A Solid Gaming Laptop that won't Break the Bank!

The Lenovo LOQ is a laptop that offers moderate gaming performance, with an overall package that provides lots of value for the consumer looking for a great deal. While this was far from the most powerful gaming laptop I have used, it still performed well when pushed to run demanding titles at reasonably high settings.
One of the first things that struck me about the LOQ was the build quality. I was a bit worried that for the price, this laptop would suffer from cheap materials or poor finishing. Instead, I was pleased that the laptop actually feels nicer than its price tag might suggest. Even though it’s mostly made of plastic, the plastic used feels about as premium as it gets when it comes to laptop builds. The hinge for the screen looks and feels good as well, and the keyboard is extremely nice for any laptop, not just the Lenovo LOQ.
Charging this 15.6” computer is done via a rather large charging brick, with a proprietary connector that slots into the back of the device. For connections, there are 3 USB-A ports, 1 USB-C port, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, an HDMI port, and an Ethernet port. There is also a switch on the right side of the laptop that allows you to disable the 1080p camera above the main screen if needed.
Speaking of the screen, this model boasts a 1920 x 1080 Full HD display that looks pretty nice while browsing the web, watching TV and movies, or playing games. This is no doubt helped by the 144 Hz refresh rate, which keeps fast-paced action on the screen looking smooth and sharp. While this isn't a 4K screen with a ridiculously high refresh rate, I found it to be just fine for the games I tested, and the content I watched.
Now when it comes to specs, this is one area where the LOQ sports some interesting choices, which I’m guessing were made to help keep the price of this laptop low. For a processor, it’s using an Intel 12th Generation Core i5. This laptop also has 12 gigs of RAM, instead of the (almost standard) 16 I expect with a gaming laptop. For graphics, the LOQ is using an Intel Arc A530M. And for storage space, this computer comes with a 512 GB SSD.
As for the processor, I think the i5 is perfectly fine for this laptop. While I wish the RAM was more than 12 gigs, I found it to be useable for my time spent testing out games. Something I do not like is the small SSD, as it meant I was only able to download 4 to 5 games at a time onto the hard drive. This isn't the end of the world, but it means that if you have a large library of modern titles, you might have to constantly delete and redownload to organize your collection.
Gaming tests-
Fallout 4: I was able to run Fallout 4 on the "High" graphics setting with absolutely no issues. I did play for a while on "Ultra" settings, but I notice framerate drops when in highly populated areas like Diamond City, and busier backdrops like downtown Boston. I wouldn't say it was unplayable on Ultra, I just preferred running it on High to keep it right at the sweet spot of graphics and performance. Even though this game is on the older side, it looked great running on the LOQ, and the visuals were crisp and detailed on the 15.6" screen.
Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas: Not much to say about these titles, as they ran on “Ultra” settings with no problems whatsoever.
Cyberpunk 2077: This game ran best on "High," with Ray Tracing turned off. Throughout my testing, I found that it ran somewhat smoothly on "Ultra" (no Ray Tracing) and "Low–Ray Tracing." There were some framerate drops on High, but these issues were more noticeable on Ultra and Low-Ray Tracing modes. Since this is probably the most graphically intense game I played on the LOQ, this does make me question how this laptop will be able to run even more intensive games in the future. That being said, I was impressed with how good the game looked and ran on this relatively inexpensive laptop.
Other things I noticed:
- The speakers sounded “okay,” but were certainly nothing special. They get the job done for most media, but I mostly used headphones while testing out gaming performance.
- Battery life was good for a gaming laptop of this size, yet I did have to keep it plugged in while gaming for the best performance.
- The cooling system also works really well, and kept the LOQ at a lower temperature while I played games. I typically sat the laptop in my lap, and I wasn’t really bothered by hot temperatures coming from the LOQ.
All in all, I think that the Lenovo LOQ is a pretty good gaming laptop for the price, albeit one that has to make some sacrifices to keep that price low. This laptop runs on the absolute lowest amount of RAM I would want in any modern gaming PC, yet I have to say that it does make it work reasonably well. Additionally, while I would love a larger SSD, I understand that keeping it at 512 gigs helps with the overall cost. While some might call this a "budget" gaming laptop, the LOQ does not feel like one, and I think that is something you truly have to consider when judging the quality of this product. If you're looking for a gaming laptop that won't break the bank, the Lenovo LOQ should be at the top of your list.

