    Great camera for standard use

    Posted .

I purchased this camera to use on my trip to Hawaii. I bought it primarily because I wanted a camera that I could use under water to photograph sea life and it ended up better than I expected. The pictures are really good, vivid colors, both above and under water. Of course it is compact, the LCD is small and it doesn't have a full set of features that most digital cameras have, but I still recommend it for users with the same purpose: just simple use in a trip or something that requires easy use. Don't recommend it for advanced users who expects a bunch of features such as zoom, timer, etc..

Great quality pictures, poor audio sometimes

    Posted .

The picture quality is great underwater, outside, in sun, in shade, pretty much everywhere you'd expect. Even when getting darker outside it is pretty fair. It is a very simple, easy to use, point-and-shoot camera. Not too many special features here. Good battery life records a long time (never even went beyond it's life so who knows how long it lasts). The only complaint is that the microphone sometimes clogs with water when swimming--you have to shake it out a little bit or else there won't really be any audio for those clips you take.

    THIS one you GOTTA buy...!!!!!

I am VERY picky about my cameras/camcorders - I use my pixs in a number of venues, so the quality has to be there. I take pixs in all kinds of crazy situations, so the ease of use and flexibility has to be there. And I am a woman who likes to get VALUE for MY MONEY. I am not even a Kodak fan, this is my first Kodak product, but I doubt now it will be my last. THIS CAMERA/CAMCORDER is the BEST VALUE and has some GREAT FEATURES and can match picture-for-picture with my much more expensive cameras/camcorders. And it TRULY DOES work UNDERWATER. This is a camera/camcorder even my 9 & 11 yr olds can use w/o problems. My ONLY complaint, and it may be something unavoidable, is it doesn't have a flash. I don't know why, probably something to do with it being able to go underwater and/or not very expensive, but it would have been nice to have as some pixs I take i do indoors or at night and would have loved to use this one.

Great camera to carry all the time

    Posted .

I purchased this camera for an upcoming caribbean cruise. I also brought another larger camera with me to use but never got it out. The Kodak Playsport takes both video and still shots and is small enough to carry in your pocket. I snorkeled with it and did not have any problem with it leaking. It is a little difficult to see the LCD screen underwater but was manageable. The outdoor shots were great and had some zoom to it. Indoor shots were ok if lighting was good. Not great in low level light. Overall, I am impressed with the camera and would recommend it to everyone.

    Awesome camcorder for the outdoors

    Posted .

I love, love, love this little camera! I wanted this camcorder from the moment I first read about it on a tech site five months ago. I purchased it on 6/10 for a low price of $129.99 (Best Buy priced matched) so that was an even greater bonus. The only complaint like so many others is the battery life, but I plan on buying an additional one for back up

    The Best Camera?....

    Posted .

We were in the market for a new video camera (to replace our old Sony DVD cam, which shot OK videos, lousy stills, and made it nearly impossible to get the data from the disc onto the computer). After considering many alternatives, we settled on this one. The features that tipped the balance were: HD-quality video. OK, maybe it's a far cry the current pro-level video cameras (choppy video, lousy low-light performance), but the quality is definitely better than our old (non-HD) video camera. 5MP Still Photos. While we won't be selling our DSLR anytime soon, it can now stay home more often. The image quality on this camera is pretty darn good in bright light...good enough that you won't want to lug along a separate still camera most of the time. SDHC memory card slot. Yes, the memory card is an add-on (unlike the Mino/Flip HD's built-in) but you can swap out cards when one gets full (instead of having to download & delete), plus the total memory capacity is greater (up to 32GB possible on a single card). And I frankly think it's just as easy to take the memory card out and put it in my laptop's card reader than plugging in the entire camera and stressing out the USB port. Waterproof & fixed focus lens (i.e. no moving parts). We live in Portland, OR, and yes, it is rains here. A lot. So for outdoor events (kids' sports, camping, fishing, the beach, skiing, water parks, etc) where you'd like a camera that can take a little bit of abuse, this really fits the bill. I would have gladly paid double the price for this camera if it were available for our recent trip to Hawaii--we went snorkeling several times, and went through 4 or 5 disposable underwater film cameras--and got low-quality fish pics in about half of our shots. At ~$20 a pop, this would have nearly paid for itself on that trip alone. And I could have had some _videos_ of sea turtles swimming around, not just a still frame with half a turtle :). The waterproof seals work fine--it has been submerged many times in bathtub, swimming pool, and lake water with no ill effect. Ease of use. Our 5-year old daughter has mastered using this with about 30 seconds of showing her which button does which. And even our 2 year old can start & stop recording. Portability. This thing is so small & light, you don't have to think twice about whether you want to take it with you. Cost. The price makes this kind of a 'disposable digital'--if it gets stolen/lost/damaged, you aren't out all that much dough. In short, the question newbies often ask of professional photographers is what is the best camera? Expecting to get a detailed answer having to do with overall cost, German or Japanes optics, metering modes, shutter speeds, longest zoom lens, strongest flash, longest battery life, etc., a truly seasoned photographer will tell you it doesn't matter; it's the one you have with you when that once-in-a-lifetime moment occurs. By this measure, this is an excellent camera. I think Kodak is going to sell a lot of these. I've already bought 2 of them (one for us, another for a wedding present). P.S. This camera is not designed for low-light use. We have also had one instance in which the video capture froze while shooting a long clip, necessitating battery removal to stop recording. My hunch is that the memory card couldn't keep up (we've since gotten a bigger, faster, card, and haven't had any similar problems). But even if the camera was to blame (and is not trustworthy for 'mission critical' applications or shooting longer clips), I would still give it 5 stars, as it fulfills its intended purpose admirably.

