Just received my JOBY Compact Advanced Smart Kit a few days ago and have been putting it through its paces. First impressions - this thing is amazing. Very compact and sturdy. JOBY has been developing quality products for years and this compact advanced smart kit is another winner. Unboxing the compact smart kit, you're immediately greeted with a nice soft quality carrying pouch, in which the JOBY Compact Advanced Smart Kit aka tripod is inside. Another tilt/pan handle and a double cold shoe phone clamp are also in the carrying pouch along with user documentation. Pure amazement came when I unlatched the hooks at the bottom of the legs and saw how long (or how tall) the tripod actually was. This thing is awesome. Great for beginners in photography as well as vlogging (or TikTok videos, lol). I'm a photography enthusiast but far from an professional photographer. I don't have a fancy high-end priced camera (or equipment for that matter), but I have an amazing camera on my iPhone which I love taking plenty of pictures, especially while on vacation. This JOBY Compact Advanced Smart Kit tripod will definitely be on our next road trip this summer. Over the last few days, I've mainly used it on my desk both at home and work for those FaceTime or Zoom calls on my phone. It's great and to make sure you have the perfect shot, you can use the handles to pan and tilt from side to side or rotate it around. There's also a level on it to help with leveling the camera perfectly and to ensure shake-free pictures and/or videos. The possibilities are endless with this tripod because of how it can be used at different heights and angles. Very nice tripod system. The only issue I had initially was that the phone clamp kept spinning, until I noticed that I had to slide the plate out to screw the clamp on and tighten it with a coin/flathead screwdriver. Totally not a dealbreaker for me. I love this tripod and recommend it to anyone looking to get into photography or anyone looking for an amazing tripod system that doesn't feel cheap or like its about to fall apart.

This tripod is aimed at content creators. It is very compact and lightweight when collapsed. The telescoping 5 section legs collapse short enough for tabletop use and expand for up to eyelevel use. The tripod comes with a nice padded carrying case that has a shoulder string allowing you to easily carry it around. There is a spring-loaded smartphone holder that has 2 cold shoes allowing you to attach lighting, microphones and the like. The triangular quick release plate is shared with another Joby tripod allowing you to easily switch from the Gorillapod to this tripod. The quick release plate also has a spirit level that helps you level the camera. The advanced three-way head works a little differently than other tripods I have used. One nice feature of the head is that the handle that controls the side-to-side tilt motion folds away for storage unlike any others I have seen. I have used this tripod with my compact digital camera, an action cam and my smartphone. The tripod is perfect for these cameras either as a tabletop or fully extended. When I mounted a medium format camera on the tripod I had an issue locking the side to side movement. The medium format camera I used weighs 3.8 Lbs., well under the 6.6 lb. stated capacity. It took so much force to stop the head from allowing the camera to creep side to side that I was afraid that I might damage the head. Much of the photography I do involves heavy cameras, slow lenses and long exposures. I would not recommend this tripod for use with medium format cameras and wouldn't dream of attaching it to one of my 4x5s. This tripod is perfect for lighter weight cameras in the field or a home or office studio. The only reason I deduct a rating star is because I had a weight related issue with the head when using a medium format camera that was less than 2/3 of the stated capacity. This is a great compact tripod for most uses.

Great compact tripod for phones or small cameras

One of the best tools any photographer or videographer can have, is a tripod. Although they are not always needed it is nice to have one when necessary. One of the biggest downsides to most tripods is that they are big and bulky and not easy to travel or take with you places. I have used some of the Joby Gorillapods and I have always been a fan. Joby makes high quality and useful products. This tripod is made from light weight metal and when folded up it is very compact. The head on this is very nice and allows for both tilt and pan movements. If you own the Gorillapod with the quick release head, you will be happy to know that this uses the same quick release system. My only complaint with the quick release system is that it requires a coin or something to turn and screw it into your camera. When on the go this can be frustrating trying to connect it to your camera. The handles are very high quality and allow or precise movements. I love that they have included a phone mount which is made extremely well. I believe this will help mobile creators when trying to take video or pictures using a phone. This can be especially helpful when trying to record yourself without a second person to operate the camera. Also, on the phone mount there is a cold shoe which I was able to add a microphone or an LED light. Overall, I think this is a great tripod for mobile creators or someone who just needs a compact tripod for on the go. If you are someone with a larger camera or someone who needs an extremely steady tripod than unfortunately this is probably not for you. If you put a large camera it becomes to top heavy and can easily fall over. For small cameras or phones it is plenty stable though.

