    SO Far So Good

I bought a new kodak camera and decided to give this printer a whirl, my old one was a dell which was good but the ink was so costly!! I went ahead and ordered this and then while I was waiting for it to arrive I Started to read the reviews on this site and others. I was scared to even except delivery after reading the reviews! I went ahead and did, Boy am I glad i did. First off when you open the box and see everything that worried me too there is a lot to put together. I mean a lot compared to my last few printers, I followed the manual to the tee in every order they said to do. It was smooth sailing then i Installed the software which was a bit time consuming about 45 min. about 30 min into the install it popped a window up saying it couldnt complete the install, However I followed the Prompts and found out i had to go to my Add Remove programs and uninstall my other kodak software and my old printer stuff (Dell) After re installing and doing the web updates everything is great so far. The quality of the pictures is truly amazing I never print at home because I scrapbook and there are so many to print and the quality is so much better at a store, but i might change that at least some of the time I have printed about 5 pictures just showing my friends how good a job it does. The printing was super fast for my documents way faster than my dell. Today I'm gonna try to fax, copy and scanner worked fine, Machine is a bit noisy and sometimes I wonder what its doing in there but Overall I really like it. If you choose to give it a shot all i can advise you on is to Install everything in the order the book tells you too and when it says too dont skip any steps. I think were really gonna like this machine. If you get one I hope it goes as well for you. Great quality and super cool. Also I love the fact that it has a dedicated paper tray for 4x6 photo paper very neat. Also love the memory card slots on front, my old one didnt even have those. Screen is nice to (LCD)

    Biggest Disappointment

I've had this unit for about 4 months. Originally it had to be returned due to paper not feeding properly. This was after about 3 hours of speaking to Customer Service somewhere in Latin America. After the new unit was installed and actually printing, I had occasion to call CS again to configure FAX and spent another 2-3 hours talking to people who just read responses off scripts they were provided. FINALLY got one helpful guy who actually seemed to know the product and was able to help me (turns out manual was wrong!) I was expecting something great from Kodak I suppose and I couldn't be more disappointed in this piece of junk. I have a Kodak Easyshare digital camera and this printer combo just seemed like it would be the logical choice to complement the camera (which I LOVE!) But, unlike other, less expensive printers, you have no options for paper type, etc. I suppose it's so clever it can tell whether you're using matte or gloss paper, but the quality I was expecting is just not there. So, today, I am going shopping for a nice, reliable Canon printer which I should've bought in the first place! Save your money on this one. You'll spend more time and money getting a few prints than if you got in your car and went to your local photo processing center. But, if you do get one, stop and get a large bottle of aspriin before you take it home to set it up. This is the first negative review I've ever posted on a product so that should tell you something about how disappointed I am in this product.

I have been in the computer field since the late 1970's (before PC's - working on Mainframes) and as such have installed and repaired, as well as owned, many printers from all the major manufacturers. I can say that this 5500 is as good as any and better than most. I currently own 2 other AiO printers(other brands) both of which failed after very lttle use. I hope the 5500 lasts longer than the other two but only time will tell... As far as this printer is concerned, I am glad to say that it has done everything stated in the specs very well. I have not tried the FAX feature yet but all the other features were great. I have printed 4x6 prints that are as good as any I've seen on other printers at same price point. I like the seperate tray for 4x6 photo paper. The 2 side printing works great. The installation of the software is slow as was stated by other reviewers but it works well and has some nice features(printer generated watermark as an example). Overall I am very impressed with this product. I will update this review as time goes on and I have more experience with it. So far - so good...

