I want to start out by saying that the JBL Quantum 400 headphones are by far the comfiest pair of headphones I own. I can play for hours on end with no discomfort from my ears, head, or neck. I cannot say this about any of my other pairs. That reason alone is enough for me to recommend these to others. The fact that they can be used with any device with a 3.5mm jack is a very welcome bonus. Now I can enjoy gaming on any device I choose in comfort without disturbing others. That being said, the Quantum 400s work best when attached to a PC. Connection to a computer via USB grants you access to the JBL QuantumENGINE software and powers the RGB lighting. JBL's QuantumENGINE software is what you use to customize the headphones to suit your tastes. From here you can set the equalizer to one of 7 preset modes or you can manually adjust the levels at 10 different frequencies to fine tune the sound how you like. The software also allows you to adjust the RBG lighting although there is only so much you can do with it. There are only 4 preset lighting modes, 3 different lighting effects, and a 10 second loop for you to divide up as you see fit. Though I suppose some customization is better than none at all. In terms of sound quality, I would rate these as above-average but not top-of-the-line. The default equalizer settings make things sound pretty muddled and a bit bass heavy but not in a good way. Enabling Spatial Sound and QuantumSURROUND go a long way to improve things, along with some tweaking of the equalizer. However, the bass never gets much punch to it so keep that in mind when listening to music with these. Even though the Quantum 400s do not have active noise-cancelling, they are still really good at isolating you from outside noises which surprised me. Also, QuantumSURROUND is great at helping you to become immersed in your game by accurately positioning sounds relative to your character. These headphones actually allow you to tell what direction noises are coming from so that you may react accordingly. Something important I discovered when connected via USB is that you need to make sure that "Speakers (JBL Quantum 400* Game)" is your selected playback device in Windows. Mine defaulted to "Headset Earphone (JBL Quantum 400 Chat)" during initial setup which is not what you want. Once I figured this out, my headphone experience improved dramatically. I really like the microphone on the Quantum 400s. My voice comes through clearly and it is easy to adjust the mic to a comfortable location. The Flip-Up To Mute function, as well as a dedicated Mute button, are very nice touches that I came to appreciate the more I used them. I feel that it's worth mentioning that the microphone cannot be unmuted while the microphone is lifted up. Not sure why anyone would want to in the first place but just be aware that the headphones won't allow you to anyways. Also, the included cables are braided for long-term ruggedness and durability and I appreciate that they chose to pay attention to little details like this. Seeing that these are a JBL product, I would expect them to be a bit more ready to go out of the box than they are. However, it isn't that hard to adjust them to a respectable level of sound quality. Pair that with their phenomenal comfort, excellent mic, and great sound positioning and you end up with a really good set of headphones, especially at this price point.

Thanks for your feedback. We're always looking ways to improve. To isolate the issue, you may try to connect to a different device (Console. PC or Mobile Devices). You may also try to use a different 3.5mm cable and check if the issue still persists, and try to use the Type-C to Type-A cable (Xbox™ | PlayStation™ | Nintendo Switch™ | Mobile | MAC | VR). I've always had a great luck with JBL audio products, and this gaming headset is no exception. It delivers the goods with this headset, which has a great array of features. My only drawback was a bit of an issue with the USB cable and my gaming laptop, which I was thankfully able to work around. The headset is an over the ear design. It's made of a fairly sturdy plastic, with nicely padded cups and headband. Comfort was pretty good with extended wearing. While not noise canceling, they do a good job of isolating you from exterior sound. The headphones light up with the JBL logo on each side, which is customizable in software, but only when used via USB, not with the 3.5mm sound option. The left headphone contains a mic mute button, a game/chat audio balance dial, and a volume dial. On the bottom is the USB-C connection and 3.5mm audio cable. The analog 3.5mm cable is 1.2m long and the and USB-C to USB-A cable is 3m long. The USB cable is the one issue I ran into. When I plugged it into my gaming laptop, a Dell G3 17, the lights would come on, and the startup sound would be heard. And then it would promptly shutdown and fail to be detected. My only guess is that in some way, there was a power issue with the USB ports supplying enough power. I substituted in a Type-C to Type-C cable from my phone and used the G3's Type C Thunderbolt port. That worked, and I was able to install the software. Subsequently, however, the included cable--which is a very nice braided cable--worked fine. I did not have an issue on a gaming desktop, and there was no issue with the 3.5mm audio cable. The key feature of this headset is its support for spatial audio from a stereo headset. It does this via the use of the Quantum Engine software, which is only available on PC, and when connected via USB. It supports DTS but for me the real winner was JBL's QuantumSURROUND. The QuantumSURROUND is customizable--you put in your head size and physical dimensions for it to work best with you. I was impressed with it in both FPS games and with movies. The Quantum software has a large variety of customization options, and allows you set various custom configurations. Audio quality via this method was really good, and these serve well as both gaming headphones and for media consumption. While I expected the gaming to work well, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed movies with these as well. I fired up an older game, Bioshock Infinite, to see how it might benefit from audio enhancement. The firefight at the Hall of Heroes was epic through these. Now through the 3.5mm jack, or through USB with non-Windows devices, these act as more regular stereo headphones. Using a Type C to Type C cable (not included), I was able to listen fine with both a Pixel 2 XL and a Samsung Galaxy S20+. The 3.5mm cable worked fine with Xbox One. Mic quality was good. You have the option of either muting by lifting the mic, or using the mic mute button on the left headphone. The mic is not detachable. Overall, I found this to be a really compelling headset. It's probably my favorite that I've used. It's comfortable, sounds great, and is a good way to get into a spatial audio in a reasonable package. I really liked the Quantum audio software and especially the QuantumSURROUND mode it enables. My experience was only marred slightly by the installation issues that were particular to my model of gaming laptop, but the workaround wasn't hard. These are great for the PC gamer and good for eveything else.

