Stand Out in the Virtual Crowd

The JLab Epic USB Webcam’s 2K resolution and 30 fps frame rate stands out among the virtual crowd. I was able to use the Epic webcam right out of the box as it arrived just in time for a video meeting. This webcam immediately elevated my video calls by providing high definition video resolution. It was pretty easy to use on apps like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet and more. I was impressed when I instantly noticed the increase in camera quality.
Connectivity
I tested this USB webcam on both PC and Mac with no connectivity issues. I noticed that Microsoft Teams on my PC laptop defaulted to the Epic immediately. Most other times on PC & Mac, any app I used required me to change the camera input manually in just a few clicks, but I still found it easy to plug & play. My PCs have USB ports for a direct plug-in. My Macbook Pro only has USB-C ports so I used a multi-port hub and was able to connect successfully.
Mounting & Accessories
My work-from-home office environment has a multi-monitor setup, so it’s very convenient to be able to hook up the Epic webcam to my laptop and place the camera anywhere I need. This camera mounts neatly on top of a monitor or laptop by extending the kickstand. I appreciate that it also has a threaded mounting option to use with a tripod or any ¼”-20 threaded mount. If I want to make the camera physically match the ambiance, there are two woven face plates, white and dark gray to choose from which can be changed in a snap.
Zoom & Exposure Buttons
There are two touch-activated buttons on this webcam. The zoom button rotates through 4 digital zooms gradually getting closer to the center of the view. I prefer to stay in the first two zoom levels since I usually set it up on a monitor right in front of me. The exposure button also has 4 settings gradually getting brighter and more precise exposure control with a long-press of the button. I was initially having some trouble with the exposure, but JLab provided helpful troubleshooting tips and I was able to fix my issue in no time.
Natural or LED Lighting
Lighting is essential to get the best out of this camera or really any camera, but WFH environments aren’t always equipped with production lighting. Being backlit or being in a low light environment will lower the quality of any camera, the Epic being no exception. My experience was that in very low light scenarios, the exposure button levels were difficult to notice. Some kind of lighting is needed to achieve the highest quality, whether it’s natural light from a window or an LED panel.
Final Thoughts
I am really enjoying the JLab Epic HD Webcam because it’s easy to use, lightweight, and compact. Simply put, it has better quality than any of my built-in laptop cameras across multiple platforms so it’s an easy upgrade if you’re in the market for a webcam with these specs.

'Epic' Video Quality

The Jlab Epic Cam HD is a great choice for video chatting or presentations, and pretty much a bargain to boot. Native resolution is 2160/30fps or 1080/60fps with four levels of brightness control and four zoom presets. The mount can be used on a monitor or laptop edge with minimal intrusion, or can be folded for use on a desk or other flat surface. It also has a tripod screw mount. One nice touch, the camera is on a ball swivel so the can be panned or tilted. The camera is a low, wide design, about one and a half inches tall including the mount and three inches wide. The two microphones are on either end of the camera, making for acceptable separation. There is an activity light which indicates the camera is active, but there is no privacy shield.
Video quality is excellent and adapts to different lighting levels very well. The autofocus was very fast and didn't seem to hunt like some webcams seem to do. I used the Epic Cam for both video conferencing and an imprompto live presentation where I was moving around quite a bit. Looking at the recording afterwards, I was surprised by how well the autofocus tracked me.
The image frame is quite wide angle, spec'ed at 90 degrees, but can be zoomed in, I would guess between 1.5x and 2x. The image is sharp all the way to the edges with no apparent curvature, the color is nicely saturated, and the color balancing is excellent. I switched to 1080p/60fps during an impromptu presentation and I was bouncing around the frame a bit. The higher frame rate helped out with minimal falloff in video quality.
Installation was simple(Windows). Position the camera, plug it into a USB port, it auto-installs. There is no proprietary control app or software, the brightness and zoom controls are buttons on the top of the camera. Any other controls (white balance, resolution, etc.) are handled by whatever video app you're using or the native Windows controls.
Overall, a very nice webcam for chatting, conferencing, and presentations. Might even be good for vlogging and livestreaming, but I'm not quite there yet. At the price point, it's a bargain and definitely worth your consideration.

