I bought a Dell G3 during BF week for $694.00 after taxes. I decided to take a risk and exchange it for the Legion Y540 and boy am I glad I did for an extra $300.00 I went from 8gb to 16gb ram, 512gb to 1tb SSD, Intel i5 to Intel i7, 15.6 to 17.3 screen and 60hz to 144z. After playing on 144hz display I have to say I will not be going back to 60hz. I am absolutely enjoying this laptop a lot of people complain about it heating up. A simple fix is to undervolt which I have personally done bringing down the temp by 10+ degree and if you use a cooling pad that will take care of any heating issues. I also added an additional 2.5" 512gb SSD which is very easy to install although be careful when opening the laptop. It is a pull back and out cover thier are two half's one front cover and one back cover. I really enjoy the ports being in the back it's a very sleek looking laptop it is a bit heavy but what do you expect from a 17.3" laptop common sense guys. The number pad does take some getting used to other than that I am more than satisfied with my purchase highly recommend if you can get it on sale.

This computer is great for gaming and other general use. I got it for my son for school and for entertainment. He states that it has tons of storage and memory is great. The computer fan is at the bottom and is not that quite. If you don’t mind this, you’ll love this computer.

so first off, shipping was great. showed up before expected. The laptop is awesome even though it is my first gaming computer, it does run games pretty smoothly. this is the i7 9750h and gtx1660ti variant. my only gripe is that the laptop runs pretty hot on performance mode but runs much cooler on balanced mode but that slows the cpu down a bit. not sure if thats relatively normal on gaming laptops or not. but it seems like the cpu running at 94c on performance mode isnt too great. runs under 80c on balanced and still runs smoothly in games. other than that im pretty happy with my purchase. if anyone knows if gaming laptops running hot is normal let me know.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo Legion Y540-17 Gaming Laptop. Thanks to Legion Coldfront, heat—the nemesis of gaming performance—is a thing of the past. Coldfront brings the latest features a dual-channel thermal system can provide, including: individual CPU and GPU cooling, for cooler system temperatures; four thermal vents, for improved airflow; dedicated heat syncs, for cooler keyboard temperatures; and 70 individual fan blades per channel, to reduce system noise. With Lenovo Vantage featuring Legion Edge, you can spend less time tweaking your settings and more time playing with automated performance, cooling, and power control settings. If you have questions about the cooling settings of your Legion Y540-17, we recommend you contact a Legion Gaming Expert at Legion Utimate Support: 888-278-9707.

Short Battery Life for a 17” Laptop

Alright let’s start with the positive so the negatives later doesn’t scare you off.
As this is the 17.3” display size, the laptop size is obviously bigger with a bigger fan than the 15” so cooling is better since the surface area on the laptop itself is bigger. Even tho it’s bigger the thermals do still get high up there around 75-85 C when gaming w/o undervolting. Obviously the laptop is heavier than your average laptop but Lenovo has designed it to give you that skin look, but if you’re really looking at it you can tell it’s a thick laptop but from the front looking perspective it almost looks as thin as their 7i but then again it’s all about which angle you’re looking from.
The keyboard is single zone, white backlit only. Nice tactical keyboard, like the standard U shape keys that grub your fingers nicely with a nice click, with a full number pad on the right as well.
Surprisingly battery life is terrible on this laptop, sorry I just had to warn others, if you’re planning to use this for classes the entire day be prepared to carry around another 6 pound battery brick as the power lasts 2-3.5 hours when just browsing, Microsoft word, Netflix.
One other thing is, all the USB port connections are in the back of the laptop so that’s a nice touch. The display is a full IPS panel so the color is pretty accurate and the display itself gets pretty bright around 290 nits or 300 can’t remember for sure. Also Lenovo allows you to complete darken your screen when adjusting your brightness to the lowest setting.
Lenovo really needs to fix Lenovo Vantage, it is extremely buggy and makes their system run like it’s for a third grade student. It completely lacks any sort of fan and decibels control. Without undervolting it would be a disaster of a jet engine of heat and noise coming out from the back of the laptop. They really need to get a team together and try to fix their gaming system, I don’t even want to compare it but at least Asus Armoury Crate can allow you to control the GPU and CPU voltages so you can control the fan speed...

The 16gb memory, which is expandable to 32gb, excellent NVIDIA graphics card with no complaints. The 1TB Hard Drive is very nice size for storage. If you need more space, you can always add another secondary USB drive. The fastest startup for Windows 10 that I have personally seen. It seem to run so smoothly and I can multitask between program with no problems. It great for high demand graphics need and excellent sound from the Premium speaker system. I just love it - 5 Stars to Lenovo design team.