    Sturdy tripod

I am an amateur photographer, I had a tripod that was compact but very thin and cheap and it was hard to get the camera straight without it tilting and hard to get the legs even without them collapsing. This tripod is extremely sturdy and the clips lock it into place so there’s no collapsing whatsoever . I like that there’s a level on the stand so you can make sure that your shots are straight. Using the handle for panoramic and vertical tilt adjustments locks into place nicely and so does the handle for leveling. Attaching the camera to the head took a little bit of getting used to for me because you have to release the plate to attach the camera to the head and then use a coin to tighten it onto the plate and then slide it back on, it pops on and off easily but I was having a hard time getting the camera to point in the right direction without it being too loose, like I said, I am an amateur so with practice I’m sure I will get this right. I used this for my point-and-shoot digital camera and also my small DSLR digital camera. The pictures came out without any blur. I really wanted to use this at night because I like to take pictures of the stars and the moon but we have had too much rain and I haven’t had a chance to use it yet. I am not a vlogger or blogger but I did put my cell phone in the included attachment , which expands , so it fits all sizes of cell phones, I have an iPhone 13 mini. I recorded a small video of myself and it came out great. This comes with a nice heavy duty drawstring bag, I am a small person & just found it to be a little larger and heavier than expected but I’d recommend it because it’s a really nice, quality, sturdy tripod.

This JOBY tripopd is extremely versatile and lightweight, perfect for a travel tripod or to bring on backpacking and bike rides! It is very sturdy, even when fully extended, and the upper extension can be switched from top mounted to bottom mounted for close in, macro shots. I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking for a do-it-all compact tripod!

I am super impressed with this tripod. It's very solid and stable for how small it's able to collapse and store. The adjustable legs are easy to use and get positioned how I want them. I like that there is no center support, so I can move one leg in slightly if needed, or I can extend 1 leg to the floor, and have 2 up on the table. The center support can be flipped over so I can mount my camera under the tripod and set it up to take Macro shots etc. The head is easily adjusted, and doesn't have any wiggle or shake which is great for video. Completely extended it's 65" tall, and collapsed it's 17.5" and stores away inside the included padded storage bag. The quick release plate works great, and is also compatible with other Joby products as well. Included with the tripod is one of the nicer phone mounts I have seen. I really like this Tripod and easily recommend it to anyone looking for a compact travel tripod that's easy to set up and use.

Everything you're expecting in a basic tripod. It's sturdy, stable, and secure. Easily adjustable to any angle or height. And it folds up into a very compact package with its own carrying sack. The camera mount clips in and out of the stand, so it's easy to snap your camera on and off of the tripod. The phone mount goes exactly where the camera mounts, so you need to pick one or the other. There's a handy level built into the camera mount so you can tell if your camera is exactly level. The only minor problem I found is that the phone mount grips my iPhone exactly where the side buttons initiate an emergency call if you hold them down. However, you can just slide the phone up a little higher in the mount, and it's still stable, just not butting directly up against the bottom of the mount.

    A Perfect All-Around Tripod!