This headset works good on PS4, directional sound is very present for a 3.5 connection, but of course not as strong as something with surround sound. On PC the RGB is a very nice feature, and the overall sound quality is very decent on 3.5 or USB. For the price this headset provides a very good value and will get the job done. It is very comfortable and after wearing for several hours I experienced no ear fatigue or sweating at all. The flip up mute is a must have in my opinion, and the game/chat mix slider on the headset is very handy as well.

Definitely JBL quality, this gaming headset has all the basic but crucial and critical aspects needed to be a star in its class as it has been designed around gaming’s most popular platforms. To start with comfort has been a strong consideration throughout its design process and manufacturing. It is very light weight at just slightly over 9 ½ oz and weighs 9.6 oz. It has the added quality feature of memory foam ear cushions to aid during long sessions of gaming. The design and material selection for the earcups not only provides an extra padding for comfort but have also been designed to fit snug enough to stay securely in place during play. The microphone boom is equipped with a light and when lite indicates notifications. It can be raised to immediately mute any connection. The voice focus boom microphone enables clear communication because it is designed to pick up sound in a directional pattern. Additionally, the sound is aided by the foam windscreen which comes pre-installed on the microphone. It is a fairly sensitive microphone and I recorded through it to measure it clarity which is excellent. The lightweight headset has all of the controls on the left earcup that to me is very functional. There is a microphone mute button, an overall volume control dial and a balance dial designed to control audio mix for gameplay and chat. The balance dial has been specifically designed to work with DISCORD and other popular chat software like TeamSpeak. This is a wired headset that comes with two cables which are both ample in length to not interfere with the gammer’s playing interaction. We all know this is important, but I found this to be another quality feature of this headset because the designer/manufacturer found it important not to scrimp on this aspect of a quality product. The headset comes with a 48” long 3.5 mm audio cable and a 10’ long USB Type-C to Type-A 3 mm connection. Both of these are covered in a durable woven fabric, and between the two allow for connections to Desktops, Laptops, PS4 controllers and some Nintendo Switch controllers. According to manufacturing specification they should also be compatible with future Xbox series X and Playstation 5 controllers. The LED earcup logos are also designed to be equipped with RGB lighting effects and the JBL proprietary Quantum SURROUND can both be controlled and enhance by downloading the JBL Quantum ENGINE software. The SURROUND Sound offers decoding up to 7.1 channels and through the software spatial and directional awareness cues can be established based on the players individual height and facial size. This software allows the microphone to be fine-tuned and the Headphones to be DTS. It provides a selection of existing audio profiles and also allows for EQ fine tuning as well as different LED lighting patterns for the earcup logo. Other general specifications include - 1. frequency response: 20-20,000, 2. Impedance: 32 ohms, and 3. Sensitivity: 113 dB. The JBL Quantum 400 comes with a 1-year warranty. Worth mentioning is the fact that if you love all these features and desire a wireless model, look at the JBL Quantum 600. All things considered, the JBL Quantum 400 is a solid, effective, interactive headset and should be strongly considered in your purchasing decision. It offers high-quality acoustics without exception.

