This equipment puts out a weak bass. Was looking forward to installing this as part of my system. I listen to a lot of very heavy metal and this is disappointing.

Great sound from such a small sub

It's been a few years since I really got to enjoy the full-sounding dynamics in my car audio music. I have a 2011 Ford Edge SEL with a decent stock touch screen radio. I upgraded all four speakers in each door to Alpine 5X7" 2-way coaxial speakers. It sounded a lot clearer and had better highs from the tweeters and good mid-range, but still lacked the bass I was looking for. When I was getting the speakers installed at Best Buy, the technician recommended a small powered sub. So I looked into the JBL BassPro SL. I recently purchased it from BestBuy. At first, I wasn't sure what to think because of how small the enclosure is. I was used to having large obnoxious-sized subs which was ok when I was younger, but now I enjoy having the free room in the car. I knew the big subs produced, yet I wanted to give this option a try. After Scott, my technician, installed it, I got to hear how good it sounded. The 8" woofer also is housed in the sturdy ABS plastic enclosure and has a sturdy steel grill to protect it. Note: It's only 2-13/16" tall which is great for most installs under the seats of most cars, but for the Ford Edge, I had it installed in the back in the rear right side of the trunk, screwed to the panel adjacent to the trunk door. The back seats drop too low when you put them down, and would crush it. Also if you have power seats like I do, make sure the dimensions will work first. The second thing to mention and the reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because it doesn't come with the JBL GTO-RBC remote wire/knob which is handy to quickly increase or decrease the base. You'll have to search online for it. Overall, the frequency range (35-120 Hz) is decent if you're not looking for over-the-top bass and just want some more depth to your music.

I wanted to improve the weak bass of the factory Bose system in my Nissan 370Z, but didn't want to take up any more of the limited trunk space with a regular sub box. There are a couple of really nice custom enclosures around, including one that fits in the middle of the spare tire, in place of the original Bose sub-woofer box. But they're all upwards of $600 and that's before you buy an amplifier for them. So I discovered these compact "all in one" sub-woofer boxes and realized one of them would be just what I was looking for. It looks like the Kicker Hideaway is the most often used and reviewed on on the market, but I knew JBL was a respected name in audio, and the BassPro SL sells for $50 less than the Kicker solution. So I gave this one a try. Even paid Best Buy for a professional installation. When I got my car back after they installed it? The bass was still really weak. You could hear it was there, but it was hardly an improvement over the Bose sub-woofer. Over the next week, I tinkered with it here and there when I had free time, and realized any time I turned up either the bass level control or the "bass boost" control - the sub started making a rattling noise. Basically, there was no way to adjust it to an appropriate volume level without hearing the weird rattle with each bass hit. Earlier today, I decided maybe it was because Best Buy wired it directly in to the speaker level outputs that went to the factory sub. So I bought a line level converter and re-wired it so it would use the RCA cables off the converter. Nope -- exact same problem! I decided to do a return, or at least an exchange, but it's now been about 30 days since I purchased the JBL and without "Elite" status as a Reward Zone member, Best Buy says i only had 15 days to take this back! That really stinks, since their installer had to know something wasn't right with this sub, but installed it anyway, adjusting it to hide the flaw. I bought a Kicker Hideaway just to test it out in place of the JBL, and guess what? It sounds great! Plenty of bass and no more weird rattling.

This subwoofer is hardly qualified to be called a sub. Low frequency response is abysmal. My 6x9 door speakers have better bass response. It will bottom out at medium volumes and flat out distorts at high volume. If you listen to one song on repeat constantly. Then you might be fine. But you will find yourself adjusting the settings every time you change tracks to make it sound ok. No versatility. Not worth the money. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because it’s relativrky well constructed and fit under my seat perfectly in a 2017 Jeep Cherokee.
