Left 4 Dead has already set a new standard for me in the horror genre of gaming. It's style is completely unlike any other game you've ever played. Truly unique. Setting: Modern zombie apocalypse. Very chaotic. You do the math. AI: It has a real time difficulty feature built in to the game that will always step the difficulty up if you're moving too fast or dumb it down if you seem to be having trouble. Your teammates are sometimes "too good" as they will usually see and kill the "Special Infected" before you ever know they are there. Sometimes steal your shine/spot light. Graphics: Very good. Valve really hasn't done anything new with this game engine, so if you like games like Half-Life and Portal, then you will you be equally impressed with these graphics/gameplay. Story: There isn't much back story given in this game; On purpose. How would you feel if you woke up one day and there were zombies pounding away at your doors and windows? Me? I'd team up with some people and try to get to safety... Controls: Very easy to use. Standard FPS controls. Should feel natural within about 5-10 minutes of playing. Replay Value: This game has one of the best replay values I've experienced in a while. It has been packaged with an environmental randomizer. Meaning that every time you play through a campaign, every door, ever wall, every area, every enemy, and every weapon will be placed somewhere different. In short, good luck trying to form step-by-step strategies! You will never get bored playing this game. Online Play: Very good. The versus mode is excellent. Very fun and challenging. Playing through a campaign with 4 other friends is simply amazing. Playing with people you've never met before can really be rewarding. It's a great team building experience. (2 player split screen is available, even online! Do note that the graphics may suffer from this.) High Definition: Available in up to 1080p! The game actually has a "film grain" effect that is only accessible when playing on an HD tv. Worth Buying: Yes! This is one of those very few games that is worth the $60 price tag.

: For when the zombies actually attack!

I've been a big fan of zombie shooters for as long as I've been a gamer, and when I got this, all I could think was "Well, it doesn't look like Resident Evil...". But believe me, this game is what the U.S. army is going to train their troops with for when zombies actually do attack! Based on the teamwork of four survivors, the game consists of running through wide open areas such as a train yard, and close-quarters combat in areas as small as vents! Stray to far from your team, and you're a dead man walking! Good on singleplayer, but for a great gaming experience, get three good friends over for an all-nighter. You'll get into this game like never before, trust me! but besides gameplay, the effects of the game rock! when you shoot a zombie, he doesn't just fall down. No, if he's running at you, and you shoot him, his arm may fall off, he'll stumble a few steps desperatly trying to reach you, then maybe hit a wall and have his face slide down the side of the bricks and finally his corpse will fall to the ground. If the zombies havn't detected you, their actually fun to watch. It's like their just living life! Uh...undead life, that is...They lay down, sit, lean against walls, and even throw up. and if they're on a roof, sometimes they just...walk off! I love watching that! the most surprising thing about the game? Whenever you play, its a new experience. The zombies and special infected are ALWAYS in different places. No, not on a rotation, ie. ok two games ago there were in place A., then they were in place B., so now they have to be here in place C. No, it is completely randomized, and can still trick even the most experienced of gamers when they aren't expecting that tank that they thought was at the end of the level to come around the corner 5 minutes into it! My only complaint would be the repetitiveness. Run, shoot, run, shoot, oh gosh not another tank! run, shoot. But, when hundreds of zombies are running toward you, your buddy is downed, another one is jumped by a Hunter, and the other one is blinded by Boomer vomit, and you're the one with the fully loaded M16 and health packs, running and shooting can be one of the most epic experiences ever!

