High performance laptop w/high def touch screen

    |
    Posted .

The 4 out of 5 convenience rating because... The only drawback for this laptop is that there isn't a cd/dvd drive but this is a common theme for the "ultrabook" class laptops. If you have existing applications on disk that you want to install, I had to make an ISO copy of the disk on another computer, store it to a usb harddrive, install a virtual drive on the laptop, and mount the ISO to the virtual drive. This allowed me to install my existing SW to the laptop. On the other hand, there are many apps now offered as electronic copies that can be downloaded directly from the internet. The 5 out of 5 ratings for "Value for Price", "Display", and "Performance" because... The laptop is a good performing I-7 laptop. I'm a SW Engineer for a Fortune 500 Company and this laptop easily outperforms the "high performing" I-7 laptop I was provided 6 months ago. It has a high definition (1080p) touch screen with high contrast and vivid color. It utilizes the Intel 4000 HD graphics on the CPU. The CPU graphics appear to perform decent when my kids play video games and i set the graphics on the higher settings (i.e. high def or near high def). All work laptops i've used in the past have had poor performing touch pads and i preferred using a mouse. This computer's touch pad works better than most and I have no problem using the touch pad for most tasks. Obviously with Windows 8 and the touchscreen there is much less need for the touch pad. The illuminated keyboard is nicely fit into the laptop and the illumination can be disabled to conserve battery life. The sound is not spectacular but isn't too bad for a thin 5lb laptop. I haven't tested the battery life as it generally doesn't get more than 3 hours of use at a time. The fit and finish is second to none with the aluminum case. Finally, I spent a few weeks looking for a "ultra book" (stated loosely as this ultra book has a 15.4" screen and around 5lbs) with a 1080p touch screen and I-7 processor and this is the only one I could find in the $800 range but don't let the lower than normal price fool you, this is a great notebook.

    Affordable, stylish, powerful

The Lenovo U530 Touchscreen Laptop is a great machine that balances beautiful craftsmanship and surprising power into an affordable ultrabook. The machine is large but slim and light; it has a great minimalist design with sensible backlit keys and ports placement; and underneath it has the standard 8 GB of RAM, acceptable 500 GB of memory, and a solid 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7-4500 processor -- fancy words that mean the computer will run smoothly out of the box. The touchscreen works great with Windows 8.1 (free upgrade with purchase). And I specifically wanted a 15.6" laptop as a desktop replacement that had a numberpad, and this machine provides that. Finally, startup takes only a few seconds, which is a definite plus. Some small issues include the reflective, glossy screen-glare at some viewing angles and a very sensitive touchpad that sometimes catches the side of your hand -- these are issues that can be remedied with a matte screen protector (which I would buy anyway to protect the screen from fingerprints) and a little touchpad settings configuration. Also, the keyboard does take some getting used to -- this user is more familiar with the larger Mac, Dell, and Logitech keyboards of the world -- but it's something easily adaptable. A bigger concern is the battery life is subpar for the price point. However, as this machine is more of a desktop replacement rather than a truly mobile PC, it's unlikely that I will be far from the included power adapter for longer than the 6-7 hour battery life. If you want a sleek and surprisingly powerful desktop replacement ultrabook, I recommend the Lenovo U530.

Great laptop to carry for work

    Posted .

Bought this in Best Buy (after trying many many laptops) - does not correspond with the models on the Lenovo site. Looked for a comfortable laptop for work (office, adobe, internet, skype). Specs: 4th gen i7 with 8gb ram and 500gb hd + flash ssd and full HD 15 inch multitouch screen. Advantages: Quiet. Cool. even after prolonged use. Battery lasts a lot – I reached ~5 hours of use and still had battery left for more hours. Lightning fast and boots fast - although if you work with several illustrator and photoshop files in parallel it would slow down a bit. It is relatively light to carry around considering it is a 15 inch - I carry it to work everyday on a bus and it doesn't bother me. Screen is great. touch response on screen - excellent. Build of the computer is great - looks durable. The touchpad is awesome! works like a charm. I cant really comment on sound - it seems ok but not as good as higher end laptops. through earphones you hear great though. wifi is excellent. camera is excellent too. full keyboard with numpad - great. the design of the laptop is amazing and very elegant The price was great for the specs u get - 830$ not including tax, and performance + appearance that to me are much more than the average mac which costs twice as much. also, you can upgrade the computer if you want - change to an ssd or increase memory, after you purchase it - at least this is what Lenovo claims. Cons: The keyboard is not that comfortable, to me at least. The feedback from the keys is not optimal, and if you miss the center of the keys even by a bit during fast typing they might not be pressed - leads to more mistakes. However once you get used to it its not that bad and actually has other advantages: the keys are backlit, quiet and only need to be pressed softly to respond... this point annoyed me so much that I considered returning the laptop, BUT, after I got used to it I type much faster and it is a very small compromise after all. Only one usb3, no vga connection only hdmi (needs adapter for projectors) I recommend this to anyone, just make sure the keyboard is good for you - try it in the store before you buy.