Almost Perfect, No Privacy Shutter

JLab almost had the perfect webcam here, the simple setup and on-camera controls are ingenious! The microphones work excellently, and the camera quality is sharp and clear. Low light performance is great, and the inclusion of a second magnetic fabric microphone cover is great for an extra bit of personalization on a truly "work-focused" webcam. It also features a fully articulating ball head, monitor edge mount, 1/4-inch tripod mount, and a very nice, braided USB cable! It's 2K (1440P) resolution gives the Epic Cam an "epic" leg up on most of the other offerings in the ~$100 price point!
The only real negatives are the lack of software or software adjustments available with the camera (something akin to "Logi Tune") and the lack of privacy shutter in any capacity, software or hardware! This seems like a glaring design oversight on an otherwise excellent webcam, I have taken to just turning the camera around when not using it but would love to just slide or flip a privacy shutter over the lens.
Overall, this is still an excellent webcam that is easy to use and setup. Software and privacy shutter aside, the 2k resolution is incredible to use for Teams calls or streaming after work, while also allowing a laser sharp image when using the physical zoom control! This camera looks equally at home in your office or a gamer streaming setup, while also providing clear images, physical aperture and zoom control, multiple mounting options, and a lot of physical adjustments to get the perfect looks. The lack of software controls can easily be updated later by releasing software and the privacy shutter just leads to creative ways of giving yourself privacy, like turning the camera around or placing a sticky note over it (trusty old sticky note!). For $100, JLab's Epic Cam stands up well against the competition and offers better image resolution versus most others, 2K vs 1080P!

An EPIC upgrade to my image and meeting staging.

EPIC USB WEBCAM from JLAB
I’ve created a comfortable work station centered on a nice, really big monitor, with a separate keyboard/mouse all connected to my laptop, Before I attached this EPIC Webcam to my very large LG monitor, my current video camera was pushed off to one side because it’s embedded in my laptop. And this EPIC camera is much better in every viewing measurement. It’s sharper, far less grain, and crisp images. This is an improvement I'm very pleased with.
SPECS: JLAB’s EPIC Webcam does a good job upgrading my image while simplifying my home/ office meeting staging. The EPIC USB camera has been a great addition to my work station. It offers full 2k resolution, a 5 Megapixel sensor, operates at 30fps, has a 90 degree field of view, allows adjustable exposure and zoom.
SETUP: Plug it into a USB port, which on my MacBoo Pro 14” (2021) means I’ll use a connected hub or a dock. Unfold the not-really-a-clamp base so it straddles the top of your monitor or use the provided tripod screw location if you have a stand. In FaceTime or several other Meeting Apps I tested you will need to select the EPIC Webcam instead of the built-in FaceTime Cam. Using the appropriate meeting controls you should be able to view your image. Almost. I had an issue which seems unique to my MacBook Pro (2021) 14”.
I needed another step. First, keep I’m mind that the MacBook Pro (and many other computers) offer no way to modify or manipulate video parameters (such as brightness, contract, color, etc). Plug in a video camera and it should automatically replace, with adequate video parameter settings, the internal camera.
(As verified by JLAB …) the Epic add-on camera may need to be unplugged and reconnected. Or, as I discovered, I needed an add-on webcam software, seemingly to increase the camera’s image from its very dark picture to a more usable and brighter image. I looked for the least expensive App in the App store (Free!) and discovered that Spedal Webcam Software worked perfectly with the meeting software I tested, including FaceTime, Microsoft Teams and Zoom. I expect any other webcam software will do the same.
PERFORMANCE and SUMMARY: Once I sorted out the excessively dark image issue by using a Web Cam App (SPEDAL), the JLAB EPIC CAM performed wonderfully. JLab’s confirmation of my issue suggested this was unique and related to some Macs. I have no reason to complain in any event, as the necessary (for me) App was free and required little more than opening the extra App and moving the sliders to increase video gain. in fact, I’m glad I was forced to look for an App with features that allow further adjustments of the camera, because now I can do some color correction, modify brightness, contrast, sharpness and color balance.
The JLAB EPIC CAM’s own top control button for brightness worked as described, but it’s rather awkward and crude to use. Use an App. The Zoom was more limited but also more obvious in its variations. I suppose it is nice to have, but I’ll use a zoom in the meeting App if available. The picture from the EPIC was FAR superior to the image provided by my FaceTime camera. It was more natural and had better detail and color. Considering everything, the slight quirks and final outcome, this is a camera I can recommend and it will get significant use from me. For some folks, the few obstacles may be too frustrating, although it remains to be seen if this quirk is inherent to some equipment setups.

