Best learning tablet on the market!!

We have had our Ultra for a few days now. We also had the LeapPad and the LeapPad 2. We decided we needed to upgrade for the bigger screen and wifi. There is so much we love about the Ultra! The screen is HUGE. The size of an ipad mini screen. The Ultra is built TOUGH. Its heavier than the LeapPad 2, but that is to be expected due to its large size. It comes with a built in battery, no need to purchase batteries or a battery pack on this device. The Ultra comes with a charger for at home, and a USB cable. You can also purchase a car charger for this device. My favorite upgraded features are the 7 inch screen, the kid safe LeapSearch which allows your child to surf content that Leapfrog has deemed safe. There are categories of video's and websites like NickJr.com, PBS kids, Barbie, ThinkQuest, Highlights Kids, Funology, NASA, and many more! I also love that there is an upgraded Pet Pad Party app which allows you to pick from a wide variety of pets, design them, design their home, play tick tack toe and all sorts of fun things! My daughter really enjoys that feature. For those who have 2 children who will have Ultras there are peer to peer features where your children can play against each other (or any other Ultra user in the same room). Games like Cart Racing and Roly Poly World, but you can select the learning level for each child so the questions will be geared for that child while they are playing on their device! Another great feature on the device is a APP CENTER APP, where you can purchase and download apps right from the device. You can only do this is parent mode of course, and you have to enter a code that you choose to purchase an app. I love that you can also purchase apps from the app center at Leapfrog.com, or from Leapfrog Connect on your computer and once the Ultra is turned on it will start downloading your purchases with no need to connect via USB. I really like the fact that the stylus is pushed into the side of the device, and that the volume buttons are at the top, and the power button is on the side. The only buttons on the front are the d-pad and home buttons. I have noticed that with the Ultra you can use the d-pad in games where you normally tilt the device to move objects or characters. I'm not sure if that was a possibility in the previous LeapPad devices? Its great to have the option. I highly recommend this device. Its perfect, safe, fun, big screen, wifi included, tough, will grow with your child, and Leapfrogs educational content can't be beat. We have tried Vtech products, and we own a Kindle Fire and Ipad, but my daughter still chooses her LeapPad to play with. I love that I don't have to worry about anything she is looking at or playing with, and I know that she is LEARNING from content designed by education professionals. I have never found the quality of content anywhere else, that LeapFrog offers. Ipad apps may be cheaper, or free, but the content is just not there. You get what you pay for with Leapfrog, they stand behind their products. I don't mind the cost to ensure that my child is learning as we use our device for educational entertainment. If you are looking at buying your child a learning tablet, this one simply can't be beat. We are thrilled with it. I'd suggest not waiting to long to purchase if you are thinking of this being a Christmas gift. Its sure to be a sell out!! Thank you for another great product Leapfrog!

    My nephew loves it

I bought the LeapPad Ultra from BestBuy the very first day it came out, for my nephew's fifth birthday. When I opened it I was surprised how heavy the tablet was and actually I was a little worried that it would be too weighty for the little guy. And as other reviewers have noted, it did take a little while to setup although not nearly as long as other people have found, maybe 15 minutes over so-so wifi in my case. Lastly, the app store...well, it's not an iPad, that's for sure. But enough with the concerns. Unsurprisingly my nephew took to the tablet immediately, as I knew he would since he loves anything electronic. But three months later my sister reports that he still uses it constantly--this morning she sent me a picture of him writing on it while eating breakfast. She also says she finds the games extremely relevant to what he's currently learning is school. In particular the art program apparently is very good. I don't live in the same city so I don't see my nephew regularly and thus I can't comment on the specifics of the tablet, but I think the evidence speaks for itself: it's been a big success.

I ordered the Leap Pad Ultra for my grandchildren. After I received the Leap Pads, my son asked that I make sure they worked well before I gave them to the kids, so I plugged them in, loaded the games and played each one as a guest. They worked well. I received offers for games at 30% off after I ordered the Leap Pads, so you might want to wait to buy games until after you get the Leap Pads. I also ordered the silicone covering separately to protect the Leap Pads, and they fit well. In addition I ordered the clear covering to protect the face of the Leap Pad, and installed it. The only minor problem was the air bubbles between the covering and the face of the Leap Pad. I use an Iphone and an Ipad every day, so this was not hard for me. I'm glad I familiarized myself with the games so that I can explain them to the 3 year old and the 5 year old, as this will be their first time out dealing with a Leap Pad. If the kids had been using an Ipad they would find this Leap Pad to move slower than an Ipad, but with nothing to compare it with there should be no problem. This isn't something to hand a child and walk away. Parental guidance and help in setting it up, charging it, and learning how to play the games initially is necessary.

