    Mistake and pay

Do not buy this item unless you expect to run it powered and pay. Bought a lacie USB3.0 express card adaptor for my DellXPS720 with Win7 64-bit to go with this 500gb Rugged Triple (plenty of bus power to express card slot). I will need to transfer big files from this x-drive to my PC. Card fit nicely in the express card slot but once I loaded the drivers and plugged in the rugged triple the drive wouldn't stay mounted..kept clicking off and on, no matter how many times I checked the card install and driver configuration for the Rugged Triple. Worked fine on USB2.0. But hey, I just bought a LaCie USB3.0 express card. LaCie support's fix.. for $25-30 I would need to buy (and this is a quote)"an extra thing that we call a "Y" cord to run your USB3.0 off a USB2.0 slot". The Rugged Triple does not include an external power cord. Even if I wanted the cord tech support said it was out of stock but I could put it on my wish list. Ah, perfect. From my perspective, the company should either include the "Y" cord with the product or advise customers they might need to buy the cord seperately. They also might advise customers because of need for USB2.0 power to run it, the Rugged Triple really isn't very portable. End of story.

After all the years that the Rugged has been on the market, you would think that the price would have gone down some, particularly when you're talking about a hard drive with only 500GB of space. That's not much space these days. Still, it's the only USB drive I will buy if shipping of the drive is an only option. I work with digital media, and it has become the norm to ship drives back and forth to clients. While I'm very careful to pack with care, the drives often come back to me in bare minimum protective packaging. Any drive I have may be shipped 12 times a year across the country. Not one Rugged hard drive has ever lost media or had any malfunctions. I can't say the same for the other three portable drives (not Ruggeds) that have crashed on me within a year of purchase, and this involved NO shipping or even an accidental drop. Gee, maybe I shouldn't complain about the Rugged price tag after all...

    It died young...

About 6 months ago I was looking for a second portable drive as my other one (different brand) was getting full and, although it has never had a problem, it's about 2 years old now. So I bought the LaCie. The orange rubbery casing looks cool and the drive feels rugged. Unfortunately, one day last week I plugged it in and Windows wanted to "repair" it. It worked for a couple of sessions after that, then lost all data and formatting. Disappointing, especially for the price. When it was working, it worked well, but 6 months or less seems like a short lifetime.

I teach photography classes at a college in Fl and use this drive so my students can place their digital assignments in a folder to hand in. It is portable and can easily be passed around the class. It is armored with a rubber jacket so it gives it additional protection. It is also bus powered so it does not need an additional cable. It has been a very reliable drive and you can change the rubber jacket to a different color as an accessory from LaCie. The color change comes in handy when several different drives are used for different purposes, it makes them easy to see from a distance.

I'd owned the older rugged 500GB which required you also use USB for power for about 4 years. When I ran into laptop problems I ran to my Old Rugged at an Apple Store to backup as I waited for a repair. I didn't have the USB connector so I couldn't backup. While waiting I looked at the newer drives, but my issue was my laptop doesn't have USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt. I noticed this revamped Rugged 500BG drive which used firewire for faster transfer rates and no need for a power source.

Combined with my MacBook Pro these drives are a great piece of equipment for on location photography and videography events. I can plug one in via Firewire and the other via USB to back up all of my files on multiple devices. Small enough for travel yet big enough for the storage I need. I couldn't recommend these drives any more. If purchasing multiples buy the LaCie Rugged Sleeves to keep drives organized. They can be found on the LaCie website.

    Don't believe the durability hype!

I bought this drive for its alleged durability in November 2012. I used it with a desktop Mac and MacBook Pro. While using it with my laptop I would sometimes move my laptop -- big mistake. This may be a tough drive (i wont ever find out) but don't ever move it when it's spinning. Mine died last month, but I don't want to return it because I am going to try to retrieve the data from it. Also, the USB 3.0 port connection is very fragile. I'm extremely disappointed.

I don't own a Mac, but needed to purchase an external hard drive for a project in a studio. The studio's Mac did not have USB 3.0, so I needed a FireWire drive, but I don't own any PCs with FireWire. This hard drive is compatible with both Mac and PC, and has both USB and FireWire, so I'm able to continue using this drive for other purposes after we're done with it at the studio. It performs well and was very easy to just hook up and use.

I bought a couple of these for field work. They hold up well (although I wouldn't test the 3.9 foot drop claim, they have stood up to being knocked around) and are reasonably fast. Some people have had problems with LaCie, I've always had good luck with their products. YMMV, I guess. The variety of ports is nice when you have a mix of old and new equipment.

It runs fast with the firewire 800. Which i needed bc i dont have a usb 3 computer at the moment and a tiny system drive. I can run pretty hefty games off it for now and store whatever else for the moment. I have a share partition for mac/windows use and a partition for purely running large programs i lack space for on the mac. It does what it says. Which is all i needed.

I bought this because my Mac's operating system was outdated and I needed to backup my data before upgrading. This was the only external drive I could find that was compatible with my old operating system. I found that it was easy to setup and use. I like the protective case, but wish the price for the unit wasn't so high. Overall I am pleased with my purchase.

For the price this drive is worth if you have a specific platform in mind. I needed a simple, versatile drive for both mac and pc users. Next time I would opt to pay the $10 for the Seagate Slim drive. The Seagate interface is "plug and play" unlike the Lacie. The Seagate Slim dive is also very compact. It is without Firewire, though, if you need it.

It's a good product, but there are other products on the market, esp for PC's that are cheaper with higher memory for cheaper. I bought this product because it was the only one the met the needs for a MAC computer, which is what I was using for a school product. I do like that it is durable for taking back and forth to school.

I use this portable drive to shuttle media between acquisition devices in the field to an edit workstation. The drive is rugged, dependable and easy to use. I partition to the drive to work on both PC and MAC platforms, and trust this drive to perform all media transfer operations flawlessly.

I have a few LaCie "rugged" drives. Never let me down, though I haven't drop any. Sending to someone in field to return files so wanted something a little tough. LaCie do make other color sleeves if orange is not your thing. Orange color does make it stand out.

This is a great product. It is my 3rd Lacie external drive. I bought it because I know Lacie products are reliable, work well and an investment. The drive is tough and can handle all the traveling it must do in my world. Instructions are easy to follow.

This was my first purchase of an external hard drive. The LaCie Rugged Triple GB500 External hard drive was easy to use and I really like the sturdy case. I bought it to store thousands of pictures that were on my MacBook Pro.

I have several of these and they are almost as quick as the SSD devices with USB 3.0. I have dropped and it continues to purr. It is a staple in my business. You cannot go wrong with this hard drive especially when you can pick it up on sale from Best Buy.

LaCie drives are my go-to for video editing storage and work. Never had one go wrong. The bumpers on the side of this model are nice, but probably would try really hard not to drop it anyway. Good for minor bumps and tumbling around in your backpack.