JLab’s products have been hit or miss for me over the years. A few of their BT earbuds and headsets, and especially one of their top-of-line microphones, really wowed me with their performance and features that helped make them a TREMENDOUS value for the dollar. But other JLab earbud and headphone offerings that I’ve tried have fallen short, leaving me with that “well, I guess what you pay for” feeling as perhaps I was expecting too much from some of their budget-minded products. This is my first JLab webcam and I was really excited to use it thanks to some impressive-sounding specs and a few nifty features on board; but sadly, the Epic Cam turned in pretty middling image quality that might only be forgivable at a much lower price point.
Design-wise, the Epic Cam is a handsome bit of kit; the two swappable alt-colored fabric faceplates are a nice touch that help make the webcam look and feel professional in a variety of settings. The shell construction feels solid, and the universal attachment clip has some decent heft to it that makes the entire assembly feel reassuringly solid when mounted on a slender laptop display or monitor. The clip also has a handy threaded tripod mount on the bottom while the camera itself can rotate a full 360 degrees. I was also very pleased to discover that the webcam has some adjustment for side-to-side pivot and forward-to-back tilt to accommodate odd mounting or seating positions—NICE!
The braided USB-cable comes with a hook-and-loop tie-strap to help with cable management--but it’s only 3 feet long. This is undoubtedly fine for a laptop or if your computer sits really close to your monitor, but it could be a problem if you have your computer hidden away behind or underneath a desk or cabinet. The top of the camera offers two touch controls—one for adjusting exposure level, and one for zoom level with 4 quick-stop zoom settings; you can also hold down the button for more gradual and granular control over the zoom level.
On my Win11 Pro PC, the exposure button worked in all applications I tested, but the zoom control only worked within a video conferencing app--Windows’ own Camera app would not recognize zoom-button inputs for either photo or video capture (likely a Windows rather than JLab issue). A single easy-to-see but thankfully not blindingly bright blue LED illuminates to the left of the lens when the camera is active. Behind the fabric faceplate are also two omnidirectional mics rather than one. In practice, sound quality seemed excellent, at least during a controlled video-conferencing call; I’m just not sure how the stereo mics would perform in a really noisy environment.
Camera specs fly impressively beyond HD, offering up to 2560x1440 photo resolution or 1440p/30fps video. In practice, however, the image quality leaves a lot to be desired, especially when viewed fullscreen. In a smaller window, the image looks really clear with lots of perceived detail; but when you blow that 1440p image up on a big 1440p or better monitor (or something that goes REALLY fullscreen like a Surface Hub), all that detail tends to get obscured by excessive grain and visible noise. Skintones tended to look a bit exaggerated with a distinct lean towards pinkish-to-red, even under bright daylight-white bulbs.
The image quality certainly isn’t worse than other HD or lower-resolution webcams I’ve used in the past, and it does improve on some laptop’s built-in 720p pinhole cameras; but for something sporting up to 2K resolution with “Epic” in the name, I guess I was expecting to be wowed. Sure, it’s fine for Zoom or Teams, but I really hoped to squeeze more than “just fine” out of the Epic Cam.
Given my disappointment with the image quality, a few other (admittedly minor) issues were a bit irksome, especially for a webcam not necessarily priced in a “budget-friendly” tier. For example, there is no privacy shutter for the lens. Yes, there is an activity LED, but in today’s increasingly and ever-connected tech environment, a little manual guarantee of privacy behind the keyboard would have been appreciated.
The zoom and exposure controls are also appreciated, but they’re not necessarily the easiest to use in real-time. You must reach up across the camera’s field of view to activate the controls—you can easily jostle the camera while fiddling with the buttons, and the results of your adjustments only progress in one direction (so if you blow out exposure or zoom in too far, you have to keep adjusting those settings until the desired level comes around again). Personally, I would have preferred the effort have been spent on a much better image sensor and just let the user fiddle with in-app controls for exposure or zoom.
Finally, the front of the monitor clip is actually pretty long. I applaud JLab for making it such that the webcam gives you more “bite” onto the monitor frame for greater security and stability, but if you have a frameless monitor or one with tiny to no bezels at all, the clip falls deep enough into the screen that it might obscure just a little of your work area.
I wish I could be more complimentary about the JLab Epic Cam because I was really excited to use it based on the specifications alone, but there are plenty of other options out there that arguably produce better-quality images at lower price points, even options that don’t sport the higher-end pixel count this webcam features. At a steep discount, I might be inclined to recommend the it, but at least based on my experiences, I don’t think the Epic Cam is a good value at this time for what you get.

