    Ink hog!!!

THE GOOD: Out of the box, setup, installed, takes less than 10 minutes. No lies when it comes to fast printing, that it does. Ink cartridges are cheap, like it says. $35 for 2 black and one color. Nice display, and pretty easy to use. EVERTHING ELSE: DISPLAY- Great looking, yes, but even with the power down setting set at one hour, it hardly ever does. Other times, it'll power down soon after use. Mind of it's own maybe? Possibly... INK-The dream of having a color printer that finally takes cheap ink cartridges is quickly destroyed as you watch the ink level drop as the page prints (literally). They fail to mention how much ink is in each cartridge. Not like it matters though, once you start printing, you'll see. It's very little! They claim you save money using this printer and it's "low cost ink", but they fail to mention how long they last. It's rediculous. NOISE- It's a noisy machine most of the time. Doesn't really bother me, but it seems unnecessary. SCAN/COPY- Works great most of the time. High quality scans/copies, both color and b/w. However, it frequently has brainfarts. Failure to communicate to and from the computer at times, and failure to scan/copy at the machine. Happens a little too frequently for me. You can press scan and it'll scan right away, the next time (any amount of time later) you can press scan again, and though it may say it's scanning, it'll sit there forever and not do anything. It does this with other features too. Not a legal bed scanner, which is ok. It forces you to use the top loader, which works sometimes. PRINTING- Fast, both color and b/w are in the 30ppm range. Really not needed though, and doesn't make up for it's many other faults. Quality is ok though, so there isn't a whole lot to say about that. FAX- Works fine. However, to get a fax log report, you must print it, and it has incorrect dates and times that are 5 years old (at least mine did). There isn't any way to change that, that I could find anyways. Stuck in 2004... SOFTWARE- There isn't enough ability to adjust settings on both the computer and the printer. The software just didn't have enough options to change settings. That limits it's ability quite a bit. INSTRUCTIONS-???? Only got a manual that shows how to set it up, nothing else. Computer instuctions are minimal at best. Instructions on the machine are minimal also. And I already mentioned the software... PAPER TRAY- This one is rediculous. You can use legal paper, it does say that, but it's a pain. The inlet tray takes some playing around with to figure it out, but once it's done, it's great. At least they realized some people need legal printing ability. However, they forgot to factor in that ability on the outlet tray. You must set something in front of outlet tray, or build an extention with a lip, just to use legal. It will shoot the papers out, and they'll fall off the tray all the time. Looks stupid when papers are flying everywhere, and they get all mixed up. Did I mention it's a pain? And boy it shoots the papers out. ALL IN ALL- Get something better. I thought Kodak would be a bit better quality, and live up to this saving money on ink lie they spewed all over. They didn't, and this machine will prove that. It replaced an HP, which quit working, that had it's fair share of problems too but had more ability to me. I wouldn't waste the time. It's getting replaced with another machine as it's only here to fill in the gap temporarily, then it's going back. Don't like having to run to the store to get cartridges (cart loads at a time) just to keep it running. Even if it's personal use, a few pages of anything will drain the ink rapidly...

I had old family photos to scan and store. I was blown away with the ease of use. You can put several photos on the flatbed and scan at once. You then just click and can improve color, get red eye out, etc. then click on a file to store them in and you're done!! It's so amazing, I had a cannon flatbed scanner that was very complicated to use, would take hours on end just to scan and store. With this Kodak you can do multiples in just a very few minutes. I had a photo I truly loved but it looked as if it were in a foggy haze, when I scanned and then clicked on the improve color button I could have cried, it abslolutely took out all the haze and was clear as a bell. I almost cried!! Plus it's wireless and we have 3 desktops throughout the house and it works great. Everything is made with Plastic parts now days and I'm very careful with the paper drawers because they do not feel as sturdy as I would like, but otherwise the printing, copy and scanning features work beautifully. (Have not tried the fax feature yet). I've only had it a full week now, so I'm not sure what the long haul will bring. It is a bit noisy at startup, but no big deal... no more than any other printer. And the ink is much more affordable. OH and one other thing, pay attention to the paper catcher, it has a little flip-up piece to catch the paper, if you don't flip it up, it will shoot the paper copies in the floor :) I got this on sale at Best Buy and has been worth every penny for what I use it for.

