Customers are saying

The hardware in this is great and it is fast. However, I wanted to add a 2nd hard drive so attempted to take the bottom cover off and do it. I've done it before on my prior 17" laptops with no issues. The bottom cover is a nightmare to remove and re-install. It has 2 fastener screws and about 8 plastic snaps that are a slide/press fit. It took crowbar to remove it. Then when I attempted to put it back on I could not get the cover to slide back into place and broke many of the plastic fasteners. There is now a bulge in the bottom front of the case. I called Lenova "Ultimate" support and they said I needed to send it in and it probably wouldn't be covered under warranty because it doesn't cover physical damage of this type. I asked if I could buy a new cover and for $52 I can, but the part is out of stock until Dec 27. I'm sure it is out of stock because other people like me tried to install an additional hard drive or upgrade memory and had the same problem. The bottom line: This is not a user serviceable computer. Using plastic snap fit fasteners as the primary means of fastening a cover is not a good design. They should use screws with a few plastic guide pieces. Don't buy it if you ever want to add something to it or replace the battery.

DO NOT BUY THIS. I saved up months for this only to find out that the charger falls out constantly and this is an issue that when googled, reveals many many people have this issue and Lenovo knows this. Eventually it stops charging altogether. I can tell everyone who has written a review here has only had this laptop a few months at most. Please please. If you are struggling with money, do not waste it on this. I want to cry every day of my life over how crappy this laptop is. I regret trusting the Lenovo brand and I will tell anyone who will listen because they don’t give a single crap. Capitalism. Yay.

I just bought this computer two days ago and It stopped working after the second day. I was using it and updating the update (that take forever) and the computer restarted, which it does after an update. When it restarted a blue screen came on saying something went wrong and now it won’t start. I will be taking this back.

We are sorry to hear that you had issues with a Windows 10 update. It is possible that resetting the computer back to original factory settings may fix the issue. Since you can not boot the computer, this system is equipped with OneKey Recovery System. There is a very small pin hole on the right side of the device, right near the USB port on the right side of the device. You will need a pin to push this reset button. Plug the device in. Let the battery charge for about 15 minutes. Push the reset button. The system should boot to a choice screen where you can choose "Restore To Factory Default". Select this. It will delete everything from the hard drive except the original factory install of the operating system. You will need to reinstall all programs and files after the reset. If you don't have copies of the files, try to make one before you restore by selecting "Boot to desktop" and trying to back up your files. If the problem persists after the factory reset, we recommend you contact Legion Ultimate Support at: 888-278-9707. Lenovo

Purchased this laptop in July 2020 and in Nov 2020 it stopped charging. We bought this for my daughter for college. She bought a new charger that worked temporarily and now we are being told that a new motherboard may be needed. Customer service is saying that the port is connected to the motherboard so if there is something is wrong with the port it will NOT be covered by the warranty it is still under. We have to ship the computer in but they are pretty much saying this is a formality to say it will not be covered under warranty. We have had other brands of laptops and only bought new ones to upgrade not because of any damage. We will never buy Lenovo again. They don't make companies and customer service like they used to. Buyers beware

Screen flickers every 15-20 seconds, or just goes completely black and doesn't come back on. The speakers have constant static. I treat my computers very good and never abuse them. I RARELY ever play video games, nor do i go to any sketchy websites. I just needed a new computer for basic modern day task. I know i have a driver issue, but the lenovo website either doesnt have the drivers i need, or i am too dumb to find them.

Updated BIOS and all of a sudden, the machine is having screen issues. I see in the reviews others are having the same issue. After one year of ownership, it's time to look for something else. I used Lenovo before without issues. Now, will move over to ASUS more than likely.

I spent over $1300 on laptop which starting having pretty major issues with the motherboard after six months. NOT WORTH THE MONEY. I've had to spend a lot of money trying to get it repaired and am now being told I may have to replace the motherboard for around $600. The computer repairman says it appears to have been pretty poorly put together.

This is not a fault on Best Buy's end, but upon doing some research, all Lenovo laptops of this generation have an audio issue where the speakers and/or headphones completely fail after a few weeks tops. Lenovo is either unwilling or incompetent in fixing the problem; driver updates and reinstalls have done nothing. Save yourself the cash and don't buy this.

We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with the auto within your Lenovo Legion Y540-17 Gaming Laptop. First, be sure you have the latest version of Windows 10 on the computer, then, using the Lenovo Utility software, Lenovo Vantage, scan the computer and update all of the BIOS files and drivers up to this latest version of Windows 10. We recommend you use Lenovo Vantage to make sure you do not miss any critical update files. This system has Lenovo utilities installed to help maintain the health of the device and keep the operating system software up to date. Type "Lenovo Vantage" in the Cortana Search window (if Lenovo Vantage is not installed on your device, you can download the APP and install it now). Select Lenovo Vantage from the list. In the window that opens, click on "Health and Support". In the expanded menu, select "Hardware Scan" In the window that opens, select "Run Quick Tests". This will scan your entire system for errors. Follow any directions that may pop up. If the problem continues after this scan, now click on "System Update". First select Windows update from the menu. Scan your system to be sure you have the latest version of Windows 10. Once that scan is complete, select "Additional Updates". This will scan your device to be sure there are no new BIOS/Driver updates needed. Follow any instructions that may pop up. If the issue still continues after these updates, we recommend you call a Legion Gaming Expert at Legion Ultimate Support at: 888-278-9707. Lenovo

Great Laptop, Mid / Upper Range Gaming

What are the best things about this laptop? Runs fairly cool Excellent 144Mhz display Backlit keyboard Ample storage Picked this out for my Dad. He had an Alienware 17R2. Nice in its day, but the Legion has really been a nice upgrade for him. He games from his easy chair on a piece of plexi-glass. The legion has allowed him to shed 1.5lbs of weight. Great balance of performance and features, crisp sharp screen, above average refresh rates. Likes that the keyboard is backlit but not full on RGB. The Legion is affordable and has what it needs to deliver a solid mid to upper end gaming experience. One of the last few of its kind, Most manufacturers are using a large 7200RPM disk for the primary drive and m.2 for the second disk. Not this Legion, 1TB m.2 is primary NICE! Hey Lenovo, don't follow suit and continue putting spinning disks in your gaming laptops. You shouldn't have to purchase the 740 to get SSD as primary. This 540 is exceptional since it offers a primary SSD at this price point. Do not hesitate. This is a very nice gaming laptop that does not disappoint.
