KitchenAid nightmarePosted .No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I'm writing a unique review, since we have now received FOUR defective units in a row of the stainless version of this model over the past 15 months or so. As I pointed out to KitchenAid, it's as if my experience has offered them a snapshot of 4 random sample units pulled for quality control over a period of over 12 months...and the results are terrible. However, Whirlpool could not have shown less concern for me as a customer or for their obvious quality control issues. Their concerns seemed to be only for their legal liability. The problems --all being manufacturing defects as admitted by Whirlpool-- have ranged from a warped cabinet/door resulting in a fridge door that stuck out beyond the freezer side and wouldn't seal; a unit that leaked an extensive amount of water on our kitchen's new hardwood floors that came from inside the refrigerator (not the water line or dispenser) and was a mystery that was never solved but caused severe floor damage, yet Whirlpool wouldn't involve themselves with the problem at all and left it up to the store to handle (I'll now be filing for damages); one had a broken compressor that made squealing/whistling/droning noises on delivery but took months of service calls to diagnose and replace (was told it would've been about $800 if not under warranty...and this last one sounds like it's going out as well...just a few weeks into it); temperature and display controls that are broken upon delivery (ie, set it and never shows actual temp and dispenser display "cryptic" because full LCD screen doesn't work); one had RUST on the stainless freezer door and dead mosquitos inside when the delivery guys unpacked it and opened it for the first time; numerous cosmetic defects on delivery - esp with dispenser plastic (rough cuts around LCD display, chips in interior lining, etc.); ice and water buildup in the freezer that had numerous repair calls but could never be resolved; and an annoying habit with one of the units going into defrost mode up to five times a day. When the units were working properly, it has the loudest compressor and condenser fan of any refrigerator I've ever heard - a loud, droning noise like a plane that changes pitch and believe me, it runs a LOT. I would have never thought about refrigerator noise being a concern before purchasing this product. It's disturbing in the adjacent family room even while watching TV, but almost unbearable at times in the kitchen. This has been the worst product I've ever purchased and KitchenAid (Whirlpool) has been an absolute pain to deal with, initially refusing to get involved, then using stall tactics that would try anyone's patience. Life is too short, people are too busy and products are waaay too expensive these days for these kinds of problems. Whirlpool seems to be very arrogant now that they own practically every US appliance line. Speaking of, please be aware this is very likely essentially the same refrigerator as the similar Jenn-Air, Whirlpool and Maytag counter-depth refrigerators, since Whirlpool makes them all, and even some models for Kenmore and Ikea.
