This Kong is 100 ft tall!

Kong. Love him. Always have. But this version is a true colossus and I am very happy to see him presented this way. I don't want to say too much about the movie so as to not spoil anything but I will say this...if you're expecting to see the same Ann Darrow/Empire State story we've seen 3 times already and will be disappointed if this movie doesn't deliver that, then this movie is not for you. But if you want a new tale on the King and are ready for a different spin on his pure awesomeness, then pick this up. You will love it! Personally, and it's hard to admit this, but I think this might be my favorite Kong movie and I'm old school. Old school enough to say that the first King Kong from 1933 was the best monster movie of all time. Just my stupid opinion. But Kong Skull Island may have just taken the title. Judge me if you will but it's that good!

    Quite a surprise

I always loved a good monster movie. But when I saw they were doing this, I wasn't interested. The only reason this film exists is because the studio greenlit Godzilla vs King Kong and didn't realize the size disparity between the two combatants. They rushed Skull Island so they could ultimately get back to the main event. However, I enjoyed this film more that I ever expected. Unlike the 2014 Godzilla, Kong spends a great deal of time on the screen. They weren't shy at all about putting the big guy front and center! There is plenty of eye candy and beautiful vistas (it was shot partly in Hawaii). It has the framework of the Kong films that came before, but with some subtle tweaks. There is no abducting the pretty girl in this one, for example. Overlook the gaping plot hole when they first reach the island (bombs away and not one scientist objects?!?), and enjoy the ride. The steelbook itself is a version of the teaser poster and looks nice. And it is available in a 4K version - score!

    A Remake That Doesn't Suck

Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.

I worry about remakes cause they usually do the same story as the original with just more up-to-date special effects. But this one only kept the original premise: people going to unknown island and find King Kong and now it's survival on the island while also dealing with personal demons. I can't wait for the matchup of Kong and Godzilla

Best Kong film since the 1933 original

    |
    Posted .

“Kong: Skull Island” has been generally ignored as a serious film which is a shame as it is an unexpected revelation in every aspect of filmmaking. Skillfully directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, it is by far the best Kong variant since the 1933 original, far superior to the Peter Jackson remake of 2005, with an ingenious script that creatively mates “Apocalypse Now” with the Kong original. It also boasts top-notch cinematography, beautifully shot on location in Vietnam. Even its music score is one of the best of the year. I guess merely the idea and title of the film cried out for being condemned by critics before they even saw it. It's great!

I first saw this movie on DVD when it came out and really enjoyed it. I thought it would look great on my new 4K player and bought in that format. I can see some differences but not as much as I though I would have. If you can get it for a good price then buy it in 4K. It sounded pretty good in regular DVD format.

Kong a better actor than humans

    |
    Posted .

I'd give the human actors in Kong a so-so rating of about 3, and spectacular Kong a 5, averaging to 4 stars. The human actors don't seem scared enough when they're in danger, and they don't seem relieved enough when they've eluded danger. They're acting isn't very convincing. Kong, on the other hand, is completely convincing in his appearance and in his behavior. Credit spectacular computer artistry for those qualities. When he's enraged, he truly rages, as in his battles with colossal monsters. When he nurses his wounds, he is a stoic warrior, who nonetheless knows pain. And when he feels sympathy for the humans he encounters, you feel his compassionate side. See Kong for the great range of feelings that computer generation can give a being, and forgive the human actors in the movie for their middling performances. The humans aren't the main attraction anyway.

    Fantastic Spin on a Classic

    |
    Posted .

I wasn't sure what to expect from this film because the only thing I knew for sure was this wasn't another retelling of the classic. If you haven't seen Kong Skull Island yet I won't ruin the story for you. But I will say it is more about Skull Island than Kong. In fact I think this film had a lot going on and this kept it from being great, I kept wondering what was the point of the film? Ultimately the final scene sets up what's to come in a hopeful franchise of giant monster movies. Was Kong Skull Island good? It was enjoyable, the special effects were fantastic. The story was average and not confusing, fairly straightforward. I purchased the 4k-3D-BLURAY Steelbook. I've watched all three versions and wasn't disappointed with any of them.

Here is another 4K title that is well worth the price for it. 4K definitely makes everything seem more lifelike and realistic. It is also has ties to Godzilla : King Of The Monsters, as Godzilla vs. Kong is expected to be a theatrical release some time in the not too distant future.

    Way better than I expected

Kong is a lot of fun, and it wastes no time getting to the action. A great cast, some entertaining dialog (thank you, John C. Reilly), and amazing special fx (of course) all work well together to make for a fun ride. It is Kong, however, so don't expect a groundbreaking original story, but that isn't a bad thing here. This is exactly the movie a good Kong flick ought to be. I've watched it twice already, not too far apart, and it holds up. I should mention both times I watched it in 3D, so that might make me a little biased because personally I get way more enjoyment watching movies that way. That said, the 3D works really well for this one, and the sound is phenomenal.

    From Nam to Skull Island

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.

I've seen this movie four times, once in a theater and three times on Blu ray, and I am still not sure Kong as a metaphor for Vietnam works. But the film sure does! This is the best Kong since the original. Not overblown or pompous like the Peter Jackson version (and no Jack Black, a real plus), or cheap like the 1970s version, KONG SKULL ISLAND is a winner.

    No Spoilers Review

    |
    Posted .

I didn't go into this with any expectations, as I have been disappointed by the last several years of big budget Hollywood titles. I watched the movie based on a recommendation from a friend and was not disappointed. This was a surprisingly good remake of a story that has been told countless times. There's a new twist to this story with the introduction of a post-Vietnam War setting mixed in with tones of the 1930's adventure and science fiction. John Goodman and Samuel Jackson play major roles in the storyline, but it's nice to see them supporting a new age of younger talent.

    Don't let 3D end

The movie is one thing (great!) but the 3D image is one of the most vivid I have seen. Non action scenes even carry depth. Even if it has to be packaged in a 4 disc set with 4K here is hoping 3D still has legs
