    Fantastic printer!

    Posted .

I've had a Samsung ML-1450 Laser Jet printer for about 7 years now and it's been a great printer.. I got it back then because ink-jet prices were pretty high and I figured investing a few hundred dollars on a Laser jet would be the better option. In the 7 years I had the laser jet I've only had to change the toner ONCE. Well the toner is running out now and I've been into photography for a while now and I wanted to get into photo printing and whatnot.. so I did some research and decided to give the ESP 3 a try. For $99 it seems like a great deal & what really sold me was how cheap the accessories for the printer are. About $9.99 for Black ink, $14.99 for 5-in-1 color ink and about $3.50 for 100 4x6" sheets of photo paper. Not to mention the dozens of other "combo" packs Kodak offers. Initial unboxing went well. You get the printer, AC adapter, Printer Head, Black & Color cartridge, software and a sample pack of Kodak Paper (5 sheets of Ultra Premium 4x6" & 10 Sheets of 8.5x10" Ultra Premium paper) And a start up guide. What was kinda odd was the exclusion of a real instruction manual and the lack of USB data cable. Luckily I read about the lack of that before I bought the printer and I just used the one from my old laser printer. First you have to install the print head, which installed easily enough, then you install the ink cartridges, they were easy to install as well, you just slip them in and snap them in place. I did have a small issue when I first turned the printer on.. the guide states you have to let the printer calibrate (about 5 min) then insert a sheet for a test page, but my ink lights were blinking constantly and I didn't really know what the problem was.. So I took the cartridges out and reinstalled them and it worked fine the next time. Once the calibration page is printed you install the software and then connect the printer to the computer. Software installation was a breeze and took only a minute or two. First thing I did was print a demo page, It didn't take too long, but I'm still getting used to the ink-jet printers speed. The colors were great and text was super sharp. I then decided to try printing a photo on a 4x6" sheet, the online manual says you can have up to 30 sheets of 4x6" photo paper at a time, and I had a paper jam when I just used 5 sheets! I'm pretty sure I followed the directions when it came to inserting the paper.. but I've yet to try more than one sheet of photo paper at a time. The photo print came out fantastic, the "3 star" photo paper I bought was actually quite nice! Next I tried scanning something, that was a breeze as well.. I put the page in, hit the scan button and that was that pretty much, i just named the file and that was that. The quality was very nice. I haven't tried to copy anything yet though. So so far the experience has been quite nice, my only "worry" is the ink. So far I've printed a color calibration page, a color demo page, a 4x6" color photo, a 1 page B&W resume and a Gmail email mostly black with some color and my Ink status is at 85% black & 75% color. Soo that kinda worries me a little, I'm not sure how long the ink is going to last.. but it didn't change any after I printed my Email & Resume, so I'll be looking out on that. Luckily the replacements are cheap, again about $10 for Black & $15 for Color. You can also get a Combo pack for about $19 that includes 185 4x6" sheets of Premium Photo paper AND a Color cartridge.. Again a very good deal. So overall I'm very happy with the purchase.. My wife wanted to go with the ESP 5 model but Kodak keeps pushing back the ship date on it. That one has a 3" LCD screen that enables you to print without the need to be connected to a PC. Remember be sure you have a USB cable on hand or pick one up at the store, it's the A/B kind I believe.

    Good performer

I bought this printer to replace my HP 7160 that died just out of warranty. I admit that I bought it based on the sales pitch of lower cost consumables. Setup was mostly easy. I unpacked the printer, removed all the tape and packaging from it, and then followed the quick setup guide. One thing that was different from any other printer I have bought was that you have to install the printhead. I thought this was a bit odd, but realized that this meant that it could be replaced! It was easy to install though. You install the ink cartridges and then power it up so that it can run its self-test. I couple of minutes later it spit out a test print that showed everything was working correctly. Then it was on to the software installation. This was the only part of the installation that I thought was badly thought out. It takes forever! I don't have a top notch system but it is more than adequate. Software installation took at least 20 minutes. It would have been even longer except that I already had some of it installed due to the fact that I have a Kodak Z812is digital camera. I can imagine total software installation taking 30 minutes or more on my computer. Once the software was installed though, you connect the printer to the pc and it was immediately recognized and ready to go. Then it was off to print some of my pictures. They came out looking as good as what I was used to getting from my HP D7160, maybe even better. Output was faster too. Copies from the scanner looked good too, as did photos I scanned. After printer 20-30 pictures and other documents, the black ink was still at 100% and the color was 90%. More than acceptable from my point of view. I would give this printer 5 stars except that I have only had it a few days. The 5th star would represent reliability and I have not had a chance to evaluate that yet after having it such a short time.