Laptop specific items:
-Standard Windows 11 install. Charged the unit immediately (overnight) and then my standard 'update all the things' before I move on. Hours, and multiple reboots later, the laptop seems good to go. Just a note, I've used the laptop multiple times now, and just before logging on to write this Windows gave me the "let's finish your setup" screens. I'm chalking that up to Windows and not the laptop itself though.
-Lenovo Advantage software comes installed as well, though that does seem useful for customizing as needed.
-System boots almost immediately.
-When not gaming, unit stays cool and is very quiet.
-Keyboard has a nice tactile feel, and I find it to be not all that much smaller than a standard one.
-For better or worse, the system comes with McAfee antivirus installed. Not something I necessarily want on a gaming laptop (well to be fair, not any laptop...).
-I don't know if this is standard on new laptops but there is a new Copilot button that invokes the Windows Copilot AI. I've used it at work (Copilot, not the button) - it wasn't as useful as I thought it would be at the time of writing this review.
-For non-gaming, I got about 3 hours on the battery (basically just browser use). Charging cable seems fairly long, guessing about 10 feet, and the power brick isn't unwieldy.
-Mostly standard ports you'd expect on a laptop
-Standard HP touchpad
-It's got a built in Ethernet port - extra points there!
-Display looks very crisp, clear and not washed out in any way
-My biggest knock on this unit - IT IS HEAVY - and the lion's share of that weight is on the back
-Honestly this is the HP I wish I had for work...
Gaming specific items:
-Loaded Diablo 4 at maximum settings and system never stuttered, nor did it sound like a jet engine while in use. It did heat up some, but not exceptionally. No visual tearing either.
-However, don't expect to game for long on the battery - you will be lucky to get an hour out of it.
-The (sometimes) over the top laser light show aesthetics are not a thing. I mean the unit has a kind of unique look to it when it's closed, but there's no LED things to customize. This isn't a head turner with it's subtle, yet sleek, exterior.
-I am a little disappointed with the 500GB HDD. You'd think nowadays 1 TB would be standard. I mean, I took up like 1/5 of my space with just Diablo 4.
Item came in a fairly 'green' box - mostly cardboard - but there were expanded foam inserts that ultimately held the laptop in place and were landfill bound.

Good all around laptop with basic gaming ability

This laptop is an entry level gaming laptop. It looks like a normal laptop except for the shelf behind the hinge of the screen. It is solidly made, and is on the heavy side for a laptop of this size and thickness. It is a 1080p screen with 144 hertz. This is an all intel laptop with an intel processor and an intel ARC dGPU graphics. Boots up extremely fast, gets to the login screen in just a few seconds. You can disable fast boot if you want an easier time of getting to the BIOS. The back comes off fairly normally, there is room to put in a second NVME SSD for more onboard storage. The RAM it comes with is 12GB which is unusual, and a bit low for any gaming laptop. The included SSD is a 512GB model, The dedicated Intel ARC graphics card also only has 4 GB of RAM, which is low for any gaming laptop. The difference between this and most gaming laptops is that this laptop will NOT use the dGPU unless you specifically tell it to for each and every game. You have to go into Settings, Graphics and choose Desktop App or Windows Store App selection, then find your game/application on the list and tell it which to use, built in graphics or the dedicated graphics. This works but would be confusing for basic computer users, who would need to rely on the prompts to do so by the Intel software. I could not get the Intel Arc Control software to find my games with a scan, so adding by Windows 11 menu Graphics was the only way to force the use of the graphics card. I would recommend this for an all around laptop, battery is good for unplugged general computer use. Gaming on battery will be around an hour or so depending on the intensity of the resources used by the game. As an entry level gaming laptop, it works, runs older AAA games fine, like Fallout 4, etc. Will not be able to meet the minimum requirements of many of the newer 2023/2024 release big games.

Frist let me start buy say I'm not sure how you can get a 5-star gaming laptop without a larger cart to carry it around. That said this is pretty good for what it is.
Let start with look, touch and feel - The packaging is a bit plain however the laptop itself has a nice look to it. The lid and keyboard felt solid, much better than some others that I have tried. It is a very heavy laptop and at first that was noticeable but after a bit of moving with it I didn't seem to notice it as much. There were a few things that I didn't like mostly surrounding the touch pad. It had a different feel to it and was tough to use for anything other than basic windows functions - addition of a mouse was absolutely necessary. Also, there were several times it didn't seem to register movements - not sure the reason but after connecting with the mouse I didn't have any issues.
Now let go to setup - not sure why every widows PC takes 2 days worth of updates (maybe exaggerating a bit but it seems way to long). After setup and uninstall of the free trials of bloatware the system did seem to perform as expected. I will say that the customization of the system and graphic were a nice add. for basic gaming the defaults were ok but had to adjust for some more intense games.
Now functionally - basic games the system performed flawlessly however the more intense games required CPU and GPU adjustments to run with lag, or excess fan noise. That said I was able to make the adjustments and get the system to run all the games, I tried to run without major issues - there were a few glitches here and there but nothing show stopping. I found the monitor to be crisp and clear without any ghosting. The brightness was OK - not sure if you were in a bright environment if it would be as clear but under most cases you should be OK. I was a little disappointed in the battery life (about 3.5hrs) when the system was taxed a bit, not a major issue but did expect a more. I sure there were some adjustments I could have made to increase that
Bottomline - for what this is, an entry level laptop, it's a decent product.

