resting. I'll need to do a run late at night but this could be the deal breaker for me. The roomba won't get distracted by you walking around while it's cleaning which is a good thing. It will also prompt you to empty the bin and let you know if you forget to reinstall it before ordering it to clean again. The app lets you save different cleaning profiles. So you can have it learn and map an upstairs level, basement, and other places. You can then specify within each profile different rooms and behavior for the roomba to take while cleaning. It seemed not to complain or recognize when it got stuck somewhere but would complain when a sock got caught in the brushes. Dealing with that just requires pressing the clean button once the issue is resolved. One thing to note is that the roomba will traverse through previously closed doors in an area that it has mapped. I'll need to check to see if there's a way to have it only clean known areas and to not explore further, even if it can. It is interesting seeing it get at the lip under cabinets and the fridge. I guess one aspect of future home design is designing for robot vacuum cleanability. The app is pretty easy to use and I found gives you some control over the noise level. You can choose between a "detailed clean" and a "quiet clean". That said, the "quiet clean" wasn't that much quieter. While the vacuum noise was lower the roomba gained a rattling like sound that was almost as loud. Perhaps the rotating sweeper noise just got more prominent. In any case, it means one is unlikely to be able to have a true "quiet mode" with this robot. The good news is that you can schedule cleaning. . .but if this is loud enough to disturb sleep, good luck if you have young children or a family where someone is almost always home. I started this evaluation with high hopes and ended with some disappointments. There are some things the robot does well. But the noise, cleaning performance, and relative lack of customization of cleaning route makes this a three star product.

I recall one of the first iRobot Roombas which came out, well many many years ago. I was fascinated by it but noticed my grandmother, who was getting up in the years, needed it a bit more than I did since she liked to keep her house tidy but was sometimes unable to keep up with the vacuuming. She also complained that she couldn't get under her bed and other areas to vaccum. I remember buying her one of the first iRoombas for Christmas and she absolutely loved it. She truly treated it like a little helper more than a vacuum. It served her well, for probably about 10 years before deciding it too was going to retire. I had always wanted to try a iRobot Roomba myself and finally, with the technology being much further advanced than those days, I decided to get on board. Receiving the iRobot Roomba was impressive because it really looks nice when you open it up and see what is in the box. It really reminds me of sort of an Apple-type product in that everything you get feels premium. It's very easy to configure and setup in just five to ten minutes. There is not really much to read either, most of what you do for setup, once you physically have everything in place, is simply told to you by the app itself. It pretty much couldn't be any simpler. I think if my grandma were around today even she could do it. The base connected to my wi-fi without any issue. The lights on the vacuum are pretty neat but I do think I had to go online to see what some of them meant. The unit will also sometimes talk to you to tell you status as well which is nice. Now, as someone who has two cats and two dogs we have a lot of pet hair. So I wondered how the iRobot Roomba would do getting all that hair out of our carpet? Also, how would it do with "learning" the layout of our somewhat odd shaped room? Well to answer both of those questions: it did quite well on both accounts. It picks up a good amount of hair each pass and would often have to be emptied a couple of times (the app would alert you to come empty) so it did seem to get a lot. I don't think it does quite a good of a job as using our very powerful push Shark vacuum in one pass but the big advantage of having a robot is you can have it do as many passes as it takes and it is effortless (aside from emptying the bin and pushing start on the app of course). In regards to learning the layout of our room, it only had one issue, after cleaning the room several times it gave me a mystical "MEMORY ERROR" which seemed odd but one quick visit to the iRobot site was resolved by simply resetting/rebooting the vacuum by holding two buttons down. After that it was back to cleaning without any issues. It's also really helpful to see the actual maps the Roomba is making by viewing them in the app. And you can see that the more it does one room the more efficient and quicker at cleaning the room the iRobot is becoming. Now you may wonder - but does it get stuck? Well during my weeks of use I had a single incident where the Roomba was cleaning and I got a popup on my app that said "Help I'm stuck!". I figured it had gotten wedged somewhere but when I went to find it, it was simply going back and forth into the base of our fireplace<?!>. So not sure what was up with that, once I moved it and restarted it was fine. That was the only incident I had in many cleanings over the course of a few weeks in regards to it becoming stuck and requiring human intervention to physically reset the unit. The fact that the app notifies you is great, otherwise you might come back two hours later and think all the vacuuming is done and see that the unit is stuck. Since you're going to get notifications in the app that is not a concern. I've owned this now for a few weeks and I really love the ease of use of it. Much to my disappointment though the cats do not show any interest in riding on the Roomba like in the funny Youtube videos. Our dogs ignore it. I suppose it gets ignored because it's not really as loud as a regular vaccuum cleaner. Still loud enough to annoy my wife though when we are watching tv but thankfully it does have a "quiet mode" which, I presume, is much better but less powerful. I just chose instead to run it when we are in a different room. Bottom line, this vacuum does a fine job. It's a lazy, but clean, person's dream device to own! Yes it's quite expensive (which is why I deducted one star) but I believe, if my past experience with iRobot is any indication, you are paying for long term quality. Sure you can find cheaper robot vacuums but who knows if they will last 10 years plus like my grandmas. The only downside here to also consider is, if you have multiple floors to clean, as we do you would really would need to buy another, or move it physically between floors all the time. All in all I really love the iRobot Roomba and there really is nothing cooler than being able to simply hit "START" and know your vacuuming is done for the day. I have found since we got this little fella that we keep our floors a lot cleaner!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The iRobot Roomba is my second robotic vacuum, the first is a Shark ION Robotic Vacuum. I must say that both robots pick up a lot of dust and dog hair, as I have two pups who shed quite a bit. I believe the iRobot Roomba does a slightly better job than the shark, but is also more costly. The Roomba also has an Apple app which makes scheduling cleaning times a bit simpler. On top of it, I can now ask Alexa (Echo) to start cleaning using my roomba. My first go at trying to use the app by connecting through WiFi failed, but succeeded on the second attempt. It did make scheduling which day and what time you wanted the robot to clean easier and this morning it started cleaning precisely at 9:00am as scheduled. I am still amazed at the amount of hair and dirt the Robot can pick up. What is even more amazing is that if I clean on Monday, Tuesday the dirt bin is full again. My home has laminate and also has carpet and rugs. Roomba does an admirable job on both. It is a bit noisy, but it is alright when it is able to do a neat job. A robotic vacuum is certainly a luxury, but if you can leave your home, go to work, and come home to a clean home, it's worth every penny. It's one of those items, that you didn't think you needed, but find it indispensable once you have it. It is necessary to spend about 5 minutes once a week to clean the unit to keep it running perfectly. It is not a messy or difficult job especially after you've done it a couple of times. Roomba also learns the home layout using smart maps which is really good. One of the biggest differences I see between shark and Roomba is that when shark runs out of charge, it searches for the charging station for a long time as it doesn’t have a map feature, so it runs out of battery sometimes and dies. Roomba, on the other hand, swiftly goes to the charging station without any issues when it is time. It is a great product from iRobot. Love it and would definitely recommend to my friends.

