This handheld is worth it if you are wanting a handheld that’s comfy in the hands, doesn’t get too loud from fan noise, and decent battery life. Able to get between 2.5-5 hrs depending on games and if i took the time to tweak it or just OoB settings. SteamOS is the way to go. Pictures include Dbrand Killswitch case and a JSAUX matte screen protector. Def recommend a matte protector. Recommend some stick grips. Stock ones are rather weak in that regard

Hey Lester,

Regarding the battery life, depending on the demand of the game you're playing, by pressing the Legion R button to launch the quick menu, you can switch to lower power mode to save battery. In the menu, under the performance tab, users can toggle thermal modes and prioritize battery life by using the default mode or creating a custom thermal mode should you not be satisfied with the 3 presets. These adjustments can also be made by going into Legion Space > Settings (Legion Space can be launched quickly by pressing the Legion L button (Legion Logo above the button).
We are glad to read that the Legion Go S has been otherwise great for you.

This device has me wanting to go back to PC gaming which I will be doing, the Rog Ally S is comfortable to hold for hours without a case. The 120hz screen is nice to look at, it has VRR and plays everything I throw at it. The only con to me is the loud fans, but that only happens when you play in performance mode, I played on balance. Battery life is about 2-3 hours which I think is normal for these powerful handhelds. I would wait for the Z2 Extreme devices or Xbox Rog Ally, Steam Deck OLED would be the sweet spot if you’re not looking to play the latest and greatest AAA games. For me this device is a 9/10, but I’m returning to get a home gaming pc instead. Console gaming is a mess right now with prices.

Lenovo Legion Go Extreme is a worth purchase. Its a Steam Deck on roids. You can see the specs on this site. It performs really well. Fast and fluid UI. Very comfortable in the hands. Didn’t feel any cramping in my hands like when I play Nintendo Switch. Everything is controller sized so its all comfy. Games load fast and play so smooth. If you have a smaller library of games from Steam, I would check first to see if they are compatible with Steam OS and the Steam Deck/ Legion Go Extreme. Also the battery is good but you really have to lower your settings to get the most battery time out of it. If you’re like me, I don’t do that, everything is Maxxed out! So I keep it plugged in while I play. The touch screen also is kind of sensitive and sometimes I accidentally touch it when my right thumb touches the screen while using the thumbstick. This Device might look expensive but you have to really think about the incredible value for this price and the fact that games on Steam go on sale often and are dirt cheap for some Triple A titles. Also wear headphones. The fan can be loud so its sometimes difficult to hear the dialog on the speakers. Totally recommend Lenovo Go Extreme!

Perfect handheld imo. Steam OS runs flawlessly. Hands down better OS than Windows for mobile gaming. I can put this device to sleep, and the hop back on days later without having completely drained the battery. The performance, particularly with Loss-less scaling installed, is phenomenal. I'm playing FF7 remake at 1080P high settings, with lossless scaling, at 60fps locked, on balanced settings (~22-25W TDP), and only occasionally dipping into the 50s. If you have a backlog of indie, emulation, or even AAA games that do not require super tight latency, this is an amazing device.
Ergonomics and screen are phenomenal. The 8 inch screen is definitely on the larger side for a mobile gaming device, but the ergonomics make it very tolerable. I have no hand fatigue after hours of playing. Battery life is also decent at around 2-2.5 hrs for AAA games running on balanced settings.
If all you play is competitive FPS shooters, then this is not the device for you as you're limited by SteamOS. I can only comment on the Z1E version. Based on reviews and previews of the upcoming Z2E devices, there is likely to be little meaningful improvement in the next generation of mobile gaming devices, and at much higher prices. Until Steam releases a new Steamdeck with a generational leap, this should be the device to get.

Great handheld! Having Steam OS makes the handheld experience much better. The Z1E chip is still powerful and great for AAA gaming. The screen is gorgeous. The handheld is super comfortable. The only nitpick I have is the battery size. I wish it was 80wh. Other than that it’s near perfect.

