Why I bought the Yoga 720 (over HP Spectre)

Review from a Network Administrator.
Basically, my old Dell laptop died so I needed a replacement. I hadn't purchased a laptop in 5 years so I researched. As a Net Admin, I've supported IBM/Lenovo, Dell, and HP laptops in the past and have had good luck with all those manufacturers. I didn't rule out second-tier vendors such as Asus but they weren't my core focus. Don't get me wrong, if there was a second-tier vendor that met my requirements at a compelling cost point (which there wasn't), I would have considered it.
My requirements:
15.6" screen, quad core processor, 12GB RAM (minimum), about $1,000, and a tactile keyboard/trackpad that didn't feel mushy. SSD was a nice to have but I do a lot of Photoshop so I wanted a bigger hard drive.
Why those requirements worked for me:
For me, 13" screens are too tiny and 17" screens are too massive. I tend to keep my laptops a long time so a quad core would help keep things running swiftly, even with a constant onslaught of patches, security updates, and fatter software applications. In addition to Lightroom/Photoshop, I do some light gaming as well. As you know, there are a ton of different laptop configurations/sizes/pricing out there. My requirements may not work for you (maybe you want a 17" screen, totally fine) but those listed requirements work perfectly for me.
Why I chose the Yoga 720:
As you see, my requirements were really specific and frankly, there weren't a lot of options to choose from. As I researched, it eventually dawned on me I might as well get a 2-1/convertible laptop. The price was a little more, true, but it gave a lot more flexibility how I could use the device (tablet mode, etc.)
Yoga 720 v. HP Spectre:
I really struggled deciding between these two laptops. The quad core HP Spectre with its gold trim is the sexiest laptop on the planet. It has comparable stats, beautiful curves, good weight, and definitely looks better than the Yoga 720 from an eyeball standpoint. There were two problems with the Spectre: 1) The model I wanted was over $1,500 (this was at Best Buy, January 2018) and 2) the HP Spectre trackpad was by far the most frustrating trackpad I have ever used. The trackpad is just too big for its own good, left clicks turn into right clicks, etc. Super annoying. I really tried to enjoy the Spectre but the trackpad killed all enjoyment. What should have been joy degraded to frustration.
Yoga 720 Use:
I've owned the 720 about a month and love it. I just wish it came in the darker color like the Yoga 710. I think I paid around $1,200 for it (again, Best Buy, January 2018).

Beware defective 4K screens

First of all, for this price, this is one of the best laptops in terms of features. Nowhere else are you going to find a laptop at this price point with a 4K screen, quad-core i7, solid-state drive, and GTX 1050 that doesn't look like something out of a Transformers cartoon.
HOWEVER, With that low price comes dodgy build quality. The unit feels solid, but the keyboard feels very spongy and the touchpad is sometimes slow to respond. Most importantly, there is a recurring issue with these models where a black bar will appear in the top right corner of the screen and slowly drift downwards over several days, becoming more and more visible and annoying. This is a known hardware defect in the screen and it's surprising to me that this batch is still being sold as nearly all units seem to experience this same issue only a few days after purchase. It can be mitigated by turning the laptop vertical and upside-down overnight, but the bar will re-appear after normal use.
So if you're willing to take the chances on the screen issue, go for it, but I'd say stay away until Lenovo pulls the defective units and ships out new ones. Aside from this, it's a great laptop, but I wouldn't recommend it right now.

I really enjoy this laptop, it works great for what I want. I occasionally game, watch youtube videos, do picture editing and school work. Primarily school work. I run programs such as visual basic, standard office, wireshark, etc. It handles all of these great, but the black line on the top of the screen that I've had on three of these machines now is just ridiculous. Why has Lenovo not recalled these panels yet? I have gone through two machines in under, let me state that again, UNDER a WEEK. I cannot believe that Lenovo will not listen to their community, with the multiple complaints of dead pixels on this review site, as well as the 48+ pages of complaints from others on the community forum. I know this is somewhat of a rant, but it degrades a company's image when they don't listen to their customers.
Pros
- Screen is beautiful. . . when it works
- 2 in 1 hinge is buttery smooth
- Keyboard backlighting is bright, sometimes overpowering
- Easy to get 8+ hours on battery life
Cons
- Storage speed is ungodly slow at times
- Auto rotation has a mind of its own when switching to tent/tablet mode
- Trackpad tracks nicely, but the button presses sound like slamming a piece of metal onto a table.
- The machine tends to not want to shut down very fast, 1-2 minutes.
- Hinge has a weird cracking noise when first opening, only the right side
- Dead row of pixels on multiple machines
Images attached are two separate machines.
It's sad to have a Lenovo product I didn't like, I've had multiple. I even still have and use a Lenovo v570, still have it working as if it were new. Most durable machine I have ever owned. Unfortunately I guess Lenovo has lost touch with those roots, because this machine is anything but.