Kodak - OK with Pictures, Terrible with Printers!

    playday

Bought it in February. Got so frustrated setting it up wirelessly I gave up for a while and went back to it in April. I had another scanner connected and I think the two were conflicting. Finally got it set up and working, with some help of my Indian friends on the other side of the world. Developed problems with the ADF, which I'm not sure ever did work right. I evenutally had so many problems that I've had it replaced twice with a refurbished model, and finally talked them into sending me a new one, which they just did recently. I never opened the new one, and sold it at a garage sale. At least I got most of my money back. Because of my experience with this machine, this was the absolute last Kodak product I will ever purchase. This thing should never have hit the shelves, especially being priced as high as it was when I bought it. Plus - THIS KODAK PRINTER IS JUST TOO STRESSFUL TO OWN! I probably have no less then 20 hours troubleshooting it in the 5 months I owned it. The bads? Noisy, Shakes, washed out colors on photos, can't scan from an application such as word (at least I couldn't), ADF worked well with copies, but not with scans, replaced units are so-called "refurbished" that I'm sure are just returns just like mine, cleaned up, re-packaged, and sent back out to the next complainer. I don't think they repair them at all because so many problems are probably computer related (device conflicts), rather than product related, and both "refurbished" machines I received had the exact same issues as the one I returned. The goods? Not much. The ink is cheap, easy to replace, the text printing is excellent. That's about it. But I have to commend their customer service. If you're not happy with, or can't understand your tech, ask for a supervisor. They are very friendly, and they really try hard to resolve problems. But they have so little to work with because of such a poorly designed and overpriced machine!

I purchased this model a couple of years ago and it has been a nice addition to my network. As the other reviewers have stated it is loud when it runs. I don't use it for large printing jobs so the speed has been adequate for my use. I was tired of running through expensive ink cartridges and chose this printer to save some money. It has saved me a substantial bit of money in ink - as advertised. My biggest complaint is that every 7-8 months the printer starts printing poorly. I run the print head alignment, cleaning tools and will work for a while but then stops printing text all together. This has happened twice in the two years I've owned this printer. The tech support is excellent. The first time I called they immediately sent me an new printer and had me swap out the old one for the new one. On arrival of the new printer it was damaged during shipping and so I used the print head that came with it. I installed it in my original printer and this took care of the problem. Eight months later the same thing happened again. I called tech support and this time they just sent me a print head. This took care of the problem. I also had to do a firmware update and now the printer works beautifully. I think Kodak has a problem with these print heads since they don't even question the problem just send you a new one free of charge. The draw back is your out of a printer for a week. Another great feature I've enjoyed is the WIFI ability. It's been very reliable and my family can use it from anywhere in the house. Because of the great support from Kodak I have to say that it's worth the purchase. Overall I am satisfied with this product.

This is my 2nd ESP9 printer. I bought the first one in Feb. 2009 but did not purchase the service agreement from Best Buy. I should have. I dealt with Kodak for problems - could not get the jammed paper error message off - Kodak replaced w/new printer (May, 2009); then Kodak replaced the printhead (Oct., 2009) After these problems the printer worked like a charm through May, 2010 whenI had the same jammed paper error message problem which forced me to buy a new printer. I did a lot of research on other all in ones: HP, Brother, Lexmark, etc. None of these matched the price, ease of use, or quality of photo prints that I can get with this Kodak ESP9 printer. Best Buy had it on sale and this time I purchased the service agreement. I can also continue to use the new ink cartridges that I had stockpiled. So, knowing that I may encounter some problems, I will either be able to get them fixed or at least replaced. When this printer is functioning properly you can't beat its features: easy to set up, easy to replace cartridges, store quality photo prints, wireless connection, and faxing are the reasons that I will continue buying Kodak printers.