    Great camera for the money!

    Posted .

For the money this camera is very good! If you are within 15 or 20 feet it does the best, because there is virtually no zoom. The zoom is the only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5, but I dont think you can realistically expect to get a great zoom for $120. This camera is very simple to use; although I don't know how to use all the features yet. After the first time I hooked the camera up to my computer and let it download its software, I think it is much easier to just take out the memory card and insert it in to the computer and download that way. Either way is not too bad! I had concerns about how the still pictures would work, but it is really easy to use. Once you download the video, you can take still pictures at any point in the video you want. I have had this camera about a month and I am very happy with this camera for the price!

Amazing camera packed in small package

    Posted .

I went into this purchase video camera expecting to return it. I thought no way is a $150 HD video camera that water proof going to make good videos. The first video I made was in my dark living room. At first I was thinking... video so so. I then pulled out my $600 JVC Everio HDD video camera that’s only 2 years old. I recorded at the same time with both cameras. The Kodak blew the JVC out of the water. The Kodak video was brighter clearer, and you could see the JVC DVD quality vs Kodak HD. The Kodak HD was defiantly better. Then I went outside to test them. I said to myself no way the Kodak going to do better is the bright sunlight. To my surprise the Kodak blew the JVC out of the water again. So now I’m thinking well my JVC has 32x optical zoom and the Kodak only has 4x digital. So I compared the zoom. zoomed in 4x on both, now granted the digital zoom will lower the quality of the Kodak video and the JVC was using optical will not change the video quality, but when you play them back the Kodak started at a much high quality so even when using the digital zoom they ended up being equal. Now I personally don't use the zoom very much and when I do I don’t zoom it’s not too far because I can’t hold my hand steady enough not to make everyone watching it motion sick. Now granted this is not a professional HD camcorder so you’re not going to get that amazing HD you see on TV. But this camera by far blows any non HD camcorder I’ve ever used or seen out of the water. Taking video under water… Now that is something that is amazing. The video quality is outstanding, Cristal clear. Now the microphone and water causes an issue. When you go under water the microphone hole fills with water, and doesn’t drain on its own. You need to blow the water out or shake it out. Otherwise you audio will be muffled for the next 10 or so mins until the water drains on its own. So annoying.. but its easily fixable if you are aware of it. I also tested out the 5mp pictures and compared it to my 10mp Cannon. Now granted 5mp isn’t anything to be proud of but it defiantly did well. I compared 5mp on the Kodak to 6mp on the Cannon (it doesn’t have a 5mp option). The picture looked good but it wasn’t as crisp as the Cannon. When you zoom in on the picture on your PC the fine detail seems to be blurred out. But it defiantly is good enough quality to use when you don’t have your digital camera with you or you’re afraid to get it wet. This Kodak impressed me so much that I’m not going to return and my JVC Everio HDD is in my opinion now worthless so it’s going to sold off with the rest of my unused electronics.

HD1080P Camcorder that can be used Anywhere

    Posted .

As a gadget guy I am constantly looking for new things that simplify my life. When I found myself having to record my kids wrestling matches I started looking for a portable camcorder that was easy to set up, use and carry around. Like many I did some research and narrowed my choices to the Cisco Flip and Kodak PlaySport. I selected the Playsport for three reasons: 1. True HD 1080P recording capability 2. Simple point and click film capability 3. Removable SD cards for those times I forget to transfer work. I have now had the PlaySport for 60 days and I must say I am impressed. In addition to the high quality recording capability, I have found the image stabilization to be good and the 5MP camera to be more than serviceable. I also love how this camera can fit in your pocket ready for use whenever you need it. By far the most impressive feature is the underwater use to 3Meters which i tested with no issues. I also found out how durable the playsport is when I dropped it from the top of High School wrestling arena seats (about 12 feet) and recovered it without a single scratch. My only two gripes, poor battery life (less than 1hr in 1080P mode) and less than stellar in low light conditions. Then again for $130 bucks this camcorder does everything I expected. Bottom line: This is a great mini-camcorder with a ton of features that the FLIP does not have. When you throw in that the Playsport is $130 vs $190 for a flip without 1080P capability and no removable SD card the choice is a no brainer. Now go Play.