First off, the Pros. These headsets produce great sound. The microphone picks up clearly and delivers my voice well. I really like the auto mute when you raise the mic which was great when I used it for a quick conference call. Its fantastic to know if you’re muted or not and to change it with a quick motion instead of trying to find a button on a video conferencing program. Overall it is a good headset. It worked flawlessly on my PS4 and I really liked it for this and wanted to like it overall, but the issues started once I tried to use it with other devices. Now for the cons. First, it doesn’t work with the switch through the usb-c. The manual and info says it does but from what I can tell it doesn’t. Now when the small print says it may not work with all models it makes you think that maybe it was just my version. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on who’s view you take it from) there are a lot of Switches in my neighborhood so I was able to use mine (the newest model) a launch day original model and a lite. It doesn’t work with any of them. The audio works fine from the headphone jack, and to be honest the Switch doesn’t have the best audio output anyway so that is more than fine, I just don’t like being misled about the usb-c. Second, I’m not sure what exactly the root cause of the problem is, but the headsets are finicky and can be a royal pay in the rear to get working. I have tried this headset with 6 computers (2 laptops, 3 desktops and an all-in-one). These headsets worked on first time the way you would expect on only 2 of them. I eventually got them working with 5 of the computers but never could get it working on the last. There wasn’t even a consistent fix between the computers to identify what the cause of the issue was. But here’s a summary of the problem. These headsets allow you to better control the balance between your game and your online chatting with friends. It does this by setting up 3 different sound drivers /devices on your computer. One is the microphone, the second is the headset audio-chat and the third is the headset audio-game. What you are doing is manually setting your game to the game audio which utilizes all the fancy drivers to give you your 7.1 sound effects. Then you set your chat program to the audio-chat and now your audio all comes to your headset but through two settings. Then you have a dial that you can adjust the balance between chat and game to get the mix you want and instantly silence either one with a quick movement of your finger or thumb. From what I can tell, this feature is only active through USB so when you use the headset you’re just getting everything through the chat system and it just shuts off the system for audio-game and diverts that audio to your chat one and combines them. On all my computers that didn’t work the problem was the same, the chat and mic worked fine but the game audio just wouldn’t work. For one computer that didn’t work I had to delete the driver and reinstall and it fixed it. This computer the problem was so bad that if you tried to select the driver in your sound settings it would actually crash the computer. The second got fixed by disabling my antivirus (which I don’t want to keep that way permanently). The funny thing on this one was that if the antivirus was running and you tried to use it for audio it would cause all video files to come out funny and would actually prevent youtube from playing a video. The last one (and coincidentally the first computer i tried which motivated me to really test the headsets' compatibility) I couldn’t get to work right at all. This is probably a software/driver issue of some sort but the really need to fix this and I don't think I could recommend these until the company does fix it. If you happen to only have one computer as an option the headsets won't work for you, then you're just plain out of luck. Even if you could get it working with a few hours of troubleshooting, you’re still in for a world of frustration. When they work on a PC its awesome. But it loses stars for the hassle when it doesn’t work. You can always just use the headphone jack, but then you question why you’re paying more for features you can’t use on a headphone jack. It also loses a star for the Switch issue. They never said it would work with usb-c on my PS4 so I got what I expected, but I just don’t like it advertising a feature that doesn’t work and for getting my hopes up.