Best laptop for Work and Mobility - Lenovo U530

    Posted .

I already have Apple Mac Pro, also a high-end HP Pavillion dv7 (windows 7) computer used by my family members. I recently started travelling and needed a laptop. I was looking for: Performance, Light Weight, decent screen size to be productive at work, good key-board, and modern looks and design. I GOT EVERYTHING I NEEDED. This should be a BLOCK BUSTER. Very sleek design, Apple like feeling when you hold it with black lit keyboard. Thanks Lenova for bringing such joy and happiness. The only thing I could wish is a better camera (its not that great), and better graphics/display. I wish this can be improved by upgrading some kind of software in future still using the same hardware. I did lots of research spent a week every evening in Best Buy examining every laptop in detail, and reading all the reviews and research on internet. The effort was worth, I finally found what I wanted. Thanks to BestBuy staff (Whitehall, PA) very helpful and supportive. Thanks to Lenovo for such wonderful product at a price affordable Thanks to Microsoft Windows 8.1, which took away 99% of the Windows 8.0 problems. Tip: The first thing you do is Update to Windows 8.1 its free, it will take most of the Windows 8 problems.

    PERFECT

The first thing I noticed when I took this out of the box was the build quality and feel of it is just so sleek and solid. The style has a fairly professional look to it which is also nice. The speed on this thing is extremely fast and fluid as to be expected with the hardware included. Also as a side note, this laptop does have an intergrated 16 Gig Solid state drive which makes boot time super fast. This is my first computer with windows 8, and so far it is definitely a learning curve, but the touch screen on this makes it much easier. The feel of the keyboard is very nice, pretty snappy, relatively low key travel, and the back lit keyboard is AWESOME. My previous laptop did not have the back lit keyboard and it was always an inconvenience. Buy this if you want a stylish, well built, fast, light, all around fantastic laptop.

    Amazing 15" Laptop

    Posted .

This is great PC overall. As someone who uses both Mac and PC products this is an amazing computer when compared to other products out there. For around $800 from Best Buy you get an extremely portable computer with amazing battery life and performance (a similar model on the lenovo website retails for around $1000). The touch screen is a great addition for times when you need it. The trackpad is really well made and is up there with type of track pad you would find on a macbook. The only 2 things I would change on this PC is I would have preferred an IPS screen, and it would be nice to ship with Windows 8.1. Windows 8.1 is vastly improved over 8.0. The 8.1 upgrade is free for this computer, you just have to download it when you get home (but it would have been nice to not have to do this). If you looking for a new computer and want something similar to a 15" Macbook Pro Retina Display (for less then 1/2 the price), or are looking for a bigger ultra portable ... you should definitely take a look at this computer.

    Great bang for the buck

I was looking for a ultrabook to replace a 3 year old sony laptop. I loved the Sony so I wasn't in a rush and spent months looking for an ultrabook that gave me the most bang for my buck. I love the Lenovo ideapad hardware. I"ve seen some reviews complain that this device is "heavy" but I'd tell you that it just feels SOLID or STURDY. But it is my no mean heavy. I love it. I'm not a Windows 8 fan but this ultrabook performed GREAT right out of the box. Set-up was fast and easy. The touch screen is very responsive. My only desire is that this would have a large solid state drive. But regardless of manufacturer, the price/value point is a few years away. When Best Buy put it on sale on black Monday, my search ended and I got my new ultrabook!

    Solid Performer

I see a lot of unfair criticism aimed at this laptop's display because, "the blacks look gray, too bright..." etc. Yes, when you initially pull it out of the box brand-new, the factory settings for color/contrast/brightness are skewed toward being bright. Lenovo (wisely) allows users to adjust all these parameters for individual preference. It took about 10 minutes to adjust. There is a fairly extensive set-up Lenovo will walk you thru, step-by-step, to calibrate color, contrast and brightness. Mine is absolutely perfect now that I've set it up. Otherwise, this laptop is typical Lenovo - durable, easy to use, and fast enough for even the most demanding multi-tasking. I've been using Lenovo Thinkpads for business for several years but, this is the first Lenovo 'Ideapad' I have ever bought for myself. Does anyone make a better laptop keyboard? Not in my experience. My hands are not that large, though. I could see where the keyboard might be a tad small if you have hands the size of oven mitts. I'm also finding Windows 8.1 remarkably easy to learn and very intuitive. I love the Start page where I can organize all my 'hubs' based on preference/frequency of use. Rumors that Windows 8 is a pain in the butt appear to be greatly exaggerated. I'm gradually working myself into learning all the touch-screen functionality that this laptop offers but, I'm having too much fun at the moment!