I had researched this product for months and had read both positive and negative reviews on various websites. As a result of many of the reviews, I almost decided not to purchase the item. However, just two days prior to Christmas with BestBuy still offering free and guaranteed holiday delivery, I decided to take a chance. This item was a huge hit with my 4 year old daughter! It was easy to set up and we have had no difficulties operating the instrument. She calls it her "pink IPAD" and has enjoyed the 2 cartridges I purchased to go with it as well as the free download that was permitted upon set-up. After reading numerous reviews about the fact that the item does not allow the user to connect to the full web when Wi-Fi is enabled, I was unsure what to expect with what she was going to be able to access. However, she is thrilled with what is provided and it is very age appropriate, thereby limiting the time I must monitor the content. We have had no difficulties with the product being slow to operate or access available content when Wi-Fi is enabled. My daughter loves it! She can pull up numerous videos, songs, shows, and so forth which keep her entertained. Overall, a great purchase!

This is an interesting toy that requires parental guidance in setting it up, charging it, and initially explaining how to play the games to 3 and 5 year old children. I recommend that the parent or grandparent set the Leap Pad up and explore it, before letting the child know it is theirs because it takes a little time, even if you use an Iphone and Ipad every day like I do. Best to wait until after you buy the Leap Pad to buy the games because if you order it online you may receive email offers for 25-30% off subsequent orders of games. The Leap Pad Ultra is slower than an Ipad. I bought a silicone covering separately to hopefully protect the toy in case it gets dropped. I also ordered a case separately to protect the toy when it is stored. My son asked that I check the toy and make sure it worked before I gave it to my grandchildren, which I did. I played the games as a guest, and set the Leap Pad up with the child's name on the front of it.

Has big screen so my kids don't have a problem with selecting what they want with ease. My kids fight over it all the time 3 children ages 2-7. Downloaded apps range in price $10-30. The games my kids are interested in that is. Debated between this and an affordable real tablet. Down fall would be with the real tablet you could download common free apps such as angry birds, fruit ninja, etc. Although, we as parents like educational games for our children so it is probably a wash. Another down fall would be that sometimes my children become impatient with slow loading times or slow reaction time. They end up pushing something 5 or 6 times before the tablet catches up. For example they will tap to scroll the screen and it won't move right away so they keep tapping and then all of the sudden the screen is too far moved for what they were trying to select. We bought this at best buy for $150 and then it came with $30 Best Buy card so it was worth a try! Overall works well for our family and are satisfied; just wish it was alittle more like a real tablet with the app marketplace.

    Slow, Buggy and Not Educational

I bought the Leappad Ultra for my granddaughter who was not reading up to grade level. The price is high for this sort of device but because of the wifi and reviews, I thought it would be worth it. Also, it made it seem as though there would be many useful free apps. First, most of the apps were not really educational--especially for reading. To get reading apps, I had to spend a lot of money. When we did use it with wifi, it was incredibly slow by today's standards. Also, the wifi applications were very few without paying a lot of money. Then, after just three months, it quit taking a charge. I did some trouble-shooting with the help of the website and tried attaching it to see if there were patches or updates. Instead, it partially reconfigured the Leappad and then locked up and because completely unusable. My granddaughter did enjoy the games, but it was not worth it to get another one. I appreciate Best Buy's extended warranty that allowed me to get a full refund. I purchased an actual android tablet for just $10 more.

    Great Idea, Good learning tool

Originally bought Kindle for wife. My two year old tried to take it over. I didn't realize she knew how to operate a tablet. So I bought her a Leap Pad Ultra thinking this will keep her happy. Found out it only had 800mhz processor which is way antiquated in todays world.(my phone is a couple years old and has 1.2ghz processor) The idea behind this product is sound, but it is way to slow and the apps are $25.00 each for most of the main ones. After about 2 weeks the baby was tired of waiting on it all the time and kept stealing wifes Kindle. We returned Leap Pad Ultra and bought a Nabi. A bit more expensive but a lot better product for the money. Nabi had more free programs and operates much more efficiently. Daughter likes it much better.

It is good that it is more durable than most I have seen. It takes for ever to power up and is VERY slow to respond, this was a major issue. The $80 in games it comes with is terrible. They apparently consider a calculator as apart of that cost. So you can only download one game/interactive book. The interactive games/books are extremely expensive.$25 bucks each. Apps for an iPad that are similar are free or only a few dollars. The learning apps are very well done. Interactive and very geared towards learning. If it was faster with less expensive apps and games I would have kept it. My daughter was only two so she was on the young side but she can operate and iPad or Android device without issue so this should have been easier. Maybe for a slightly older child.

WiFi Capable but NO INTERNET BROWSING

I bought 2 of these for my God Father's children to avoid them going on their parents' cell phone. They love watching the Mother Goose club on You Tube and I assumed since the system has WiFi it would be great. NOT THE CASE! The system is prefixed with only allowing searching through Leap Search and content which is only "approved by LeapFrog’s team of learning experts". The kids are used to being on regular Tablets with internet browsing. Without this option the kids seem disappointed!! Although the art app and music has kept them busy, it does not keep their attention. Feel like I'm not getting the use for the purpose of my purchase. Disappointed!

