    Outstanding Laptop That is Serviceable!

Thinkpad's are the best made and offer premium performance no other laptop comes close to. Before I bought this laptop, I bought a Dell XPS which only lasted 3 years and went through 2 service issues with Dell before the motherboard died. Then I bought an Acer Spin 5 which I used for about a year. The Acer Spin 5 is an outstanding mid-level laptop but it had trouble driving 3 monitors without the USB C port. I was also missing owning a well built solid laptop. I finally broke down and bought the Thinkpad L380 Yoga and LOVE IT! Before buying it, I wanted to make sure I could upgrade the memory and SSD and that the memory was not soldered to the board. I chatted with a tech on Lenovo's site and also confirmed this with the Lenovo rep in Best Buy. I was not going to buy it if I could not upgrade the memory. This model is unique in the fact it has 2 memory slots and can take up to 32GB of memory. You can also remove the WIFI card and SSD to upgrade both. The entire unit is completely upgradeable and serviceable. I also have a Costco membership and could have bought the Lenovo Yoga X (top of the line model) but that unit's memory is soldered to the board. Also, it uses the newer type of SSD drive which is much more expensive. The build quality and performance of this machine is OUTSTANDING! It's super fast and the screen and keyboard is amazing. I especially love the touch point for mouse control. Once you get used to a touch point, you will always hate using a track pad - trust me on this. Also, this model has a world facing camera where you can take pictures from the front in tablet mode. It's a very unique model in the fact it's fully serviceable/upgradeable and has the world facing camera. I also love the fact the Lenovo software automatically downloads firmware, drivers and all available updates without having to go hunt them down yourself. The one thing I hate about the Acer Spin 5 I own is the fact they have no software to upgrade drivers and firmware. You have to go look for and load the firmware yourself from their website. Also, their drivers rarely ever get updated so I used a free driver update product called Driver Booster to keep it up to date. Seriously, don't waist your time and money buying a "high end" Dell XPS or consumer grade shiny metal HP Envy other high end consumer grade machine when you can get this laptop for $1000. There is no way you can go wrong with this unit. The hardware is so well integrated that you can put this laptop up against a Dell with an I7 and this laptop will smoke it with it's I5 because the drivers are so well written and the hardware is so well integrated and tested. The specs don't matter if the hardware isn't properly designed to work together. In my opinion, it's better to get a well designed machine like a Think pad which may not have the I7 processor because it's going to perform much better and be much more stable under high stress performance situations. It's also just great to use - the keyboard is so well built along with the touch point/track pad and solid materials used to built it. The thing I also don't like about my Acer Spin 5 is the cheapness of the materials. It really does make a big difference. Honestly, you can't go wrong with this laptop and once you own a Thinkpad, you can't go back. Just compare the Thinkpad Yoga to the regular Yoga quality next time you are in Best Buy and you will see what I am talking about.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo ThinkPad L380 laptop. Please keep in mind, this model is not user upgradable. A certified technician must do all of the work, so as to not void the warranty. You are correct, this system has two RAM memory slots and can support up to 32GB of DDR4-2400Mhz RAM, but the work must be done by a certified technician, so as to not void the manufacturer's warranty. lenovo

I bought this laptop to replace an Alienware 17 R2. I need to be able to develop database environments, create virtual machines and architect database, system and reporting infrastructures, create technical specification documentation and videos. Within a months’ time, the screen cracked on me and I had to shelf the unit until I could find a replacement screen assembly which took quite some time. During that time, I ended up purchasing an HP Sceptre 15 x360, ThinkPad T450s and landed on a refurbished XPS 15 9550. The XPS is an excellent machine, even at its age, it is still an excellent machine. However, I finally got my hands on a replacement screen for the ThinkPad L380 and wow... The machine I have is a i5 8th generation with 32gb of ram. I use the machine to do all the above. The L380 handles the multitasking without a sweat. I tried this on the XPS, but I it seemed to stutter when I cascaded the multiple windows with up to 3 separate operating systems and the host, running web, word, power point and snagit all open at once. I don't have that problem with the ThinkPad. It's light, upgradeable to 32gb of ram, works pretty darn good at multitasking and has the added benefit of the stylus with its own cavity in the base of the unit. The quality of the material is not as high as the XPS, the LCD panel backing is metal, and the rest of the unit is hard plastic. The pen is ok, it's not as good as, let's say a surface pen, but it gets the job done. I use it to help create in developing graphics for my slides and presentations. Battery life is good, I get about 8 - 9 hours of use. Speakers are pretty good; my only complaint is the screen. All the units I mentioned had a better display than the Lenovo. This is probably the only downside. It's not necessarily bad, but it does exist. The keyboard is an extreme pleasure and works far better than any other machine I have used, with the exception of the T450s. A matter of fact, it's the reason I am contemplating selling this unit and getting a ThinkPad P1. The construction, the flexibility of the 2 in 1, performance, the weight and the pen makes this machine an extreme MUST BUY especially at the price. I picked mine up for $999, with 8gb ram, 256gb SSD and the i5 8250U processor. I upgraded it to 32gb of ram, a 512 Pci-e SSD and the machine is really superb.

The Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga ships with a IPS LCD w/LED Backlight screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (FHD) and a brightness level of 300 nits. The ThinkPad L380 Yoga ships with its own rechargeable active pen, which charges and stores within the computer itself. This configuration ships with 8GB of DDR4-2400MHz RAM. It is not user upgradable, but your certified technician can upgrade the RAM up to 32GB DDR4-2400MHz. Lenovo

Overall, I'm happy with the Lenovo Thinkpad laptop. However, dealing with Lenovo in the past, you can expect light bleed and dead pixels on their screens among other defects. (hence the reduction from five to four stars) I have one dead pixel towards the middle-left of the screen that's hardly noticeable with normal use and two spots of light bleed towards the bottom edges. The screen isn't retina, but it's decent. I owned Apple everything (4 Homepods, 27" iMac, Macbook, Apple TV, Apple Watch, 3 iPads, smart home switches, two iPhone XS Max, etc)... However, it was time to purchase another laptop and I didn't want to spend $2k+ on a 15" laptop with a questionable keyboard with scratch-able anti-reflective coating (Apple Macbook Pro). I decided to sell off the Apple and invest in Google and Windows (yuck) based laptop. So far, no regrets and I was surprised how well google syncs with Windows 10 now. There's a lot of features that have carried over from Apple to Windows and Android regarding syncing devices e.g. texting through phone using Chrome browser... good stuff. My favorite features on the Lenovo Thinkpad L380 Yoga are the amazing keyboard (huge plus that won me over from my Macbook), expandable storage - SD card slot (using a 256GB Micro SD), rechargeable through USB-C ports + has two USB A ports, fingerprint read for login, runs fairly quiet most of the time (fan off), but fan does come on once in a while and when it does, it's subtly noticeable in a quite room, corning gorilla glass, that won't have anti-reflective coating pealing off when the glass rubs the keyboard during transport (uuhmmmmm, Apple), sturdy chassis, metal hinges, back-lit keyboard, SSD. What a don't like is the trackpoint, dead pixel (questionable quality control; my first laptop had a bright white spot on the screen), 360 degree functionality (would prefer a regular laptop, not the hybrid Thinkpad, but this will do), does not have water proof keyboard, no magnetic latch (latch in general) to keep lid secured to chassis. Overall, the Thinkpad is a solid laptop that feels sturdy and like quality. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

I owned this machine for all of 12 hours before giving up and returning it to BestBuy. I really liked the design and price of the L380 and thought it was going to be perfect for my needs. After getting it home the fans were getting pretty loud and the machine itself was getting quite hot. I wrote this off as first time out of the box running updates over stress. After closing the device and going to lunch I come back and flip open the laptop and the screen would not turn on. The machine itself was on but the screen just wouldn't come on. After googling what the issue might be I was able to get the screen on by shutting it down and holding control F8. After running updates and waiting hours I restart the machine and while the screen problem not turning seemed to have been fixed now my screen was about 75% of the size it was supposed to be. YUP after updates my screen SHRANK, for the life of me I couldn't find a way to fix this. After waiting another hour and half on diagnostics and updates and BIOS I said screw it and took it back to Best Buy. I fully admit to not being a very tech savvy person but I don't think I really need to be for a product to just work directly out of box. Maybe if you're more tech savvy and can put up with updates and just all around stupid stuff this might be the product for you, because again I think the concept of this machine is literally perfect, the size, weight, included pen, touch screen, keyboard are all great, BUT ONLY IF IT WORKS FOR THE END USER!!!!!! After returning this device I bought a Surface Pro 6 and it is working perfectly out of box and what I'm writing this review on.