The prime Z1E handheld with some small negatives

PC handhelds with Z1E have evolved a lot over the past years and i believe the Lenovo Go S Z1E is the pinaccle of all the engineering. The extra RAM helps in aome modern games where lots of textured need to be loaded. The CPU and GPU performance is in fact slightly better than both ROG and other Legion handhelds with the same APU. I also am biased towards SteamOS as it’s very streamlined and light - perfect for a handheld. The screen is a good size and resolution (Ally too small and Go is too big). Cons? Battery - thats a big one for gamers. It runs about 2 hours on AAA games where you’re trying to hit 60 FPS, but thats it. You can lower the settings and make it last longer of course. And with indie titles you get great performance. If you’ve heard about the loud fans - yes all the rumors are true. They can get pretty loud when you’re working this at max pwrformance but so does every other handheld. On the Balanced profile it’s usually perfect. It’s also not a whiny high pitch sound, which is good. Also, it’s easy to install non steam games using the heroic launcher. The only downside is probably that the competitive games with anti-cheat just dont work well with linux, but you can always dual boot Windows. The handheld community has come so far that you can find tons of guides to mod and improve your devices in eveey way imaginable. Overall, would recommend 100%.

A brilliant machine. Beautiful big screen, comfortable and very fast - easily play AAA games on the largest colorful 120 Hz screen with HDR and VRR. Great ergonomics, the most comfortable handheld on the market. And add to that a fast Z1 Extreme processor (don’t buy the version with the Z2 Go processor which is considerably slower despite the confusing name!).
All in all this thing is within a few percent or a few fps as fast as the 50% more expensive Legion Go 2 or other handhelds with Z2 Extreme.
And with SteamOS it’s much much easier to operate than any Windows 11 handheld (that OS is NOT designed for handheld use! It doesn’t have the ability to turn off then on and resume games with no battery drain. Win 11 also runs games slower!).
This is the best handheld gaming device on the market. 7” screens are so 2022!

It’s a great device really. Its ergonomics were great and the size felt just right for the performance it was giving out. There was a bit of problems thought most of them were personal bias against Linux, and some of them were just because of how limited steamOS is.
(First review on a product ever so please tell me if I can improve on my reviews)
Pros:
Size - 8in is probably the perfect size for a handheld. It’s not too big or too small, depending on your hands or needs, the screen will be great for anyone.
Performance - since it’s using steamOS, its performance and use of the Z1E chip is great, running most triple AAA games at 60fps on average setting or sometimes high setting and some games like Helldivers 2 on the highest difficulty with multiple teammates at 60 gps on lower settings using lossless scaling still looks and feels great. And smaller games obviously run 100+ fps
Ergonomics - it is not too bulky and for my hands which are a little fatter than most people, fits really well in my hands, where my fingers on the back rest on the extra buttons. So really comfortable
Architecture/Airflow - the way the Go S uses the airflow is really well, my hands rest well without being in the way of the intakes on the back. And the fans work great, it’s not loud at all but you can tell they are working well with how much air they are pumping out making sure the device stays cool. the hot air releases from the top near the triggers, but far away enough where you won’t feel them.
Setup - It was great, since it’s Steam all I had to do was login, download a game from my current library, and play. It’s plug in play really so if you don’t want to tinker with settings and only want to use your steam library on the go, Then this is perfect
Con’s:
OS: SteamOS is great, but unfortunately I didn’t do enough research on the fact that a lot of the games that I want to run was not supported. I knew it was using Linux but did not know that any EA games were not supported since EA believes Linux is some kind curse. Of course this is not Steam’s fault or Lenovos. But most of my research consisted these games worked well on the Go S until recently. This is personal, but a lot of the games I wanted to play were using EA, so 90% of my library was out the window. Helldivers and some games work. But I was hoping for some EA games and even some games from steam that uses 3rd party handlers. I was able to get them to work but the setup took a while.
Mouse TrackPad - It’s horrendous, everytime I want to press it, it moves severely to the left or right, it’s too small and doesn’t even work some times since it seems to not be programmed the same way as the steam deck. This trackpad is just frustrating and seems like a waste of space on the device.
Summary:
If you only have steam games and not any games that don’t use Linux, this thing is great (except the awful mouse trackpad) but like I said, the 3 starts mostly come from how SteamOS is unfortunately limited to a few games that I so happened wanted to play. So if you’re thinking of playing this. Make sure the game is steam deck compatible, and if it’s not, usually it is, but since it’s not on steam it doesn’t seem compatible. But make sure you do research on the what you want to do with it and not the actual device itself, since the Go S is really great (except that trackpad)
At the end, I returned it since it did not play any of the games I wanted to really so that’s mostly on my end for not looking into the game side of the issue. So I went with the MSI Claw 8ai+ at the end of it. And though I miss how simple Steam OS was, it can play all my games and more using windows. Except for the fact that I had to setup it up after like 4 hours of tinkering and updating. So if you want to play small games only from steam. Go with a Steam Deck. But if you want to play games that are more demanding and only from Steam, The Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS is probably a better option.

