A lot of bang for the buck!

    Posted .

I saw some bad reviews, but normally would expect the first few reviews of an item to express problems. In light of the negative reviews, I will address the negatives written by others. At least one mentioned bluetooth functionality. The specs on the site say that it is bluetooth enabled. I'm guessing that this is an error. The laptop does not appear to have bluetooth at all. Of course, this could be a problem if that was a selling point to a customer. I was not interested in bluetooth, but there is always the possibility to purchase for under $30 a bluetooth adapter to go into a USB port. I've used one in the past with excellent results. The other negative comments were related to wifi. I'm not clear if these reviewers installed Windows 8.1 on units that came with Windows 8. But my computer came with Windows 8.1 on it. I have had no connectivity issues, consistently get full bars and have yet to be knocked off, though it is not unusual to get knocked off wifi on occasion. Re Windows 8 and 8.1---I've been using Windows 8 on desktop computer for a year now, and upped to 8.1 when it became available. Windows 8 and 8.1 do make the touch screen devices workable. While I don't love Windows 8, I am very used to it, and any operating system issues should not be a reason to dislike a computer. Some can be back dated to Windows 7, and I guess if budget allows, there is always Mac. My last laptop was a more expensive Toshiba that flew. I foolishly sold the computer, leaving me with desktop. Budget did not allow me to buy a new laptop in same price range as the older one. I was hoping to find an affordable machine with a Core i5. All hope was lost until I saw this laptop. The terabyte hard drive is a plus, though that is what I have on my desktop, and I find that for my purposes, this is larger than I need. But for the price of the laptop, this is amazing. It bothered me that the laptop only came with 4 GB of RAM, actually more than enough for most people. My last laptop came with 6 that I increased to 8. Because of replacing the last laptop memory, I had a 2 GB DDR3 board that I saved. And luckily, the setup on this laptop has two memory slots, the top one being empty. So I simply added in the extra board, giving me 6 GB of RAM. Though I may increase later on, the increase of RAM by 50 percent surely will help if I find myself doing more heavy tasks on the computer. One thing to note is that unlike previous laptops I've owned, there is not a small section of the bottom of laptop to remove in order to add memory. the bottom is essentially one big piece, so everything is exposed when "opening" it, much like on a desktop computer. This is not a negative or a positive statement---only a statement to let buyers know in case they have not encountered this before. Now a simple list of pluses and minuses----first the pluses: good solid Intel Core i5 in a budget computer, huge hard drive, beautiful 15.6 inch screen, sound can be turned up painfully loud--louder than my previous laptops, 2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 (many machines have 2 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0). Also, charging cord fits in snugly and cannot spin around and loosen like the round peg styles do. Battery life is excellent for a laptop--lasts hours for me, and I use it heavily. Now the minuses: Laptop could have been made a little slimmer, perhaps somehow shaving a few ounces off the weight. It is not so easy, or I have not figured out an easy way, short of looking at battery indicator, to see when battery is fully charged. One more thing to note, this was obviously a special purchase item from Best Buy. A nearly identical machine at a competitor's store sells for way more. And my research before buying led me to article that although Best Buy is selling at $399, it was meant to be sold at $649. In summary, I'm guessing that many are drawn to this buy because it is rare to find a Core i5 machine at this price. I have not had connection issues that a few others have had. And although this is not a top of the line, Core i7 with 16 GB of RAM and a touchscreen, I find this machine to be an excellent product, especially for the price.

I waited all of November to get this laptop!

    Posted .

I bought this laptop on "Black Thursday" and have enjoyed it ever since! I'm coming from a Compaq Presario 3gb with AMD processor and 250gb hard drive. This laptop is wwwwwaaaaaayyyyy faster. I'm currently transferring my data from the old one to this one, using a 64 gb flash drive, and I'm experiencing no lack from this new one. Battery life at full charge says over 6 hours remaining and has been great! Also, don't judge the laptop based on your inexperience with Windows 8. The laptop is great! At first glance, it seems that Windows 8 is not as user-friendly as 7, but take your time to learn it, you'll find that it's almost as user-friendly as 7, once you discover where things are. Also, there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube for 8. I'm liking Windows 8. It's not as bad as people are saying. Just take the time and learn for yourself, just as you had to with all other Windows OS's. The I5 processor is quick! Speakers are great! Only small complaint is on the keyboard. I'm an Accountant, so I rely heavily on the side 10-key number pad. The 0 key is smaller than what I'm used to, so I find myself hitting the right arrow key often, when I'm trying to hit the 0. I'm sure I'll get used to hitting the 0 in no time though. Also, if I throw too many tasks at it, I notice that it becomes unresponsive for about 5-10 seconds, but starts right back up. I'm OK with that because I assume it's trying to tackle everything I'm throwing at it, as efficiently as possible. But, other than that, grab the laptop! You won't be disappointed! Just last week, this laptop was $650. You can't beat the price for this quality laptop with an I5 processor for $399. Great deal!