Great product for the price, but only for home

Purchased the ESP 9 two weeks ago (08/08/2010). Could not beat the offer of $149 plus the $50 rebate for trading in my 9yr old HP3650 (I paid $69 back then). So far I am impressed with the options I have upgraded to for the money...wireless setup, scanner, copier, fax, photo printer, and pigment ink which will not fade (archivable). The wife factor is a 10; she's extremely happy particularly with the wireless printing and the pigment ink. My thoughts on the unit are that it is well built and sufficient for the home, print quality is more than acceptable, it is great However; this unit is definitly NOT suited for an office setting as the speeds stated by Kodak seem far fetched. However, for the home the speeds are fine (for me!). People complain about the noise, but I consider it acceptable. I do agree with the rest of the folks with the paper tray feeling very cheap, almost brittle. But the rest of the printer feels and looks very solid. Setup was a breeze and the only hic-up I've experienced is an error message saying my black ink cartridge is not recognized, eventhough it is the original cartridge that came with the printer. Seems like it came dislodged. I removed it and re-installed it and voila, problem fixed. So far so good.

I bought this at bestbuy not even a year ago price matched so i got it at a great cost. I know they say the ink is cheap it better be cause you are always asked to calabrate when you have to pull ink or ink head so it waste alot of ink, then to make matters worse it hates printing on invitation cards jams says pull out ink pull out print head over and over and over, my sons graduation was coming up and i had to print invitations and it took me almost two hours to print just 25 invatition. Called kodak they sent a new print head and oh im so sorry over and over lol but they wont give you any ink for all the problems its caused over using. Now its freezing up when you turn it on so i have to pull the plug out of the wall to turn it off. Its loud while printing etc im going to return it using the extended warranty. My dad had trouble with the esp 5 model using alot of ink so he ended up using the warranty and getting his money back. We would not buy another Kodak. We were using HP's and the only reason for the change is they were not compatable with the new operating systems vista and windows 7 and hp wasnt going to mess with updating drivers so our loss. kodak esp models are junk

When I started reading the reviews for this printer I found either people loved it or they hated it. This left me with a lot of doubts. During my research, I watched a video about all the features (love the built in duplexer) and it sold me on buying this printer. Because of the features it offered, I thought, this is the business printer I have been waiting for, not to mention the low cost for ink. So I decided to give it a try. The one piece of advice that seemed to be common with some of the people who loved it was they used the web installation option. I’m glad I took this advice because my printer works great! This may or may not be an important factor because printers can be finicky when it comes to installation and everyone’s computer is different. It may be worth noting, however. It did take a little troubleshooting to get my wireless network connection to work, but it works fine now. As for the noise, I noticed it only during startup when first turning it on and when it prepares to print, but I didn’t find it bothersome. I’ll have to see how it does over time. I’m using this printer wirelessly with both an HP and a Dell laptop running Windows XP. My small business will run a little easier with this one. Thanks Kodak!

    BEST PRINTER!!!!

AMAZING print quality. I would definitely recommend using Kodak photo paper because I had HP glossy photo paper and compared the two and kodak beat HP by far! The colors were more crisp and vibrant and not as dull as HP's photo paper. It comes with a built-in duplexor which is awesome. Most ALL printers normally make you purchase it seperately. The ink is cheap! That's the main reason I went with Kodak! (Next to its print quality) The scanner is really nice. You can feed mulitple pages using the upper tray or you can place the documents on the flat bed scanner. The only thing wrong that I can see is the software that comes with the printer. It seems to have minor glitches but all in all its a pretty cool easy program to use. Also, the "State of the art paper detection" is LOUD. It automatically detects what type of paper as well as what tray the paper is in. Which is fine, but when detecting where the paper is at its really loud. I would definitely recommend this product. It is pricey at $284, but its worth it in the long run!

The best AIO I have ever owned!

    rob01

Software takes about two minutes to install on both windows and Mac. Wireless was easy, only took about 60 seconds to configure. My iMac, Macbook Pro and Windows XP computers can all print pictures or documents wirelessly with no problems. The photo/document paper trays are automatic so I don't have to worry about having the right paper in the tray when I print. This is by far the BEST printer I have ever owned. I had a Lexmark before this and it never gave me a problem but this printer blows the lexmark away in every way. I also had the Kodak ESP 3 before this ESP 9 and never had any problems from the ESP 3 either, I just needed to upgrade to the fax and duplex printing features of the esp 9. Fax, duplex printer, coping, pictures, documents etc all work great as expected. I could not be happier with it. I can print over 130 pictures with one color cartridge. Not only are the color/black cartridges cheaper than the other brands, they seem to last longer also. I also like the fact they dry instantly so I don't have to worry about smearing them or getting them wet. The pigment ink is the way to go.

