For the first time, your family’s livelihood is threatened. At the same time, you’re trying to get out from under the shadow of your elders, one of whom is a local legend. Which takes priority? The Bondurant brothers are the owners and operators of the premier bootlegging operation in Franklin County, Virginia. Jack, the youngest (portrayed by Shia LaBouef) is assisting Howard (played by Jason Clarke) and Forrest (played by Tom Hardy) when he witnesses a shooting. The gunman, Floyd Banner (played by Gary Oldman), locks eyes with young Jack before he departs for the operation’s headquarters. Once there, Forrest (Hardy) hires a new waitress. Her name is Maggie Beauford (played by Jessica Chastain) and she is a former dancer who’s recently moved to Franklin County from Chicago. Shortly after that, the bootlegging business is confronted with an obstacle. Charlie Rakes, another new arrival and a Special Deputy. Rakes (played by Guy Pearce) tells Forrest that, from now on, he and his superiors will be given a percentage of the profits form their business. Forrest, as expected, sends Rakes away and threatens to kill him if he returns. After his departure, Forrest organizes a meeting of his colleagues in the illegal alcohol business. His hope is to rally them into a resistance movement. “Bootleggers of the world unite” if you will. While they are receptive, initially, it’s only a matter of time before they capitulate to Deputy Rakes. In the meantime, Jack has become enamored with Bertha Minnix. Bertha (played by Mia Wasikowska) is the daughter of a local German Baptist preacher who forbids Bertha from seeing Jack once he attends one of his services drunk and leaves abruptly. This film is supposedly based on a historical novel written by the grandson of LaBouef’s character. I don’t know how faithful the film is to the novel or how historically accurate the novel is, but as far as I’m concerned, the movie failed. It isn’t particularly awful, but it’s not all that interesting either. I am surprised that former Disney star Shia LaBouef has actual talent, but he does and we’ve seen it. I am not at all surprised by the fact that Tom Hardy is talented as he has demonstrated it on numerous occasions. Maybe Lawless would be more engrossing if its release had predated the HBO series about Prohibition era bootlegging, Boardwalk Empire. Maybe not. All I can say is that I was underwhelmed. Maybe you won’t be.

LAWLESS is cinema magic. Take a time old tale, add two of Hollywood's biggest actor's, add prohibition and you have a time old classic!! I use this movie as a perfect example of how much screen presence that Tom Hardy has, for those viewers who wouldn't have seen him in Warrior or Bronson or his amazing performance this year in Locke. Shia LaBeouf is a Hollywood question mark of drastic proportion, but within this film he does shine, like the Hollywood star he has been billed as. Guy Pierce makes his creepy villain presence felt to round out the movie...and side character acting by Dane DeHaan, and Jessica Chastain complete the Cast. I fully reccomend this movie to anyone who loves period pieces like Shawshank or the Green Mile.

This is a great movie and very accurately portrays the story of the Bondurant brothers. It has action scenes and scenes that will keep you wondering what will happen next. Coming from a girl that has been in Franklin County her whole life, you have to come from an area such as this to understand and appreciate the life, trials, and tribulations of the characters. Events such as this and those similar to this really did take place in the history of this county and I find it amazing that there is finally a movie based on it. Having read the book that this movie is based on, I can say that in my opinion, it closely relates to the novel. Give both the book and the movie a shot before you try and degrade one or both!

This movie is about the prohibition era but takes place in the back hills with moonshiners. The big muscle gangsters from the city want a piece of the action and start threatening the locals. This starts a clash between a tough famiy in the hills and the well armed city thugs. There are likable characters in the film. The acting is very very good and the plot has characters that you love to hate. It's supposedly based on a real life family. If you like gangster flicks, you'll love this one. There are no boring spots.

This movie has great actors and acting, with a plot that is simple yet bold. You always stick up for family. And yes, sometimes they may let you down, but they always come thru for you in the end. It also hits on the point of standing up for your convictions. Even though what they were doing was illegal, they weren't going to back down for anyone. All of the brothers were great, but I feel that Tom Hardy's character was my favorite. He was a man of few words, and he let his actions speak for themselves.