Lots of power for the price

    Posted .

I bought this g500 on Black Friday mainly for school, but I do play casual games now and then. It definitely has enough power for simple tasks. It opens Visual Studios quickly as well as Microsoft Office. Load time is quick on start up. Windows 8 is new to me, but unless you don't know how to use a computer, its easy to get a hang of. I mainly click the desktop button on the main windows 8 screen and use it like Windows 7. I've been able to connect and stay connect to WiFi. I haven't had it long enough for problems to occur, but there are two things I don't like about it, but not a deal breaker by any means. First the side numeric zero key is small and in an inconvenient location, like another reviewer has stated. It takes some getting used to. The biggest problem I have with the G500 is when I play games. It won't let you use the touch pad and keyboard at the same time. For example when playing Minecraft (Which the G500 plays at max settings smoothly) when I'm moving forward with the keys, it won't let me turn with the touchpad unless I let go of the keys. Fair to say it's the Synaptic touch pad that is the problem and not the Computer. I've downgraded the driver and turned off palm check (which is unavailable with the current driver). It made it 99% better, but the left button won't work yet when using the keypad. I'm sure its fixable with some searching on the web. Besides those two gripes this computer is pretty awesome for someone with a low budget.

This is a laptop even a dinosaur will enjoy.

According to my teenager I am a dinosaur. I have limited computer knowledge, my understanding of apps, social media and computer terminology is sketchy at best. When confronted with computer malfunctions and error messages I have mini panic attacks and retreat to the safety of my bedroom until my teen can sort out whatever damage I have instilled. Having said that this is the laptop for me. Easy to use, large display, usable keyboard, responsive mouse pad, quiet and has a dvd/cd drive which for this dinosaur is a necessity. It is not touchscreen but with the mouse pad and the two finger scrolling it is a breeze to navigate from page to page. It is super quiet, and the battery lasts longer than my phone which is so awesome! Now that I have told you about how sweet this laptop is the only thing to tarnish its halo would be that it drops the wifi connection periodically, not sure if that is the laptop or my wifi coverage, and it is not lightweight.

    no bluetooth as advertised

    Posted .

This is a great value for an entry level laptop, however it does not have bluetooth as advertised, thus I am only giving it 3 stars. I am irritated that I wasted so much time trying to get the bluetooth working. I brought it to best buy who replaced the laptop with a new one when they couldnt get bluetooth to work either and the wifi also stopped working while they were working on it. Ended up calling Lenovo to verify the specs and confirmed that it did not come with bluetooth. I was hoping Best Buy could install the hardware since another reviewer said they installed it for him. BB said they werent able to do that so I'm guessing they just installed a bluetooth adaptor for the other reviewer, which is fine except that it ties up one of your usb ports. I will keep this laptop and install an adaptor if I have to, but first I'm going to try contacting Lenova's warranty repair service and see if i cant get bluetooth hardware installed that way. Bluetooth is not working so they should fix it, right? Other than the bluetooth issue, this laptop has pretty much everything I was looking for. If you dont need the bluetooth, I would definately recommend this laptop. Oh, and one more small complaint. Cover seems to be made of cheap plastic and has a bumpy texture that picks up the oils from your fingers very easily.

excellent laptop with the exception of windows 8

    Posted .

this laptop was purchased to replace my tired dell dimension 3000 with windows xp. After a weekend of cursing and frustration,(and almost taking it back to the store), I slowly settled in to learning how to navigate around the obstacle that is, windows 8. In spite of Microsoft I managed to find a new program to get my email (no more outlook express), and set up the desktop to at least somewhat resemble a familiar computer environment.. Lastly thanks to windows 8 I had the motivation to wipe windows from my old dell and set up a Linux OS, which is turning out to be good alternative to windows.

    It's ok

Although I finally figured out the basics of Windows8 I still want to go back to 7. The laptop touchpad area is too sensitive and I've accidentally brushed it with my finger, sending me off to wherever my cursor happens to be. A good price but if I knew the operating system would work better with a touch screen, I would have gotten an HP instead. I'm also still trying to adjust to the position of the zero and delete keys next to each other on the 10 key number section on the right bottom of the keyboard

    Good, solid laptop

This is a fantastic laptop. Wish I knew that it came with an option for bluetooth... the one I bought did not have it. My fault for not looking, but make sure you double check that the G500 you're buying is the bluetooth one if you want it. Also, Windows 8 is a disaster. But, those two issues have nothing to do with the actual laptop itself... regarding the laptop, I couldn't be happier. Great performance for basic internet, office, etc. functionality. Can't say enough about the display... REALLY good!