I own many cameras for my house hold and for my work.
From COVID lock down to hybrid office setup to travelling for work I have done it all..
These days with team collaboration the need to connect and substitute in person meetings, having a nice camera is a need.
Jlab has many products that I have tested and have been impressed with in the past.
This camera is no different. The build is nice and solid. The appearance is nice and sleek.
Setup was a snap. Plug and play. No need to download any software. It worked automatically with Zoom, Teams, WebEx, Google meet without any issues. Gaming and other streaming was fine as well.
Mic was nice. Others heard me crystal clear.
The best part was the camera. I have had other makes where the camera just did not cut it with the angle of aperture. This was waa spot on. It was just right with distance and light adjustment was perfect.
Nice job Jlab. Another good product for your inventory.
I would recommend this product based on my use.

Starting off with the JLab Epic USB Webcam, my initial impressions were a mixed bag. The 1080p video resolution felt a bit misleading at first, especially when attempting to zoom in, as video noise became all too apparent. It's worth noting: while the camera isn't quite up to 2K standards, it does deliver on its 1080p promise.
With a bit more time and experimentation, things began to shift. Proper lighting is crucial. I found that warmer lighting gave the camera a noticeable boost, making the image quality more appealing. Another game-changer was discovering the light exposure adjustment button. By tweaking the exposure on the lens, the image quality underwent a transformation, bringing out a much clearer and detailed video.
Speaking on a personal note, I noticed the video quality is somewhat forgiving, especially for someone like me who doesn't have flawless skin. It seems to be more favorable for men on video conference calls, as opposed to women who might wear makeup and want every detail to pop.
Turning to audio, the microphone is decent. On a scale where 10 is studio-quality and 1 resembles a tin can, I'd rate it a solid 6. It's passable for most video conference calls, but don't expect studio-grade clarity.
Overall, the JLab Epic Webcam took some getting used to. While it didn’t wow me right out of the gate, with a bit of tinkering, it turned out to be a decent pick. If you're open to a bit of a learning curve and making some adjustments, it can be a solid choice for your video conference needs.

It was really easy to set up the camera; however, I have noticed the colors on it are a bit off. I don't know proper terminology but it seems the red/blue balancing is off. Basically under normal lighting the image it captures has a bit of a blue tint to it, but by using reddish/yellow lighting towards my face it makes the image show up normal

