Consumer Beware, warranty is not what is seems

I bought a KitchenAid refrigerator in November of 2012 from Best Buy in Huntsville, AL. Within 6 months it has developed a leak and now is broken to the point where it cannot be fixed. There have been 2 separate appliance repair companies that have come out a total of SEVEN times to "repair" the refrigerator. One appliance company was dispatched by Best Buy and the other by Whirlpool customer service. It has been deemed by BOTH repair companies that it is not repairable. Not to mention whenever new parts have been advised to replace, they all have to be ordered factory direct from Whirlpool and takes at least a week to come in. Whirlpool “tech-line” has refused to admit the problem is non-fixable. Dealing with Whirlpool customer service has been a nightmare. All I have gotten from them is nothing but a run around. Customer service explained that I have to call the repair company so the repair company can then call tech-line and tell them the appliance is not repairable. However, the appliance repair company can’t call tech-line and submit a report saying it’s not-repairable because tech-line says it still can be fixed by replacing parts. The only authority that can deem the appliance non-repairable is Whirlpool. Even though 2 separate companies have said the appliance is broken and cannot be fixed, Whirlpool refuses to admit fault. My fiancé and I have been living out of coolers for over a month now, having to buy bags of ice every day and not to mention the hundreds of dollars of spoiled food that has gone to waste. I am hoping consumers will read this and beware of Whirlpool products and their “manufacturer’s warranty.”

I was a little nervous as there were many reviews complaining about the fridge being noisy, but decided to go forward with the purchase anyways. After the refrigerator was delivered and they guys left, I put the food that had been sitting on the counter for 20 minutes into the fridge and put it on the Max Cool setting. For the first 30 or so minutes I was ready to call the delivery guys and have them pick it up and take it back. It was very noisy and I felt I should've listened to the reviews... Once the temperature reached the set point, the noise quieted down to the sound I was hoping to hear from a refrigerator at this price point. Only once or twice since then I have heard it as loud as at start up and that was when I left the doors open while loading it up with groceries. I don't cool my house with this unit, so the noise is not an issue like many reviews have said. (FYI - I basically have it as a "built in" with a wall on one side and cabinets all around the rest so I don't know how the noise would be if it were out in the open.) I was also worried about the ice maker not keeping up with my needs, but have been pleasantly surprised by its ability to make ice. The Max Ice setting is great too! Don't expect it to keep up though if you're entertaining a group of ice-hungry people. You may want to stock up on the fridge's ice a couple days ahead of time. It says in the manual that it can make up to 5 lbs a day on the Max Ice setting (3 lbs on normal). The only thing I have an issue with is the Measured Fill option. I can calibrate it perfectly and then try to fill the calibration cup right after and it will be a little off. When needing precise or large measurements, I don't use this option... unfortunately. I will check into any options to fix this issue.

I read reviews and never write them but this purchase compelled me to do so: Was excited to get this new Kitchenaid fridge. Figured it is the same as Whirlpool which generally gets great reviews. Purchased one and the seal on the freezer was bad. Ice/ frost built up like crazy in less than a week. Best Buy was awesome came out and replaced with another. Unfortunately the replacement was even worse-- that is, the ice maker had frost build up all along back wall inside fridge. Water would drip down on groceries from roof of ice maker and all down the door both inside fridge as well as through dispenser on door. When you go to get ice, a bunch of water drops in your glass. Great if you want water or you like watered down soda. Yuck! In addition, the water tastes terrible and this is with a new filter. We ran lots of water through as instructed, but it never improved. Total disappointment and completely maddening. Luckily, the folks at Best Buy have been great to work with and will be replacing with another refrigerator that is not Kitchenaid. Maybe this is just a first year problem as this is a new fridge, but it is not the quality we would have expected-- and certainly not worth the additional money over a Whirpool.