Stellar Handheld Gaming Experience with the Legion

I recently picked up the Legion Go S 8” 120Hz Gaming Handheld with the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, running SteamOS, 32GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD. As someone who’s been diving into portable gaming, this device has quickly become my go-to for on-the-go sessions. Here’s why I’m absolutely thrilled with it:
First off, the fact that it runs SteamOS out of the box is a game-changer. Unlike Windows-based handhelds that can feel bloated and clunky, SteamOS is sleek, lightweight, and laser-focused on gaming. It’s built on Linux, which means it boots up in seconds without all the unnecessary background processes that drain battery life on Windows devices. Updates are seamless and handled directly through Steam—no dealing with intrusive Windows updates or antivirus pop-ups mid-game. Plus, the integration with my Steam library is flawless; everything just works without needing to tweak settings or install extra drivers. If you’ve ever fought with Windows on a handheld for controller mapping or performance optimization, SteamOS eliminates that hassle entirely, delivering a console-like experience that’s optimized for efficiency and immersion.
Portability is another huge win. At just 8 inches, it’s compact enough to slip into my backpack without feeling bulky, making it perfect for travel, commutes, or lounging on the couch. The ergonomics are spot-on—the detachable controllers feel natural in hand, with responsive buttons and joysticks that don’t cramp up during long play sessions. And let’s talk about that purple color; it’s a vibrant, eye-catching Steam edition hue that stands out from the usual black or gray gadgets. It adds a fun, personalized touch without being over-the-top.
Performance-wise, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme handles demanding titles smoothly on the 120Hz display, and with 1TB of storage, I’ve got plenty of room for my library. Boot times are lightning-fast, often ready in under 10 seconds, which means I can jump right into games without waiting around.
Overall, if you’re in the market for a powerful, user-friendly handheld that prioritizes gaming purity over general computing, the Legion Go S is a fantastic choice. Highly recommend it—it’s elevated my portable gaming experience to the next level!

The Lenovo Legion Go is an absolute beast of a handheld gaming device. The performance is top-tier it runs modern AAA titles smoothly and looks stunning on that huge QHD+ display. The detachable controllers are a nice touch, especially for those who like flexibility in how they play, and the overall build quality feels premium and solid in the hands.
Windows integration makes it super versatile — you can use it as a mini laptop, a gaming PC, or even dock it to a monitor for a full desktop experience. The screen is vibrant, the controls are responsive, and it genuinely feels like a premium step above most other handhelds.
The only real downside is the battery life. It drains pretty quickly when playing demanding games, so you’ll want to keep a charger nearby. But honestly, that’s a small trade-off for the power this thing delivers.
If you’re looking for a portable gaming powerhouse that can handle anything you throw at it, the Legion Go is absolutely worth it.