    Product Support Unavailable

This machine was difficult from the beginning. It would often refuse to feed paper. The color printing would become uneven, and I would have to clean and calibrate the printhead - probably at least a half a dozen times in two months. Then I developed a major problem with the color printing. I changed out cartridges and did everything the trouble shooting guide said to do - still bad. So, I began trying to reach customer support - on Monday. First I repeatedly tried the instant messenger on the site - not available. So, I sent an e-mail on Tuesday; and on Thursday. All I ever got was an automated response saying I'd be contacted within 24 hours. On Thursday afternoon, I called the help line. I was put on hold - FOR 40 MINUTES. Then I was CUT OFF! At this point, I wrote my last nasty e-mail saying that, if I did not get a phone call (I put my number in the message), I would return the printer. By Saturday, still no contact. Well, I am now the proud owner of an HP Photosmart, and I'm never going back to Kodak again. A printer which has unavailable tech support is a useless piece of technology.

    A very good printer

The printer is built very well and the installation went very well. The good parts are that the print quality is very good and the photo printing on Kodak paper is great. The cost of the ink is a very important advantage. I have printed a number of photos and have not made a dent in the ink cartages. I have had Epson HP and Canon printers they have worked well but the durability and the outrageous prices they charge for ink and how fast it disappears when printing photos makes me enjoy the Kodak printer that much more. I think they could improve their interface software especially for scanning. The Kodak software is very much focused on photo printing. In my opinion the 5500 is is a all in one printer that has the ability to handle home office business functions and in order to fully utilize the printers abilities improvement need to be made in the Kodak software provided. With that being said the quality and the effective cost of printing makes me believe that I have purchased a printer that I will be able to use for a long time while not being concerned with how much it is costing to print each page.

    So disappointing - FAX problems

I was introduced to the 5500 sometime in June when I met a Kodak rep. in the Best Buy store where I usually shop. We already had a decent (HP) photo printer, but was tired of paying the high cost of ink cartridges and we needed a fax so this new machine sounded great to me. After checking the reviews online I decided to take the plunge and now wonder if I made the right choice. The first machine gave me problems during the initial setup and Kodak instructed me to return it to Best Buy for an exchange. What a pain, but when I finally got the 2nd one home all seemed to go well until I tried using it with my Kodak Easyshare camera software. After finally getting that resolved, there was a problem getting the fax to work properly - I could send, but it wouldn't receive in the auto mode. I've called Kodak on each occasion and received help, but only after hours on the phone. Bottom line - the fax still doesn't work the way it's suppose to. All the other features of the machine work great, especially the photo quality and, after printing out tons of vacation photos, I'm still on my original color ink cartridge.

I wish you could rate this 0 stars, it makes you pick a minimum of 1 stars. After 2 printers, we ended up with a HP. What a disappointment this was. I have had a few different Kodak cameras and printers and have been very pleased with the quality and customer service until this printer. We purchased this printer based on the brand name and the advertisement of saving money on the ink. I got the first printer hooked up and never got past the "print head missing" error. After multiple times of removing and reinstalling the print head and ink cartridges I attempted to get hold of Kodak. After 45 minutes on hold I packed it up and exchanged it for another printer. The second printer came right up with no problems. It printed the calibration sheet and we "thought" we were good to go, then we got the dreaded "print head missing" error. After reinstalling it the error went away, but when printing all that came out was a huge ink smudge across the paper. We tried the head cleaning but nothing helped and we still kept getting the "print head missing". Took it back to Best Buy and ended up with the HP C7280.

Having been associated with the Best Buy computer department for some time now, I would like to think that I have pretty good feel for the quality of products such as this printer based upon the floor display behaviors and the number of printers of each model that get returned. With that in mind, it was my observation that this particular printer was doing very well in the market so I decided to try one. Setup was very simple and my printer has consistently produced high quality photos/scans/documents. One of the pictures that was printed off of this printer ended up being an award winner at a state photo competition. Also this printer came with the duplexing attachment that is normally a special order item! The cost of the ink makes this very attractive as it practically buys itself within a year when comparing ink prices with that of any competing brand. Between the competitive cost of ink and the proven durability of this printer, it almost seems like a no-brainer for anyone looking to get a sturdy all-in-one for home or office use at a wallet-friendly price.

