I first fell in love with Hippo Campus when I heard Suicide Saturday off the first EP Bashful Creatures. Bashful Creatures sounded a lot like Vampire Weekend… a lot like Vampire Weekend. The South EP felt and sounded like a band that had matured, toured, and that wanted to distance themselves from that comparison, but unlike the smooth sheen of the first EP, South sounded harsh at times. But Landmark is a fully developed mix between the two. They have moved past the VW comparison and really developed a sound that really is unlike anything currently playing. The songs are strong, the lyrics and melodies are memorable, and the mix of the album is smooth. This album is dense at times with lots of dynamics, and yet light and playful. This album is so good and makes me excited for the next one.