We are sorry to hear that you had issues with the initial setup of your Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga. From the description of the issue you provide, be sure any software you installed is compatible with Windows 10. There is no need to install Microsoft Office software. The software is already part of the operating system, you just need to activate the software with a purchased product key. If you have installed a copy of Microsoft Office, this is conflicting with the existing copy on the system and this will slow your system down. If you have installed a 3rd party anti-virus program, be sure that Windows Defender is turned off and that the trial version of McAfee Anti-Virus software is uninstalled. There can only be one anti-virus program on the system. You may need to restore your system to original factory default settings if any of the programing errors have occurred. You can do that by typing "restore" in the Cortana search window. Just click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom left of your Windows 10 Desktop. Click on "Reset This PC" Then click on "Get Started" and follow the on screen directions to restore to factory defaults. If the problem persists, we recommend you contact Lenovo Tech Support at: 877-453-6686. For 2018, Lenovo retained its place for a second year as the best laptop vendor:

After doing a lot of research online, talking to several salesmen at Best Buy and at other stores this was supposed to be one of the more reliable and tougher PC's available when i purchased it when starting my business in March 2017. It was to be used mainly for running car tuning software (HP Tuners, Holley, Megasquirt EFI, etc), doing online bookwork and regular web surfing. It was a lot of money to spend that i had not anticipated but when my old Dell that i had forever finally died it was go cheap and hope it lasted or buy one i could rely on for years again. Out of the box the only issue i had was it wouldn't get a good connection to the net in a lot of places my old Dell would. That was easily fixed with an external wifi adapter i had to pack with me everywhere otherwise the performance was good, i was happy with it for the rest of a year. At 13 months the speakers quit working so to hear anything i had to plug in HDMI or head phones, after maybe 20 plugins to the HDMI port it went south and would show a pink picture on the tv screen with no sound, i packed earphones now with WIFI adapter. I've owned it 17 months now, last night it worked and this morning it was dead. Totally. Won't turn on at all. First i bought a $65 charger, then searched google and found a video on how a tech shop was fixing the issue so i disassembled it, disconnected the battery, backup battery and Ram. When i pulled the back cover off i found 2 loose screws on the main board and one had fallen out of a wiring bracket that brought my attention to the broken USB port on one side that could possibly be my fault but i'd say there's a 5-8% chance. I've never dropped it, hit it, tossed it, loaned it to anyone, don't have kids, dogs or a cat and it's kept in a nice computer bag with me pretty much 24/7. Just put it back together and it's still dead, charger is working and the battery pack shows 12.2 volts. Guess i'll be buying another PC.

This laptop is fantastic! Working with ThinkPads a lot I wanted something that was user-upgradeable and was higher quality than the typical Yoga laptops. This one was perfect for my needs. Pros: -The keyboard is one of the best I've ever used on any laptop. -Built like a tank, I can tell it's going to last a while. -User-upgradable (will void your warranty), i swapped the drive for a 1TB and added 8GB of RAM and it took me 5 mins. -The screen flexibility is great for multiple purposes. -It comes with a Wacom stylus! -Price-wise, you get way more for your money than the other Yoga laptops. -It charges from 0% to ~90% in an hour, it's very fast. -More than enough ports for most people. -Battery lasts a long time. Cons: -The screen is pretty small, but there is a huge bezel around it. I'm pretty sure they could have made this 14" or 15" without affecting the size. -Screen also isn't great quality, colors are pretty muted. -There doesn't seem to be a way to make the keyboard backlight turn on and off with the ambient light, even though the screen brightness can change with ambient light. The only way to turn on the backlight is to press Fn+Spacebar. Speakers are plenty loud, but they're on the bottom of the laptop. If you have the laptop on anything besides a hard surface it muffles them. On a hard surface they're pretty good. Despite these cons, I still think this laptop is deserving of 5 stars and is worth every penny.