This movie is very well done and has a star-studded cast. Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy are fantastic brothers and Guy Pearce is a menacing villian. This movie has a western feel to it and the plot is gripping and reels you in. The conclusion is fantastic and the story unfolds and escalates throughout. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys dark westerns or bootlegging or gang style movies. This movie has a heavy feel at times and can be a little disturbing. Not for children.

A good story based on the history of an actual mountain family. The situation face by people in old America, seems far different than from today. In those days life was difficult and many times one could not trust the system. Thus the law was in the hands of ordinary folks. This however, did not always insure justice would be done. This film displays this fact very well. The film moved along fairly well. The DVD extras are worth watching.

Shia Labeouf gets a lot of bad rap, like some other of my favorite actors(Nick Cage). But I feel a movie shouldn't be judged only by the actor, and this is one of those, it's set in an awesome time, with guns cars and mobs. It's slow at times but has a good story and a lot of good gun fights. I was lucky enough to get this in a nice steelbook, I think it's still in some store so see if you can find it, its 11.99 and worth it.

This movie pertained all of my favorite actors. The three brothers in the film were running a corrupt operation in which they acted like they were above the law. When the youngest gets a feel of what it's like to do dealings with a deadly gangster, everything starts to spiral down hill! It's a great outlaw movie packed with gangster dealings that are based in a true story. It's a must see!

Although much of the film is far fetched and merely inspired by real life bootleggers during the Depression, it's still far better and more realistic than the blockbuster pyrotechnic type films that dominate modern cinema. Although the film has its over the top moments of graphic violence, it can still be enjoyed by those merely looking for a movie that tells an interesting story.

I absolutely loved this movie. The acting was absolutely great by Tom Hardy, Shia, and Guy Pierce. This is a very violent movie that was done tastefully unlike most hollywood garbage now days and also managed to get plenty of laughs. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone.

I did purchase this movie without any knowledge or details about it. II started viewing the movie and I was glued to the television set. I didn't realize that it had plenty of stars in it. There was plenty of action and adventure in it. I would definitely recommend this movie to others. It also made me laugh at times and look at the enforcement officers differently.

Our purchasing experience and delivery went well. It exceeded our expectations, delivery was on time and the delivery crew/installers were polite and friendly. They were true professionals and were very helpful with their hints on how to properly care for the appliances and how to handle the various features. We were grateful for that. Keep up the good work!

Tom Hardy is quiet but blunt and to the point with his role which is outstanding. I don't know why so many critics give Shia Lebeouf such a hard time. He gives a performance that is absolutely believable from that time period. Jessica Chastain is marvelous in this movie as well as she is stunning!

Lawless is a great movie. Not your typical western kind of movie. Lots of action, brotherhood, love scene. Its got the works. Not for kids though! Jessica Chastain does a terrific job along with Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce as the antagonist and protagonist. Give it a chance, highly recommended.

I loved Tom Hardy as Forrest in this movie. This true story of 3 brothers selling moonshine during prohibition had me hooked from the beginning. If you love period piece bio-pic movies I recommend giving this a try. There was just off enough shoot outs and just enough heart.

This is a great movie with some great acting. During prohibition there were many corrupt politicians and gangsters that took advantage of the situation and found a way to make money off of it. Family and family values of these backwoods people seams to be the theme of this movie.

Lawless was extremely well filmed, looked great and stayed true to year it was set in. The cast was strong and all delivered good performances, especially Tom Hardy, who once again showed how much of a versatile actor he is. Shia LaBeouf was also a stand out performer for me.

Despite my reservations about Shia LaBeouf, the acting in this movie all around was fantastic. The story line is great and really pulls you into the excitement -- and anxiety -- of the Prohibition era. If you hate violent/bloody movies, you should probably avoid this one.

Lawless is a gritty crime drama set in the Great Depression and based on a true story, no less. With lots of action and great acting by Hardy and LeBeouf, you'll want to see this one again and again. One of those films you'll be pulling for the "bad guys"!