This is a great robot vacuum. It does what it advertises and has a large enough dust/dirt bin to cover a large surface area (our first floor is over 1000 square feet) and we can go at least two runs without worrying about the bin being full. The only issue has been it finding its way back to the base. It tends to get lost right before it gets there and shuts down. I expect this will improve as it does more runs and as the software is updated. This is the only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars.

I love this vacuum. I have 2 dogs, 5 cats and a 6 month old baby boy so needless to say, we have a lot of vacuuming. When removing from the box, the set up is really easy. Just place the home base in a location that has a couple of feet clearance on either side and upto 4ft in front and that's it. Then download the app to your device, go through the setup with the app and thus will connect your iRobot to your WiFi network. And that's it, it's setup. Super simple. To use the vacuum you can simply press the clean button on the vac and it will do its thing or you can hit clean on the app and again it will do its thing. You can allow it to map out your home too, this takes a few cleans but once done you can ibstruct the robot to clean in certain rooms only. A great option. Thus thing is quiet too, I was shocked at the lack if noise it makes and even more shocked at how much dirst this picks up but can also store. Once full the robot will let you know it's ready to empty and that's as easy as just opening the flap on the top and pulling out the cartridge. Overall I really do recommend this. It makes life easier and cleaner

The iRobot - Roomba s9 Wi-Fi Connected Robot Vacuum is very easy to set up and start using right away. It was an easy install of the app on our iPhone. We have a 3600 square foot home with both tile and carpet through out. We especially like how the iRobot was able to get along the edges of the wall and corners with the revolving brush. We have two large, short haired dogs, so getting the edges and corners is a must. The iRobot cleans for a very long time on one charge and covers a lot of ground before returning to the base. The biggest drawback is the need to manually empty the machine when it gets full with dirt and hair. Also, we wish the iRobot would stop and alert that it needs to be emptied. It does notify you that it’s full, but will continue to clean. We wish this model had the auto empty feature like some of the other models, but are happy with it’s ability to clean our carpets thoroughly and get the corners and edges where other robot vacuums we have tried have failed. Overall, it is a very good robot vacuum that does a great job.

