I really liked this model, Great Price, and Great Graphics and speed for gaming. Though I should of seen the Red Flags in beginning. About 5 weeks after purchasing the U530, the touch screen wouldn't respond to commands, so I returned it for another. Then maybe 4 years later the Backlight Touch Display stopped working, making it impossible to use, and since then I can't find the replacement part to fix it. Geek Squad wouldn't even try an fix it, let alone guarantee it would work and continue to work, Lenovo quality needs to be better.

It is easy to use, great picture quality, very fast, LOVE windows 8, plus I am an engineering major and it has done everything I have needed it too. The i7 processor is what sold me on this laptop and it is why I am keeping it!

    Hinge broke after 7 months

    Posted .

This worked OK for seven months. Then I went to close it one day, and the hinge wen't "crunch!" Now I can't even close it. Since it's still under warranty, I contacted Lenovo. They said a broken hinge is "accidental damage" and REFUSED to cover it under warranty. This computer has had good care, rarely left my living room, and never been dropped. It's just either a defective hinge or an extremely flimsy one. They expected my to ship it to Texas (even though it won't close!) and pay for the repair. My options now are to pay for repairs (which I will NOT do through Lenovo) or use it as a desktop and never be able to close it to take it anywhere. What a waste. i will never buy another Lenovo product if they will not stand behind their product.

    Stuck Hinge Makes Screen Break

    Posted .

There is a major issue with Lenovo models. The hinges on my laptop locked up and when I went to open it (Only 4 months old), the screen shattered and it would not open at all. This appears to be a common issue with Lenovo (Check the forums for "Hinge Issues"). I took it in and the Geek Squad said it would be 2-4 weeks before it is returned to me. I am a student and am now without a laptop...I will never buy a laptop from best buy again and will not buy a Lenovo. They are usually my go to for all things electronics, but I think I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Hinge broke in less than a year and a half

DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP. Unfortunately I bought two for my sons for college. The hinge broke on one of them after less than 18 months. Apparently this is a common problem. Worst laptop ever bought. JUNK!!!

I'm a researcher in Clinical Informatics as well as Atmospheric/Oceanic Sciences. I do lots of data mining and visualization of GIGANTIC data sets which can be handled just fine with this machine. I love my new laptop. I came to Best Buy looking for the state-of-the-art 15" Dell Precision but it's not carried there (costs almost $1000 more than this one) and I'm glad I was open to the Lenovo.. It is incredible and its specs are comparable, if not some even better (resolution, 1TB hard drive!!) than my original choice and best yet, much cheaper. Im in love.

Overall, a great laptop for the price

    Posted .

I haven't had the laptop for too long yet (3 days so far), but so far, I like it. I've had my old laptop for ~4 years now, and it still runs great, but its slowing down now. This one is pretty fast even though it has a terabyte of storage. Pros: 1. LOTS of space: 1 terabyte. Games, Movies, Shows!!! 2. Super quick and responsive. My old laptop takes around 2 minutes+ to start, but this one doesn't even take a minute. Its great. Also, unlike my old laptop which takes time to load after waking it up from sleep, this one takes NO TIME AT ALL. 3. Lenovo apps and support: So the laptop comes with apps from lenovo made to enhance your experience with the laptop. Stuff like free cloud storage, motion control, etc. Also, it comes with the lenovo support app which has informative how-to's and FAQ and other lenovo support. 4. SUPER responsive touchscreen: Ok, maybe this isn't that big of a deal since touchscreens are always very responsive, but it blows my mind how we can have the best of two worlds -tablet and laptop- on one device. Cons: 1. The keyboard is really flat and even everywhere. I'm used to keys that are a bit raised, but with this laptop the keys are a bit too flat and I have a lot of typos because of it. 2. Sound: So I played a bunch of music from YouTube to test out the loudness. I played the same songs on my old laptop. Lo-and-behold, my old laptop completely destroyed this one. I checked out the loudness settings and there is a button to tun on/off Dolby Digital Plus, now all that does is this: ON: you get the max loudness, which isn't much to begin with. OFF: the sound becomes even less loud. I may not be super knowledgeable about this stuff, so there may be something I may be missing out on, but seriously, the loudness does suck.

Well constructed, well equipped full-size laptop.