Basic Headphones with Some Advanced Features

Key Features 98dB Sensitivity Full Range Frequency Response: 20Hz – 20,000Hz JBL Quantum Engine Compatible Supports JBL Quantum Surround and DTS Headphone:X v 2.0 These headphones offer a great deal of value and features for the money. While not my favorite headphones ever, they are a good product where the pluses outweigh the minuses. CONNECTIONS The headphones ship with a generously long, 10ft USB-A to USB-C cable and a good ol’ fashioned 3.5mm headphone cable. Old school, but awesome to still see it! On the left cup is the microphone (that auto mutes when rotated in the up position) and controls for volume and chat/music mix. A nice feature that you can adjust the bias of the game and chat volumes. I would like to see the headphones ship with a USB-A to USB-C adapter. This would broaden their compatibility with devices that ship with the more universally available USB-C port. JBL QUANTUM ENGINE SOFTWARE The JBL Quantum Engine software, installed on my Windows PC, offered a lot of customization options for a product at this price point. The software allows the user to adjust the EQ curve, custom tailoring the playback to his/her liking. The JBL software also unlocks the option to use the JBL Quantum Surround Engine. This is a unique software solution to resemble 7.1 surround sound using only stereo headphones. It is customizable for a person’s height and head size. I found it a ton of fun on both FPS and racing games. The simulated surround sound made games more enjoyable and immersive. The large, bass capable drivers made on screen explosions much more entertaining. The DTS Headphone setting was well implemented and made overly compressed mp3 music much more enjoyable and satisfying. I tried the Quantum Surround option for music and video playback, but found it made the material unnatural sounding. The DTS Headphone setting was a nice option between not having any form of audio processing and too much. NEGATIVES This is a corded set of headphones and I found the cord’s placement very annoying. It constantly rubs on my shirt and for whatever reason, the cord rubbing on my shirt is transferred directly into the left ear. It’s not static or anything, just the actual rubbing sound. Very annoying. The JBL Quantum Engine is very slick and offers a lot of trick features to customize and personalize the headphones to your liking. Items like surround mode, lighting, EQ curves, etc are all customizable and easily accessed in one place. However, I found the Quantum Engine software routinely eating up 15 – 20% of my CPU resources. Granted the PC isn’t a powerhouse, but that is a considerable amount of resources. Speaking of the Quantum Engine, the only way to fully enjoy what the software and headphones have to offer is using the headphones with a PC. While JBL touts near universal support for these headphones, but what is glossed over is that all the slick features that the Quantum Engine offers isn’t available on other platforms. These headphones resort to plain stereo headphones without the USB cable, a PC, and the Quantum Engine software installed. CONCLUSIONS These are one of the few headphones in this price range that I have found to support the full range of human hearing: 20Hz – 20kHz. While smaller, cheaper headphones skimp on driver size, and in turn, low frequency response, the 50mm drivers installed in these did not disappoint. I found myself surprised numerous times when listening to bass heavy music how low they can reach. At the end of the day, would I buy them? Most likely not. I would spend some additional money and get the wireless JBL Quantum 600 headphones, if no other reason, for the convenience. However, these headphones offer lots of options and good sound quality for the money, and while they may not be my first choice in headphones after using them for a while, it still doesn’t take away from what they have to offer for the buyer.

JBL, It's About Time You Made a Gaming Headset!

I have many gaming headsets from several different manufactures, both wired and wireless so I'm feeling pretty good about reviewing this one with those experiences as a comparison. Since this product isn't wholly unique in any way and everyone knows how a headset works nowadays, I'll go ahead and leave a detailed pros and cons list below. Note that I only reviewed this on PC as some of the features, such as JBL’s QuantumSURROUND only work on PC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pros: Braided cords! This is honestly something that gets overlooked sometimes, but not here. USB and 3.5mm cord included, so no dongles that get disconnected. Comfortable headband and ear cushions, seriously these feel great even after many hours. Clear microphone, flip up to mute function (this is SUPER nice). Sound is clear and crisp, could use some more low end, but in games this isn't too much of an issue. DTS X and the QuantumSURROUND make for some seriously customizable sound. Chat balance adjustment right on the headset. It lights up! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cons: Lack of deep bass (this isn’t a huge issue in gaming, but for music listening it can be a little disappointing). QuantumSURROUND only works on PC. DTS X and QuantumSURROUND make for a very vivid experience, although it’s not always as accurate as stereo or in-game surround sound options. It lights up! So overall you’re getting a super solid gaming headset that you can use across most platforms, although with minimal features. To really get the most out of this headset you’ll want to use it on the PC so you can play with JBL’s QuantumSURROUND and connect it via USB so you can take advantage of the lighting (or not..because some of us like it dark).

When it comes to reviewing the JBL - Quantum 400 RGB Wired DTS Headphone:X v2.0 Gaming Headset, I feel it should first be noted that this headset can certainly be used for console gaming, however, given the features it comes with, it was primarily designed for use with a PC. If you are looking for a headset to use for only console gaming, you can probably find something that will work just as well as this headset but at a lower price with fewer PC-only features but you still can’t go wrong with this headset if you don’t care that much about trying to save what would likely be only a little bit of money by purchasing a more console-oriented headset. With that being said, this headset is great at doing what it was truly designed to do. Using it on PC allows you to take advantage of the JBL QuantumENGINE software suite through which you can adjust the equalizer, surround sound settings, and RGB effects for the headset. The QuantumSURROUND setting is amazing and it cannot be overstated how much of an advantage this type of spatial sound can have when playing certain types of games. The sound in general is very crisp and clear no matter what I am playing or listening to and I haven’t had any complaints regarding the quality of my voice from my teammates so the mic seems to be doing its job well as well. What makes things even better is the fact that the headset is very comfortable to wear for long periods of time and it isn’t distracting at all like some other headsets I have used due to discomfort. I did test out this headset with my Xbox One and still found it to be great quality, just not quite to the level that can be obtained via PC since the audio is limited to stereo for console gaming. As a result, you don’t quite get the same experience as you do when taking advantage of the QuantumSURROUND on PC but it is still just as good as any other experience I have had with console gaming headsets. It really just comes down to price and whether or not you can or need to find a similar headset with fewer PC features for less money. Overall, the JBL - Quantum 400 RGB Wired DTS Headphone:X v2.0 Gaming Headset is a great headset no matter what you plan on using it for and I highly recommend it!

