Purchased 11/09/20. Have to say the setup was super easy, it’s easy to operate and sounds killer. Very happy with the wireless surround sound speakers, the bar itself and the sub. Great dialogue, music playback, bass and surround experience. Don’t have a tv with e-arc but look forward to trying atmos once we upgrade. Tried Sonos before this and returned because it wasn’t overly impressed for the price. Purchased this on sale $200 off and couldn’t be happier. It’s literally half the price of the Sonos 5.1 and sounds 95% as good. Other than the bulky size and giant sub (which kicks big time) It’s perfect. You can’t realistically hang it on the wall and that’s why I gave it 4/5 stars.

Sounds really good. If you like bass you’ll love this. Also I like this sound bar because you can do surround and it really sounds like something is going on behind or around you. Great for the movie experience. Lastly I love that you can still hear the voices and the bass is not too over powering !

I will tell my friends to buy JBL Soundbar Systems

Considering the price point, this system is impressive! For a standard sized living room the 5.1 sound is great and the base is exceptional. (Window shaking good) I was planning to spend 2-3 times this amount for a full system and decided to this a try before putting speaker holes in my ceiling. Needeless to say, once I tried this system, I never looked back.

This product is great, there is only 1 technicality. You cannot hang the soundbar behind your TV because the surround speakers disconnect. We have found that if you put it under the TV there is less connection issues and it works great. Sound quality is great.

Awesome sound, when it works right. Occasionally it won't work properly with the TV and you have to reset it. Other than that it is awesome. Even have my old turntable and receiver going to it with an adapter. It sounds better than the massive Kenwood speakers we used to have.

First off, let me say that this soundbar packs a punch! I was a bit skeptical when I ordered, but I was pleasantly surprised once I got it all setup and calibrated.
I'll do a quick, to-the-point review for you guys:
Packaging:
All items were securely placed in a standard soundbar/subwoofer box, locked in place by foam insert and plastic straps, and sealed with packing tape. Very little room for damage during transport unless dropped from a substantial height.
Setup:
Only took about 15-20 mins for setup and calibration. Make sure to have the soundbar placed near decent wi-fi signal or else you will have troubles calibrating. The soundbar uses the Google Home app to seamlessly connect to your home wifi, however if you have an issue with using Google apps then I believe you can also try using Apple's Home app. The soundbar, speakers, and sub are also quite heavy! Make sure if you are mounting to attach securely to a stud.
Sound quality (Soundbar):
This thing boasts impressive sound for a soundbar! I have mine placed in an average sized room (15x20), front and center below the TV. The sound fills the room quite well with the ranges making even the lowest dialogue audible over my dyson fan on the highest setting. The Dolby audio really sits in well and provides a fully immersive experience whether watching movies or gaming and did not disappoint. My ceilings are about 12 ft. and flat surface so the low/mid settings work pretty well for my setup.
Sound quality (Rear Speakers):
The rear speakers function as well as you'd expect from battery powered speakers, but that doesn't mean that they are underpowered by any means. It took a few extra moments to get the right setup and calibration, but once I did it felt as if I had my own personal theater. The only downside to it is that the batteries die after about 8 or so hours of continuous playing, but that can be resolved by simply recharging them or just plugging them in using micro-USB (thus making them no longer "wireless"). This feature was one of the main reasons why I purchased this soundbar as I have no plugs near behind my sofa, so these were definitely a perfect choice and I have no regrets.
Sound Quality (Subwoofer):
MAN this thing can shake a room! To be honest, I usually do not expect much from Subwoofers that come with soundbars as they usually just are included to simply "fill a gap" and nothing more.. But this sub, once setup and properly placed, provided quite a surprise when I started up John Wick 3. Every. Single. Hit. was felt in my seat and I am definitely pleased.
Overall:
I would definitely recommend this combo to anyone that wants a high quality soundbar/subwoofer combo, with the added bonus of customizable placement of the battery-powered rear speakers AND Dolby Atmos compatible. There were many downsides, aside from the soundbar itself being quite thicker than other comparable bars and the need to remember to reattach the rear speakers back onto the soundbar every night. This soundbar gives very good competition to the previous models of Sonos soundbars and Bose although those brands can put out quite a bit more power. One last note, there are no fine tuning options for this soundbar outside of the auto-eq calibration. This options are very minimal for if you want to increase/decrease bass, treble, or center channel... but I honestly didn't really have a problem with that. The calibration did very well at determining the available space to work with. Technology, eh?
Notes:
I've seen other reviewers below voice complaints so I think I will address a few.
One person claimed that they had trouble with the calibration process, but that does not sound like a fault of the soundbar. That just means that person was likely running some low-budget wifi and trying to add a mostly wireless setup to it without any expertise in the wireless field. I use a mesh network and did not encounter a single hiccup with calibration.
Someone mentioned that the Dolby Atmos was lacking and then mentioned that they had vaulted ceilings. Well obviously with vaulted ceilings the upward firing speakers aren't going to hit the correct angles to give the proper experience. DOLBY ATMOS WILL NOT WORK WITH VAULTED CEILINGS. Just a heads up... :)
Lastly, you absolutely have to have proper positioning to get the most out of this soundbar/subwoofer. I would recommend to watch a few YouTube videos and determine how you want to setup in your desired room prior to buying. The subwoofer won't work as well if you have it in a corner of the room and getting cross-channel interference from the soundbar. Someone mentioned that the subwooker was lacking, but I can almost bet that they likely had it in a location that minimized its effectiveness.
All in all, thanks for reading my review! If you plan on purchasing make sure to leave a review for others! I plan on keeping the bad boy for years to come!