JLAB EpicCam tests my memory

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Upon connecting the new camera, I was disappointed. The image was grainy and my skin tone was too pink/red to be lifelike. As I examined the picture of myself, I kept referring back to my old webcam, a Logitech Pro 9000 which I remembered as having a fairly sharp image and normal skin tone right out of the box. Ahh, the tricks of memory…
The JLab EpicCam was easy to connect and setup on my computer, as it is plug and play. I attached the webcam to my monitor, but then decided to place it on the shelf above the monitor, and both locations were stable. There isn’t an install disc and that’s a blessing and a curse; not having to deal with bloatware, but losing flexibility in altering the settings of the image. My computer is in a bedroom/office that is low light and that introduced problems right away. The image was giving skin tones a reddish/pinkish cast and the picture was grainy. Other objects in frame were dark with little contrast but seemed to have the proper hue and saturation. I used the button on top to increase the exposure and that decreased the pink cast, but anything beyond the first level increase in exposure was too much and the view became washed out. Raising the exposure one level did bring out the indistinct objects in the background so that they weren’t lost in darkness.
I was used to my Pro 9000, so I knew I could adjust the settings for that webcam in the software they provided. And I assumed that their Right Light 2 software that came with the Logitech webcam was helping to automatically improve the brightness of the shot.
I then used the Windows Camera App Brightness setting (about the only setting you get. No white balance, contrast, gain, and color intensity) on the EpicCam, and by setting the brightness at 124 and the exposure at +1, I got a reasonable picture. It still seemed a little grainy and my face still seemed a tad too pink, but my arms were normal color.
I Skyped my son and we shared screens so I could see what he could see, and the Skype video quality of my image was better than I was seeing from my camera image in the Windows camera app, so I was a bit confused. Skype gives you the ability to adjust the settings I mentioned above as well as the brightness and exposure. Some of these settings I had adjusted in the past. Adjusting these settings for this webcam through the Skype app fixed all the picture quality issues I was experiencing. I did not test either Zoom or Teams picture settings to see if other platforms allowed these improvements. As far as the audio quality, my son stated that it was crystal clear on his end, though we didn’t test the stereo image.
I decided to take some video of myself in my office and compared it to a video I had made months earlier in the same room with the Pro 9000. The results showed that my memory was way off. The sharpness and detail were so much better with the JLab EpicCam. The graininess I was seeing was also in the Pro 9000’s picture, as well as video noise and jaggies around objects that were absent in the video from the EpicCam. And the pink cast to my face was on the Pro 9000’s video as well. When you turn on the Pro 9000, you get to test it on an image that is only 4 ½” X 3 ½”, so it hard to see the detail. But when I compared both videos as they filled my 2k monitor’s 27-inch screen, it was no contest. Now it was easy to see the 720p of the Pro 9000 was way more degraded than the 1080p or 2k image of the EpicCam. My Pro 9000 is over a decade old and when using direct comparisons, it was easy to detect the advantages of this new camera vs. the older technology. My son had made the same positive comments about the image quality on our video call, but at the time I was still unsure of his assessment. It turns out he was right. This is a great camera.
Finally, I added a couple of lamps with daylight temperature bulbs to my office and the graininess all but disappeared. And my pink face became normal hue once again. Now I know that altering my room’s lighting is an additional step in order to get a properly exposed image, so that is why I decided to take away one star. I was hoping it would have better low light performance. By doing side-by-side comparisons I now know that the JLab EpicCam is a vast improvement over my Logitech Pro 9000’s image quality, and it is a welcome addition to my office set-up.
Pros:
1) Easy initial setup-plug and play.
2) Mounts easily including a heavy/substantial threaded tripod mount.
3) Looks very nice and allows the choice of two faceplates (white or charcoal gray) attached magnetically. And a braided cable.
4) The camera can rotate on its stand at least 180 degrees, though the downward tilt is limited.
5) Impressive specs. 5MP camera, 2k video, and up to 60fps
6) picture settings are available in Skype, if that is what you use.
7) Four-step Exposure and Zoom available on touch buttons on top of webcam.
9) Two omnidirectional microphones.
Cons:
1) Have to use Windows camera app settings and Windows has no versatility with this webcam in settings. No white level/saturation or other settings in windows default camera settings.
2) Low Light and/or Warm White lamps lend a pinkish skin tone to the image produced.
3) Low light environment also caused graininess in the image.
4) No built-in privacy shutter.
5) A bit pricey.
I think this is a quite good webcam and I would recommend this purchase. It shows that you can fool yourself when comparing your new experience to the memory of a prior experience. You have to do the right comparisons, and when you do, you come to the right conclusions. The JLab EpicCam gives a detailed and precise image, and the video is smooth and clear. I do wish it could handle low light situations better, but it still performs very well in most situations. I know I will be using it for many years to come.
