I bought this laptop to replace my comparably priced Surface Book 3, which is getting old and is having some issues. It was the first Lenovo I'd tried. As an online tutor and voice teacher, I spend as many as 14 hours a day on Zoom, and I was really disappointed with the camera quality. The video was grainy, and my movements looked unnatural. (My students noticed a big difference compared to my old laptop, as well.) The camera was really wide and showed almost my entire room while I was on Zoom calls, and I couldn't seem to find a setting in the camera app to effectively zoom in more. The sound quality was also subpar. Although there was plenty of volume, the sound was really muffled, as though it was all coming out of the bottom of the laptop. I tried this laptop for two weeks but returned it.

Best Buy refused to exchange defective laptop

This review is more regarding Best Buy rather than the Lenovo Slim Pro 9i that I purchased from them on 2/9. I love the Slim Pro 9. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of not trying the camera/webcam until three days after the Best Buy return period ended. Never ever have I had an issue with a laptop camera/webcam before. This one has a defect in the lens which shows up as an irregular brownish spot on images and in zoom calls. On 2/28, I called Best Buy customer service and they refused to exchange it for one without a defective camera. Lenovo has verified it is defective and will replace the camera under warranty, but I will have essentially paid $1900 for a refurbished product. I have been a loyal customer for years, but this interaction is going to make me think twice about buying big ticket items from Best Buy again.

I love this laptop, but the relationship suffers

There is SO much to love about this laptop that I have to admit it is probably my best to date. But it isn't without it's own constraints. So before you purchase you must really decide what factors are most important to you.
The specs far exceed anything I've personally owned, in a relative way. It is the thinnest and lightest I have owned, particularly with specs like these. The web cam is very nice and supports Windows Helo. Boot time is comparable to any tablet I've owned. Definitely boots faster than my iPad. And the battery supports rapid charge, more on that in a minute. There are plenty of good reviews, including one from Paul Thurot that I like. The display is amazing as well. Number of ports is ok. I really would've preferred a split of 2 USB-C ports and 2 USB-A ports instead of the 1 to 3 split it has, respectively. I do appreciate the minimal amount of bloatware installed.
But, we all know life isn't all rainbows and butterflies and this laptop is not immune to that. First, and biggest gripe...the battery life absolutely sucks. Simple web browsing and document editing gets me 2 hours at most. The rapid charge is helpful but it still falls short of the requirements to carry the EVO designation. Direct from Intel, these are the designations for an EVO branded laptop.
- Consistent responsiveness on battery across 25 common tasks.
- Wake from sleep in less than 1 second.
- 9 or more hours of real-world battery life on laptops with full HD display.
-4 or more hours of battery life in a 30-minute charge on laptops with full HD display
I have tweaked every setting six ways from Sunday and cannot get half of those specs on battery. I don't know how strict Intel is on confirming those specs in the real world but someone dropped the ball somewhere on allowing this laptop to carry that label, or passing on to the consumer how to configure to get that level of battery.
Next gripe...the power required to charge this laptop is so enormous you can forget about any current docking station being able to supply it with enough charge, at least with the USB-C/Thunderbolt port. The power adapter uses a proprietary tip for charging, so you can kiss an emergency "I forgot mine at home" universal power adapter hail Mary purchase at Best Buy goodbye. If that's a worry for you, then you better spend the $80 and get a 2nd charger from Lenovo and just leave it in your bag at all times.
Next...more an irritation than a deal breaker, but it does have a 2nd slot for adding another hard drive. The primary slot is gen 4. The second slot however is gen 3. Not that I would probably notice, but someone else may.
Another slight irritant, but not a concern for me. The 32 GB of memory will be more than sufficient for me for a very long time. But you should be aware that it is soldered on. There is no replacing or upgrading it, unless maybe you're an electrical engineer.
All in all I still like the laptop, and I really want to love it more than I do, but the battery and charging port challenges were enough alone for me to drop the rating one star each. The rest I can live with as there's no such thing as perfect. If it weren't for those 2 things I would quite easily say this is the most perfect laptop I have ever owned. And being in the IT field for nearly 30 years, possibly even stand that ground among the business class laptops I have worked with.
If you want performance and a desktop replacement that stays plugged in all the time, this is a serious contender. If you want true mobility plus performance, look elsewhere.

nvme ssd can be upgraded larger than 1TB

i just bought the 16" i9 model. I just want to let you all know documentation says 1 TB nvme max, not true I added a 2TB 980 pro which is pcie 4.0, no problem, it works. also the stock ssd is 4.0 pcie, the other slot is pcie 3.0, there is only one 4.0 slot, I moved mine to the other slot and it downgraded to 3.0 pcie no problems. also did not have to do a windows repair, windows ran like nothing happened. also you need to provide your own nvme screw, they have a smaller screw for the 4.0 slot which is smaller than normal, it will not fit the 3.0 slot as that requires a standard larger size screw. bottom of laptop is t5 torx screws, do not use a lot of pressure, it binds and you will strip your screwdriver like i did. it has blue locktite that's why I tried to use more pressure not knowing what was happening. the screws are tougher than you think, use medium pressure. Also the open 3.0 slot has a thermal pad connecting the ssd to the metal cover. the 4.0 slot has no pad, I am not risking it overheat because their engineers thought air cooling was enough. in fact it has a white outline marking on the cover where a pad should go, it's almost like they forgot or cheaped out on a thermal pad. the stock ssd is wrapped in aluminum foil. I added my own thermal pads for the 980 pro I swapped out for the 4.0 slot. I advise the same. also even though this is not oled its twice as nice of a display as my oled desktop monitor, so no need to hesitate

Lenovo Fetures Fail on USB-C Port Technology
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This laptop has all teh features, but not all work as they should. The Thunderbolt USB-C does not actually support all Thunderbolt features. You cannot use a USB0C dockign station with this laptop unless it is also plugged into the additional AC adapter supplied by Lenovo.
Also, why build such a high-performance laptop and only include a single USB-C port?
There are much better options than this laptop. I am returning mine sadly...