The U530 is advertised by Lenovo as a an ultrabooks, however the size and thickness do not meet the general requirements of other conventional ultrabooks. Don't get me wrong, this computer packs a whopping punch of speed and tasking ability, but the outside dimensions and weight hold it back from the ultrabook class. Now, some about what I love about this computer: The 1080 resolution is gorgeous. I've set the UI scaling to 100% (default 125%) to increase desktop space and I could never go back. The hybrid drive boots fast and sleep resume really is around 2 seconds. The keyboard is laid out very well and the keyboard backlight is very good. The touchscreen is smooth and accurate (but after the novelty wore off I found I don't use it hardly ever) the brushed aluminum case it stiff and reassuring. Graphics benchmarks are a bit above average for computers in this price range. Photoshop renders large images fast and games like CoD MW3 and Skyrim run smooth at maxed settings. I only wish that there was a non-touch model because I don't feel price could have been dropped with a regular IPS display.

    Good performance laptop

Handles all my games smoothley, keyboard is a little hard to get used to, and I wish it came with a free Microsoft Office package for all the money I paid for this thing...otherwise it's kind of useless for my schooling needs. It gets good internet speed if I'm close to the modem, but so far if I'm even a little ways away from it then my internet is slower than slow. This may or may not be the computer, but my older laptop connects a lot better to the internet from further away. I also think that sometimes it seems to take longer for it to log in if I don't have an internet connection, seems a little strange to me. So far I've only had this laptop about 3 weeks at the time I write this, and overall I like it.

    Daughter's college laptop

    |
    Posted .

We bought this laptop for our daughter to use in college studying aerospace engineering. It has the I7 Intel processor with a 1tb hard drive and 8gb of ram with a dedicated video card. It more than met the minimum requirements for the program she's in and will hopefully last the entire time that she's in college. Windows 8 takes some getting used to but comes pre-loaded with much bloatware that we've had to go through and get rid of where we could. It also does not have an optical drive, which was advertised in the BB ad, so we had to get and external drive in order to watch DVD in her dorm.

Great Specs but Falls Short in Quality

    Posted .

I had to purchase 3 of these laptops just to get 1 that worked, as each one had small problems with them. This should have been a flag but the specs on this laptop were hard to beat for the money. Most laptops with comparable features cost over a $1000. A hi res screen, dedicated graphics card, hybrid drive, backlit keyboard, touch screen and ultra book size. Here is where things went wrong with the machines I had. Each one had a terrible refresh rate issue on the right side of the screen. You can visible see the refresh lines when the screen has a dark background. This was especially annoying when using Photoshop to edit images and pictures. The final laptop I kept started to develop even more problems over time, the fan started to grind. I even tried to clean it but that did not work. The left click on the mouse was off, meaning you have to click in the far left corner of the button otherwise it would right click. I use a Logitech M705 mouse most of the time but when on the go it isn't always convenient to pull a mouse out. Then the final thing was the hinges on the laptop. The right hinge was loose and it was causing the bottom of the screen to catch case of the laptop. This was on the verge of breaking so I finally got fed up and sent the laptop off to Lenovo. So my story with Lenovo goes as this. They have been helpful but this has disrupted my job to send off a laptop that is a few months old. Owning several Dell's, Toshiba's, and HP's I have never had to send them off. But already this one had to go in for service, only to find out they were calling the hinge and screen bezel problem a customer abuse and wouldn't cover it. I was shocked, so luckily I took photos and videos of the problem and informed the customer service rep that the computer is in prefect condition and to have someone closely look at it. And if they couldn't understand the problem I would send photos and video of it. They promptly changed their stance and decided it was a manufacture issue, however the part is on backorder and now I sit here and wait. They have had the laptop a week now and it could take another 5 days. All in all it has been a serious headache, but I do appreciate Lenovo having a well trained CS staff. So the question is, would I buy another one? Maybe, but I would recommend the service plan just in case. I will purchase one through Lenovo once I get my computer back and see it is in working condition. It is very hard to beat the specs and size of this laptop. Would I recommend to a friend? Maybe. Depends on whether they are savvy enough to figure out what needs to be repaired if the laptop breaks or whether they need an i7 processor with a dedicated graphics card. Most of my friends dont need that, so it would be a no. This review is a bit negative towards the unit but all in all it is a great laptop. Aside from the few issues, if Lenovo can fix them, I will be very happy with the unit. Especially once I replace the current drive with a SSD from Samsung. Laptops are a manufactured product in the masses, so for everyone to be in perfect condition is pretty unrealistic. I hope everyone does their research and finds the right laptop for what they need.