The Kodak perfect picture program included in the software is truely spectacular. You can produce pictures matching the quality of Kodak Labs with little or no effort. The printing features and fax features are trouble free and work very well. With the cost of the ink for B&W and color being very low this has to be one of the lowest cost methods of producing prints. In the past I have had problems with Kodak printer software as it was not very compatible with Microsoft, but this time the installation and operability was very smooth. The features offered are very easy to use and maybe too easy to use as it is easy to look too hard for the features that are already built into the operating system. You can download the instruction book and if there were one complaint it would be that the instruction book is not provided in hard copy with the printer. There are so many features available on this printer that a hard copy instruction book would be helpful.

I have had this about a week. I have never bought anything but hp's in the past and have their laser jets printers in my office. When i learned that my hp inkjet printer has cartridges which time out i swore never to buy an hp printer again. I can drink day old milk but when the cartridge times out the machine is useless. I was hesitant to buy this because of the reviews but bought it on impulse on sale. The installation was flawless and easy to follow and the printer and fax work great. The extra added bonus is the price of consumables. I have a color laser but it can't do photos like this one. The pictures print out great ..no borders as if it came from a store or online service. You can print them right from the printer by puting the sd card in it or download it to the computer with the included software.

The Kodak es5500 all in one printer with fax is an exceptional machine . I do recomend that before you start with puting the printer together that you read all the information that came with the printer this will save you time and alot of frustration. The Quality of the photo finish is unsurpassed by none other. Also be very careful with the print head it can be easily damaged before you even get started so take care there I have bought and owned many a printers in the last 18 yrs and feel that this one is and has been overlooked by pc magazines and the cost of the ink is very attractive and it does a job better than most of the one's that cost a few thousand dollars and they also have an exellent customer service department also. I bought this machine at Best Buy and will continue to shop there cause they have a way of making you feel you are important no matter how much you spend and also have a very knowledgeable staff also. 4 stars for the staff of Best Buy.

    Great machine for a budget

I have owned this machine for almost a year now. I love it. I print alot of items online and would go thru a lot of ink so I bought the machine because the ink was so reasonable. What I did not know is the photo quality is almost as good as my epson picturemate flash and it gave me a variety of sizes to print the photos in. On top of that the ink is cheaper and if I buy the ink at best buy, I get a free ream of paper when I buy 2 inks. When I had trouble scanning into my computer, customer service was there to walk me thru the steps to resolve the problem. there was nothing wrong with the machine, it just needed to be unconnected and connected again. Unless speed is what you need, this is a great machine. My old Brother was much faster at printing but almost double the price for ink so it was a good trade off for me...and I now have a way to do larger photos with great quality at home.

I bought the 5500 at Best Buy and could'nt be happier, it works just like it is suppose to, all the others who say they are having problems is strange to me sounds like maybe they didn't push the printhead hard enough to snap it in place, but who knows, I almost didn't buy it because of all the bad reviews, but then I read a couple of professional reviews and they had no problems, so I bought it and I'm sure glad I did, my Hp was eating me alive on ink and this just goes and goes on ink, really don't know what else you could exspect out of a printer It's a lot of printer for the money, I've printed a lot of pages with no problems, No paper jams which is always a concern, my previous printer was an HP. and I did'nt get one that worked until the 3rd printer, so I guess any of them can have a problem

Unreliable with a terminal error mode problem

Bought this printer from BestBuy, so figured would post this review here. Reliability started to go away a few weeks ago, with black not printing. Printer went into the "printhead missing..." message mode last weekend in which the printer no longer recognizes its printhead. Did printhead reinstallation fix suggested by Kodak website, which did not fix problem. After exchanging emails with Kodak customer service most of Saturday, they finally said replacement printhead would be needed. To their credit, printhead arrived Tuesday. New printhead did not correct problem. Again after emails, Kodak customer service suggested firmware upgrade. After firmware upgrade, printer cycled fine once then went into in paper not recognized mode. After fixing that, printer went into "please wait..." mode, ...forever. Printer worked fine for about 6 months, then bricked itself. Would NOT recommend any Kodak printer.

