Would not recommend this product or company

This device is poorly engineered using a very unique USB 3.0 connector. As others have stated the cord will not stay securely into the drive and eventually not work at all. Contacted LaCie customer support and they provided a new cable, after inserting it several times the problem was the same. What is most important is that while this is a known problem LaCie will only offer you to replace the drive at a cost of $50.00. Not what I would consider good customer support. My company for over a decade has always considered LaCie as the first choice of drives; hopefully they will change their policy and recall these drives with a replacement drive. After market fix: if you own one of these drives, tie a rubber band around the USB cord and double cross it over to the front of the drive.

Looks like a great hard drive...........

I purchased the Lacie Rikiki 1tb Hard Drive for $94.99 on sale at my local Best Buy, and thought I had found the proverbial pot of gold, at the end of the rainbow. I mean these things were like $120.00, aluminum cased, sleek, and sexy. The Lacie Rikiki is by far the best looking portable hard drive on the market. I anxiously took my newly acquired 3.0 USB drive home and unpacked it. Nothing special about the packing, but it did come with 10gb of free online storage through Wuala, which was a cool little perk. The drive was immediately up and running, and it was fast, compared to USB 2.0. The construction of the drive itself was great, solid ,smooth, and strong. But one thing concerned me from the beginning and would end up being the demise of our relationship. The micro-USB 3.0 female end in the drive itself was a very loose fit to the included cable. Initially there were no problems, but with this being a portable unit, and the cable being plugged and unplugged, over and over there rapidly became more play in the jack, and the glitching began. Once the glitching began it was a nightmare of trying to position the drive just right. This was the end, and I returned it to Best Buy. I did not purchase another. I could not rationalize how a $120.00 portable drive could have been so poorly designed, at such a simple spot, somewhere that a designer would figure repetitive use would create problems. I did in fact purchase a Seagate, FreeAgent, which I will be reviewing soon, but I will let you know if you are reading this that you should go with my latter decision with no worries.

    It's beautiful but not perfect.

Most beautiful designed, and great space! It's really great but the USB. Have to place the hard drive at a stable place when it pluged into my laptop. Performance is ok, I have USB2.0 so I understand it can take a while to load few G of stuff. but when I used 3.0, it's not really 5G/s but little faster then 2.0. If they got the USB problem fixed, it will just be the most perfect and the greatest hard drive ever!

Great Product at a good price

After having a number if Seagate drives fail on me, I decided to try this Lacie drive since one of my oldest external drives is also a Lacie. I recently purchased a laptop with a USB 3.0 port and felt that I'd like to take advantage of the additional speed. So far, I have purchased three of these drives that operate as my constant backup for all of my current photography work. I carry them (one at a time) attached to the lid of my laptop with velcro and have never had an issue.

    DO NOT BUY / BEWARE!!!

First of all, I'm a photographer which means I have thousands of photos to back up on a daily basis. The product has a great look to it and it's also USB 3.0 which was a great selling point for me because it's all about speed. I've had it for about 2 weeks right now and when I tried to plug in the USB cable to the harddrive, the connector went all the way in. Which means?! Yup, I lost all my files and cannot access them anymore. So, that doesn't mean you won't have better luck than me! So go ahead and try it for yourself!!!

I'm impressed with style and performance

With a beautiful and compact outer case, this drive works as promised. I considered that the competitors had that same amount of space, in a larger case and cost a little more too, the LaCie won me over. The USB3 works really fast during transfers and performance with USB2 is still good. Full sized backup drives are gigantic compared to this one. That is something you can appreciate if you are mobile. In addition to USB3, I wish it had a firewire or Esata connection

    Great storage for the price

Initial formatting of the drive was a no-brainer with the included setup software. Speed of the drive is great and does not heat up easily. Very attractive Lacie style.
