Complete Junk! As an IT Professional I've configured thousands of devices, I bought this for my mother as a gift. Configuring it was a nightmare and it just doesn't work no matter how many times I tried to get it running. Took it back to Best Buy and bought a Fire Stick.

The connection between the cell phone and the HDMI plug wasn’t strong enough to maintain a good connection for the screencasts. (8 feet)

Very difficult to get set up and use. Very poor instructions. Had to call twice for help.

Amazing little device! I'll be packing this in my work laptop bag wherever I go as it is perfect for taking on the go to display content wirelessly to most monitors and TV's (those that have HDMI at least). For conference rooms and meetings this is essential as it eliminates the hassle of trying to carry adapters for the various different setups that are out there, and eliminates having to be "in the right spot" to get to the cables for the display which more often than not is not the best spot for presenting to a group. It's an absolute must for devices that don't have many ports or have special ports like display port which require specific adapters. I've used it at home and at work to test out a few scenarios and it works flawlessly from by Windows 10 (my work and home computer) and even my android phone and tablet. To use it is as easy as plugging it in to a free HDMI port on the display you want to cast to and plug it in to a USB port for power (most TV's made within the last 10 years have one and even if not, a simple extension cable which is included with AC adapter you'd use to charge a phone would work too). From there follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the device to the internet (which isn't required but helpful if you need to be connected on Wifi) for whatever device you're connecting from. In Windows/Android and even iOS it's pretty easy to initiate sharing from there. In terms of quality, the picture is great and I'd definitely recommend using the 5 GHZ band, especially if you're doing anything like scrolling through documents or PowerPoints as it makes it smoother. I wouldn't hook it up expecting to play games as there's just too much latency even on the 5GHZ band to make it smooth/lag free. Video even in small frames seems to be okay but not great and when in full screen with lots of movement in the video there's definitely noticeable artifacts like a poor quality VHS/DVD. For everything else, browsing the web, sharing presentations, Zoom meetings and typical presentation type things it works great for me and I will be using it for that for sure! Goodbye to the cluster of cables/adapters for VGA/HDMI/DVI, etc. Overall, it's a great product and does what it should while being super easy to configure/use. I would recommend it for standard types of content like the web, photos, email, presentations, but not for playing 3D games and movies full screen.

Terrible. I couldn’t get this to work. I had multiple people try. Then Best Buy tried to charge me $100 for a geek squad repair. What a waste.

This item does not let you transfer shows from your devices to your tv like the salesman said it would. It was a big waste of money. It does nothing I needed it for.

Did not work for what i needed it to do and i had to do a reset on tv after trying it.

The device didn't work and when i tried to return it i was turn away because i didn't have the box

This item didn’t work correctly. The website required to pair this item to our WiFi wouldn’t work. Tried to pair for several days. By the time we got fed up, it was too late to return and customer support was no help.

Simply does not work using a windows 10 laptop. Service was nice but not knowledgeable. No level 2 support.

There is a bad connection, even when the phone is only one foot away from the adapter. I would never suggest this brand.

My interest in the j5 Screencast device is as a teacher. With the widespread availability of big flat-screen TVs, it makes sense to make use of them to display a slideshow or graphical content while conducting a lecture. The problem is that it’s often inconvenient to use a long HDMI cable to do so. Enter the j5 Screencast. The Screencast is a small device with a USB connector at one end (for providing power), and an HDMI connection at the other end. Most modern TVs have both USB and HDMI ports not too far apart, and that’s the perfect setup for the Screencast. To get started, all you have to do is plug it in. j5create even includes a USB extension cable in case your USB port is too far away from the HDMI port to use the device as is. The way the Screencast works is that it creates its own little wifi network. You join the Screencast’s network by selecting its SSID from your wifi setup page and then entering the password. Here’s where I first ran into trouble: the device wouldn’t accept the wifi password that is on the screen and in the documentation! After trying to figure it out on my own, I called tech support, who suggested that I perform a factory reset. Fortunately, this worked and I was able to use the default password. I wasn’t impressed that I had to do a reset out of the box, but I was glad that it worked. When I realized that I had to join a different wifi network than what I normally use at home, I wondered how the device would support mirroring internet content from my phone to the TV. The answer is that you let the device join your home network, then that signal is provided to your phone when you join the device’s network. Once I was properly connected, it was time to give it a try. On my Apple iPhone, I swiped up from the bottom and chose “screen mirroring”. It listed the Screencast device as a viable option for casting, but that’s where the fun ended. My iPhone 8 using iOS 13.6 failed to connect to the Screencast. It’s possible that there is some sort of security policy on my corporate phone that is preventing that, but I could not find any documentation to help me with that, so using the iPhone was a no-go for me. To make sure that this wasn’t just a problem with iOS devices, I tried it with my iPad, and it worked fine, with the exception that I couldn’t cast HD content from Amazon Prime, and it wouldn’t work with Sling TV. It did, however, work with Hulu. I also dusted off an ancient iPod Touch, and screen mirroring worked just fine on that as well. Lastly, I tested it with an Android phone and had no problems. While watching video in an app on my iPad, I thought it would be good to see it on a larger screen. The devices were able to “talk” to each other, but only the audio from the app was cast to the TV. It seems that there are too many restrictions and/or glitches to reliably cast videos using this device. I am aware that some video services, such as Amazon Prime, protect their content with HCDP, but it’s still disappointing and limiting to run into this. For my original purpose of sharing slideshows in class, this device works just fine. I’m not sure I’d want to pay the full $55 just for that purpose, however. Chromecast serves the same purpose for less.

I am an educator and travel from building to building providing training to staff along the way. Finally I have a way to quickly plug into a projector and still use my own device. And the beauty of this system is I am not tied to a corner of the room where all the cables usually come out of the wall. It is wireless so I can be anywhere within range and still project (cast) to the projector. This device will allow you to connect any device and stream content. You get 2 options for connecting. The system itself has it's own signal and you can connect to it.. This I found to be my preferred method when I am traveling to different locations. However when I am in one location for a longer period of time, or at home for instance, you can connect this to your local wifi network and then you can cast to this from other devices on your home network. This device will support a lot of cats options such as Airplay, Chromecast, and Miracast for example. This allows you to connect Windows, Mac, iOs and Android devices. You plug the HDMI end into an open HDMI port on your TV and the USB end into an open USB port on your TV (this provides the power) or to a USB port/plug in the wall.

I’m not sure why Best Buy is selling this product. I couldn’t connect to the manufacturer server . Which is the only way to pair. Seems outdated or something waste of my time.
