It wasn't set up and put into use for nearly a month after purchase so I did not return it (Best Buy is a 180 mile round trip for me). It's irritating and I know that the scratch was there before i opened the box, but I am ignoring it.

Can someone suggest any tweaks for the text sharpness? (The OS is Windows 8.1)

Posted .Check your resolution settings for the monitor to be sure you are at the recommended level for the computer you are using. Secondly, check what the highest recommended resolution is for your computer, if it is 1366x768p or lower, this could be the cause of the blurry text. Also check the source of your text content. Try creating a document on your computer in a program like Word. The document will be displayed in the highest resolution your computer can display (assuming you have the resolution set to "recommended" settings"). The text should not be blurry. If you go online and the text is blurry, the web page resolution this the problem.