    Not your average co-op game

Left 4 Dead is advertised as a zombie apocalypse co-op game, and it does not fail to deliver. I played it for a week straight while on a vacation and kept finding new ways to entertain myself on top of the gameplay on its own; achievement hunting, trying to cause new conversations, and so on. The most interesting thing about this game--ignoring the incredible amount of variation in zombie designs, palettes, and character speeches--is that unlike other co-op games where the word 'co-op' was simply another term for 'multiplayer', this game does require you to actually depend on and aid your fellow players. Certain zombie attacks can render you incapacitated until an ally comes and helps you up, and if you die, your allies must find you when you respawn or you simply don't get out to the game again, for example. The thing I think puts people off this game the most, I believe, is that the individual campaigns are fairly short--largely to keep a frantic pace going--and altogether there's between four and six hours of gameplay, depending on one's skill levels. I personally just found that an incentive to play the campaigns at higher difficulty levels (expert mode is brutal, but hilarious to fail at over and over again) and try for Achievements, but really it's all a matter of choice as far as the game's replayability goes. As I said, I did play this game for a week straight. Basically, the game's glorious fun, and it's only over when you say it's over. Still, your life is meaningless without playing the game at least once.

    Great Mulitplayer Game

I went into this game not knowing much about it other than it is based around a zombie apocalypse and what my friends had told me. So I bought it on a Friday night and my buddies got on X-box Live and we decided to play the night away. Boy was that a night. Game play is fast paced run and gun with plenty of horror involved with all sorts of nasty brain eaters jumping out of the blackness. Its set up with 4 different levels with different chapters ranging from an Airport to a Rural Farm Area. It can be played on Split Screen with two people and bots taking the place of people. The bots are good but don't always make good choices and on one occasion I was left behind. But then again its better to play online. The game also has a VS mode where there are two teams, one being humans and the other being different types of zombies like the Hunter or the Tank. Another thing I must applaud is the director which controls the games play. So for example if you just went through a tough battle and are low on ammo and weapons the director will have less zombies attack the 4 players. I was caught several times off guard by taking a moment to catch my breathe or left my guard down only to get mauled by an angry zombie crowd. The game is great fun and my buddies and I had a blast. There is really no story other than the levels being set up as movies and at the end if someone is killed it will say in memory of....... All in all great game.

One of the best co-op games on Xbox 360

    Posted

Left 4 Dead is light on content, that's for sure. Only 4 chapters and all the modes (single-player, co-op, versus) are the same basic game. Four survivors have to fight through the zombie horde to get to a climactic ending where the hold out until help arrives. In co-op, you play with up to three friends as the survivors and in versus you either play as the survivors or special infected (smokers, hunters, tanks). So there isn't much there (I must note I never played the DLC), but what is there is highly replayable and a ton of fun with good teammates who cooperate and work together. The graphics aren't up to par with other Xbox 360 games like Gears of War or Call of Duty 4/WaW but are still really good considering the huge amounts of fast-moving zombies onscreen as well as all the tech going on behind the scene (physics, AI, the Director, etc.) running flawlessly, all with four people with four different connections. I wouldn't recommend solely playing this game as it will get boring pretty fast especially trying to play solo or with people who don't talk, much less work as a team. But as a game played casually maybe a few hours at a time Left 4 Dead excels. And as my Review Headline suggests, it is one of the best, if not the best purely co-op game on consoles. It may not offer much, but what is there is expeptionally high quality stuff with a lot of replayability and is frankly a lot of fun. I give it 4 stars.

Great game overall. Real easy to pick up and start blasting some zombies away. The "bosses" are annoying. If they hit you once, you're left stranded until a teammate comes and helps you or you die. You don't really fight them, you just avoid them and hopefully hit them first. The Tank is just a lumbering beast who hits your harder than regular zombies and really just a pain rather than scary or exciting. There's VERY few weapons. Pistol, 2 pistols (akimbo), uzi, shotgun, autoshotty, m16, and sniper rifle. Oh and there is a molotov and a pipebomb. The sniper is utterly worthless because the zombies are always sprinting at you and in your face. The m16 runs out really quick. So you really just play with the shotguns and pistols and blast away. This game is fun to play online as a zombie because you essentially try to screw over the survivors by grabbing them before they drop down a hole leaving them helpless because their buddies can't get back. Lot's of glitches that people take WAY too much advantage of to make it impossible for you to win. It could use some updates, at least double the weapons (Dead Rising style anyone?) and some more game types. I gave it a good score because I can't put it down, but it will soon grow old without an update.

