One of the best films of the 90s
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie has the best use of music of any modern movie that I've seen. It's really impressive from the start to the finish. The whole film, which is intelligently written and passionately acted, in the end comes off as a mood piece, and not just the heroic adventure you'd expect. Acting, music, cinematography, all combine to make you feel you are there. If there's a downside, it's that I wish that the young couple in the film had their characters fleshed out more. They could have used more screentime. This movie holds up well. I saw it for the first time in years again a few weeks ago and still loved it.

good
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The fourth & best film adaptation of James Fenimore Coopers's book, Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) must, with his Mochican father & brother (Russell Means & Eric Schweig), protect a colonel's 2 daughters (Madeline Stowe & Jodhi May) in the middle of the French & Indian War. The setting is in New York, but the film was actually made in (beautiful) North Carolina. The deviations from the book (most notably Hawkeye, who is a far more romantic character in this film) shouldn't keep people who enjoy love and adventure in movies from enjoying it.

Brilliant

One of Few Director's Cuts That's Better
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This director's version of 'The Last of The Mohicans' is actually one of few director's versions that is actually better than the original theatrical release. Presented here in its original 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen ratio, the sometimes washed out image seems as though it could have been better.

Only the Original is Worth Buying
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Last of the Mohicans is my all-time favorite movie--that is in the original format. The DVD sold in the US is the Director's Cut and leaves me with disgust and outrage. The war at the fort is now way too long and my most favorite moments have now been deleted and replaced with counterfeit moments. The music does not even seem to flow the same way. I went to Wal-Mart the other day and found a DVD just entitled The Last of the Mohicans, but don't be fooled. Notice carefully that whoever packaged it is obviously feeling the heat of those like me that feel the same way. They carefully place a paper over the what is truly the original. It is the worse-than-awful Director's Cut. If you want the best edition, buy the VHS version if you can find it or the version from Great Britain which is owned by Warner Brothers not Fox. Even with the lesser quality of the VHS over a DVD, you still will walk away with a far better deal.

Missing Scenes
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Last of the Mohicans was an interesting adaption of the James Fenimore Cooper classic. The problem with the verson on this disk is that it's missing scenes that were included on the VHS version. I'm not entirely sure why. They made the story more complete. I would hold off. Perhaps the Bluray version will pull it all back together with a completed movie and hi-def picture (this movie would look amazing in HD).

Beautiful film marred by murky picture quality
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.**This review is specifically for the current (2010) Blu-ray edition, not the film itself or other formats/versions.** I've seen this film at least a dozen times, including its original theatrical run and I consider it one of director Michael Mann's best. I finally found this title at Best Buy for cheap, and now I know why. This is probably the worst transfer I've ever seen on Blu-ray in terms of overall clarity and brightness. It's simply far too dark, making it nearly impossible to discern what's going on at times (particularly during nighttime and indoor scenes). I understand the film—as with much of Mann's work—was originally shot in low or natural light conditions, but this is certainly not the way I remember it being presented in theaters. On the audio front, this film is still has some standout sequences (the cannon volleys during the siege at Fort William Henry are absolutely ground-shaking), but long-existing source issues (listen to the all-too-obvious sound design work whenever water is present in the background) have never been fully resolved. Trevor Jones's orchestral work soars throughout the film (yes, even unnecessarily so at times), and lends the proper urgency to the foot chase sequence at the end of the film. Overall, I'm disappointed with how this Blu-ray looks. That's only one part of the equation, but it's a crucial one for me. Others may have different setups, and therefore different opinions, but all things being relative, this is hands down one of the worst Blu-rays in my collection. I can't recommend picking it up if you've never seen the film, and certainly not if you're a longtime fan.

no Dances with Wolves
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie isn't the best thing on film nor is it close. Some good parts but not enough to mention nor to watch again to see. Leave this one alone.