    Buy Something Else

I purchased this appliance in May 2014 and within one month the compressor failed. I contacted Best Buy and a Geek Squad technician come out but said that replacing a compressor was not within his ability and I would have to contact KitchenAid. KitchenAid customer service was horrible. I was on hold for an extended period of time and then the representative said that the soonest they could have a Technician respond was four days later and that was just to diagnose the problem. Then they would have to order the compressor and return to install it at a later time. It did not matter to them that a Geek Squad Technician already diagnosed the problem. I then contacted Best Buy about the problem and they had a new appliance at my home the very next day. In August 2014 I noticed ice buildup on one side of the interior freezer door. I contacted Best Buy and they sent out a Geek Squad Technician who diagnosed the problem as a bad freezer door seal. Best Buy ordered the part and the Technician returned the following week to make the repair. About three weeks later we noticed that the ice buildup problem was happening again on the same side of the interior freezer door. We contacted Best Buy and they transferred our call to the Geek Squad who wanted to come out a second time to fix it but we told them that we didn't want to deal with KitchenAid customer service or their appliance anymore. Best Buy was good enough to offer to refund our money so we could purchase another brand. Best Buy treated us pretty well through all of this but they should stop selling KitchenAid products in their stores.

    Durability and Warranty Issues

Hello, Purchased this top end unit (KitchenAid Signiture Series French Door Refrigerator) and 10 months later it stopped working. Under warranty, but warranty repair process through KitchenAid is long and frustrating. Five weeks into process and 4 service calls without a fix. Love the look and the features of this model, but it failing after 10 months of use is very disappointing. Issue: Freezer barely gets below freezing, top unit doesn't cool and ice maker stops working. Repairs to date: Replace two fans, control board and some switches. Next service date scheduled starts week six without a refrigerator and no rental is offered. Warranty service people are professional and nice, but the process is basically we'll keep replacing parts and working on it until every possible repair scenario is exhausted and then we'll consider other resolutions. Not sure how long this will take, but speaking of exhausted...we are tired of this situation. My advice, Bing "Number of Complaints against X appliance" and look for appliances with the lower number of complaints. If we would have done that we probably wouldn't have bought the KitchenAid unit we did as it has lots of complaints. We would chill out, but alas we don't have a "chilling unit". :) Thankfully it didn't wait until one day after warranty expiration to fail, that would have cost us, the way things are going, more that what we paid for the unit and we still might not have a working refrigerator. Small miracles.

My Architect is the talk of my parties!

After 4 months of meticulous research, the Architect series met my demanding requirements, which included UPSCALE style, performance, and ease of use. I bought all 5 pieces in the Architect suite and every piece has exceeded my expectations. My 3 favorite features are the 'measuring' water dispenser, the produce drawer that actually preserves your produce for at least 2 weeks, and an inner drawer within the refrigerator that has 4 preset temperatures that can be switched between fresh meat, party trays, wine, and deli. I switch the use of the drawer more frequently than I expected to. Regarding performance, I read other reviews about noise, which I haven't been affected by this complaint. Yes, the motor makes a bit of noise during infrequent cooling intervals, but this is a big unit and requires a little bigger motor to keep the unit cool. Noise has not been an issue at all. The ice maker is a bit smaller than what I have had in previous refrigerators, but the size of the ice is smaller, which smaller cubes means you need less ice and actually fit better in a glass. I use a lot of ice and the icemaker responds quickly to refilling. Bottom line, this is an incredible unit that has met high expectations!

My Maytag compressor failed after 7 years, I assume it should last more than 10 years. Cost to fix it is 900 dollars. So shop for new one and know that Kitchen Aid is expensive but found out its compressor is up to 10 years warranty instead of 1 year for Whirpool's family like Maytag. So you know its expensive price includes the extended warranty. Will not consider this machine originally, MSRP $3300, but with discount down to $2500 with larger size and 10 years warrant is worth the try. It's compressor is still noisy but tolerable and according to my wife it can keep the food fresh 1 week longer than the old Maytag. Huge inside with LED gradually light on and silver color inside instead of pure white which you will be tired to see once you see this color. Got two drawers in the freezer which use the space nicely. Only thing missing is the 4th door. I know Whirpool has exactly same model with 4th door but the inside color is white and 1 year of compressor warrant plus about $2400 make it a obvious choice here. Kitchen Aid should come out a new model with 4th door soon with 28.6 cut feet size. It does has a 4th door model now with 25 cut feet and white color. But its chunky ice maker inside make it feel small. If this machine can last longer than 10 years, I will be happy to buy another Kitchen Aid after that.

