Works like a charm and in addition it charges the phone while you are showing photos or streaming something from your mobile phone to the TV. Works as advertised. Will definitely recommend this to my camping friends.

There are similar products that do a better job of through power. For example, I was doing some work on video production and used this device to drive an external Seagate Hard Drive for recording. This arrangement requires dongles to connect a BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle, Presonous FirePod 10 for sound capture, and the Seagate Drive. Well, the power irregularities made sound capture a frustrating pain. I should note, I had the option of a Zoom H4, which again requires the USB dongle. Doing this while connected to a USB hub produces frequency shifts that don't work so well. In combination with another dongle like the this j5 (AV adapter made by Apple) together does work. For a semi-permanent set up, I prefer a nice docking station to provide power, a second Thunderbolt 3 (so don't have sacrifice a port) with multiple ports that I need like HDMI, eSATA, Firewire, network, etc. Most notably, I like the docking station for power to my MacBook Pro 15". As I said, the j5 and its Apple counter part work well in portable operations, but they do carry some frustrating limitations.

Posted .Obtaining another Thunderbolt 3 for different capabilities can be achieved with a JCD382. It contains 2 USB-C ports where one is a Thunderbolt 3; it can be used for added displays, faster data-transfer rates and even charging. All while also providing SD card reading and more. When we don’t have internet service, I just download to my ipad and connect the HDMI to this connector. Works like a charm.

The extra port certainly came in handy for charging at the same time. We haven't tried the HDMI. This was much cheaper than the Apple verson and did what we needed it to do.
