So far has been very good.

    Posted .

My family needed a reliable computer so we took a gamble with the Lenovo IdeaCentre 720-18ASU. I was very interested in the hardware inside(Ryzen 7& RX560). The other reviews made me a skeptic but trying it out wouldnt be harmful as i can return it. Well, i have to say that i am quite pleased with this Desktop. It starts up pretty well without have a SSD installed. Its quiet and doesnt have an overall terrible design as a case. Note: this doesn't seem to be a good desktop to upgrade in the future. I would suggest looking for a different desktop i you are thinking of adding better ram or a better PSU. The forums lack most information as to what is upgradable and to what specific guidelines as to what is the appropriate components to use for upgrade. Overall, i think it was a good buy for the price of $664 USD. Of course, i may have to edit my post later in the future if anything bad were to happen during my time with it.

This computer is a good deal for the specs. The Ryzen 7 8-core, 16-thread processor is good for video editing applications. If you intend on using it for editing or gaming, plan on upgrading to an SSD from the slow HDD that it comes with.

    Good Price, Full of Problems

I picked this machine up one sale for a few reasons. Primarily, my previous Dell All-in-one just wasn't cutting it after all these years. With a Ryzen 7 Processor, dedicated graphics, and 16gb of ram, I expected a smooth user experience out of the box. However, I got nothing but problems from this machine. When I first got the machine, it was loaded with random Lenovo Programs that I never asked to have installed. Why do PC makers insist on loading junk I will absolutely never use? It's super annoying. Regardless, I was getting awful performance out of the machine, and only a restart would temporarily fix it. I ended up tracing the issue to a graphics card driver conflict, which required an entire afternoon to fix. I had to boot into safe mode and run a piece of software called Display Driver Uninstaller. A complete mess. The computer ran for awhile, and then BLACK SCREEN. Nothing but a black screen and a cursor. I didn't want to reinstall Lenovo's recovery, so I had to make CLEAN SLATE recovery USB on another PC and Completely Reinstall Windows to get this computer running again. After that it's nice and smooth and really a decent PC. Build quality is nothing to write home about compared to say, a Mac Mini, but this thing blows it out of the water in gaming performance. I appreciate that they kept the case easy to open, but there's not that much space in there for a graphics card upgrade down the line. Also there's definitely some obvious cost-cutting measures: low-wattage PSU, slow RAM, no SSD, junky peripherals (just give me better components, not $30 worth of crappy keyboard and mice) and limiting motherboard for upgrades. All in all, skip this model and go for something a little more expensive. Yeah, the processor is nice, but otherwise Lenovo kind of cheaped out on the components, and it's not really worth the trouble of having to replace that much. The return window closed before I had the chance to take the darn thing back. Overall, I'm not satisfied but kind of stuck here. Skip this one.

This computer benchmarks well and is a great value for what you get (on sale). However, it does have limited expandability with no extra SATA connections or available PCI slots.

    Great work horse!

I bought this computer because of the RAM and the fact that it was on sale. It has worked flawlessly. I run many programs at once and there does not seem to be a hitch. Granted, I am not a power user, but I utilize accessibility software along with the usual Windows stuff and need a good deal of memory and multi-tasking is a must. You just hook the stuff up and turn it on. It just works. It even found my wireless printer without even trying and no need to install a printer. Just find and print. This is the way computers should have been all along. The tower runs pretty silently and you only hear it work on a rare occasion; other than the fan that comes on at the first. Although this is meant for gamers, it works great for whatever. It did not even come with a lot of bloat ware. The stuff that was present was really easy to get rid of and I mean actually have it gone from the PC and not just hiding in obscure files. If you see this on sale and you need a good work horse, this is a good choice.

    Great Server

OK, most people buying a machine like this want it for gaming. I'm sure its a great gaming computer. I wouldn't know. I booted it up from an Ubuntu install CD and have it running as a server to crunch data for me. As a phd student, I needed a machine with multiple cores (this has 8) and threads (16) and a high enough processor speed to grind through my processing. I was up and running 6 hours later (after installing, patching, landing up my software, testing, moving data) and "thing1" is just flying through. My expected data completion is now 18 days instead of 44. If anyone at Lenovo want to donate a "thing2" and "thing3" - I have 2 more data sets to process as compare and contrast examples for my PhD - and I'd love to see how these work clustered. ;)

    Happy so far !

    Posted .

I purchased this just yesterday for an excellent price. The Lenovo was easy to set up and it is fast as can be. I am quite sure that this computer is going to serve me well for years to come. If there is anything that I can find fault with it would be the placement of the usb ports. There are only two on the back of the tower and four under the door that opens in the front. I would have liked to see only a couple in the front and the rest on the back panel. But this is not a deal breaker. I also like the built in AC speed wireless as now I no longer need to use an external usb device and that frees up another usb port for me. After searching around a bit for towers and laptops, i am glad that I ran across this Lenovo at one of our local Best Buy stores. I was in the right place at the right time it seems.

I bought this machine to be used as a dedicated streaming/editing machine. I feel this machine is a good bang for buck purchase. It has handled everything I have thrown at is so far. Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop. I am sure this machine would be great for gaming at decent settings too. Very happy with this little machine.

I actually use this machine as a home server. (Small gaming servers like Minecraft) but have opted to take it to LAN parties when I don't feel like moving my actual setup. Runs most games great like League or Fortnite. It will struggle with PUBG and a few other games that aren't optimized as well.

    Fast, Small and Quiet.

    Posted .

I bought this during Black Friday to replace a 2012 vintage machine. I mostly use it for processing photos (LR, PS) and videos. It's plenty fast enough for me with these jobs. Plus typical internet activity. Very quiet. Can't hear it running at all. The only cons and reason I didn't give it 5 stars is: 1. Only 2 SATA ports which limits expansion. The case has the room so what's up with that? Lenovo going cheap on the MB I assume. It does support an M.2 SSD drive up to 250 GB. However I installed a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB Internal SATA SSD and the power connector to the DVD drive required some simple modification to work on the SSD. Needless to say the SSD really boosted the computer's performance. However the DVD drive is no longer hooked up nor have I needed to use it. Reason for not installing an m.2 drive on a card is I cashed in BB points and got the Samsung for about $120 and it is twice the capacity of the M.2. 2. In five months of ownership it has frozen on me twice requiring a power off reset. Rainbow snow to black screen. Overall I'm pleased with the purchase and would buy again at the price I paid for it, $649. However I wouldn't pay much more than that considering the 2 flaws above.
