    No-brainier

    Posted .

Lenovo included some useful apps geared towards tweaking various performance settings. These are applications that I would not consider bloat-ware. I typically remove several programs from new laptops as soon as I power them up. The only thing that was nixed on this one was McAfee virus scanner. I prefer another brand. There is a button near the power button. If you hold it for 2 seconds, it launches an app that creates a restore image of your current system. You can then restore from your backup or restore to out-of-box configuration just by holding that button down. I've owned other LENOVO laptops - this feature works VERY well. Video at 1080p was flawless! This and the strength of the CPU were my only concerns, so I won't bother going through my experience in great detail. Viewing angles are acceptable. If you want stellar angles you'll need to pay quite a bit more for a higher end unit. At the "under $400 dollar" mark, this display can be considered stellar :-) You need to go to the store and touch, feel, squeeze and lift this thing to reach the "no-brainier" mark. The shell is remarkably resistant to scratches and smudges. The speakers on this thing are Awwwwesome. As an IT Analyst for 15+ years, I can assure you that LENOVO, AMD and MicroSoft have found synchronicity within this computer.

    Moderate Performance with light gaming

I just got my N586 Lenovo and it is a good computer. Important: First things I noticed is it comes with Mcafee antivirus. I noticed that Mcafee was slowing the computer down alot and performance was suffering and buggy. I uninstalled it with Mcafee Removal Tool. Now it is working fine and the Windows Experience Index/Rating went up by 20% after I uninstalled Mcafee. The laptop has the best display I have ever seen. Clear bright colors and not faded. After using this laptop, my Dell Inspiron laptop screen looks washed away. Also, you get a good Seagate hardrive. Most laptops come with cheap ones. Hardrive performance is excellent. The graphic card is great in this laptop. HD and blueray look awesome and much better than other laptops. Plus you can game on it. I played counterstrike on it and it gave me no lag. On my Dell, that has i3 in it, you cannot play counter strike because of too much lag. So clearly the graphics are much better than intel. The cpu is slightly slower than the Pentium cpu, but fast enough for general stuff. It performs like a high end core2duo, rather than the new intel processors like i3 or pentium. The keyboard is excellent. The only problem is the enter and backspace keys are small, but after using it a while I have no problem. The touchpad is awesome. It has like twenty different functions. It is spacious large and smooth, Because of its big size it can interfere in typing, but you can turn it off by the Fn key. Another problem is the touchpad is covered in rubber and not that smooth. However I found a solution. I put a smartphone screen protector on it from a galaxy s3 and now it is smooth as silk. The speakers suck. Satisfactory sound. However audio through headphones is loud and clear. The build quality is solid, but the edges on the base are sharp and will cause problem after long use, I avoid them by keeping my hand up. Battery is great and the laptop is lightweight. The laptop cosmetically is not shiny colorful, but simple black plastic. It is excellent for movies and games. My advice is if you want more graphics/ display (movies, games) then go for amd, but if you want raw speed go with intel. Overall good computer.

    Fastest laptop under $400-

Shortly after I bought the first laptop for myself, my husband's old desktop from 2005 (1GB/ 250GB# suddenly stopped working. Because it died unexpectedly and we recently purchased the laptop, we had a tight budget. We needed a computer that was cheap enough, but also good enough to satisfy his basic needs: Email, Web surfing, Movies, Skype, Word and Excel. We weren't picky about the brands or looks. My check points were mainly RAM, hard drive memory, the speed of processor and USB 3.0. I wanted it to have minimum 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, at least 2.0 GHz speed and preferably 4 USB ports with a few UBS 3.0 ports. This laptop has everything we need!! This has an accelerated processor that gives you 2.7 GHz which is faster than my laptop which was priced at $579.99. #Hey, what's up with that?! LOL# The set up was simple and easy. The battery was charged fully in very short time. The case is rubbery so you have a nice grip and less concern for scratches and fingerprints. The keyboard is pretty sturdy and bouncy. The numeric pad is a nice plus and having 4 USB ports is very helpful since he uses a wireless mouse. The sounds, display and webcam are all good enough for his needs. I think this has the best performance for the price #$379.99) and perfect for the basic use! If you want the latest tech and fancier functions, be ready to spend a lot more. This laptop may be simple, but it has very strong basics. After using such an old desktop for so long, he is still amazed by the speed and the display that this laptop provides! It turned out that Best Buy started having this one in "Weekly Deal" for $369.99 two days after my purchase. Their "Price Match" policy reimbursed me the difference. Awesome! We are very happy with this laptop!