Overall good value for $, but Battery life horribl

    Posted .

This is a good buy for the price, when I bought it this was just under $800 ($799.99 to be exact). I really wish I could have loved this ultrabook, but it simply did not fit my requirements and had to be returned. I was in the market for an ultrabook with at least 3 usb ports, touchscreen capability, 6 GB and higher RAM, at least a Core I5 Haswell processor and LONG battery life (>5hrs) within $900. Lenovo, BestBuy and other unofficial laptop review websites have rated this ultrabook as having a battery runtime of at least 7hr +, but my experience was just under 4 hrs. Heres a almost detailed review- Looks and Size- A 15.6 " ultrabook (No DVD/CD drive), weighing around 5.1lbs and looks like a MacBook Air. The construction and design screams PREMIUM, silver MacBook Air type of finish on the outside and a nice premium look black finish on the inside. Display- Full HD 1920 x 1080 display, of course it’s a Full HD display and was quite good, but compared to the display on the Asus Q501LA-BBI5T03, Lenovo had nothing on Asus’s IPS Display. Audio- The speakers were surprisingly good for an ultrabook, you can’t’ blast music through these speakers, but you can get some good clarity, loud enough music to entertain you while you work on your projects. Dolby's DTS Studio Sound program lets you add bass boost and surround sound, as well as control your device's output with an equalizer. Keyboard and Touchpad- now I’ve read several reviews of people having issues with the touchpad (jumpy etc.), but I never had any of those issues. The keyboard is backlit and the settings can be adjusted, I did find it a little awkward typing on that keyboard. I think they did a poor job in the keyboard’s design the touchpad covers more than half of the lower part of the laptop and the keyboard is kind of constrained to the remaining (< than half) space on the top. WIFI- I never had any issues with this, no dropped signals etc. Heat- this is one area where the laptop SHINES, after hours of using the laptop and even leaving it on the entire night (once) running diagnostics, I could not feel any heat emitting from the ultrabook. Webcam- Horrible (as expected), the problem with the 15.6 laptops is that they stretch the camera and images to fit the screen and the already low res webcam provides a much worse image quality from all the stretching. Ports- 1 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0, (wish they were all 3.0’s), HDMI out, Ethernet, SD /MMC slot, Kensington lock port, and (unique) power cord port. Performance- with the Haswell core I7 and 8GB Ram, I never experienced any freezing, or stalling. It was super quick to start and super smooth in its operations. Less than 20 seconds of startup time. Graphics- quite good, I did not test it for gaming or anything. Excellent for Netflix at least. Battery Life- The BIGGEST Disappointment, well not simply because of its performance but mainly due to the expectation from all the inflated battery estimates given on various official and unofficial websites. Lenovo claims 10 hrs. of idle (nonrealistic) and at least 6 hrs.of full hd playback, and BestBuy rated it as 8+ hrs. of battery life. With all these estimates I was expecting at least 5-6 hrs. of battery life, but the reality was close to 3.5 hrs. Now I was basically using it for web browsing, listening to some Pandora, working on some word documents, with brightness set at 70% and Bluetooth , Intel Smart connect and other battery draining programs switched off. This was simply not acceptable, talking to the Lenovo customer support was no better, they simply tried to convince me that 6 hrs. mentioned even on their website is simply not achievable realistically and 3-4 hrs. is the best I could expect. Verdict- If the battery life and the availability of only 1 USB 3.0 port is not an issue, please go for this Ultrabook, it’s a good value for money (otherwise). Haswell core I7 and 8GB RAM will get you through even the most demanding programs without freezing up on you, and touchscreen response was phenomenal. BestBuy Experience- 5/5 I don’t usually shop at brick and mortar shops anymore, thanks to Amazon Prime membership but my experience with BestBuy for this purchase was awesome. They were very courteous with not only the sales side but also when I wanted to return this ultrabook for a full refund, I was expecting a lot more hassle, but they were simply the best and stood by their promise and reputation. In future BestBuy would always be the place where I do my electronics shopping.

    Lenovo U530 for business applications

    |
    Posted .