This surround sound system is excellent, however the bugs it has may be a dealbreaker for some. Packaging was excellent and the system was easy to set up overall. PLEASE do both phases of calibration so the system will be properly set up to your room's characteristics. I skipped calibration at first but it's a night and day difference once you complete it. I am an audiophile and this system really does sound excellent but even after calibration I feel dialogue should be a bit better as some scenes can overpower the dialogue. Now the bugs are what made me return it. The major bug was that I had the bar connected to the TV using eArc and most of the time when the TV came on the soundbar would wake but no sound would work. So you have to fully power cycle it for it to work again. Even after trying different cables it still wouldnt cooperate. However, I did find if you used the supplied cable the issue was very intermittent. I did do the software updates as well. I assume this issue is a cec issue that has yet to be addressed. Some posts on Reddit indicate users having the same issue. This issue is what made me return it. Also, sometimes the audio would become jambled if you skipped ahead in a show or movie. But a pause and play would fix that easily so no big deal. I left the wireless speakers plugged in with micro usb cables on my back wall so theyd always be charged however the left speaker refused to charge occasionally but resetting the connection of the micro usb got it to charge again. The bass was boomy and the overall experience is awesome. This system can really be the best on the market if JBL would work on correcting these issues. I do recommend this system though if you can put up with the issues I listed. Will definitely give JBL another shot if they do a refresh on this system.

I never write reviews but over the past 2 months I've had a long journey trying out different soundbar systems from BestBuy. This one was my 4th exchange at BestBuy so I figured my review could help atleast one person. I had been eyeing the JBL 9.1 since the start of my journey but didn't want to fork up the $999 price tag if there was comparable systems for less.
-My journey started with buying the $599 Polk 5.1 Magnify Max soundbar system. I loved the sound from this system. The rear speakers and subwoofer were loud and rich and I could hear people's voices in movies and video games perfectly. The system started to have issues with the subwoofer making a loud popping sound a lot and the rears randomly making a scratching sound for about 10 seconds every hour. Loved the sound but exchanged it for the $499 Samsung - 7.1-Channel Soundbar with Dolby 5.1/DTS Virtual:X.
- The $499 Samsung - 7.1-Channel Soundbar with Dolby 5.1/DTS Virtual:X sounded great through the mids, highs, and lows but the subwoofer was not hitting as hard as the Polk system I had prior. I really wanted loud bass. I then chose the following weekend to exchange this system for the $799 Samsung - Q850t 5.1.2-Channel Soundbar with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X.
- The $799 Samsung - Q850t 5.1.2-Channel Soundbar with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X had a bigger subwoofer and it had 2 Atmos speakers in the soundbar which intrigued me never having heard Atmos before. This system had more bass from the subwoofer than the previous Samsung system but not as much as the Polk. I felt like I couldn't really hear a difference with the Atmos speakers because they were in the soundbar and not in the rear speakers. When playing music, playing games, and watching movies this system sounded amazing BUT I kept comparing the subwoofer to the Polk subwoofer I had the first time and I wanted that bass. So I decided to see what else BestBuy had to offer that would really get my house rattling. I really wanted deep bass.
Chose to pack everything up A THIRD TIME and head to BestBuy to exchange yet again and make the leap for the $999 JBL 9.1
- I get the $999 JBL 9.1 system and was very excited because this one had Atmos speakers for the rears as well as inside the soundbar + a bigger subwoofer which people raved about in the reviews. Plug everything in and wow I was extremely impressed. I finally felt I had found the system which covered all the bases. Everything sounded amazing especially the rear speakers with Atmos + the subwoofer would rattle my house which is what I wanted.
***First ISSUE***
After 30 minutes of listening to it I decide to finally setup the wifi on it and calibrate the system and update the firmware. I update the firmware successfully and try to calibrate it but it fails to calibrate the first five tries. Immediately after it successfully calibrates I start to play a movie to test if it sounds different after the firmware update and calibration. The rear right speaker was only outputting about 10% volume compared to the left rear speaker - there was a red dot lit up on the speaker that wasn't working while the one working correctly had a white lit up dot.
I do some research and see people have had similar issues with the rear speakers not working properly. I was so confused because when I initially setup the system the rear speakers had sounded great. I end up factory resetting the sound system by holding down the Power button and the Input button on the soundbar and now the system is working 100% as it should after factory reset. If you want amazing sound from the rears and soundbar, deep toned bass that you can feel, and Atmos upfiring speakers that sound amazing get this system. Just make sure you don't update the firmware or calibrate it. I would have given this sound system 5 stars if I didn't have those issues. Hope this helped.