    Unreliable waste of money

Apparently this thing has a mind of its own and tends to work only when it wants to. Documents come out faded and the colors are always dull and gloomy looking when printed on regular paper. Half the time it doesn't even print or it begins to print but stops and sounds almost like its stuck. I've tried everything from Customer Service to figuring this out on my own. It takes forever to print/warm-up/read memory cards and sometimes it gets mad and spits out paper saying its the wrong paper size. Well, gee thanks for your opinion, but aren't these types of printers supposed to print on any type of paper? We're thinking of going back to our old one. I'd rather wait a little longer on something slower and more reliable than having to cross my fingers and pray that this will work today with no problems.

I read some of the comments on the Kodak 5500 AiO printer. I'm more of a see for myself type of person. I have to other photo printers, I take photo's for school and senior pics, and I got through alot of ink. I wanted to see if this printer would hold up to my standards. It did. The printer sold me and the price of ink is a bonus. I had no problem at all with the install. This was my first purchase with Best Buy. I had ordered as a store pick up item, received an email that it was out of stock. I called the number in the email and was sent the printer with free shipping. I recieved the printer within three days! :) Then one week later, the printer went on sale, I didn't have to call the store, they automatically credit my account. Best Buy and Kodak will have my business from now on!

High hopes - but it's a lousy machine

I have in my possession right now my third 5500 since June 30th ('07). I have had trouble from the start. Jamming papers. Error messages, faxes not working. Latest one now is since an upgrade to the firmware, the incoming fax does not accept nor does the scanner work any longer. I'm totally fed up and will be demanding my money back as I promised I would if I had to send this 3rd one back. They want me to 'try again' but I am unwilling to swap out yet another Kodak 5500 for the fourth time in four months This one lasted the longest.... probably all of 6 weeks. I am just a private individual who prints every day but not excessively by any means. It's a home printer and it's lousy! Sorry, Kodak... I think you rushed to the finish line on this one when it was not ready to be marketed.

I was really excited about Kodak's new all in one printers. I figured their high quality cameras, film and photo paper would make them an credible manufacturer for printers. Unfortunately, I was wrong. The printer worked great for about two weeks when all of a sudden, it just stop functioning properly. I would paper jam error messages when there was no jam at all. The printer make lots of noise just warming up to print. It seems like Kodak was in too much of a rush to bring the product to the market. There's too much plastic an not enough quality parts. Sorry Kodak, you still make great cameras and film. Just not too good with printers. A big thank you however to Best Buy! They made returning the item quick and easy! I was in and out in one minute.

Before purchasing this printer, please take to heart the negative reviews for the Kodak EasyShare 5500. My wife and I typically do a lot of research before jumping into any purchase such as this. However, we found ourselves in a situation where time was of the essence and we needed to hasten our decision. We have both purchased a variety of Kodak products and services over the years, so we figured that a printer with the Kodak name was a sound product. We soon found the Kodak EasyShare to be the exception! Much like everyone else, we had difficulty with tech support, the scanning applications, the easy-touch buttons, the paper loading... you name it, we dealt with it! My advice is that your money would be better spent on any other product!

I was nervous about this printer after reading all of the negetive reviews, but decided to try it anyways. Well, so far so good. I did receive the "print head error" message when I first started set-up, but I removed the ink cartridges, pressed on the print-head, and retryed it and it worked fine ever since. The different trays for photos and paper are great, since you don't have to remove one to use the other. I've also used it to make copies, which turned out great. The top feeder works perfectly, and is much easier than using the flat scanner bed when copying multiple pages. Unless I start having trouble with it, I am happy with this printer and looking forward to saving money on ink!