I am reviewing the JOBY Compact Advanced Smart Kit Tripod, Model JBO1764. The first thing I noticed as I took it out of the box was its overall weight. It truly "feels" like a quality item. So many tripods feel cheap, poorly put together, and frail. But not the JOBY. It feels like it is a product that will last a long time, even under rough conditions. The metal parts are substantial and thick. The plastic is also thick, heavy-duty. The handles, knobs and buttons are also indicative of its overall quality. In short, there is absolutely nothing cheap or inferior about the quality of this product's construction. It is meant to last. As I began to explore the ins and outs of the JOBY tripod, I was blown away by its design. Things I thought were shortcomings at first turned out to actually be quite ingenious. For example, after I mounted my camera, I wanted to mess around with the pan and tilt functions. For the life of me I could not understand why JOBY would design the handles to be an "over/under" design. But after several hours of using it, I discovered the the pan handle is designed to store above the tilt handle during storage. By loosening the pan handle (by turning it counter clockwise) I discovered you can actually move it to where it occupies a position 90 degrees to the right of the tilt handle. Yes, I felt a little silly having not discovered this before, but better late than never. Since I am on the subject of the control handles, I want to mention that they are easy to use, and the movement is quite fluid. There isn't the jerky movement like you get with the cheap tripods. Of course, the handles are just the method of movement, and not the heads themselves, but you know what I mean. Fully extended, the tripod measures well over 6' in height. Fully compacted, it measures only 17". In both cases, this far outperforms any of my other tripods. I like the fact that the legs utilize a 5-segment design as opposed to just a 4-segment design. This really adds a lot of stability to the tripod. The anchor screw is the industry standard 1/4". I love the way JOBY designed this. As you know, when attaching a piece of equipment, they don't all settle in at the same depth. This means that there are times when the camera is actually facing to the side, or even the back. Under the quick mount, there is an additional adjusting screw that allows the position of the camera to be adjusted and fine-tuned to face dead front. Thank you JOBY for that! The head allows for an almost 180 degree tilt. JOBY also includes a phone mount that allows you to use your cell phone exactly like a camera. It's a rather simple, yet again, ingenious design. Over the years I have purchased numerous tripods. The one lesson I have learned that is bargain priced tripods are bargain priced for a reason. It is true that the JOBY Compact Advanced tripod is a bit expensive to most, but in this case you not only get what you pay for, you get much more. And that encapsulates the entire experience...with the JOBY tripod, you don't have to deal with disappointing features, or lack of features. It delivers it all, and does it well. I enthusiastically recommend this JOBY tripod to anyone who needs a high-quality, professional tripod.

Good Kit for JOBY QR Users

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The JOBY Compact Advanced Tripod kit could be a great addition to a vlogger’s bag. Like any tripod, there are trade-offs between height vs compactness and weight vs cost. If you’re planning to use this only for shooting with a phone, it may not be as compact and light as you want or need. This tripod also uses the same QR plate as in the JOBY GorillaPod 3K kit. If you’re already bought into that mount, this is welcome. If you use (or plan to use) the more common Arca-Swiss plates, you’ll have to switch plates every time you put your camera on a different piece of equipment. PROs • Full height reaches around 55” without extending the center post (recommended for better stability), and 65” with the center post extended (less stable). 55” is a great height for ease of setup, and hunching. • The phone mount has an easy to use spring action and holds any phone up to 3.4 inches securely. It also rotates quickly from landscape to portrait position, with several stops in between. The phone mount also has slots on both ends to snap in light cubes, microphones or other accessories. • Quick locks on the tripod legs make it a breeze to lock/unlock the legs. • 6.61 lbs holding capacity is enough for small DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. • The included carrying bag is much thicker than what I’ve gotten with other tripods. It feels almost luxurious. • There are two handles on the ballhead for adjusting your camera angles. One handle rotates both the horizontal plane and vertical plane. The other handle rotates between landscape and portrait orientation (which is unneeded if shooting with the phone mount). Both handles fit snugly away when the tripod is closed. CONs • The single handle that rotates the camera on the horizontal and vertical planes requires a little finesse for horizontal panning shots. You have to practice loosening the handle just right so that you can smoothly pan horizontally without accidentally rotating vertically as well. • The camera mount is not centered over the center column. This means the point over which horizontal panning occurs is slightly in front of the focal plane of your camera. It’s not a big deal if you’re stitching a pano together, as software accounts for this. But it does reduce slightly the usable image for pano software. • 3.26 lbs makes it a little heavier than you’d think it would be. Of course, using carbon fiber instead of aluminum would have made the price much higher. • Similarly, 17.32 inches folded length means it’s more likely to go outside your backpack than inside it. This kit makes sense if 1) you’re OK using the JOBY QR plate instead of an Arca-Swiss which has more compatibility with other tripods, and 2) if you plan to shoot with a small camera and not just a phone.