Overall i would say this is a very good game made by Valve. If you enjoyed Half-life or Portal you would probably enjoy this game as well. Story: Not much to it except for that an infection spread around which infected humans, causing them to become zombies. Apparently there are a very few amount, which are immune to the infection. Once you start the game you find yourself with a group of four survivors. There are four campaigns to choose from. In each campaign your goal is to survive the massive amount of zombies and then be rescued by another group of survivors. All campaigns are short but very much enjoyable. Point of Game: Survive massive amount of zombies by using teamwork and get rescued. Gameplay: The controls are very simple and will not take long to get used to. It is almost the same controls as Half-life. What Makes This Game Fun: Killing an impossible amount of zombies and surviving just to get attacked by another hoard of zombies. That is what makes the game great. You will be shouting at the TV, "look out, here come more zombies," or "OMG we are in trouble now." This game will get your blood pumping and your trigger finger busy. One Bad Note: If you do not have xbox live or friends who enjoy killing zombies i would not suggest buying this game. Have fun and remember to close doors. : )

Overall this is a really good game. The AI is awesome, so your allies actually do something. The game isn't easy though. Random packs of zombies will attack from nowhere and they aren't the shambling moaning packs of mindless fools from previous zombie games. These zombies run at you with vehemence and climb obstacles to get to you. Include the fact that every once in a while a Hunter pounces on you, a Smoker wraps you in his tongue, a Boomer throws up on you or blows up next to you (attracts a ton of zombies), or a half-invincible Tank runs through the group and you have a relatively challenging game. Walk through the dark halls barely illuminated by your flashlight and listen to the sounds of Boomers throwing up, Hunters growling, Smokers gagging, and, most eerily, Witches crying and the game certainly keeps you tense. You find yourself hesitant to look around a corner or open a door. The graphics could be better. They're certainly not impressive for a next-gen game but they could be worse. They don't take away the fun of the game, but it would be way better if it had the graphics of, say, Bioshock at the least. All in all, I recommend this game, but mainly for the multiplayers out there, the story is lacking but Multiplayer is incredible. P.S. Don't startle the witch.

If you enjoy Zombie movie's like 28 Days Later or the Dawn of the Dead series, you will undoubtedly enjoy this game! No other game in the past has captured the online experience you will have with " Left 4 Dead "..! I admit that single player doesn't leave much to be desired, but all is forgiven, only because the multiplayer side is the best fun, I have had on Xbox 360 since its startup! I just love how unpredictable this game is, with an assortment of infected zombies that range from newly infected to special infected, that look like zombies on steroids, with intelligent AI that has given new life to the first person shooter. The graphics are not as bad as others have stated. In fact, it can be breath taking at times (Dead Air Level) just how good L4D graphics really are. Even the characters display some outstanding details, such as tatoo's and facial features. Sound is the standard digital dolby 5.1, but sounds amazingly creepy. I only hope Valve adds to the 4 campaigns that it is currently offering, as an update to increase gaming pleasure and keep its faithful salivating for Left 4 Dead 2! I am very satisfied with this game.. The only complaints I'm hearing, are coming from my kids, because Daddy took over the Xbox! :P

Best co-op game I've ever played.

If your looking for a 2-4 player co-op game, this is the best. If your looking for a 1 player game, you'll only find a few hours of entertainment from this. There are 4 scenarios, in which your goal is always the same: find a way out alive. There are only 8 different guns, and 2 types of explosives, but the co-op fun just keeps coming regardless. Zombies can run full speed, and attack with their fists. Alarms, bells, sirens all attract the zombies in large hordes. There are also special zombies. Smokers, grab people and drag them towards them with their toungues and produce smoke when killed. Boomers, fat methane filled zombies that can puke a goo which attracts zombie hordes, and explode when killed. Tanks, large powerfull zombies that deal serious damage, and can take serious damage. Hunters, fast zombies that can jump long distances and pin players down(other survivors must rescue you). And last, witches. Female zombies that only want to be alone to cry. Startling them garuntees severe injury to yourself. AI is pretty smart, so even one player mode can be fun, but its very short. Online VS mode lets you play as the survivors trying to live, or the zpecial zombies, trying to end the survivors.