Amazing for current 1080p gaming on this HDR 1080p screen. I have played through Control (average 55-62 fps Max settings). I also installed the Xbox Gamepass App and played Forza Motorsport 7, Forza Horizon 4, and Metro Exodus. They all are averaging 60+fps games on Ultra settings. I will test Crysis 3 to see if we can do 1080p/ 144 fps with the 144hz screen.
The build quality of laptop is excellent with a white back-lit responsive keyboard. The 1080p HDR screen pops with color. The amount of ports on this system is impressive and other than 2 of the 3 USB 3.0 ports being on the sides all other ports are on the back. Unfortunately the camera is placed on the bottom of the screen for that never sought after chin video view. In the age of coronavirus quarantine and zoom/webex conferencing, this is a no-no.

My son and I picked this up as an open-box, and were initially blown away by the performance. (Heads-up tip, when we got it, it needed to be reset, the previous owner still had an administrator account on it. But, on Lenovo laptops, it's simple to reset, just push a pin in the side reset hole, and it starts the factory reset process! Easy day.) So, when we fired it up, we went straight to testing it out, and were pleased with the 144hz screen. It wasn't as bright as some others, but it was bright enough, with super smooth action. I also own a Dell 5300 Latitude with an i7 (8th gen) and 16gb of RAM that I use for work, so we decided to put them head to head with music encoding software and gaming. The Lenovo CLEARLY won! My Dell looked glitchy in game comparison, and music production was finished on the Lenovo while the Dell was hanging at 60%. Additionally, the ports on the back made for excellent cord management as we used the laptop on a desk with an additional monitor and gaming keyboard, mouse, and music production hardware. Overall, we were impressed... until... we tried to take it with us and use it away from a power outlet. Now, we know gaming laptops are not known for their battery power, but we had to turn off the graphics card and shut down all extra activity just to barely get 90 minutes of use out of the battery. This is clearly not as advertised/hoped for. Now it was an open-box, so maybe the previous owner had the same issue, or abused the battery very quickly, but we couldn't even simply finish a movie on a single charge (no gaming). Again, we know that battery life is a sacrifice in gaming laptops, but if I have to shut down all performance abilities and still only have minimum battery life, I'm not sure how much sense it makes. A desktop gamer PC and a Chromebook would have made better sense. Ultimately, my son returned it for something else with better battery life. Bottom line... if battery life is not as important, this is a GREAT gamer and/or audio/video production package! But, if you plan to ride in a car, and also use it to watch a movie on a trip, it will not be the best match. My vote, if you are always near an outlet, buy it. If you want to watch a movie in a car, either also buy a chromebook, or just buy something else. Cheers!

The Lenovo Legion Y540-17 Gaming Laptop, model number 81Q4008EUS, ships with a beautiful, IPS LCD w/LED Backlight (Anti-glare) screen, with a refresh rate of 144Hz, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (FHD) and a brightness level of 300 nits. The Lenovo Legion Y540-17 Gaming Laptop, model number 81Q4008EUS, ships with a 3CELL_57WH_INTERNAL, Lithium Polymer Battery, with a battery life of up to 5 hours, depending on the work the device is performing. If you are getting substantially less battery life, be sure any software you installed is compatible with Windows 10. Incompatible software will drain the battery at a faster rate. There is no need to install Microsoft Office software. The software is already part of the operating system, you just need to activate the software with a purchased product key. If you have installed a copy of Microsoft Office, this is conflicting with the existing copy on the system and this will slow your system down. If you have installed a 3rd party anti-virus program, be sure that Windows Defender is turned off and that the trial version of McAfee Anti-Virus software is uninstalled. There can only be one anti-virus program on the system. You may need to restore your system to original factory default settings if any of the programming errors have occurred. You can do that by typing "restore" in the Cortana search window. Just click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom left of your Windows 10 Desktop. Click on "Reset This PC" Then click on "Get Started" and follow the on screen directions to restore to factory defaults. If the problem persists, we recommend you contact Lenovo Tech Support at: 877-453-6686.

This Lenovo Y540 (17.3) is perfect. It handles everything I have been able to throw at it so far and stays relatively cooler than expected. The area right above the keyboard before you reach the screen gets the hottest, but that’s to be expected. I have not experienced any FPS drops due to temperature yet, and the 144hz screen is amazing.
I like that the color scheme is very minimal, but I wish that they implemented RGB backlighting to go a bit further with the personalization, if the user has a color scheme in mind with peripherals.
Other than that, it is a great all-around laptop that isn’t too bulky for a 17.3.