    Quick feedback

Am compelled to provide this quick feedback for potential buyers, as I was agonizing over the mixed reviews. I've read that the printer is noisy; well, unless you plan to use it in the bedroom where someone is trying to go to, or stay asleep, I would not be overly converned about that. It makes audible sounds, but I am focussed on function. I've read about the control panel not working properly; well, during installation I chose to use the "web install" option - over the provided disk - and the program proceeded to download the latest version (be advised: it is a 408 Mb download) and proceeded to update the printer's firmware during installation ... and, I suspect, that the firmware update seems to have addressed any control panel glitches. The text and photo quality are excellent, and I love the separate paper feeders for regular letter sized paper and for photo stock (5 x 7 or 4 x 6). Faxing and scanning work fine. I'll provide updates - pro or con - as necessary.

    Problems out of the box!

    fisherpainting

Read all the reviews and thought I'd see for myself. Setup was easy for both WiFi and USB. Started setting features for use with my Mac and found minimal software for the Mac. No scanning software ... have to set up and scan from printer, then save to file on computer. Difficult to load photos to computer from memory cards using printer's reader. You need to open menu on printer, then find the transfer photo setting, then transfer. Photo printing is OK. I printed two photos from this printer (on Kodak paper) and a cheap HP photo printer .... NO comparison. Kodak prints were washed out and had a yellow "cast". Blue waters of the Gulf were looking kinda Gray rather than the Blue of the Hp print and the Mac screen. Two-sided document printing was a real problem for me. Documents printed using the duplexer had an enlarged border of 5/8" compared to the 1/4" of a single page. This could not be remedied and was told by customer support that the printer was faulty and needed replaced. I'm going to take their advise and replace it with another ...... maybe another EPSON!

I bought this primarially so that I could save money on the ink cartridges, by far kodak inks are far cheaper than what i had been paying for my printer. I use my printer alot for pictures, printing coupons and etc. and have saved easlily over a $100.00 in ink costs in the 6 months I have had my printer.. It is a little loud and obnoxious when you first turn it on as it calibrates everything but other than that I have had no problems with it. I have noticed that if you are sending a large fax ( 10 pages or more) that it doesn't like to feed all the pages through one at a time, but that is not a huge problem, i just split it up! LOL pictures come out wonderfully! my aunt had sent me a picture, i sent it to the printer and even with out a photo ink cartridge the picture came out wonderfully, I was very impressed with it. Over all I would have to say that this printer has been well worth the initial cost, I did suffer from sticker shock when I first saw what it cost but all ready the printer has paid for its self in the savings on the ink cartridges and time saving.. I have already told everyone I know how wonderful this printer is.

    Worst Printer Ever!

    Posted
    Bray1980

I purchased this product because of all that I've heard about it. It was a major waste of my valuable money. Sure, the ink may be inexpensive, but that's because you have to keep printing the same pages multiple times because the printer messes up so much. My problem originally started when I tried to do automatic double-sided printing. That was a no go! I upgraded the firmware and contacted Kodak support. It kept not printing anything. Instead, shooting out white papers when I use this feature. Along with the malfunction, I get an error message stating that double-sided printing isn't allowed for photo paper. Well, I'm using standard white paper. So, I decided to try to manual double-sided printing functionality. Just as bad! Oh sure! It prints! However, after it prints the odd numbered pages and you turn them around per instructions, it prints whatever page it wants, even those outside of the page range I selected. If you do decide to buy one, good luck to you. And make sure to get any protection plan you can with it. It's just not worth it. I needed a printer for my home business, as well as my school. Just not good.