    Sleek and Loud

    Posted .

I have read reviews before purchasing this printer and it concluded that this would be a good investment. The look is sleek, offers functionality, and most importantly inexpensive but quality ink usage; most printers either uses ink cartridges that ranges from 23-40 dollars. If the ink is inexpensive then most likely it will get used up after 20 prints. Even though the price of this printer lands in the medium range, I figured it would be a good investment in the long run because the ink wasn't so costly. With the many pros there is one con... it is the loudest average sized printer you'll ever wake up at night to from hearing it callibrate before it starts a print project. I wouldn't recommend it only for that reason. I do alot print projects late at night. Other than that it is highly recommended to most.

    OK, needs work

I bought this to replace a nightmare HP 5280. It was recommended in the store by the salesperson who does a lot of printing of photos. I have to admit the ink is amazing - cheap and does not smear. It's very different from other printers and the print quality was very good. However, this thing is LOUD! I mean, every time you start up a print job it goes through this cycle of setting up the printer and it sounds like a plane is trying to take off on your desk (not really, but you get the point). I didn't believe it in the other reviews, but they are right - this sucker is loud. Also, it prints pretty slow - much slower that the specs say and I wasn't printing anything complex and I was using draft mode. Then I noticed on the invitations I was printing that they were all slightly crooked. I tried adjusting the paper and the feeder guide, but no luck. When I returned it to the store the salesman brought it up before I did that he heard they print just a bit crooked (where was he when I was buying it?). I really did want it to be the one - love the ink, but I returned it for a Canon MP470 which is working well. It isn't as nice looking, but it works!

    Not good for everyday stuff

    Posted .

I have never written a bad review but this printer has ticked me off so much that I have to do it. Not only is it VERY noisy and slow to finally print something, if it's "sensor" doesn't sense enough ink, it refuses to print. And I think there's a problem with the sensor. I've changed the ink numerous times and it stills thinks that there is no ink. It will not do anything, but blink. My other printer would at least print it very faintly, so if I was desperate I could still have a printout. We've written to the company, gotten the "sensor" replaced and still have trouble. I had an HP printer that had expensive ink, BUT I only changed it 2 or 3 times a year. This ink is lasting 4-6 weeks tops and is very picky when it gets changed. I would LOVE to return it, but we bought it in April, and it's too late now. So, my advice for other is: Don't get it! I'm Serious!

Kodak Product, But Don't Use It for Photos

    Posted .

Since purchasing this product a little over a year ago, I had only used it a few times, and only to print documents. A few weeks ago I tried using it to scan and print photos and was extremely disappointed. The prints and copies turned out pixelated and the colors were washed out. Scans were equally washed out and the images distorted even though the print size was still the same. On the prints, using the Kodak "Perfect Touch" technology to auto adjust the brightness, contrast, etc. made the images worse instead of better. Beyond the poor quality of the photos and scans, the ink that was supposed to last twice as long as comparable brands' inks actually ran out in half the time. I would definately not suggest this product to anyone needing to print photos. This is a huge let down from Kodak.

    Best Printer I've Owned

    Posted .

I'm not quite sure why so many people have problems with this printer. I've owned mine for several months now and have not had any of the problems mentioned here. I can agree with the noise. If you prefer a quiet printer, you may not like this one, although the newer models coming out (ESP 7 and ESP 9) may have fixed this issue, or at least improved upon it. It has a long, loud power up and occasionally cycles through the print head when powered up and not in use. I've had a an issue with there being a random power fault, requiring me to unplug and replug in the power cord. I have a red flashing light after every powerup on the paper (methinks because its not fully loaded) but a quick press of the cancel button and I'm ready to print. The speed is great. In draft mode, it spits out color and mono prints. Photo quality is superb, and I can't tell the difference between these inkjet prints and the ones you get from the KPM kiosks you see at Walmart. I have an epson RX680 I use as well, and the prints are very comparable, but with the wider ink selection on the Epson, the prints are slightly more vibrant. But that printer was $200. I got this one for $100 with an additional $50 instant savings after buying it with a camera. The ink costs are great. $10 for black and $15 for color. Much cheaper replacing the whole set rather than $14 a cartridge on my epson (A whole set of those sets me back more than $60). Newer models are coming out, with LCD screens, Fax, and wireless capability and I think for under $200. Keep your eye out. In my opinion, Kodak is in the top three printer manufacturers on the market today.

    Don't Waste Your Money!

    Posted .