I was looking to replace a 17" Lenovo Ideapad which not only turned out to be too bulky, but had a very flat keyboard that wasn't comfortable to type on. I decided I was prepared to spring for a 2-in-1 that was a bit smaller (15" or so) and had an SSD drive for performance. I tried every 2-in-1 at Best Buy, and fell in love with the ThinkPad because of its keyboard. I'm a developer, so having something comfortable to type on was very important to me, and one of the primary reasons I was trading in the previous laptop. After having it for a couple of months, I've really enjoyed the portability and performance. I haven't used the 2-in-1 feature much, but it was very handy to have when I needed to quickly show something to someone at a conference. My only very minor wish was that it had a regular RJ-45 ethernet port for the occasional time I've had an opportunity to use a wired network connection, but that is very minor. Highly recommended!

    Solid Retro Look

    Posted

I just bought one of these laptops today, and my initial reaction was regret. However, after installing all the updates through Lenovo and Microsoft I really like it! I know it's not a gaming machine, but it originally ran my games very slow (fps wise), which made me regret it, then I installed the updates and it ran much better. I am getting about 10 fps more in the few games I play after the updates. Enough fps that my games are playable and enjoyable. The computer feels very durable. I actually had a Thinkpad years ago when the IBM logo was still on the machines, and while playing with the demo at Bestbuy I joked about liking the retro look, but honestly I really liked the overall feel of the machine. I also like that it's upgrade able, and from what I've read online upgrading is easy. The only issue I see is the screen isn't the most vibrant, but that's a minor draw back for me. Everything else about this machine makes it my traveling, movie playing, light gaming, and business laptop. I think next computer may be the same updated thinkpad in the future, and I'm hoping it will have thunderbolt then too. Good computer!

While the fingerprint reader is hard to configure if you use Ubuntu, this machine is really good for developers. Before buying the L380 I bought another laptop with weird webcam placement that came with a disastrous killer wifi card, as I was told it was a "developer edition". The L380 might not be top specs but in my case, as a developer, it is really portable and the keyboard is COOL, but really *COOL*. The look of this laptop is quite standard and does not come with ugly logos and neon lights, making this a really good option if you want to look professional. When I have to run large queries I do that on a desktop machine. My experience using the L380 with Ubuntu was really cool, everything worked out of the box except for the fingerprint reader. The machine came with Windows 10 Pro, and I have to say that on both systems the wifi works really well, unlike other brand who likes to blame the user for their stupid hardware savings. And again, the keyboard is really comfortable.

Great 2-in-1 for a student/writer. It wasn't the right fit for me, but it has to with personal preferences & needs. I didn't care for the little pen. While it's convenient having it store in the device, it would get stuck inside. I struggled a lot putting it back. The screen would not get bright enough. While the keyboard was very comfortable to type on, the Function & Control keys are in opposite spots. I have 8-10 hour work days on computers with the keys in the right place. Then, I would come home to the Thinkpad with the keys in the wrong place. It slowed down my typing more than you think it would. I think it's a very nice, no frills laptop, but I need a more traditional keyboard & dedicated graphics for video editing, so I returned it. I'm now saving up for the HP Spectre x360 15T or Microsoft Surface Book 2, which is at a completely different price bracket.

    - As configured, this Thinkpad laptop costs about $150 LESS than the configured price on the manufacturer's website (as of the date of this review) - Kudos to both BestBuy and Lenovo for offering a realThinkPad branded laptop at retail - Will appeal to consumers that value function and performance over appearance and glitz Since it's not clear in the features: - It DOES have a backlit keyboard, - It DOES have a microSD card reader, - The 8GB of memory is configured using One of Two SODIMM slots (which makes an upgrade to 16GB an easy matter of adding a second SODIMM) - The 256GB SSD is a Samsung MZVLW256HEHP

I picked this up when my 7 year old Macbook Pro finally died from logic board failure. I need a reliable computer but I'm not willing or able to pay the Mac premium price anymore, and I needed something that I could pick up quickly since I was left without a computer. Build quality is solid, keyboard is very nice to type on, and battery is adequate. I will be upgrading the memory and I love that that is an option! One note: the battery CAN last a long time, but the computer must be on battery saver mode. If it is set on a performance mode with full screen brightness the time it can operate away from the plug will be far less than advertised.