great laptop for people on a tight budget

went to bb looking for a cheap replacement because my laptop died.. i cant say much for the staff at this particular one.. was too busy helping a very underdressed blond.. but whatever.. i spent around an hour checking out all of the laptops in the under $400 range, and bang for the buck, this is it.. it shows performance levels better than the intel i3 and if you do as i did, upgrade the memory to 8gb right out of the box.. this laptop flies.. setup took less than 5 minutes.. and there isnt alot of bloatware on this laptop as there was on my last computer purchases. iam beginning to notice the track pad is kind of touchy, but it is bigger than average.. just going to take some getting used to.. as for other commenters viewing angle problem.. the screen can be tilted forward and back just like all other laptops.. you can see it better if you move it. anyway, this has to be one of the fastest laptops i have owned.. and granted its not an avid gamers laptop, it will play alot of games with flawless reproduction with its amd grafics also take note.. that upgrades (harddrive and memory) are very easy to get to , just two screws hold on the whole bottom panel. sound quality and volume can get quite loud.. not dre beats or anything but way better than average speakers.. take the time to look around in the store, its not always better to listen to commenters.. i took time to check out a few different models and im glad i went with this one..

    Good basic laptop

First of all the reason I had to buy this unit was because the tech in the Geek Squad said my Compaq/HP laptop was going to cost almost 200 bucks and over a week to repair, so being in business for myself and HAVE to have a computer at home and in the field I broke down and bought this Lenova laptop. It was a very good price and the salesman was very helpful. But after purchasing this laptop and taking my old one home I found if I hit the F11 key I was able to restore it and it worked fine. I now use that one as a back up, but did not have to spend over 300 bucks for a new one. So back to this laptop. It works very well. I primarily upload simple reports and pictures for my work so huge gigabytes of memory was not necessary. The display is very good, and clear. The desktop for Windows 7 is also nice, simple and not overly complicated. At first I was skeptical of the soft touch feel of the mouse and areas surrounding the keyboard but after using it for awhile I really like it. The only complaint is the keyboard has a small shift key and the NumLock key is easy to hit when you go to use the Backspace key. Other than that this is a very good basic laptop with plenty of features.....battery life is very good too. I would recommend this unit.

Excellent performance, budget price, poor display

    Posted .

For the price, this laptop provides killer performance in it's class. I love the 2-USB 3.0 ports and with 4 USB ports in all, there are plenty to power your peripherals. You also get a DVD drive, excellent audio and a keyboard with integrated number pad. Battery life is not as advertised though. I only get about 4 hours of a combination of watching streaming video and surfing. I'm suprised at how zippy the computer is. It's showing a Windows Experience Index rating of 5.0 . I do not like the rubberized coating over the trackpad. Very poor design choice there... but I usually use this with a wireless mouse so for me it's not that big of a deal, unless I don't have the mouse with me in which case I dislike the touchpad. Compared to others in this price range, the Lenovo is probably the best performer with USB 3.0. The negatives are the display quality and rubberized touchpad. Competing products with better displays don't have USB 3.0 or as good a Windows Experience Index. So you really need to decide what's more important to you.

Great Computer for a Great Price!

    Posted .