Excellent camera for the active family.

    Posted .

Great camera to have for toting around to soccer, tae-kwon-do, etc. Love the ergonomic feel of it. Easy to choose type of video you want (WVGA, HD, ...). Inside pics and videos have turned out pretty good for what we use it for. We have taken video in several lighting conditions, from bright to a bit on the dim side, and we liked the quality of the video. Granted, we are not professional photographers, but this camera does a fine job of preserving the memories. The software provided with it sucked. Seemed to lock up all the time. If you read the agreement, it specifically states that there is a usage tracker installed that will send tracking information out to somewhere. Even after I uninstalled the software, the tracking portion remained. Got rid of it with CodeStuff starter and going into Windows Explorer to delete the folder. Recommend not installing the software when you connect the camera to the PC. Loved the camera, hated the software.

    Nice, there's no pause button

    Posted .

Generally this is a nice digital camcorder. Holds a charge nicely. I had misplaced the unit (found it under my car seat) for several months and the charge was still over 50%. The downside is there is no pause button. Not sure if this is the case with all brands of this type of recording device, but it is frustrating when I want to record hockey action but pause through the lull (like when the ref blows the whistle for an off-sides and retrieves the puck and gets the kids on the correct side of the face-off circle). I have to start a whole new recording session if I want to pause the action. Other than that, I like this unit just fine.

    Just add water.

When reviewing a camera like this you have to look at what it is and what it isn’t. It is a sub-$150 waterproof HD SD card camera, it is not a medium-high end HD camera and honestly you can’t compare the two fairly. When comparing it to other similarly priced cameras ($100-$200 range) it is easy to see why this is such a great camera. Looking at any camera in this price range you should realize that it is a basic camera, it doesn’t do well in low light situations, it doesn’t have a light source and while it says it will do 1080p it really shines at 720p 60fps. Let’s be honest though, if you are looking for a camera that will do 1080p spectacularly you really are looking in the wrong price range and you won’t be happy with this or any other low-end camera. Outside or in well lit areas this camera is a joy to use, the picture is clear and surprisingly not as pixelated as you might expect. I paired mine with a 4GB Class 4 SDHC card and have been very happy with the results I am getting, I get about 46 minutes of 720p 60fps recording. Battery life is very good, once again though at this price range expect realistic battery capacities, I have squeezed out 80 minutes of recording without even draining the battery completely, don’t expect to get 3-4 hours. I recently took it to a water park and tested it out in and out of water, under waterfalls and even when it wasn’t being used it was in a pocket submerged and I experienced no condensation build-up or excess water retained. PROS - - fantastic value - you can put it underwater - solidly built - includes HDMI cable - picture looks incredible - easily switched from video to 5MP stills (would have been nice to have a single button switching but it is handled very well and is easy to do) CONS - - image stabilization is almost non-existent - no cover for lens when not in use - mic is the weakest part of the camera (wind, under water) - 1080p recording can get jumpy - the menu and book elude to the possibility to high contrast and black at white options, not for actual recording just for display and not very useful - no LED light for less than optimal shooting conditions - limited to widescreen 5MP stills For under $150 this is a great value and delivers something that similar priced cameras don’t offer a camera that you can submerge and not void the warranty. As I said, I’m very impressed with 720p 60fps shooting and feel this is where it shines, as long as there is good lighting. This is a camera that you can throw in a backpack/purse (in a case to protect the lens) and if it is raining it doesn’t matter. If you are looking for a basic HD capable camera that is waterproof than this is the camera for you and for the price you really can’t go wrong.

I had been wanting a waterproof or water resistant video camera to take on my jetski to capture my rides, primarily for myself to review. I had been looking for a POV or Point-of-View camera and while these are getting better and more popular, they are not yet at the consumer commodity price that this camera sells for. After reading the other reviews I decided to get this camera. Wow, what a fun and easy to use camera it is. The HD video is very good, as long as you have enough light. The image stabilization seems to work quite well. The video reads right into my macbook and is easy to send to youtube. The video on youtube is half of the quality taken by the camera and seen when playing directly on the TV or computer. The box includes a HDMI cable to connect the camera directly to the TV for playback. I will take this camera with me to all outdoor events and have been filming the kids soccer games with ease. They love to see themselves on youtube. I am looking forward to taking this camera to our next amusement park visit.

    Great camera!