After pouring over about 100 slightly different available models, we finally decided on this KitchenAid model. It seemed to have the right combination of good looks, features, and price, and after living with it for several weeks, I'm still very happy with our decision. One of the main drivers in our choice was that this unit still has two separate dispensers for ice and water. Most of the models have lowered cost by including only one dispenser so that you have to push a button or two to switch back and forth. Sounds trivial, but actually a pain if you are a frequent ice water drinker and want to quickly fill a glass with only one hand available. Only complaint is that when first installed a rather annoying ticking noise was coming from the back of the unit. I unscrewed the back panel and found that a piece of tape was flapping against the fan. Easily fixed with a screwdriver and scissors.....lucky for me I'm handy enough to sort this out.....others may not have been so willing to investigate.

We bought this product May 2013 and have had nothing but trouble since. The water filter has not worked since a couple months after we had it delivered. It leaks so bad that there is water all over the inside of the refrigerator. Best Buy came out at least 6 times and replaced it 4 times BUT since we did not buy the extended warranty through Best Buy they would not replace the refrigerator. Who would think you buy the TOP of the LINE (the salesman at Best Buy words!) you would need an extended warranty! So we bought the extended warranty through Whirlpool and now we are on our second time having the same problem fixed! Whirpool customer service is non existent and down right rude. When I asked to speak with a manager they put me on hold for 20 + minutes. I explained the whole story to Ricky the manager and he said that they don't have access to Best Buy service records and told me I was "doing the wrong math" since Whirlpool is only on the second repair and it must be repaired 4 times before they will do anything. I would not recommend buying any Whirlpool product for the simple fact they do not stand by thier products!!!

    Monthly Repairs

I bought thisFebruary 2014 at Pacific Sales with my card that is also good at Best Buy. The French Door model has seal issues. Kitchenaid sent repair people to my home so many times, once a month at first and it would have been three visits this month if Pacific Sales had not rescued me from this nightmare of endless repairs. They are letting me get a different model. Kitchenaid wants you to keep this stinker and try to repair it until you go insane, lose your job from missing work to repair it every month, throw out hundreds of dollars of food and learn to live without ice while you pay off a $2,500 plus refrigerator. Thank God Pacific Sales let me get rid of this thing in September 2014, after MONTHS of torture via Kitchenaid. Kitchenaid knows the French Door has issues and they don't want to be responsible for their own mistake. They want the customer to absorb the loss. Don't buy the French Door, you will get stuck with an expensive product that does not work.

LOUD and has ice maker problems

This refrigerator is 8 months old and has two major problems. First it's very LOUD, so loud that we have to turn up the TV volume in the family room. Even my husband thinks it's too noisy. Unfortunately KitchenAid says the sounds are "normal" and that they are just "unfamiliar" to me. I agree, an excessively loud refrigerator is unfamiliar to me and totally unacceptable. The other problem is that frost and condensation build up in the interior rear of the unit and the ice maker doesn't work. Three attempts to fix the frost have occurred, the latest being today, so the jury is still out. But the ice maker is still not making ice and hasn't for almost a month. KitchenAId keeps requiring me to schedule service calls which means I have to take time off from work. I think I've got a lemon and I'm giving up on KitchenAid. I hope Best Buy can help me.

Since my original purchase in 11/2012, I am now on my second unit - the first unit had 6 service calls then was replaced - I am on my 5th service call now. The ice maker when it does work, which is rarely , can't keep up with consumption. When it's not working, 80% of the time, it leaks water from various locations. I would NEVER recommend this unit. Although KitchenAid has been responsive to these difficulties, I have had to be available (away from work) for a total of 50 hours since 11/2012 and I have had to keep a bag of ice in my second freezer in the basement as I rarely have ice in my KitchenAid refrigerator. The most recent service call, they graciously (said sarcastically) agreed to "pay for the parts" but not the labor. Given the extreme issues, you would think paying service in full would be a given.