There's only 1 goal in this game: survival. You have to keep venturing from safehouse to safehouse until you reach the ultimate goal at the end of the campaign. There are 4 campaigns, all with multiple chapters. It's all about kill zombies, sticking together, teamwork, helping your teammates, etc. The thing is, not everyone is a big fan of multiplayer/online gaming. You can play this game solo with the computer as teammates, but they're not as savvy and helpful as a human operating one of the 4 characters as your teammate. Very bloody, to say the least. It almost looks identical to the graphics of Half Life. Granted, it is the same developers of Half Life, but the graphics engine is identical. Kill kill kill. It's a mindless survival game where there's really no storyline. The backbone of this game is teamwork. Most of the games coming out including this one puts too much emphasis on multiplayer modes rather than on the solo campaign modes. Disappointing. This game is definitely a rental. Reminds me of 'The Club' how it was just a shoot shoot shoot game. Well, Left 4 Dead is kind of the same way. Kill kill kill, zombies, nothin' but zombies, all over the place, and move onto the next safehouse.

first id like to say that the 3 bad reviews this game has on this site lack any detail as to why its a bad game and the reason for this is it is not. If you are looking for a co-op game with the highest replayability of any game to date and one of the most fun versus modes to date then this game is for you. The 3 bad reviews saying to buy gears of war 2 or COD world at war are hilarious. GoW2 is so riddled with glitches it is near unplayable. left 4 dead has one major glitch that has already been fixed on the pc and will be fixed on 360 shortly. this game has given me hours upon hours of fun so far and it is still not even close to getting old. those complaining about story clearly dont see what valve was trying to do with the game. if you where stuck in a zombie apocalypse do you think you would know anything but I need to survive. didnt think so. that adds to the game in my opinion. I recomend any fan of valves games to purchase this and anyone who hasnt played a valve game you will soon learn why they are one of the most loved pc gaming companies and soon to be console companies. HAVE FUN

This game is pretty fun. There is really no story except that you are some survivors of this Zombie outbreak. Think Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, and Diary of the Dead (greatest zombie movie series ever by the master of zombie movies George A. Romero). You and three other survivors, can be the computer or better off you and up to three friends blast your way through wave after wave of infected zombies to get to where other surviors will come to rescue you. There are a few special infected who have deadly attacks. The graphics are not up to Gears of War 2 or Call of Duty standards but they are not that bad. There are only a few weapons but that is ok because your main focus is just getting through the level. At the end of each of the main stories (there are 4 of them) you will have the biggest challenge as you will have to fight off the horde till help arrives. This is a great game and you should check it out. If you do not have an Xbox Live account it may not be that fun. Playing online with your friends and just blasting your way through is a lot of fun.

I enjoy this game each time I play it. It's great to find my friends online and shoot zombies together to try to make it to the extraction zone. The game changes each time you play it so you never know exactly what is going to show up where. I like the different levels of difficulty you can set your play on too. Sometimes the characters will say funny things and if you don't like them or if they try to hog all the med kits you can shoot them (dead if you want and they will show up later and continue the fight without a grudge..the computer players, not so much your online buddies) another thing i enjoy is the opening video introduction, that looks great to me :) Overall i think it's an excellent game, the replay value is great, you try to work as a team to make it out alive, you're xbox live friends can join you and there are some nice achievements to be earned. Oh and let's not forget how you can play as the zombies in the versus mode!!! How fun is that!!