Like many others, I bought this printer because it was fairly cheap and Kodak had the least expensive ink. I guess you get what you pay for! I've been using (struggling with) this for about a year now and it has been horrible. The printhead needed to be replaced within a month of buying it. The print quality has been below average, that is, when I'm even able to get a successful print. It wastes tons of ink...the final straw came tonight when I was trying to print some E-tickets in Black & White. It warned me that the color cartridge was low when I started and after printing 6 BLACK & WHITE pages, the color cartridge was empty. Even though I'm printing in B&W, it won't let me continue because the color cartridge is empty. Why in the world does it waste my color ink when I specifically requested to print in B&W?! Now I'm stuck with a 75% full Black ink cartridge and no way of using it to print. I'll be buying a new printer rather than wasting any more time or money on this piece of trash!

The ink is great priced but runs out. The printer is noisey. The printers doesn't read most of the time. You have to unplug it for 5 seconds (all of the time). It Jams! Paper jams continuosly! Very annoying. I actually bought 2 thinking the first one was a defect, so I gave it another try! Horrible buy on my part. My epson maybe spoiled me a bit, but I rather buy expensive ink than go through this! Run away from the advertised ink price, it's not worth the noise or fustration.

    Good Printer

    Posted .

Bought this printer in 02/09, I needed a printer for photos as well as normal daily printing. I have never had a problem, and it is used daily. My sister had the more expensive model that they sold on tv, she had problems with the print head, do not use refilled or cartridges other than Kodak and you won't have a problem with it. BTW Kodak replaced the printhead on my sisters printer for free, it worked just like new with the replacement. This printer is a good deal for a low price, and it does as advertised, if you are not getting good results you can call their help line and they are really good at solving printing issues.I've owned Canon, HP and Epson printers in the past, I found their replacement cartridges to be very expensive, the Kodak does what is advertised to do, I have been able to print over 100 4X6 photos with fresh ink cartridges and still had more than a 1/4 full when done. I scrapbook and scan and print original photos with this printer also.

I threw it away - buy an HP Photosmart Instead

    Posted .

I had high hopes as I am a techie. Kodak has been absent from the consumer printer market for quite some time. It was a good price and the case looked nice. It would complement my desk area and I fell for the marketing info that their ink was cheaper, so the cost of ownership would be lower. Well....that was all fine and good until I hooked it up to my 1 month old MAC. The drivers seemed to install fine, but when I first printed, I had no paper options (to select labels or card-stock etc). The output was also faint as if the ink was dried out. I cleaned the print heads and also downloaded the latest driver and firmware. No change. The output was terrible. I was trying to print standard Avery labels for Xmas cards and couldn't get the printer to accept any page defaults from MS Word. I've done this 100s of times, so I know what I was doing. The driver seemed to be an after thought. Well, actually the entire design and execution of printer manufacturing seemed to be an afterthought. Do not buy this product or any like it from Kodak. You will be wasting your money. Since I purchased it, I lost the receipt and threw away the box. Understanding I didn't have much of a case for the return policy, I just threw it away. I purchased an HP Photosmart C6380 and I love it!

    worst printer ever

    Posted .

I bought this printer because of what it advertised. It didn't deliver anything it promised. I owned a hp printer before. The hp was good printer except for the ink price so thats why we bought this printer. I have owned it for about 8 months and now it won't even print. I have tried everything except rip it apart and call tech support, which I don't have time to do since it takes hours to even talk to someone. The scanner never worked even after I tried setting it up a few times. It takes forever to print. It spits out 2-3 clean pages before it decides to even start printing. It is loud too when it prints. The color ink cartridge is big enough to last a month but the black cartridge is out after two weeks of average printing if I am lucky. The other really annoying thing about this printer is that it takes forever to shut down or start up. I have waited at least a couple of minutes for it to start up again. My advice is to not even consider buying or looking at this printer. The hp I had before worked and that is what I am now looking at to buy. Steer clear of the ESP printers, Kodak does good on their cameras but not their ESP printers.

unit worked for 1 print then stopped working. kodak product support tried 2 ways to fix it then threw up their hands and said it was a defective unit. they said to return it to the retailer or they will send me a refurbished one ... bad service from kodak! good service from best buy who replaced the unit immediately. hopefully i won't have more problems.

    so disapponted

    Posted .

An utter disappointment; constant problems with the print heads even with tests and maintenance. Initial quality is misleading, some images print more poorly than others. HP model 5740 print quality is vastly superior, even with dismal ink costs. The only pros seem to be cheap ink and decent photo printing. Avoid this one at all costs.

    Great, but be careful!

