3D in this movie is lame!!!

I'd first like to say that I enjoyed this movie's story regardless of the 3D Blu-ray. I wish that I would have listened to the reviewer before me:( The ONLY thing 3D about this movie is the AWESOME Paramount 3D intro that literally pops out of the screen. It is truly amazing. During the film the only 3D that they implemented was depth during close ups. The magic elements were all done in 2D. Lame. There are no exrtas on this disc. If I choose to watch this 3D Blu-ray again in my home I'd watch it in 2D. What is so messed up is that my 240Hz 3D LED TV does a better job upconverting this film from 2D to 3D than this movies native 3D.

3D - Not the best, but far from the worst.

I hate to admit that I've not finished watching this movie, yet here I am posting a review. I have newborn twin boys who see to it that I can't watch a movie start to finish in one session, so I cannot review the movie's plot or content beyond stating that so far it isn't as bad as I had expected from all of the bad reviews. But reviewing the plot is not why I'm here; I'm here to talk about the 3D quality of this movie. With so many people bashing it, I had to see the 3D for myself and respond with my observations. I almost decided against purchasing this movie because of the negative reviews on bestbuy.com in which the authors seem like they were personally offended by the 3D quality. I took a chance on this movie anyway because, frankly, I wanted a live-action 3D movie I could share with friends over a 6-pack. Can't really do that with all the IMAX and children's films that until recently were about all you could find in 3D. I'm relieved to say that while this movie wouldn't be my first choice to use as demo material to show off what a 3D TV can do, the 3D isn't half bad and does help draw you into the movie. Perhaps I'm just a cheap date, but there is plenty of depth (even in the magic effects, at least to my eyes) with minimal ghosting. Reviewers on this site claim that the 3D is bad because the movie wasn't shot in 3D, and that the software 2D-to-3D conversion feature on most 3DTVs does better than the film's native 3D effects. One even goes so far as to claim that this film's 3D is nothing more than a TV's 2D to 3D algorithm captured to Blu-ray. Valid points in theory, but a few counterpoints in practice: 1.) Shyamalan contracted Stereo D LLC to do the 2D to 3D conversion for between $5-10 million. Stereo D LLC is a big name in 3D that did conversion work for a little movie called Avatar as well. If all they do is what our 3DTVs do, then I'm going to quit my day job and put my television to work for Hollywood at the discount rate of $1 million per movie conversion! 2.) Not all 3D movies are filmed in 3D. Granted, 2D to 3D conversions are not all created equal. Even at their best they will not be as perfect as native 3D, but there have been other movies shot in 2D and converted that looked just fine. Take for instance Alice in Wonderland. If you are looking for the ultimate 3D showcase, then there are better options than this movie. If you're a huge fan of The Last Airbender and want all of the bonus materials, then get the collector's edition. If you're looking for a 3D movie that isn't a documentary or animated children's movie, then you might just be happy with this purchase given the lack of alternatives currently on the market.

    Buy the regular Blu-Ray

Good movie, poor 3D effects. Like so many others, I wish I had known better than buy the 3D version. It's a good movie, and my grandkids liked it, but no one was impressed with the visual effects. One kept taking his 3D glasses off. But like many of you, I have a 3D TV and want SOMETHING besides animations and documentaries (although the Deep Sea 3D is really good if you like NatGeo fare). All we can do is keep waiting I guess.

    Don't buy the 3d bluray!!!!!

The only reason this movie gets a 1star rating from me is because of the 3d bluray! DONT BUY THE 3D BLURAY!!! Save your money and just buy the regular bluray!!! I bought the 3d version and had forgotten that this movie was NOT filmed in 3d..so all they did was what your 3d tvs do when they convert 2d to 3d.. which as everyone knows isnt that great! I really wish I could get my money back and just buy the regular version.. it's a pretty good movie but do NOT waste your money with the 3d version.. it's not EVEN comparable to Monsters vs Aliens, Cloudy with a chance.., My Bloody Valentine.. the 3d in this movie SUCKS... i do look forward to a sequel because there is sooo much potential for GREAT 3d from the cinematography.. you've been warned! haha

    I enjoyed the 3D effect

I've been watching TV since the B&W days. Same arguments were around when B&W TV transitioned to color. My opinion, some 3D is better than no 3D at all. How else will it improve. Most may not remember transition pencils, then calculators(manual then electronic), then computers, then PCs. I enjoyed the 3D effect. Could it have been better, probably. But, I enjoyed it the same watching it on my 58" Plasma 3D television. Would I purchase it again, yes.

    Non animated 3D test movie

I purchased this movie to see 3D other than an animated film. Actually I thought the story line wasn't that great and the acting was pretty so-so also. However, this isn't why I bought it. I thought the 3D was actually better than Avatar in the movie theatre with the colored glasses. Nothing like Shrek in 3D, but not bad. I would expect as 3D matures it will get even better.

My 2nd favorite movie of the year.

This was definitely my second favorite movie of the year. I was very excited that Best Buy had a 3D edition. The movie is great, the 3D looks great although it's not used very much. My only complaint is that there are NO extras on this disc! I would recommend going without the 3D edition for this movie.

I like the story line and enjoyed it very much. The 3D affects were very poor. A movie like this could produce some very real cool 3D affects. Hope they do better next time.... Buy the Blu Ray movie not the 3D version.

I agree with some of the others when they said the 3D was trouble. No "popouts".

Not much to expect from a movie like this. But I hate 3D movies that where not shoot in 3D and later converted.

    What 3D?

Only bought this movie because it was supposed to be 3D. The printed graphics in movie were the only 3D I saw and not really that much depth to them. Definitely not worth the extra money for 3D. With the magic (special effects) and storyline of this movie 3D done correctly would/could have been awesome.

    Excellent movie, lousy 3D

The movie itself is great, can't wait for the sequels to it. The 3D, however, leaves a lot to be desired. You could watch the 3D version and the 2D version side by side and see no difference at all. Very disappointed with that aspect. Enjoy the movie, but just buy the regular Bluray or DVD, don't waste the money on the 3D version.

We just bought a 3D player and have been scrambling to find some movies to buy. The quality of the 3D in this movie is not good at all. The plot was not that great either. As compared to the 3D Disney movies this one is awful!

I was so excited to see this movie and purchased 5 tickets for me and my family/friends. I watched this movie in theaters and we all walked out within the first 15 to 25mins. Well, all that money went down the drain. It was the worst acting and 3D experience I ever watched. As for the story overall? I'm not sure. Like I said, I didn't finish watching the movie. I do not recommend making this purchase at all.

The story is good but the 3D is excellent. I love the depth of the picture. This is why I am glad I up graded to the 3D system. So far all the movies have used the 3D to give the viewer an outstanding visual.

In my opinion this movie was great. Awesome effects and in 3D, that simply took it to another level in the movie experience. It looks great with my other 3d, bluray, and horror movie collection.
