    Large Capacity Great price

    Posted .

I had been searching around for months waiting for a good deal on a large capacity drive. I looked at hundreds of reviews for just about every company that makes drives. LaCie was one of the companies that had the least negative feedback, and was the most reasonably priced. LaCie's products have been good to me in the past (I owned a couple of optical drives by them, both internal and external), so I was happy to see a brand name I could put my trust in. It was well worth it. I am using it with my iMac, and I used the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format in disk utility (I named the drive 'Deep Thought' ^^). Disk utility shows the capacity as: 2,000,398,934,016 Bytes. I had no use for any of the software that came with it, because I was able to simply use disk utility for formatting, and time machine for back ups. I also added all the necessary PS3 folders, and I am able to play HD movies from it through my wireless network. However, I am not using the drive to its fullest potential. I do not have USB 3.0, but I figured that I will upgrade eventually and be able to use that functionality later (better to have it now, and be able to use it later, than to not have it at all, right?). For now I can tell you that USB 2.0 works just fine. The drive is silent, and it boots up quickly. It is warm to touch, but I don't have an issue with that; however, I could see that as a possible issue if you didn't put it in a well ventilated place (I am sure that is true for all drives). It matches my set up in design and color, and the subtle blue light is just enough for me to know when it is on/off, and when it is working i.e. blinking, but is not annoying at all. If I could change anything about the drive it would only be the placement of the on/off button. It is on the back (considering the USB receptacles as the back), and I wish it was on the front; however, I found that it fits perfectly sideways under my iMac screen, which locates the on/off button right up front. Problem solved. I paid $108, and I was alarmed that at the time Best Buy was the cheapest. It was great to be able to opt for 'pick up' and have it the next morning after I purchased it. In my experience they are normally the most expensive when compared to other online vendors. Anyway, as you can tell I am completely pleased with this purchase thus far. From all the reviews I read about other drives, I believe that the real test will be in about a year. That is when other drives were reported as crashing. Only time will tell that, but for now this is one of the best computer hardware purchases I have ever made.

    Good ... but ...

    Posted .

I have given this hard drive a five-star rating, because I believe it deserves it, but I need to throw in a caveat. However, I want to make sure that you understand that I am not complaining. When I bought my first LaCie Minimus 2 TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive, I liked it so much that I bought two more. One of the other ones worked fine. The third, however, had bad blocks and so needed to be returned. After contacting customer support, I boxed up the hard drive and sent to to Oregon for repair. By the time I had sent it and gotten it back, two weeks had gone by. This was not a problem, as I had, luckily, been able to place the data that was on the hard drive onto the other two hard drives, though I had to modify my backup routine for those two weeks. The cost of the return was about $20 in postage via UPS. I have to give five stars to customer support. The two people that I worked with, Clint and Felix, were both very helpful and courteous. My only question (and this is for all vendors) is why are products not checked before they are sent out to be sold? In other words, why was a hard drive put out to be sold before it was checked for bad blocks? I know this would take the vendor extra time, but it sure would be nice for the customers. The other item that I have noticed is that the new replaced external hard drive's casing feels hotter to the touch than the other two. After speaking with customer support about this, I was assured that this was not a problem. Their technical explanation of the reason for it made sense to me, but is too involved to explain here. BUT ... I want to make sure that the readers of this review understand that I am thoroughly pleased with the hard drives. Installation was extremely easy. I have used two other brands in the past. One was totally awful, which technical support that pretty much didn't exist. Those two drives didn't last a year. The other drives that I've used, of which I have had five, have worked fairly well as 1TB, but the 2 TB versions are awful and are not stable. As with the other hard drives that did not last, the technical support is rather non-existent. LaCie is clearly the winner in terms of technical support. At some point, I will replace the other external hard drives with LaCie, and so I will have a total of six LaCie.

One of The Best Drives Made!

    Posted .

LaCie has been and continues to be one of the best drives made! They're (almost always) a little more expensive than the other drives but that's because of the quality of the drive itself. The (ONLY) two external drives I'll personally use and also attach to my husband's computer, are LaCie and Seagate! The LaCie drives are quiet and keep working and working and working! I've honestly never had one "die" on me. When I've needed a new one it's only been because I needed more space. So I passed on the old LaCie to one of my sons and bought a larger LaCie for myself! Reliability, dependability and quality - that's what you get with a LaCie drive. I can most highly recommend it and have many times!

Lacie HDD Always Good Value & Quality

    Posted .