I purchased this computer as a replacement for my Toshiba. I was on a budget so I wanted a good computer under $400. I knew that it would be hard to find but, I got lucky with this purchase! I purchased this computer a couple of weeks ago and so far so good. This is the first time I've purchased this computer brand and the first time I have purchased a computer under $400. I went to the store in Savannah, GA and the customer service was very good and knowledgeable about the products. I purchased this computer to be used in my Home Based business but, I have come to realize all of the extras things I can do on it. This computer is a High Quality Device for individuals and a business on a Budget. The only thing I replaced was the MS Office 2010 for the MS Office 2007...I like the 2007 version better than the 2010...its easier to use. The computer was easy to set up and didn't come with a lot of unnecessary software on it. I can log in using the pre-installed Facial Recognition Software...which I love. This is the best way to ensure that no one can access your computer. I didn't previously see that in the specs...so I was surprised that it was on the computer. I recently decided to run a game on it to try out PC Gaming when I am not working...and the Game runs great. I don't have to be connected directly to the internet via cord to get a smooth connection with the game. Before I put a game on the PC I made sure that I had all the specs needed to run a game...the game is Skyrim. This game is a high spec game and the Graphics are great! I have played this game on the X-Box and I can't see a difference between the X-Box version and the computer version. Furthermore, this computer is High Quality for a great price and can be used for personal and business!

Simply put, I am pleased with this laptop computer. I was rather confused by the setting on the track pad when I first got it- tapping the pad is like a mouse-click unless you go into the minimized task bar menu and change the settings on the ELAN pointing device. I was opening things without meaning to for a few hours! I didn't spend too much, it works well, and I would recommend it to anyone else needing a laptop computer for work or school, even gaming if you have a mouse.

Great laptop for the everyday user

    Posted .

I bought this laptop to replace my fiancee's ailing boat anchor of a laptop from 9 years ago. To her, this laptop is top notch. To me, I agree with the other commenters, the display is fine and shows nice crisp images and videos. I usually install my own OS due to bloat but this really didnt have much. I booted it up, connected to the network and got rid of McAfee and a couple of other programs I refuse to use and gave it to my lady. She is picky about things like the keyboard and touch pad but this passed her test with flying colors. The feel of the laptop is almost a rubbery feel which I think is great, no smudging or staining or scratches and its not a hard textured plastic like my Vaio is. The touch pad is large for the size of the laptop which is nice. The weight, well, its like a feather compared to what she had. Its nice that it has 4 USB ports with two of them being USB 3.0 and an HDMI out basically making this a good laptop for use into the future without the worry of having to upgrade soon. So far she loves this laptop and I would reccomend this over the other similar priced units based on the feel alone.

    Great value for casual use

This laptop is a great value. It has more than enough performance capability to download music and edit MS Office documents, which is pretty much all I needed. It wakes up quickly, goes to standby with one button push, and I was able to upgrade it to Windows 8 with no complications. The display is nice and bright. I like having the 10-key, but the whole keyboard is like a bunch of Chiclets with dead space in between, instead of having the keys touch each other. Also, I don't think there is a Function key to mute the sound. You can turn it up and down, but can't quickly mute. I haven't pushed the battery life much, so I can't speak to that. However, the fan is very quiet and the laptop doesn't get hot after a few hours' light use.

    Pretty good for the price!

I bought this laptop because I wanted something that wasn't too expensive. All I wanted to do was a little gaming and basic computer stuff that the everyday user does, i.e. internet surfing, movies, Skype, music and a great free online game called League of Legends which it does all of it just great! The keyboard is very nice and seems pretty light. I would recommend this if you are looking for something with a little extra power to play games but not pay a lot. Budget gaming PC!

Best choice for a laptop on a budget.

    Posted .

When I went to Best Buy, this was the least expensive laptop on display. I was leery of getting the cheapest one but as I tried out the display laptops I was impressed with the keyboard, trackpad and case on this one. It features a full sized keyboard with number pad, a must for anyone who works with numbers on a regular basis. The laptop has a rubbery feel and is quite light. It does not get hot and the battery has been lasting about 2.5 - 3 hours. The Windows Experience Score was 5.0 thanks to the graphics score (the others in this price range are about 4.9). I only gave it 4 for display because the resolution is maxed out at 1366 x 768 and a 4 for performance as it would be nice to have more cores in the CPU. But those features would lower battery life and raise the price, so perhaps those features are appropriate the way they are. I will also second the notion that this laptop did not come with much for bloatware installed. I removed McAfee and the Cyberlink Power2Go, replacing them with my preferred applications. I backed up the system with the Cyberlink One Key Recovery tool, I am not sure if that application will stay installed, we will see.