When I received these headphones, I was excited but cautious. I am quite picky when it comes to sound reproduction and quality, however, at this price point I had certain expectations. I opened the box which was well packaged, and downloaded the configuration software as directed. I updated the firmware on the headphone, and then I was off to the races. The first day I was seriously disappointed in the quality as I heard ZERO lows or bass and for a headphone at this cost I knew I had to be doing something wrong. So I looked at my audio devices in Windows. What I found was a surprise and a gift in the same hand. There are 2 Audio output devices CHAT, and GAME. 1 Input which is the mic. I had my output for my system and games set to CHAT. I Switched it to GAME, and boy was that NIGHT vs DAY. The surrounding sound boomed into my ears with power and fidelity that I had never noticed before. There is also a mix slider on the headphone that can be set to be even distribution of CHAT vs GAME. If you move it from even distribution to just GAME output you get a slight DB boost but nothing severe, if anything it reduced the CHAT output. I have longed for a headset that I could set Discord or Teamspeak to one audio output and the main game to its own channel that I could quickly adjust while in game when my friends are being way too loud or boisterous. The USB C to USB A cable is quite long and of a very good quality. The microphone pickup sounds great for a small headphone mic as well, even when using it as a stream microphone source, my viewers say it sounded crisp, and I could not agree more. If you move the microphone into the stowed position it'll automatically mute which is handy when needed. Overall, I am not a huge fan of wired headsets as I am restricted in my movement, HOWEVER, this Quantum 400 broke my gripe with it and with the quality I am receiving using this device, it is well worth being tied down.

Opening these up, the packaging is basic but the phones are nice and snug. The JBL are mostly plastic and lightweight. The detachable cables are premium. I used these to play online with a XBOX. Initial feel took a little to get used to as they are slightly canted forward. Once I found the perfect spot, they fit well. They are comfortable, not the best I have worn as I have another set of headphones, which I prefer still. The RBG lighting and mute light only work with PC but I really liked the flip up mic mute. I had to adjust the mic monitoring down to almost the lowest setting as there is sound bleed from the headphones. This caused some echo at times. I turned on muting all other sounds, ticked the volume down a notch and it was good to go. I found them to be good sounding and not lacking for direction. Im not sure I would buy these if I was in the market for gaming headphones but, overall, I really enjoy them. For the moeny, I feel there are better options out there.

There is a lot to say about these headphones, none of which is bad. They offer good quality sound, comfortable fit, good technology, and nice style. Out of the box the headphones can be plugged in with either a headphone jack or a USB cable. If you use the headphone jack then the headphones act like normal headphones with good sound, but you don't get the bells and whistles of plugging them in with a USB cable. When plugged in with the USB cable you are prompted to download the Quantum app where you can customize the sound, microphone and color schemes on the sides of the headset. Yes, the JBL letters on the sides of the headset switch colors! You can switch from stereo to DTS or surround sound. Also, the microphone sound is then passed into the headset so that you can hear yourself talking and don't get tempted to yell while talking through the headset. The sound quality is good, the volume can get very loud, and the tight but comfortable fit keeps the sound from getting in or out of the headsets. Even after wearing the headset for over an hour there was no discomfort. Overall, these headphones are high quality and very versatile. They can also be customized with the app and controlled with buttons on the side of the headset. They have everything I was looking for.

This JBL quantom 400 is a great value for an entry level headset. The first thing you do when you open a box with a new headset is to place it on your ears and you will not be disappointed with these JBLs. The ear cushions are really nice and comfortable for a $99 headset. Second, you want to access the software to calibrate and customize the headset to your liking. You will enjoy going through the different options to get it all set up through your PC. Of course another advantage to this headset is that you can also use it on other platforms. Once you have it all set up, you are going to be blown away by the sound quality of this headset, again keeping in mind that it they only cost $99. Next, you want to gauge the mic and that won't disappoint either. My friends could hear me very clearly as we were playing. The headset has controls on the side and I love that you can mute yourself easily by flipping the mic up. I would highly recommend this headset if you are looking to buy a headset for a new gamer or if you are on a budget. The value that you get for this JBL headset is amazing!