Over the course of several years, I have owned various Lacie HDD from the NAS, the Exernal and Internal HDD and portable drives. I have never had one fail. They are wisper quiet and cased in designes that are far superior to the designs of WD and Seagate. I have Lacie drives that are going strong after 5 years of use. In my opinion, the best brand units sold @ Best Buy are Lacie.

I have been using for 1 month now with no issues.

It is quite. Quick to respond. Holds a tremendous amount of data. Was a great price at $99. Has USB 3.0 capability, but I only have and am using 2.0. I had a Seagate 500GB before this that died after 2 years of use. Hopefully this one will last longer - great to not run out of space so soon. Cables plug into the front where the light is which is nice as the cable is longer that way with no kinking. It's as warm to the touch as the Seagate was. Has no fan which could be good or bad (good for sound, bad if gets too hot. The box says it uses aluminum casing to reduce heat and that no fan is needed - which the Seagate was the same).

    Great Product

    Posted .

I've only had this product for about 2 months. I purchased it because of the great reviews and the fact that everything else had horrible reviews. I was worried about losing everything (photos, documents, music). So far, this is exactly what I have been looking for. The construction is very solid and durable. It is sharp looking also. I wanted an external hard drive that would last me for a long time and this seems to be it. I read a lot of consumer reviews and have heard only great things about Lacie external hard drives. This is definitely worth the money. I wouldn't go cheap with your data storage! Great Product!

    Great for everything

    Posted .

This external hard drive is great! it is 2TB which holds alot of file, music, and anything you need. i have all those things and this holds them like no problem. With USB 3.0 it is super fast if you have a port. This still works with 2.0 and goes fast anyways. With its aluminum design it makes this hard drive less likely to get scratched or even hot. For a price of 149.99 it works great!

So simple and easy to use!

    Posted .

I just bought this external hard drive and already love it. You hook it up, plug it in, and load the software which occurred automatically on my Vaio. It was ready to go in 2 minutes. Ease of transferring storage from my old device to the Lacie was easy, fast, and quiet. My old external was so loud. You'll keep looking at the light and monitor to make sure the Lacie is on. Thank you Lacie and the computer geeks that recommended this brand.

    Excellent desktop

    Posted .

I've been using this drive for some time now and wanted to share my impressions. Pros: Compact (just slightly larger than standard portable drives). Brushed aluminum casing prevents from overheating and eliminates the need for a fan, which makes the drive very quiet. The drive has rubber feet that don't slide on the desk. I like the On/Off switch and little blue LED. The design is great. the drive works fast and without any hiccups. Cons: External power supply is needed. To summarize: This is one of the smallest desktop hard drives I've seen and it comes at a reasonable price. The drive has completely lived up to my expectations.

    Excellent Product

I am not a genius on computers so for me this products was great. It installed very easily on a Windows Vista system. It comes with the USB cable and power supply and the instructions are pretty straight forward. Note however that on a Windows Vista system, after it formats itself on the start up, you will end up with just a little more than 1.5 TB of storage room. Not a big deal for me, but if you were expecting the full 2 TB, you will be disappointed.

Bought a western digital hard drive initially and it didn't work, returned it for this one. Plugged it into the computer with windows 7 and followed the directions and set up was simple. From now on will only by Lacie hard drives. The drive is small and silent.

    Excellent HDD

I purchased Minimus specifically for increasing free space on my laptop. Despite its impressive capacity, the drive is very compact. USB 3.0 interface works well with my new laptop, the files copy almost instantly. High quality and excellent design! The drive comes with 10 GB of free storage space on wuala.

Everything is great except for noise

    Posted .

I don't know if anyone elses Lacie makes this noise, but as soon as I turn it on it makes an annoying beeping sound. It only stops when I turn it off. Maybe something's wrong with it, I don't know. It still worked to get about 20 gigs of music on it though.

Good hard drive - but LaCie software does not work

    Posted .

LaCie always makes super drives - but their software backup programs, even their expensive pro versions, still are not compatible with Win 7 64. LaCie was not able to tell me when they would have compatible software.

Small and compact. 3.0 or 2.0, also will work with the Mac. I have one on a PC and one on an I-Mac. You can also turn it off if not in use. It also does not stand up where it can fall over. Easy to use.

Using this EXHD as a data back up for all home computers. Working very well for this. BBGeek Squad set it up for me and transferred data from on Harddrive for me. I have now transferred all home PC data over to LaCie with no issues. Great device for home backup process.

    Poor craftsmanship and support

    Posted .

I had this unit less than two months and the USB plug pulled out of the board when I unplugged it after only a few uses. I have over 1.5tb of data and was told it would all be lost or they could recover it for $350. Poor craftsmanship and poor warranty coverage.
