Too much shared data - okay if your only option

As soon as I can get a normal "dumb" thermometer I'll buy one and take my data back.

We're sorry to hear about the Smart Ear issues with your children. We stand behind every thermometer, and know you have already returned your thermometer but wanted to provide some context around getting a good ear reading. Since the thermometer requires a straight line of sight to the ear canal, it can be difficult for younger users due to the ear canal having vary differing shapes, also having to stay still to get the good reading.
In the future, we recommend the QuickCare thermometer which is great for newborns and babies. We also have a QuickScan forehead thermometer that is a lot easier to use for squiggly children. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out at kinsa.help/ContactUs

Wrong info. Won't work without downloading app!

However, it would NOT work at all without 1st downloading the manufacturer's app! ...which I am not doing for a thermometer. I'm returning it and hoping I won't be charged return shipping.

All Kinsa smart thermometers can work on their own without the app. Push the button once to turn it on, and when APP appears on the display, double-click the same button again - as explained in the included instructions. Can't use without app

I'm planning on returning or throwing it away if returning is not on option.

Push the button on the thermometer to turn it on. 2. When APP appears on the display, double-click the same button again. 3. You're done. If I wasn’t sick right now, I would try to return it. I bought it so I wouldn’t be sharing an oral thermometer with my family. Total waste of money.

Inaccurate and inconsistent

It shows my temperature as ranging from 95-98 degrees on repeated measurements and does not match other thermometers at all. According to this thermometer I should be dead from hypothermia half the time.

Not accurate

We're not quite sure which thermometers the Smart Ear is being compared against, but it's important to note that not all thermometers are created equal. A contact thermometer (which touches the body, like an oral thermometer) will always be more accurate than a non-contact thermometer (like an ear or forehead model) But there are things you can do to make sure you get the best readings possible. 1. Make sure the sensor is clean. It doesn't matter how good the technique is if the sensor is blocked with dust or debris. 2. Gently pull the ear back to straighten the ear canal. These two steps will fix most off-readings, and our full guide at kinsa.help/SmartEarAccuracy will fix the rest. Posted .Hey Ricky. We're so sorry that your Kinsa Smart Ear failed you when you needed it most. It's hard to say for sure without more details, but this could be case of holding down the button too long. To power on and take a temperature with the Smart Ear takes just a quick button press. But if the thermometer is turned on, and then the button is clicked again to take a reading, but held down too long, this forces the thermometer to power off. If you haven't already, please try giving the Smart Ear just quick clicks (think the same speed as clicking a mouse) and you should be good to go. When that happens, especially after using the thermometer for a while, this is almost always due to a build-up of dirt on the sensor or not getting the sensor into the right position. Posted .Hey Nwp. Yeah, these readings are definitely far too low. When low readings happen, they're almost always due to a build up of dust on the sensor window and sometimes improper technique. (Since ear thermometers take readings instantly, they rely more on good technique to get good readings) Please try cleaning the sensor with a cotton swab and alcohol, then follow the technique in this video and you'll be good to go! kinsa.help/SmartEarTechnique

If the thermometer won't power on at all, it may have failed during a firmware update. To fix this, open the Kinsa app > Settings > Thermometer Recovery. 2. If the readings are off, please clean the sensor with a cotton swab and alcohol and then use this guide to get the best readings: kinsa.help/SmartEarTechnique

If you're using it to take a reading from either of your two (beautiful!) babies, this might be the problem. Ear thermometers are great squirmy and fidgety kids, but ear canals in infants can be particularly small and curved, making it difficult for any ear thermometer to get into the proper position. This is why we recommend that parents use a device such as the Kinsa QuickCare thermometer for the most accurate readings for infants.