Not the best. This sound bar has had lots of little issues. The sound is great but I liked my 5.1 better. The sound becomes delayed from the picture and the only fix is to unplug the unit and restart. Dolby atmos will kick out and back in mid movie. If you’re going to have it on for a long time the satellite speakers will die and they only charge when the unit is off despite being connected to the main bar. Knowing what I know now I wish I would’ve bought something different.

Great Set Up Only Lacks More EQ Adjustment

I bought this set and considered the cheaper soundbar package for $600 but the soundbar in this package is much nicer and I really enjoy being able to detach speakers. It creates a fantastic surround sound system without being invasive or tedious to set up. Just pull them off and place them where you want. My biggest want was a heavy hitting sub and it definitely delivers. You can increase how loud the detachable speakers are with 3 different levels which is nice. The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is because the EQ settings, or lack thereof, aren't great. You can increase the sub sound/bass but there is no treble or frequency control. Messing with EQ can make a good system sound bad so that might have been the reasoning.

JBL and BB: 5 Stars!

After reading tons of reviews on soundbars with/without subwoofers, with/without satellites I took a trip to my local BB to check out what they had. Unfortunately, most of the demo soundbar setups they had in the store didn't work and because they'd been provided by the respective vendors there was nothing my salesman could do to correct that.
Of the ones that were working (small Bose; Vizio; small JBL) the JBL sounded pretty good in store. I really wanted to hear the 9.1 because for my space, the detachable satellites would provide a perfect solution to not having an aesthetically acceptable place to permanently mount rear speakers. Based on the sound of the smaller JBL I decided to try the 9.1.
BB had an open box unit (rated "excellent" meaning that cosmetically the unit was like new and ALL components, parts/pieces were included) at a good price. Ordered and it showed up 4 days early. Great.
Honestly, opening the box was harder than setting up the unit. I really liked the sound. I loved that I could detach the satellites, set them on a desk or a counter for the duration of a movie and then reattach to the main bar, out of the way.
Satisfied that this was what I wanted, I began looking through the contents of the box and discovered the mounting hardware was missing. BB readily responded to my inquiry and provided an additional discount on the unit which they credited to my account (THANK YOU!). JBL offered to ship the hardware to me NO COST (THANK YOU)!
Both get 5 stars for customer service. Easy to contact. Cooperative. Helpful!!!
SOUND: I have a very high end stereo elsewhere in my house. I know what excellent audio sounds like. It was never my intent to try to recreate that in my TV room. That said, the bass was tight and blended beautifully with the rest of the system. If you want to "break windows", set the bass to 5 and your spouse and all your critters will head for the hills.
Mids and high end were also very good. Smooth with no sibilance or harshness. For movies, dialogue was clear and properly anchored in space and the 9.1 was far more acceptable for music than I expected it would be. Is it the equivalent of my high end stereo? No way. But man, it's pretty darn good! Clean and satisfying.
Satellites and creation of 3D via Atmos is very good and my room has 10 foot ceilings. No signal drops. No hassles pairing. Same for the wireless subwoofer.
I don't miss an equalizer among the settings. The tonal balance is fine for my tastes. The remote provides enough functionality that mixing the front/rear and bass was easy and left me wanting nothing more.
I've got a 2021 LG 65 inch OLED and compatibility was hassle free.
BUILD: Solid. Attractive. No issue or concerns. No problems with battery life (movie and then the Super Bowl!). FYI - you CAN run the satellites powered with a micro USB (not provided) if you want.
SUM: Unless you're convinced that a true 5.1 system is the only configuration you can live with, and you have a room that can accommodate rear speakers and wires, I can recommend the JBL 9.1 as a no compromise alternative (unless you want to spend considerably more on a component setup).
Add that to outstanding customer service from BOTH companies and you've got a winner here.
Way to go JBL and Best Buy!