Better than HP, Epson, Canon, Lexmark

    boydco

It is not often that something works this easily. This is the least complicated printer I have owned ever. The old HP, Canon, Epson and recent Lexmark printers I have had were a waste of money but they were bought before Kodak offerred this model esp9. Last year we bought a kodak 5300 and it works so well we bought this new one for larger prinf obs and direct faxing. Also bought one of the new esp9's for my senior inlaws and they had no trouble setting it up and this is their second printer too. The large display is so easy to understand that my 4 year old seems to have it figured out well enough to print without much trouble. The HP and lexmark were not kid friendly like this new top of the line kodak model. Here's an attaboy/girl and an A+ to the people at Kodak for bringing this printer to the market. If you offer a PC in the futuer as well engineered as your printers I will replaceour apple, compaq and hp with it as they reach the 2 year update or replace stage. Jim

OK, so here it is, honest, I bought this because I wanted an all in one printer that I could print pictures with. The fax doesn't work with my broadband phone carrier (this isn't a Kodak problem, just putting it out there). I've had to call Kodak twice now, once because I left my printer on while I was away on business and apparently you can't do that because the printer head will dry up (in a week), and the second time because I kept getting "top tray paper jam" warning (with no paper in the top tray mind you). Now, I will give it to Kodak, they replaced my printer head and NOW are replacing my whole printer, good for them! The other bad thing I have to say, is that there are some connection problems, not sure if this has to do with my running XP Pro X64 though. On the positive note, this is one sexy printer, when it is working, it prints some of the best pictures I've seen, it beats Wally-World and Walgreens photo labs hands down! They are bright, vivid, and just plain gorgeous pictures. (when it works) I really love the printer, I'm just saddened by all the troubles I have with it.

I bought this printer primarily for printing high quality photos, and I couldn't be happier. The photos are the same quality that I can get for $5 a photo at a photo lab, but without the inconvience and high cost. It is also a great general office printer because it easily scans documents and can do double sided printing. The printer's instructions are very clear and helpful for whatever you want to do with it. The only problem was the printhead. When I first got it, the printhead was already malfunctioning because of rough shipping and handling. When I contacted customer support I was able to IM a representative and after attempting to fix the problem, they sent me a new printhead at no extra cost. The printhead arrived promptly and worked beautifully. The origiinal high price of the printer shoudln't deter people, because it more than makes up for it in terms of convienence, low ink cost, and high quality photos. I absolutely love this printer and am very happy with my purchase.

After having many different printers at work (automotive repair) we were going through alot of ink! decided to try the KODAK line with their simple and very cost effective ink program. Had two of these printers for a year now - both work great, both are hooked up for WI-FI, easy to use, easy to operate. REally like the seperate photo paper tray - makes it simple to print photos! The bad: picture quality (photos) not as nice as my old HP unit, - (colour saturation), speed is a little slower than other units in the past, and a little noiser than I would like but its acceptable. there is a slight lag-delay when sending a job to printer - sleep mode? never checked settings to see if this would change or not, not really that bad of a wait The HELP screen is very helpful, instructions on setup are pretty obvious and clear - especially if you have set up other printers in the past. The cd installlaion disc is useful and has nice programs I have recommended this to anyone who listens.

This replaced an older HP printer that never really worked well from day one. It would drink ink at an unbelieveable rate and constantly had compatability problems. This new Kodak works fast and has a nice easy to read and use screen. As someone else stated, it is fairly noisy but that is on initial start up. I needed the faxing capability and this sends and receives faxes without any problems. I had a stand alone HP fax that had constant error problems. The Kodak, no problems so far. The initial set up took over an hour and a half due to dial up connection and old Dell Dimension computer. The machine will power up when needed and shut down when not used which is also a nice feature. Another nice feature is the ink scale that is always on display on the screen so you never guess how much ink you have left. I haven't tried printing any phots yet though. On sale and $50 old printer trade in brought this down to $129.

Not as advertised, slow print speed, pictures ok not great, sucks ink like thirsty camel, small ink units, buy several at a time you will need them. Does have holes under label, but cost to refill same as new. Did I say loves ink, this baby drinks. 1st unit died 4 months household use, pick up circuits shorted out? Bought warranty smart idea. Should have taken other mfg. when offered. Over 200 in ink since 12/15/09 to 6/1/10 on 5th color 4th black, won't run on black only. Don't set to high quality except for pics. cheaper to print at drug store. MFG lied would use less ink. Both 1st and second units run same slow speed and mega consumption of ink. Fax is great, scanner is a snail, pick up quality good but if you are in a rush not for you. Try a different MFG, please.