    Amazing value

    Posted .

I purchased this just so I would have something for writing books and basic presentations. I'm mainly an Intel guy (12 core i7 desktop) but was interested in this because of the reviews. Gotta say, I am so glad I got this over the slightly more expensive i3. The graphics alone blow away any expectations I had. You can actually game on this thing! 1080p plays seemlessly. The other review said something about bad viewing angles, but I'm moving it as I write this review and don't notice anything other than a beautiful screen. Maybe he got a bad one. All manufacturers have bad units. Overall, I am VERY satisfied with my purchase. I also purchased the service plan, so I'm covered for the next couple of years until I want to buy another one. But for my first laptop, I am not pleasantly surprised. I am out and out amazed. If you want a basic to mid-level computer GET THIS!!!

The laptop is fine but the battery life its half of the one in the ads.it had some initial problems in connecting to Wi fi. But that disappeared over time. It has great value for money and runs pretty good. Increasing or decreasing volume should have dedicated keys, should not have to use the function key for that.

OK. Nice display and sound but cheap plastic case

    Posted .

This seems like a decent enough machine. For the price I'm not thrilled but not so unhappy as to take it back. The entire case feels really thin and lightweight. The DVD cover just fell off the third day. What held it on were two tiny plastic clips - nothing basically. I would have prefered the Toshiba case I think. I do basic computer work - word processing, e-mails etc with just a little website support along with Adobe pro to make fliers and such. It works fine for that but so did my old Dell laptop. This is light and thin and I like the feel of the keyboard. Touch Pad - it drove me crazy!! I had to turn off the 'tap to click' and just use the actually buttons now. There is what they call 'palm check' which didn't seem to make any difference at all. The cursor jumped all over while I was typing. There are also some built in things like zoom that I can't seem to turn off so while using the touchpad sometimes the entire window will become huge or tiny. I spent a few hours trying different drivers but I ended up just turning off as much as i could. I have the extended warranty so I can take this back when the buttons stop working which I'm assuming they will. Like 99% of the world I don't use most of the capacity of this machine. I like that it boots up faster than my old laptop lol. Other than that I wish there was a laptop with a good screen and speakers but otherwise fairly stripped down.

    Not Impressed

I purchase a laptop once a year for Best Buy for myself and give my old ones to my son or family who need one. This is BY FAR the worst piece of junk I have ever had! Even at this price point its not worth it. The texture absorbs everything and at times can look messy even when your hands are clean (wiping it with a cloth or paper towel doesn't help). I primarily just use it for checking emails, researching info for school and social networking. Let me add that I'm not a gamer, I don't download on this PC or anything else. Yet, it CONSTANTLY freezes, crashes (no matter which search engine I am on) and takes forever for the words I type to appear. The mouse pad only works when it wants which might have something to do with the stupid texture it. This is even when absolutely nothing is running as far as apps. The first month was great BUT this second month sort of has me wanting to throw this thing against a window! Since I have the deluxe plan, when I come into town (the nearest Best Buy is over 50 miles away) I will give them a chance to correct this piece of junk! However, to fix it I will have to be without a laptop for at least a week and then have to drive another 50 miles to pick it back up! The point of this whole review is to stress that I'm disappointed and if you don't want to waste time being disappointed as well...pick another laptop because this is not the one!

Had this laptop for a few months now. I wanted an inexpensive laptop as a backup for our desktop that is not always reliable. Saw this Lenovo for $379 and got it. I've been very happy. My son uses it all the time for gaming. Screen resolution is fantastic. It could be a little faster at start up and the battery life isn't great but since I don't travel with it that doesn't matter very much. We don't even use the desktop anymore.