The Legion Go S Z1 extreme w/ steamos is a handheld power house. A true gaming handheld we’ve all been waiting for. This little thing can do just about anything. The steamos version is much more snappier than the Windows OS. Windows OS has to much bloat going on in the background causing it to be less snappy than the steamos version. This handheld fits comfortably in your hands with a vibrant 8 inch screen. Easy controls. Linux soft ware does take some time to get used to if you’re accustomed to windows os. Took me a day or two. Definitely worth it though. It little pricey. But it’s a handheld PC. Works well with Lenovo docking station. You can hook this bad boy up to a monitor. Since this device enables Bluetooth you can Bluetooth just about anything. I have my keyboard, mouse and gaming headphones Bluetooth to it. If you want the absolute best in handheld gaming this is it. I definitely highly recommend.

Love the Legion Go for quick play sessions and the way it jumps straight into Steam. It boots fast and gets into games without delay, and the eight inch 120 Hz screen looks smooth and sharp. The Z1 Extreme chip and the generous memory make menus snappy and keep games feeling responsive, and the one terabyte drive gives real room for installs so there is less shuffling. The controls feel soft to the touch with precise inputs, and the body feels sturdy with materials that hold up well. After a few days the shell still looks clean, the buttons have a consistent feel, and the whole unit gives a solid in hand impression that makes it easy to use on the couch or at a desk.
Battery life is the weak spot for me, though having USB C cables around makes it easy to top up between sessions. Storage or battery upgrades are possible but take patience and the process is more of a chore than I expected, so I plan to rely on the internal drive for a while. The good news is that day to day use is smooth, the instant start is reliable, and the software side feels stable with Steam at the center. The price sits on the high side, but if you will use it often the performance and build make it worthwhile, and the price for the quality is good.

Really Good! 8" Screen Z1E Well Built

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This Legion is an excellent device. I've used several handhelds including the steam deck OLED and Asus ROG ally.
The steam deck OLED is a truly great device especially at the price, but with the 800p screen and less power, it is more at home with lesser demanding games.
The ROG ally, with windows or bazzite OS, is also a great device, but I always felt the 7" screen left something to be desired when it comes to the size.
When I saw this Lenovo Legion Go S I knew it was likely the product for me as I like to play more demanding games and wanted a larger screen than the ROG Ally.
The legion is well built, very solid. The buttons feel good and color of the product has a nice purple undertone to it that I like. 2 USB C ports. Hall effect joysticks. Comfortable to hold.
SteamOS is excellent. Can't say enough about that - it really changes the way you can use a PC handheld. There is no "fluff" of Windows. The downside is you lose compatibility with things like call of duty due to the anti cheat, but many things do work.
I've been playing and enjoying Hogwarts Legacy, Stellar Blade, No man's sky, Fantasy Life, Skyrim, Halo MCC, Final Fantasy 7, Tony Hawk 3+4, and the Witcher 3. All run like a dream on this device. I set the custom mode to a TDP of 18w which gives a bit of a boost over the built in "balanced" mode but doesn't drain the battery as much as the performance or custom 33w mode.
Speaking of which, the 8" 1200p screen is amazing for being a non-oled. Stuff like halo master chief collection at 120hz runs like a dream. More demanding games around 45-70fps benefit from the VRR aspect of the screen and show no tearing or jittering. That's another benefit of steamOS - it just runs smoother than windows.
Fan noise is very good - consistent and fairly quiet. No random whining up and down annoyingly.
Battery life could be better, but I typically do not play long sessions anyway, so for me personally it's not a huge issue. You can get 1:45-2:00 of a demanding game with balanced or 18w TDP like I set it to, or around 3-4hrs of a less demanding game like Stardew Valley or even Skyrim.
Another area I wish was better was the upgradability. If you want to upgrade the SSD, it's more tedious to open up than other handhelds, although part of that is due to the improved build quality. You can just add a microSD card too, and I added a 1TB microSD card and it's worked flawlessly.
The speakers are fine but not anything amazing. The touchpad is not very useful. The steam deck touchpads are much more useful. I don't use it though, so it doesn't make a difference in usability for me.
The back buttons on the bottom of the device are well placed so you don't accidentally press them which I also like.
I wish the legion Go S came with a pouch or case in the box. I bought the $20 Lenovo one on amazon but they could have included it for free in the box.
SteamOS on other handhelds is very good, and improving by the day. If you opt into the beta version in the settings you can change the RGB color and brightness of the joystick lights but I'm sure this is coming soon to the stable version.
Overall I really really like this device. It's a handheld that's well built, powerful enough for demanding games, 8" screen makes a tremendous difference over 7", great steamOS. It changes the way I play games and makes me enjoy some games a lot more than sitting at a computer.