We have had this refrigerator for about one month and have had numerous problems: ice dam/build-up on the gasketing along the freezer drawer, ice maker barely makes one tray a day, ice maker leaking water in refrigerator and the freezer drawer is noisy and does not operate smoothly. I am extremely disappointed in this product and the customer service has been awful. We have a second technician coming later this week in another attempt to fix the issues. Not sure how many times I will have to take off work to have a new fridge repaired - especially one as expensive as this. If you want a good refrigerator - buy Fridgidaire - I wish I had.

Ice maker failed within 6 months and two months later it is still not working! Kitchenaid has sent a repairman no less than 5 times all to no avail! The repairmen have no idea of how to work on this product and are required to call a "tech" hotline. The ice maker has been replaced, didn't work. The control panel has been replaced, still no ice! Service calls tie up whole days with 4 hour windows, as bad as AT&T! KITCHENAID customer service is horrible and it takes forever to get through only to be placed on hold for interminable periods with no positive outcome. Next time I'll go with LG!

I would love to give this refrigerator five stars because it's gorgeous and I do love everything about it! BUT the first one we got the freezer nor the ice cube maker worked so they ordered us a new one, and gave us the floor model while waiting about two weeks for the new one. We recieved the new one and unfortunately it had a dent on the side (which very well could've been the delivery team) but also the water dispenser doesn't work!!! Kitchenaid gladly scheduled me a maintenance appointment so I hope everything can get fixed because if it weren't for these few things it would be perfect!!

I give this refrigerator a fair rating because I like a lot of the features and look of this fridge but I have had issues with the freezer. I have had frost issues since new, the freezer has had frost build up. Had it worked on twice then Whirlpool replaced the entire fridge and I had the same issue with the freezer again. Many people may not notice this but look on the sides of your freezer door next to the door seal and you will find frost. My conclusion is that this fridge has a design problem. Whirlpool is going to refund my money after I have made so many complaints I am disappointed that I have to go through the trouble of replacing my fridge again.

I really hated my side by side but I am even more pleased than I thought with the french door bottom freezer combination. It's so easy to find places to store things and I am not constantly rearranging things so they fit in the frig or freezer. It's just very well designed. I also like the ice machine/water dispenser features - my son loves choosing the amount of water to fill his glass and I like the smaller ice cubes. Stainless is a little more fussy about cleaning than my old black refrigerator, and I had to get used to the noises it makes but overall I love it.

Expensive French Door refrigerator is a paperweight. This is a new refrigerator and it does not work. It does not cool. Freezer doesn't work. Lost lots of food due to spoilage. KITCHENAIDE customer service is not helpful. Without a refrigerator going on two months. More than 5 service calls. THANK GOODNESS we bought the extended warranty from Best Buy. They really worked hard for us. Attempting now to get a refund or store credit so that we can buy a brand that works.

We decided to purchase this fridge based on its looks in the store. We especially liked the ability to customize the temperature in the meat/produce bin. However, the fridge was noisy right after plugged in, the noise could be heard all over the house. It took 6 weeks for Bestbuy/Pacific sales to finally admit the problem (after 2 techs and 2 store managers visited our house and checked the fridge) and agree to replace with another model. We decided to go with LG. Hopefully it would be more quiet.

....then it died. Out of warranty and didn't get a extension due to my string of luck with other fridges in the past (both lasting 10+ with little to no maintenance)....Apparently I got one of the good ones :-P Doesn't really mater because both the icemaker and the compressor have leaks that cannot be fixed....If you do buy this fridge, get the extended warranty so you can at least get a replacement when this one goes out. Still not convinced? just google the product #. Zero issues with Best Buy, btw. Even got a discount on it when i bought it.