    Surprisingly very good at everything

I've had it for about two weeks now, and it's very good. As it should be, considering the dam thing was $900 dollars. For that, you get a snazzy (but quickly dirtied)-looking laptop with i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M, 1TB of space, a 17" screen, and a numpad. The keys are unresponsive to anything but a press on their dead center, which is understandable. I don't understand why, but they must have a reason. The arrow keys, the 1 & 2 numpad keys, and the shift and control keys are too dam close. You might be trying to move your cursor to the right in a document, and find out that there is now a bunch of 0s splitting the word in half. Or you might be moving up, and create a new row. Or you might be moving left, and find that you were pressing the control key for 5 seconds... I've filled up about a quarter of the TB already, and it's still as fast as when I first used it. That brings me to the 8gigs of memory. I have lots of apps on Google Chrome: for school, work, and play. Alone, they use about 1/3 of the memory. Computer companies need to realize that more is the present. 4gigs of 8 can kill my speed if I open another memory intensive program, like say for example Outlook. That's about 6gigs right there. That's not including the needed computer processes. The GPU is where this computer really shines. It's able to run most games on med-high, as long as they don't have too much fire, smoke, and water (reflections). This is basically a mid-end gaming machine.

I've had issues in the past with other Best Buy laptops, but this one seems to be suiting the user (my wife) just fine. If I've got to use Windows 8.X I highly recommend a touch screen, and this one has one. Even though there's a traditional HDD, it doesn't seem to slow the i7 with 8GB RAM down which had been a problem with other machines. The Nvidia GPU + this screen combo is clear and colorful, the keyboard is comfortable and the machine is compact enough. HDMI and USB 3.1 are also nice on this machine and the power cord connection is solid, not cheap like some others. If I ever have to get into any of the components though, I don't know if I'll be able since it looks like they took a bit of an Apple approach with their uni-design. (I'm sure that's not actually the name). Overall, if you're in the market for a work-horse that travels, I highly recommend this one out of the Best Buy options.

    Fancy Laptop

We bought this computer to use at work conferences to save money on renting them from venues. It has paid for itself already. It is exactly what we were looking for. Functional, and seemingly upscale. We are still working on learning to master the latest version of Windows, as none of the rest of our corporate computers have it. But this is a great laptop. We really enjoy the touch screen, and how easy it is to do things.

I am loving my new Lenovo laptop! I did a lot of research and was very pleased with the Best Buy price and the quality of the Lenovo product. I was replacing an ancient Dell desktop, and as you can guess, the difference in processing speed is amazing! I plan to use this laptop As a desktop the majority of the time. It has a beautiful screen image, nice comfortable keyboard, and great audio. I occasionally hit the screen key on the left side while typing, but I think with further use I can avoid it. I love the touchscreen and I am enjoying the many options of Windows 8.1. I was very pleased with my Best Buy experience and purchased the Geek squad package. I have Already used the tech-support several times and plan to continue to use it as needed in the future. It is well worth the price!

I bought this computer to replace another gaming computer that passed away. I wanted a 17" once again, but they were not affordable, and too heavy, The good thing is this one is lighter, and is very sleek looking. The performance on the game is great. but the rest of it is hard to tell but of having to deal with Windows 8.1

I have had this laptop for about two weeks. It has taken a little time to get used to using Windows 8, but once you figure that out, it's a good machine. I like the touch screen option and the backlit keys are great for low or dark light. It SSD is wonderful. This is my first SSD laptop and it's way better than anything else I've used. It's responsive, quick and efficient. So far I really like this laptop.

    Good Laptop for Student

Bought for my granddaughter for college. She needed a computer with the latest processor and at least 8GB RAM. This one also had 1 TB of storage. While the laptop is too big physically for me, my granddaughter likes it. It is fairly light-weigt given the size, though. We added Office 395 so she's ready for school now. The price was very reasonable given the technical aspects of the computer when compared with others. i've read that others have had issues with this laptop, but my granddaughter has not had any so far. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the laptop is large and I'm fairly convinced my granddaughter will wish she had a laptop which is smaller when she's carrying this one and her books around campus.

I've been looking for a gaming laptop for 2 months before I found this, it's ran everything I've thrown at it on moderate settings (obviously you have to go lower on expectations for laptop gaming) but the I7 processor and NVIDIA graphics card make this laptop overall very powerful for gaming on the go. And for around the $800-$900 range it can't be beat.

    Great Laptop For a Student

I am an incoming freshman and I recently purchased this laptop. It has a very used friendly and accurate touch screen and mouse pad. I love the large display. I have visual problems, but this computer comes with many effective accessibility options. I bought this laptop open box and it was worth it. There was nothing wrong with the computer other than some scuff marks and I saved a lot of money. I bought this laptop in store and the Best Buy blue shirts were very helpful. Overall a great laptop with high value and a great experience with Best Buy.