I purchased this camcorder because I needed something to record my daughter's karate tournament. I didn't want to spend a lot of money and chose this camcorder after extensive research. I am very happy with this camera! I bought it two days prior to the event to allow for my "learning curve". Let me say that was not even necessary. You literally take the camera out of the box and turn it on after charging for two hours and you're ready to go. It is extremely user friendly and I love the fact that it had all the cables included. I have played it back on my regular TV (cable included) and my HDTV (cable included) and the picture and sound quality are very good. I am very happy with the picture quality although some reviews said it was not that good. After all, I am only capturing precious moments for my family to watch later and not filming feature length movies. It serves its purpose well and for the price you really can't beat it! I would highly suggest the camera if you are looking for a small, fun camera that is easy to use and you don't want to spend a lot of money.

For the money this is a great HD camera

    Posted .

I bought this camera because my old one (3CCD Panasonic mini-DV) just wasn't being used since i had to copy everything from the tape. Well let me tell you this small little camcorder takes beautiful video. Outdoor daytime in the good light picture is crisp and HD looks great on my 52" HDTV. I used 720p (60 frames/second) and it catches every moment, with kids running and moving. Indoors there is a definate degradation in video quality when there isn't enough light. but it is sill very usuable. Video without good light is a bit grainy but still looks good. Remember this camera is only $150 (now $120). The still pictures are OK. this camera fits great in the packet and you can carry it with you everywhere which is important. I get about 1 hour 30 min of recording time @ 720p 60f/s. The battery isn't very good, but did last me a full day with about 40min of recording on the vacation trip. I would recommend this product. btw HDMI cable is included

Got the Kodak Playsport camera on a whim to take digital videos of our great grandson. The camera has worked flawlessly for want we have been doing. The only drawback of the camera is that it has no flash ( I knew that before buying it) and some inside pictures and video can been very grainy. But hey that's to be expected with no flash. The outside pics and videos are so nice and the high speed mode makes for great slow motion playback. The software with the camera is so so but I've been using another video editor so I have no problems. Everyone who sees this camera thiks it a cell phone and is amazed that it takes such good video and pics. Overall this camera is a great buy for just about anybodylooking for an inexpensive way to take good digital videos.

Overall a great portable camcorder :)

    Posted .

A million times better than the flip...tweeners are going Gaga over those things and in comparison to the Kodak Playsport, there is none. Full HD AND 60 frames per second which comes in handy when outdoor activities come around. I use it all the time, the only downfall is no flash with picture taking :( It's a great device for quick on the go video tid bits. Software is easy to install, best off all, expandable memory :) An HDMI cable is included which was a definite bonus and it is super simple to use, Both my two year old sister and 65 year old grandmother have found their way around the record and pause button. Best bang for your buck when it comes to quick shoot camcorders :) Regarding the battery life, I have had no problem with it. I can record upto 3 , sometimes four hours on a single charge, mainly because I bring down the contrast level to conserve battery. A very rugged camcorder. Tiny but mighty.

I really love this camera! its really nice and it comes with both hdmi cable and av cable which surprised me. i watched reviews on youtube and i never saw it in person until yesterday when i bought it and i thought it was small but its actually the perfect size. I also thought the video editing software was going to be simple but turned out it was just what i needed. i wanted the purple one even though im a guy but they only had black. They only sold all colors online but its ok. it matches my revo. and dont make the same mistake that others made. by buying a regular sd card. YOU NEED A SDHC SD CARD OR ELSE YOU WON'T HAVE ANY VIDEOS! i know it says sd/sdch but please buy sdhc

    Awesome Camera

    Posted .

I was looking for a cheap water resistant camera to take to Disney with us this year. This camera advertised HD picture quality and was water resistant and was $150(when I bought it at Best Buy). Much cheaper than anything else I found on-line. I decided to try it and I have not been disappointed yet. The video picture quality is incredible. The still picture quality is only 5MP. If you're used to higher quality pictures you may be disappointed with the quality of the still shots. However, you can switch between video and still easily and the camera keeps everything in order. So if it's a "Kodak moment" (sorry I couldn't resist) you can snap a quick picture and then go straight to video to get action shots. It's just really easy to use. Someone has already discussed the downside in the low light settings, but I would still recommend this camera. I took this camera to Blizzard Beach and used it on every ride. I have some great first person video footage of the rides. I also used it in the pool at he resort. I submerged it to take video underwater. Again the video quality is superb. There is an H2O feature, but I tried the video without going through the steps to put it in water mode and it still worked fine. I"m not sure of the difference to be honest. The underwater shots are really cool! I took a wrist strap from one of my Wii controllers and used it on this camera. It stayed on my wrist on every ride and I had no problems with it. I even used it on rides throughout Disney World and Universal Studios. The wrist strap that comes with it doesn't have a way of securing it to your wrist. Battery life could be better. I would recommend at least one spare battery. That will give you about 2 hours of video capability. An 8MB memory stick allows for 2 hours of video footage. GREAT CAMERA!! WELL WORTH THE PURCHASE!! I definitely recommend this camera to my friends!