First purchase of a Windows 8 machine for our business and quite a learning experience. Number 1 grip is the machine is purchased well after the Windows 8.1 upgrade release and it was manufacturered after the date, but it came with the original Windows 8. After 3.2Gb of downloads later and a difficult/non-intuitive process, we had 8.1. BUT, not a professional version. That requires an additional Key Code at additional costs! Machine could not read any other mahcines on the network domain without it. Lenovo applications are disconnected after the 8.1 upgrade. Wireless card seems to have random problems that have yet to be fixed by multiple software patches. 8gb of memory on a Win XP or Win7 machine would have been MORE than enough, but Win8.1 eats it up. 8Gb of memory is sufficient, but go for more if you can. Touchscreens for a laptop just don't make sense unless it can become a tablet. An expense that is unnecessary. Ensure your network servers and active directory are ready to support Windows 8 computers. It took 2 days of updates and configuring before the user could use this mahcine, it is not out of the box ready for businesses. But for home users, a good buy.

My first laptop! I like the long battery life with this laptop. I also like how fast it starts up, that would be because of the hybrid hard drive. What I'm having difficulty getting used to is the laptop keyboard. Sometimes it seems like a space appears where I didn't put one, or I'm hitting the wrong key or not hitting the right key. I hope that more time spent with it will cure this. Since I'm used to using a tablet, using Windows 8.1 is no biggie. Finding apps that I actually want to use is another story, but they'll come with time.I also like that you can shut off the mouse touch area of the keyboard so that when you're typing you don't accidentally make it do something you didn't want. Overall an excellent computer. JMHO

    Good Money Well Spent

As an upgrade to my old fallen apart Toshiba, I finally convinced myself to buy this Lenovo ultrabook. Although at first, it may seem to large as an ultrabook it isn't too difficult to carry around, and with such an amazing battery life, it was and is a good purchase. Although it can't match any gaming laptops performance, it's not that behind None of the programs, ie Photoshop or Vegas have even caused a slight hitch with this ultrabook. Hopefully, it'll last for the next few years. Only issue I have with it so far is it easily catches fingerprints on the inside. Apart from that I love this machine.

Needed a new laptop to work on anything from very formula intensive spreadsheets to basic browsing and watching movies. Laptop screen is great size to view anything that comes my way. Watching movies is not a problem and projecting them to a big screen tv or projector give great picture. Keyboard layout and touchpad gives plenty of room even for someone with large hands. The touch screen is a great feature for some easy browsing. Only rela negatives I have are the screen is very reflective and smudges very easily. I spend a lt of time just cleaning it. The other issue is the "small" 500 GB HD. I would have preferred 1 TB or more for something wit hthis processor and memory. Easy to fill wit ha collection of movies, music and pictures - doesn't leave a lot of space for other files. All in All I would definitely buy this again.

The computer is fantastic based on screen resolution, fast boot-up, the not super sensitive mouse pad, or touchscreen. Games like League of Legends look great! As a college student, the computer works perfectly to fit the social media, gaming, homework, watching movies, etc However, my biggest complaints are the speakers on the bottom, which makes the sound a bit of getting used to. And for the price, I wish they would have included a DVD or Blue-Ray Player. It took me 4 months to settle on a computer, I chose this computer over the HP Envy. If you are interested in saving $50, sign up for the College coupons on Best Buy and to save more money, join the rewards program. Sometimes they will double your points, so you can save up to $75 through points. They will most likely not as you to join the rewards program, so do not forget!

Great help from the Best Buy team lead me to the computer. It is so light weight I can carry it anywhere I'm sitting. So easy to start up and get to my email or surfing the net. Lots of apps already loaded. Larger screen makes watching movies or editing pictures good. Webcam and microphone makes Skype easy to start up . Touch screen makes navigation quick. Like to use old style desktop screen sometimes too. This was a great upgrade from my 2006 HP.

    Happy with my Lenovo

After much research, I settled on this system and have not regretted it. This Lenovo is fast and easy to navigate. Touch screen is responsive; touchpad is not the greatest, so I use a mouse most of the time. Case is thin and sleek and is a little lighter than others I looked at with similar configuration. Needed to clean up some of the software installed and still finding some I can get rid of (seems to be the case with most systems today.) Installing software is a breeze and fast. Sound quality could be better, but that can be resolved with some speakers. Some reviewers share an issue with the keyboard, but I don't have a problem with it. So far, so good for this online teacher!

overall I do like the laptop. I bought it because I am a casual user and I had heard good things about this laptop. For what I use it for It works just fine for me. I do like that it is a touchscreen also that was another factor. Lenovo is supposed to be a good product since we have them at work so that was another influence. I do like the keyboard that I am able to bring up whenever I need to use it. That is a great addition to have.