Bought this for my 4 year old daughter as an upgrade to her original Leap Pad bought in 2012. First of all, I couldn't be happier about the internal rechargeable battery. We went through a large amount of AA's with the original because she used it so much. I can't comment on the full battery life because it is plugged in when she isn't using it. We have other tablets (Apple and Android) that she will use here and there, but her Leap pad Ultra is her "go to" device. She enjoys taking pictures and making videos along with the 10 or so games that we bought over the last few years, which is another plus; all the games she had work with the new tablet with no issues. Overall this is one of the better, if not top educational tablets available. There are no gimmicks or hidden ad's like some of the apps you can buy for kids have.

I bought this as a gift for my six year old cousin who was diagnosed with autism and learns very well through technology. This tablet beat out all the other kid friendly tablets because the main focus is learning but his favorite characters such as the Transformers can also be present without distracting from learning and it also seemed more kid durable. His parents have said that he hasn't put it down since he got it. I like that the cartridges can grow with him and that it's very interactive. I do wish there was more of a variety of games and that they didn't cost so much. However, there are still many things to do without the cartridges, he tells me often that he's drawing something. He loves it so I'm happy.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 5 year old nephew and he started playing with it right away. Pros are that the interface is easy to navigate and he started figuring out how to play the apps right away; also it presents a locked down environment so even very determined kids wouldn't be able to use it to go unmediated to the Wild West that is today's internet. There are a couple of cons; the tablet can sometimes be a little slow to respond especially when updating, plus the Leapfrog Connect app (if you sync the tablet from your laptop) can often choose to download a LOTTA info so you probably want to do that at night when the little ones are sleeping. But that sync also lets you track via Connect what they are learning. Overall I am satisfied with this product.

Bought it for my son after having his Leappad 2 for a year as an "upgrade" I was setting it up that night and noticed the screen kinda flicker but I figured it was just interference from another device, took roughly 4 hours to set up it kept having trouble with it. It lasted him less than 2 weeks (my son actually takes care of his things) and suddenly it just wouldn't turn on or anything even after being charged. We were skeptical about getting yet another leap frog product so we purchased a kids tablet for him instead and saved a lot of $$ we had been spending on apps, music and videos. The product itself isn't half bad but the apps and games get pretty expensive.

    LeapPad UltraXDI is junk!

LeapPad Ultra crashed after only a couple of months of use. My 4-year-old was sobbing hysterically when the screen crashed. Screen was all distorted. LeapFrog replaced it with a dud - must have been a return or refurb as the screen was stuck on "tune up". Argued for a week with LeapFrog customer service until they finally agreed to swap devices. Had to ship back, wait forever. The next leappad ultra xdi is also a dud. It says " sample" on the back. This one won't charge and now LeapFrog expects me to pay return shipping so they can " test" it. LeapFrog has the worst customer service ever!

We brought this for kids of a friend of my family's kids, and those kids love it. They can't seem to part with it even for a few minutes. It is good though cause almost all the things that these can do are educational related. It also makes it easy for us to buy expansion packs and add on programs for them to use at holiday time. This is the perfect gift for anyone 3-9... I say 3, cause it can keep a 3 year olds attention too. And the best thing is, it grows with the kids. In this regard, its because the programs get harder with age, but its not so hard that its not fun for the kids.

I bought this for my 6 year old granddaughter that I raise and she hardly ever wants to put it down. I never had to read how to operate it once I had it set up. My granddaughter picked it up and was able to operate it without any help. I love that it is so educational on many levels and that I get updates as to how much time she is spending on her apps, how many questions she answered and the percentage of them she answered correctly. It also works great for my grandson who is 10 and has learning disabilities. It is one tool that keeps their focus without me having to be right on top of them.

We gave our daughter the original LeapPad years ago and she loved it. I was expecting more upgrades from this version. Specifically, the screen quality is very low compared to other options in the market and the price. It also doesn't have all the bells and whistles that other Android based systems have, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This is a great learning tool and I believe its especially good for kids aged 3-7ish. Our 6 year old girl seems a little board by the limitations and slower response to touch and other actions compared to other technology. The 3 year old still loves it.

I bought this tablet for my 3.5 year old. He absolutely loves it!!!. There are a lot of leapfrog learning games to choose from in the online store. The games can be pricey but they offer special deals and bundles that help cut down on the cost. Whether your child is into cars, Jake the Pirate, Frozen, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc there is a game for them. Plus each game focuses on learning so your child can learn while having fun. I looked at several other tablets for my son but felt this was the best fit due to the learning games with the TV characters he loves.

The Leap Frog Ultra is a great kids tablet. my daughter is 3 and 1/2 and received a leap pad ultra xdi for Christmas. she picked it up right away and knows how to use it with minimal help. there are a ton of helpful learning games available that are fun for the kids while teaching. the price is a bit steep but it does everything you need it too in a kids tablet. the screen size is perfect. a little heavy though but i suppose that is to help the durability. Overall this is probably the best kids tablet on the current market for kids younger than 8-10