Mine has Intel's i5 chip, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. So much faster and lighter than my last laptop. Virtually instant on. I have had Thinkpad laptops for many years. They have always been my favorites because of the Trackpoint mouse. I have never liked touchpads. The touch screen is responsive. I bought mine at BestBuy. (I originally ordered a ThinkPad X1 Carbon from Lenovo - what a mistake. It was supposed to be shipped same day - after 3 weeks of emails promising to ship the next day, I gave up and canceled my order. I am glad I did because I am enjoying this L380 Yoga.) I use mine mostly for word processing, spreadsheets, emails and web browsing - nothing very intensive.

What can I say its a Lenovo Thinkpad. The 8th gen I5 is speedy, the display is nice and vibrant, the keyboard is excellent and comfortable to use. I love that this isn't a laptop that you can't upgrade. The SSD and RAM is upgradable. These are just very solid machines. I looked at every brand that BestBuy offers and decided on this one. I originally returned a Surface Laptop 2. While it is a nice device, I don't feel that it would hold up over time. Lack of replaceable parts is a no go for me. This has the same processor, and I believe a faster SSD than Surface Laptop 2. Get this laptop, you won't be disappointed.

I really wanted to love this laptop, in fact I posted a previous review about how great it is. However, after owning it for 5 months or so it's become a nightmare. It becomes virtually unusable while charging, the CPU throttles badly and it can't keep up with anything. It seems to partially be a heat issue, as it seems to be okay for the first couple of minutes after it's plugged in but once it gets a bit warm it throttles until you unplug it. This seems to be a common issue with these laptops if you search "L380 cpu throttling". Absolute waste of money.

We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga. The issue you describe may be due to out dated BIOS and Drivers on your computer. You can easily update the BIOS and Drivers by scanning the computer with the Lenovo Utility software installed on this computer. This system has Lenovo utilities installed to help maintain the health of the device and keep the operating system software up to date. Type "Lenovo Vantage" in the Cortana Search window (if Lenovo Vantage is not installed on your device, you can download the APP and install it now). Select Lenovo Vantage from the list. In the window that opens, click on "Health and Support". In the expanded menu, select "Hardware Scan" In the window that opens, select "Run Quick Tests". This will scan your entire system for errors. A Good Computer, But Not Great

This actually is well-performing 2-in-1 laptop EXCEPT there are limitations to the USB port usage when you are using an external monitor. If you have a USB device plugged into the wrong port while trying to use an external monitor the image on the monitor will be flashing constantly -- basically unusable. If you can unplug the USB device from the one side and move it to the other then the external monitor is fine. But then you are limited to just the one USB port. I can't speak for what happens when you use a docking station.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga. The video out signal on this configuration is through the HDMI port on the device, not the USB-c ports. lenovo

Toyotas and Hondas make great cars. Lenovo makes great computers like the Thinkpad. This Thinkpad continues in a long tradition of durable, user friendly classic computers at a great price. The keyboard is second to none, trackpad is quiet and soft to the hands, durability is excellent and most of all the RAM and Memory can be upgraded. In the era of ultrabooks, tablets and new age technology, the Thinkpad remains old school, well built and most of all modern. This laptop is a guaranteed great buy and will outlast all of these modern laptops by leaps and bounds.

I have had this unit for a few weeks now and like almost everything about it. Overall operation is great. The screen is large enough for my needs when undocked. The resolution is very nice. Battery life is good. The only complaint I have is that the finger print reader only works about 25% of the time. Most of the time I have to enter my password manually. I think there is a support thread out there on how to improve this so that is why I did not nock this rating down to a 4.

For the price point its more than adequate. You get a nice build quality and decent performance. I still prefer the higher end thinkpads but for 799 this will do for most people. You'll have to spend over a grand to get the premium thinkpads. This thinkpad is originally 999 dollars but with the sale price and my 60 dollar gift card the total after tax came to 795 so I can't complain much here.

I absolutely love my new laptop! It’s light weight and sleek. I especially love how easy it is to switch between laptop and tablet mode. The fingerprint technology is wonderful. It prevents me from having to continuously enter a password. I also love that it comes with Cortona, which allows you the ability to use voice for searches. I highly recommend this laptop for anyone. It’s a great value for the price.