This is a very nicely designed handheld. Before I start my my review, please note it is from a Steam Deck OLED 1TB owner's perspective. With that said...
Pros:
- Great ergonomics - feels awesome in the hands; comparable with Steam Deck except I prefer the symmetrical thumbsticks on the Steam Deck. To reach the right thumbstick my hand actually has to offset from full contact with the grip. The Steam Deck I can hold fully with no issues. I think one could eventually get used to the Legion Go over time though.
- Great screen. Between this LCD and the Steam Deck OLED ... I couldn't really tell the difference in low light. But in brighter lights, the Steam Deck screen's anti-reflective coating wins hands down. By comparison, the Legion Go screen in the right angles can almost double as a mirror! Probably better to apply some kind of screen protector with anti-glare if expected to game a lot in brighter environments.
Cons:
- Trackpad - nigh unusable. Coming from a Steam Deck, it's puzzling why this is even there. Trying to use it like the Steam Deck track pads to move a mouse cursor is a futile effort. It doesn't move, then moves, then jumps too far; trying to move it back repeats the experience. Basically just no.
- Performance out of the box; it's set to play games at its native resolution of 1080p, which basically negates any kind of improvement the Z1E chip is supposed to give over the Steam Deck APU. Quick tests for games such as Resident Evil 4 remake, Lies of P, and Warhammer Space Marine 2 did not produce any notable performance fps improvements over the Steam Deck that I had expected - maybe my expectations were too high?
- Higher TDP made no difference that I could see (again no tweaks, just out of the box). I cranked it way up to 30W from 15W and *maybe* saw 1-2 fps improvement? Basically nothing. The bottleneck has got to be somewhere else I suppose, maybe some kind of memory bandwidth? Kind of a letdown if true, because then one would have paid for all this power for almost nothing.
Neither pros nor cons, or just not enough info
- I did end up getting really good performance vs. the Steam Deck but it took some tweaking. I installed LSFG and FSR4 plugins, and fixed the game resolution to 800p to match the Steam Deck and whoa, I was gaming at 100+ fps on Lies of P (Steam Deck could go from 80-90 with similar config). This is neither a pro nor a con because I felt if one was to spend the money for this but have to step down the native resolution, it's kind of a wash. But it's a way to get the performance for sure.
- I read about other reports on battery life being particularly bad on this; but all my gaming sessions are very short, maybe 20 mins or so. Hence I didn't really have an issue on this one.
All in all, if considering one of these at MSRP, I would probably advise one to get Steam Deck OLED (preferably a refurbished unit) for max value - install the LSFG and FSR4 plug ins and enjoy. If one could find an open box excellent for the price I got it, maybe an argument could be made if one isn't expected to try navigating SteamOS desktop mode with that unusable trackpad. Then it's also a great device. Hope this helps folks who are on the fence!
If one already has a Steam Deck OLED, it's probably a good guess by now my advice would be to keep that and wait for more advancements like Intel's recently announced Panther-lake chips to make it into handhelds and see.