    Too bad its windows 8

The PC itself is fine Lenovo is putting out a decent product. the fact I was forced to get the thing with windows 8 really hurts the overall experience. For some reason Microsoft forgot that there users actually like to be productive with their PCs. I can't see any corporation adopting windows 8. Just like none adopted Vista. For a phone or tablet window 8 is fine for a PC its a joke. Best Buy should allow the "downgrade" to 7 on purchases. will rethink a purchase from them in future for a PC.

Generally a great machine. OS is terrible.

    Posted .

Have had a few days to play with it and am overall pretty pleased with the machine. Messed around with Win 8 for about half an hour and decided Micorsoft made a bad decision in porting a Phone/Tablet user interface to a Laptop/Desktop. Wiped the Windows and installed Linux Mint which has a much more traditional user interface. Everything is good. All the ports, WIFI, worked as soon as the new OS was installed. So far, seems like a good machine (except for the Win 8, but an easy fix).

    Windows8 has got to go

I love this computer. It is fast, the 17" screen makes it easier to do my work. I really like it. The only thing I hate is Windows8. I am an engineer and can't intuitively find the things I need because they are not where they have always been. Once I figure out Windows 8, I am sure it will all fall into place. One thing that keeps happening is while I'm working, I somehow jump to other screens and I have to figure out how to get back to where I was - Very annoying and frustrating. This is just another Windows 8 thing. I wish I had the ability to go back to Windows 7.

    Great value!

This was a great value for the i5 processor and the terabyte of memory. When it was received, there were cosmetic scratches on the lid. As this was on online buy, it was taken back to a nearby brick and mortar store. It turned out this was a close-out item, and none were available in nearby stores. We were given a discount which made it an even better by. So far, the laptop has been great - no problems.

I purchased this as a Christmas present for our son for college. He loves it and has no issues at all. It's speed is excellent while very light weight. He loves the new windows 8 with all the app features like his phone that will match. The screen is not so clear if you are viewing it from the side or top but that's minor. Great laptop and exvellent value at the price we gave at Christmas $399

Good value for the price. Bought as a gift for the wife so I could get mine back. She does a lot of picture editing for scrapbooks and school stuff. Right size and features for basic use. Don't know about gaming and movie streaming, but probably not enough memory for high end there. Would buy again. Like Lenovo business and enterprise products, but first experience with off-the-shelf laptop.

    Excellent overall laptop

    Posted .

Got this laptop on Thanksgiving night. Decided to immediately upgrade the RAM to total 8gb of RAM, add MS office, get an external bluetooth adapter and get the full 3 year warranty...all said and done I was out the door for what comparable spec'd laptops go for but, with no warranty & no MS office. No issues setting anything up so far, wifi was instant, as was MS office, but I haven't attempted to use the bluetooth adapter with the bluetooth capable Samsung surround sound system yet Very well worth the money even if you don't upgrade the ram or adjust settings for better performance, but, if you do it'll be amazing. I'm coming from a 5-6 year old (middle of the line at the time) HP with an AMD processor & vista(worst operating system ever LOL)...Don't know the ram or hard drive specs on it but the lenovo blows it away in every aspect.

Great System, Great Processor, Great Value

This system has a smart dual-core, four-way processing performance. An Intel Turbo Boost Technology delivers dynamic extra power when you need it, while increasing energy efficiency when you don't. This is enough to want to own this system. Windows 8 is fine with me.

For the price to get i5 and lenovo was a steal. That is what I like about best buy door buster deals. This one I didn't have to wait in the queues and got it door delivered. The performance of the laptop is wonderful and good for beginners too. It works great for personal use, browsing, and even basic programing. All in all a great deal and great laptop.

I purchased this laptop during the thanks giving deal in replacement for my ASUS Q200E. I was looking for a good processor, having a bluetooth, and ample storage of hard disk. I was surprised with the Lenovo deals and consider to purchased it immediately. So far I am satisfied with the speed and power of the processor and have good display of the unit.

The battery charger failed within 2 weeks. Called service department and after trouble shooting problem sent out new charger using FED EX. Need to return failed charger but will use same box and a prepaid shipping label was included. The new charger works well and I am completely satisfied. However, I still hate Windows 8.x.