This printer is awesome! As my first printer I'd ever bought for myself, I was a little unsure at first. But after having used it, I couldn't be happier with it. It looks great, prints very well, the copier/scanner works wonderfully, and you can't beat that price! The only frustration I had with it was the lack of a USB cable. I bought this specific printer mainly for it's Bluetooth compatible technology. However, I was unaware that I would have to buy a sperate Bluetooth plug-in for the printer itself. And I had to buy a USB cable seperately many days after I had already set up the printer. Granted USB cables aren't all that expensive, but a little heads up on the box would have been nice! Over all, great buy!

    Extremely Disappointed

    Posted .

I attempted to purchase this Kodak printer, but had to take two back. The first one didn't work - After turning it on, it would indicate that the cartridges were not in properly. After reinstalling the cartridges five times, the warning light went off and the green light on the front near the memory card slot stayed on. It wouldn't do anything else. After talking to custome service for one hour and attempting everything under the sun, they said that I could tak it back to Best Buy or get a refurbished one sent to me. I took it back and got another one. This one wouldn't get past the calibration point for the longest time. After many restarts, it calibrated a page but it was blank. I went ahead attempoted to print a page from Word and the colors were way off. I downloaded the latest software and drivers and still no luck. I ended up taking it back. Bottom line - the printer was a piece of junk. Stay away!

Don't waste your money with this printer!

I'll start by conceding that at least Best Buy gave me a great deal on this printer. I picked it up for about $90 in the store. The good aspects end at that though. This hunk of junk has been rather useless since I took it out of the package. Sure the ink is cheap, but it runs out real fast since you will have MANY failed print jobs . Aside from that, the customer service was at least somewhat quick and responsive. They said that they would send me a replacement part - a new printhead - which seems to be pretty common. However, they would not send me any replacement ink cartridges for all the hassle this thing has been. All in all, YOU SHOULD NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. There is quite obviously a design failure on Kodak's part since this problem seems to be so widespread. Learn from my mistake, be sure to RESEARCH a printer by reading reviews prior to purchasing.

    All Around Printer Works great

    Posted .

This printer has really served me well for what i have used it for. Some people do not like the slow speed of this printer; i think these people are caught in the everyday rush of life. For the few months i have had it, i could not find out, for the life of me, the "draft" option or the "black and white" option. It simply scans great, copies great, and prints great. I would definately recommend this item to anyone who is looking for a low-price, good-quality printer. Even though this printer doesn't shoot out paper after paper with great quality, it prints. There isn't much to say about the speed of it other than it is fast enough for me and should be speedy enough for the normal individual. I can also say that this should not be used for any kind of industrial use; even though its fast enough, it won't be able to get the job done if you are running late on a deadline of any sort. But despite its lacking capability to run at the speed of light, it will do the tasks it is told to do, no questions asked. My biggest issue with this printer is that i cannot find the print draft or print in black and white function. It may be because of my lack of knowledge or it may be due to the program itself. This is a problem for me because i like to print things that contain color in black and white or draft to save on ink. If anyone knows how to do this on this particular printer, and if there is a way to let me know, please let me know! My favorite feature of this product is that it is an all-in-one printer. it does anything that i need it to do and doesn't stop to think about it. The scanner works great, the copier works great, and should i mention, it prints great photos too. When compared to more higher end printers, one may notice that this printer lacks speed, but regardless, i think the printing quality compensates. Overall, i believe this printer is very recommendable and no one should be displeased about its performance as much as they have complained about it in previous reviews. As does anything, it has its lacks; to be specific, it has its lacks in speed and the whole "black and white" thing. Despite that fact, compensation is made by the quality of the prints and of the printer itself. To answer the all important question, yes i would recommend this item to a friend.

    Great concept if it works!!!!!!

I purchased this printer a little over 8 months ago, and now I'm looking for another. Its noisy and uses way to much ink. It's noisy enough to wake the kids who sleep through the washer and dryer. I also have to clean the print heads before it will print anything, thus MORE ink is used than should be. I go through color ink just as often as black (even though I print mostly BLACK documents), because I have to clean the print head so much. Until Kodak fixes the issues with this printer, this and the rest of their printers should be avoided.

I thought I had read all of the reviews before selecting this printer and most were good. This is by far the worst printer that I have owned. I bought this brand so I could print quality pictures, but after one printing the quality was washed out. There was a special that went along with the printer purchase that included enough ink to last a year, but it only lasted 3 months and we do not print frequently. Error after error appeared on my screen with a constant "C" or "E" coming up on the screen. Blank pages, paper jams, and poor print quality are all disappointing! Now the carriage won't advance. After 42 minutes speaking with someone at Kodak customer service, they are sending a replacement but I would rather have my money back to buy another HP. My last one lasted 8 years. Don't be lured by cheap ink and Kodak name. This one is a real stinker!!!!