This laptop performs fine for video, streaming and browsing. The full keyboard is nice with a side number pad. The keys are not backlit and the battery runs out quicker than I'd like.
The laptop came ready for setup out of the box and it includes the charging block and plug. The block uses the rectangular plug similar in size to a USB-A (special plug, not interchangeable like USB-C). The laptop is a larger style with a full base and not compact like the chromebooks. In the thicker base there is a fan for cooling unlike many of the slim models, so that's a bonus but makes it larger.
The laptop comes loaded w/ Windows for you to setup new or sign in with your existing account and add the new laptop. The screen size is nice and full, very limited plastic edge.
It has a large center touchpad and full keyboard (with larger than usual buttons). The key response feels nice and responsive. The keypad is not backlit so it is not easy to use in the dark. The sound and video quality is good. The battery ran down quickly when it was not in use so I would plan to leave this laptop plugged in and only unplug it while in use so you are not caught by surprise that it is dead when not in use.

The Lenovo LOQ laptop is a decent all around computer. Light enough and small enough to be portable, and has decent performance specs. This kind of laptop would suit people looking for a budget "Do All" computer such as beginning gamers, college and high school students. The Lenovo LOQ is also a good choice for people who need a portable media center for video editing or graphic design.
As an all arounder it's not particularly stellar at any one thing, hence the 4 stars. This is not for the hardcore gamer or ultra professional video editor as it lacks even 1tb of storage space. The screen is only 1080, so those looking for ultra resolution might be disappointed.
Game wise, you won't be using high or ultra settings.
World of warcraft ran on good settings at 45-50fps. Once moved to high, there were numerous occasions where FPS dropped below 25, especially in cities or graphic intensive areas.
Escape from Tarkov on medium settings resulted in 30-35fps.
Battery life is lacking at only 2 hours 10 mins on general web surfing.and about 65 minutes gaming.
All in all it's a good sub $750 gaming/production laptop.

One of the best gaming laptops available in the market at this price range.
The laptop is relatively very lightweight, and the bill quality is really good as compared to other competitors in the market. Set up was quite simple with the standard windows and step-by-step setup. The battery life of this laptop is just amazing. I was able to play games on this laptop Continuously for about seven hours until it got to about 10%. The laptop also charges very quick with the fast charging capability. The screen has an amazing clarity and precision when it comes to gaming specially. The graphics on this laptop is just great for gaming. Battery class for a pretty good amount of time. Some of the heavy games seems to have a bit of lag in graphics, but I don’t expect this laptop to handle heavy graphics loaded games. For example, after playing the age of empires for about four hours I noticed the mouse moving a bit slower in the game and I had to close the game and restart it.
Overall, a great laptop for gaming at the price range and I would highly recommend this to anyone who are beginning there, gaming journey .

After using this laptop for a while, I think it's pretty decent. It runs games pretty well, except for the fact that I can't seem to get Cyberpunk 2077 to run. Older games work pretty well when cranked up to maximum graphics settings, particularly when you install DXVK. Borderlands 2 was fine, BioShock Infinite worked great, and I got Borderlands 3 to work pretty well at reduced graphics settings. The machine seems to work fine for media playback such as YouTube. The keyboard feels pretty mushy, but it's not a dealbreaker - particularly since it has a backlight. I also like that this machine is just grey with white lights - I can easily bring it into a professional setting without a second look, because even though it does have a "chin" it doesn't look like an RGB-festooned spaceship. In that regard, it's actually pretty great for things such as bringing it to college to do schoolwork and then playing Genshin Impact in between classes. I also really appreciate that it's easy to crack open - there's no tamper seals to deal with, and the base plate comes right off with a screwdriver and a guitar pick. I actually found a second NVMe slot by doing this, which was a pleasant surprise.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the Intel Arc A530M graphics. I have yet to encounter a bug with them. It feels like the Arc drivers have matured a lot since the cards were released, which I'm glad about.
That being said, I can't quite get over the really horrible first impression this laptop made on me. The first time I set it up, it was barely usable. The machine would constantly freeze. I'd open Edge, and it would just be a blank white window without even the X button. Firefox would lock up. I'd constantly have to get out Task Manager to kill some unresponsive process or other. When watching YouTube, I had a persistent issue where the video itself would freeze as well as the window it was playing in, but I could still hear the audio, and I could still control the video with my keyboard. Oddly enough, even with constant issues that made my computer completely unusuable for basic tasks, I could still game perfectly fine. Anyway, I got sick of it and installed Linux, only to find out that it had the same issues. I managed to download a recovery USB from Lenovo's website, and for some reason using that to reimage the computer worked fine and resolved all of my problems, even though I didn't make any changes from the factory defaults? I'm really confused and a bit upset by the whole experience, and while I'm liking how it's running now that that's resolved, I'm still suspicious of the computer. If reinstalling the factory image fixed all of my problems, it should have worked fine the first time I set it up.
I don't understand what happened, but that first impression really damaged my feelings about this computer. If it had worked like it does now right out of the box, I would have absolutely recommended it without hesitation, but I'm not quite sure I can bring myself to now. Hopefully it was some sort of one-off.