    Worse Roomba so far

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was iRobot faithful customer. I used 3 different models of Roomba in past 11 years. Last year I’ve purchased Roomba S9+ with automatic dirt disposal unit. I have used S9+ Roomba for a full year now. Here is the summary of the performance. For the starter mapping process is not so straight forward. Mapping has to be done during daylight for sufficient light, all doors should be open so if you decide to vacuum for example walk-in-closet later the area would be already on the map but you also can exclude it by putting keep out zone to the map. With all doors open it’s unavoidable for Roomba being trapped somewhere. So be prepared to detangle it, in order to continue. So, it has to be days off to follow little Roomba everywhere. I spent 4 days to map the floor with small 4 bedrooms and one hallway. Roomba decided that mapping process is over abruptly, map looked remotely like real floor plan. The simple floor layout looks on Roomba map as old Tetris game- a lot of sticking out rectangles. Keep out zones is a nice feature, but it doesn’t work. Almost every day Roomba got stuck exactly in the red keep out zones. The scheduling process should be a time saver for working people. I made easy schedule for Roomba to clean one side of rooms every other day. Scheduling doesn’t work either. Roomba vacuum hallway and dock. I have to send Roomba to vacuum though the app every day. Little side brush lost it straight bristles in first few day, that’s an unfortunate design. Roomba keep sending messages ‘the path is blocked, can’t continue’ while nothing is on the way. I spent more time on the phone with support service than I care for. The whole year we went back and forward. To be fair they tried to help. First, they though the brush head was faulty, it was replaced. Second, battery is not good- replaced. Third, I received the band new vacuum. No improvement. Support service was eager to help but they can’t fix bad product. After a while support service was accusing me of having wrong carpet, wrong floor plan, wrong home base position. I’ve asked for refund. (I bought S9+ when the price was $1.599 so its quite significant sum for a vacuum). Needles to say they refused to refund and dropped my calls ever since. My advise do not buy S9 models. They do not work.

There are less expensive "robot" vacuums, but from my experience with one of them, the new iRobot vacuum provides a cut above in performance and capabilities. I had a three year old "robot" vacuum that was still working when I obtained this iRobot as an upgrade. My old unit did not have any wifi capabilities nor did it interact with my smartphone. All of these two features are added with the iRobot version. SETUP Instructions are actually not bad even if I misunderstood the setup step and which button(s) to push to connect my unit to my Android smartphone. After several unsuccessful attempts I re-read the instructions and found out that I should ignore the pictures and just follow the words on the instruction. There are two buttons to push (out of the three on the unit) and using those completed the connection with the smartphone. It should be noted that the connection was not complete on the first try as the process hung up in the middle of the connection; another try was fast and flawless. USE AND PERFORMANCE First test was to manually launch the iRobot and to see what it would do. The unit is louder than my old unit. The iRobot has a much larger brush underneath though it has only one external side brush whereas my old unit had two brushes that extend for edge cleaning. The cleaning performance was quite remarkable and the iRobot navigated the transition between berber carpet and hard wood floors with ease. Actual cleaning of both was quite good as the unit picked up debris off the berber carpet after several passes Wood floor performance was exceptional on the first pass. PET FRIENDLY My cat would stop and watch the iRobot instead of fleeing like she would do with the older robot vacuum. She would even creep up to it so the unit passed this test. SCHEDULED TEST There are so many options here that you'll just need to play with the unit to see what you need, but you can select from a myriad of days of the week and times to run as you need on a scheduled basis. You can even pick ONE DAY and ONE TIME and run the unit and this is what I did. It worked flawlessly and returned to the charging dock. CHARGE LIFE I observed about 54 minutes of actual vacuuming time from a complete charge. The unit returned to the docking station without issue. CLEANING Debris catcher is quite solid and the button to release the BOTTOM of the catcher is a grey button under the grey debris container handle. Make sure to hold the debris container over a trash can and understand the bottom is what releases debris. You'll also find inside a filter (turn the debris container upside down with debris door open and you'll see the filter. I used a hand held vacuum to remove excess debris and animal hair from that. OVERALL IMPRESSION This is a high quality unit that is priced at the top of the robots - again, you can get cheaper but they are cheaper quality. This robot has a long-term quality feel and performance that would make the purchase price more acceptable; I am actually surprised my older and much cheaper robot vacuum lasted three years; this iRobot unit seems like it will easily outlast that older/cheaper unit which makes the purchase price premium more acceptable.