If you own left 4 dead and you do not own xbox live gold...either sell the game or get xbox live, cuz you are owning a pineapple and not hve any thing to cut it with. Yes, it may seem a little harsh to have to have to spend hundreds rather than 50. But once you get it going on live. You will be glad for every last cent. And once you do get xbox live, also have a headset. Because communication is vital, the survivors must stay together to survive. (Way different from other games). It's a concept that takes geting used to, but MAN its a ton of fun. In Versus mode, two teams of 4, one side as the survivors the other as infected, battle it out against each other. The survivers must make it to the safe house to win. the infected must make sure they don't. I won't go into infected types (due to character count). And the AI director gives a different expierence everytime you go through it. Every time. Expect to playing this game 28-weeks later. A+ must own for online shooter fans. (Dont dare rent, buy)

Dont get me wrong, this is a great game, but I was expecting a little more. First of all, theres never a dull moment with the waves of zombies flocking to you. The types of "super" zombies are cool also. Since it is so short, the developers have made it so zombies come at different times and places of the game, so if you go rushing into a room that you knew was empty before, it may not be empty again. My only gripes about this game were it was a little easy. Second, there could have been more of a story explaining who the characters are and how the zombie outbreak started. Third, it could have been a lot longer, as you are only given about 5 levels to choose from. Finally there could have been more weapons. The weapons do sound really good though. I have not yet played it online (which is what it is played best at) so I cannot judge it on that. Overall this is a good game if you simply love blasting zombies, but if you are expecting a detailed storyline to go with it then you may be disappointed.

The graphics in this game and the cooperative gameplay make this game a lot of fun to play. The gameplay is very fast paced and when the hoardes of zombies start coming you sometimes don't think it will end but the controls make this game a lot of fun to play if you are into shooters. The game itself is a little short but has a lot of replay value when you play with friends and try to go through boards with a different strategy. There are also downloads available on Live which helps to expand the replay of the game. It is very violent and graphic so it is not recommended for younger players or to be played when children are in the room. Be aware of this if you have small children and are sensitive to them seeing this type of violence. Due to the shortness of the game you may want to rent before buying unless you have friends whom already have the game that you can jump in and begin playing with.

I bought this game( don't remind me) based on the reviews I had read. At first I said OK this might be a good game, Then I began playing on line , matched up with a bunch of players that had no clue ,causing many deaths alot of which was mine. The game to me got boring very fast . Just how many times can you kill the same looking Zombies and have fun? So what if they are in different places they all are the same looking and they look like a waterfall coming off the buildings. Wow they were scary( NOT). I think the people who gave this game a 5.0 are trying to defend their $60.00 purchase,(don't remind me again) This game should have been relased at $30.00 tops, since it is only half of a game.( single player on this game, wait is their one? dosen't count) It looks and feels like a PS2 port. When the DLC is available to add a few more levels, 360 players be prepared to pay for this also. With the cost at $60.00 bucks it should be free but don't count on it.?

So Left 4 Dead for me was one of the best games I ever got for my 360. There are mean great things about this game. The first would be the difference every time you play it. Even if you played a level 100s of times it will always be different. This makes the placing of non-normal zombies good. You never know what will happen as you play. There are only 4 playable characters. This may sound bad but each play a stereotype horror movie character. Bill is the old guy who knows what to do. Luis is the black guy that doesn't want to die. Francis is the guy that just wants to kill and then Zoey the young person that watched a lot of zombie movies. Its a good game thats easy to just pick up and go with. The bad parts would be there are only 4 maps(levels). Not a lot of guns to pick. Sniper rifle, auto-shotgun, pump-shotgun, AK 47, ozzie, and pistol. Not a lot. Buy this game it was AWESOME playing. I am still playing it not even done with any of it yet.

I played the demo at my friends house and I can't wait to game this with three other friends. One of the things we like to talk about every once in awhile (normally after we watch some zombie related movie (dawn of the dead, resident evil, etc)) is what would happen if zombies every took over and where we would go for weapons and who we would try to save and who we wouldn't lol, but with this game we almost don't have to pretend anymore. Ever since I got gears of war 2, this has been my most anticipated game to get. Unlike resident evil and dead rising these zombies actually run like in the movie dawn of the dead and that makes the game all the more heart-pounding. The graphics were good, but I've seen better. You have a variety of guns and there is ammunition, guns and health gracefully dispersed through the game. I can't wait to play the whole game with a few friends and take on the zombie apocalypse.
