Just plug in my laptop's power cable and this adapter, and I'm rolling. I've got a separate USB hub plugged into this adapter, and together they have no trouble handling my big widescreen monitor, mouse, keyboard, USB network adapter, and other peripherals simultaneously. This adapter doesn't require any external power. I also used it once to connect my Samsung Galaxy S8+ cell phone to my TV, which was pretty cool.

I can connect my hdmi monitor and a usb device (keyboard, card reader, or usually my iPhone). Note that the female type-c jack is for charging only, as I understand it, but I don't have any other devices that use that port. But it means I can connect my charger to this thing too, so it all runs through one port on the MacBook.

Haven’t used the usb-A port yet. Use display settings in windows to adjust to your preferences. Only concern is it gets warm after hours of use.