The Joby Compact Advanced tripod is a nice mid-tier prosumer tripod that is lightweight and portable for those on the go. It comes with a travel bag, flippable phone holder w/ 1/4"-20 mount and 2-cold shoes, tripod, and 3D head pre-mounted. It can support cameras, and lighting up to 6.6lbs. The phone holder handles phones up to 3.5" and the tripod height spans a range of 17.5"-65". The build quality is typical for the beginner market being mostly of plastic except for the aluminum on the legs and screws plus the water in the bubble level. The 3-way advanced head is something to get used to but very cool if you happen to go between landscape and portrait for different types of content. Photographers, videographers, and vloggers alike will rejoice with the versatility offered here. Let's talk the head and baseplate. I am not a fan of the execution of the quick release plate. My first gripe is the base plate is wobbly and overall the head feels very cheap. The head splits and allows for you to go from landscape to portrait without disconnecting the baseplate. Good for most but if you do the majority of your shooting in landscape, you will find this head annoying as you cannot keep it level with the split swivel type head it rests on. Be sure to move the handles into the correct position because no matter you tightly you screw the handle, it still wobbles and tips left and right. You cannot shortcut that, so get used to locking the handle in the horizontal position for steady performance. The button and locking mechanism are made of cheap plastic so I can only imagine how long before the plastic becomes brittle and something breaks. The tripod itself is VERY solid and everything is tight when latched. The aluminum tripod legs are adjusted by latches on the legs which are made of plastic. Hopefully, we won't see those get brittle and break over time. There is no hook to weight down the center should you be out in the wind, so be prepared for a possible tip. Overall, this is a nice system for beginners and those who are into the vlogging and content creation. Those who travel will enjoy carrying something versatile like this. There is excellent height range offered here and flexibility in camera position is nice. Aside from the cheap plastic tripod head/quick release plate, there is really a lot to like here and an excellent start for anyone getting started.

I have always been an expensive tripod skeptic. While I own a good DSLR (Nikon D5600) I only occasional use a tripod so it has been hard to justify the investment. The Joby tripod has opened my eyes to the benefits of having a quality tripod system. Everything about the Joby Smart Kit tripod screams quality. It has a padded carry, with a draw string long enough to work as a shoulder strap - but the stuff you really want to know about is the tripod. The legs are solid, with 5 sections and easy flick to release clasps (no screws!) plus a center telescoping beam to give you even extra height. The total height is about 5'5" and I think with your camera, it would put your lens just shy of 6'. My D5600 was held rock solid and was easy to mount to the quick release plate but you need a coin to tighten. The quick release plate is easy to remove with using a button you press with your thumb but locks firmly when in use. The pan and tilt is smooth and with the handles, it is is easy to adjust. The small issues though, which stop this getting a perfect 5/5 is that even cheap tripods have a flip up tightening bar for the quick release plate (who carries coins anymore?). The other (small) thing is it wasn't clear from the user guide that the tilt control bar can be shifted horizontally, I only worked this out when looking at the image on the box (I thought the user guide was trying to show me the direction of movement, not the way the handle can be shifted independent of the head unit). The first time I used this, I had both handles side by side and was like... what a weird design choice, until I looked all over the box one last time. FYI, also included with the tripod is a phone mount. It holds your phone vertically or horizontally and expands to about 3.5" so should first most phones. If you're in to taking night shots with your phone, the phone holder is an added bonus.

The title of this review is quality because as soon as you handle the JOBY you will notice and feel the quality. The unit is heavy, and every part feels well thought out and equally well manufactured. My wife does novice photography work for business and pleasure. She was quick to comment about the weight and how heavy the tripod is at just over six and a half pounds. I was thinking that she was disappointed and started talking about other features that she might find interesting. She suddenly stopped me and went ahead to tell me that the last tripod she was using was nice but super light. She said that one day she was filming our daughters competitive cheer team do several technical stunts. When doing so at one point rumbling of the gym’s matts from the team caused the tripod to fall over with a couple of thousand dollars’ worth of camera and lenses in tow. The camera and lens where thankfully not damaged. My wife freaked out nevertheless and chose to use a shelf in the gym for all recording since but at the cost of being able to capture a closer footage. Now she said that she feels confident in the durability of the Joby since she has used it a couple of times already. We even risked my iPhone in the wind to record my son working on his track skills without incident. We have just been super pleased with the quality of this tripod. We will be buying additional Joby items for my wife's hobby moving forward.