I looked at this laptop for months and it went on sale for 300 less than sticker price and I broke down and finally bought it. There are very few things I dont like about it and honestly its probably just a setting I need to change. I was surprised by how fast it charges too. It keeps up with everything I need it for I mainly watch movies and music videos and it works fine for that. Very quick computer although there is always newer and better we all know that. But I feel like this will last me 10 years and that's what I wanted. I would not reccomend any laptop to anyone because there are so many you just need to go find out what it is fits your needs. The only con is I suppose that it doesnt have a CD drive which is ok, but it not having a sd card drive was a major drawback. I didnt see any options for that at my best buy but I feel they could of at least had a bundle deal for a Lenovo CD drive, pen, and card reader with the laptop. I bought the bamboo pen that was beside the display thinking it was a Lenovo product and turns out Lenovo has their own pen. Really feels straight out of apple's playbook and that's why I dont buy apple not because I cant afford it but because its mostly a status symbol with slightly better graphics and that's really up for interpretation

I love this laptop, mostly after spending 1,000 dollars on it. The only issue that I had and still have is that the camera never worked. It personally doesnt bother me as I have other forms to video chat but it was a downfall. I never cared to get it repaired. Otherwise this laptop is amazing.

I just bought this 5 hours ago. I wanted a 15" touch screen that offered high end graphics (photoshop and 4K video editing). There is a black line the runs crooked near the top of the monitor. When you tilt the monitor a little bit the line slowly disappears. I searched around and found out this is a common problem with the 4K monitors. Most people did not notice the line until the warranty was up or were told that it was there fault the line appeared. Poor quality control.

I purchased this laptop as an open box. It was Geek Squad certified. It was shipped in an over-sized box, without additional protection, and without the original box. One small sheet of bubble wrap was in the box. All the cells of the bubble wrap were deflated. The box was badly damaged. The laptop was filthy, dirty, and damaged. See photos for a better description. Obviously, I did not keep the product.

I had such a hard time choosing between the 720 and HPSpectre that I bought them both, fully loaded, 4k res, 16gig etc. I like to mess with stuff and my wife likes to keep things factory fresh and has a thing for HP so I gave her the spectre and kept the yoga. She works at home on the computer and the absolutely adores the HP. Its a very fine machine and the quality of fit and finish are impeccable. Everything works out of the box and we both prefer the keyboard on hers more than mine. Even the backlit keys look better on the HP.
So fit and finish and keyboard are both wins for the spectre.
Sound quality we both agree that the Yoga just totally outclasses the Spectre. We were both surprised and guessed wrong before comparing. The speakers on the yoga have the openings on the bottom and they just dont appear to be in a logical place at all. The HP appears to have a million places for sound come from. We tweaked settings and compared all sorts of things. Honestly, we tried everything we could think of to make the HP even come close to the yoga in sound quality, range and volume. Using only the internal speakers the Yoga wins by 2 miles.
Reliability, that goes to the HP. There have been zero issues for the spectre in almost 2 months of steady use 8 hrs a day on a daily basis. Its almost too reliable for comfort. The yoga not so much. Its hard to bash the lenovo as I stated that I like to tinker, but out of the box it had some issues staying connected to wifi and it would occasionally go to sleep and not wake up without doing a power button restart. An update along the way or something I cant explain made that all get better. I upgraded to win10 pro and joined the insider program active development fast pace. I also installed throttlestop to try and workaround the 2.8ghz max that lenovo set for the only quad core i7 to be put in a 2 in1 so far. I know its to keep from overheating anything but thats like buying a porsche and only using low octane fuel. Why???
My point being I had a complete failure and with the upgraded 3 yr warranty with onsite repair through lenovo, I got a recovery flash drive at no cost and a tech dispatched to repair it here in the middle of nowhere within 72 hrs. I got it back up and running with the flash drive myself before the tech got to my house. Thank god because lenovos answer was a replacement motherboard. We both agreed that usually causes more issues than it fixes and since it passed all the tests we agreed to send the replacement back. Now with a little undervolting and this and that with throttlestop it purrs like a kitty at a steady 3.4ghz and stays under 90deg during a solid 8 thread benchmark.
I have not had the screen issue that many have reported as of yet. The performance of the quad core i7 is obvious if you have it doing identical tasks along side the HP. The geforce 1050 outperforms the HPs although I wish it was a 1050ti or had 4gig of dedicated memory.
I really like them both but prefer my yoga. The active pen on the HP is a kids toy, but better than what lenovo doesnt include. I got a wacom stylus for mine and its just awesome. I wish the lenovo had some more ports and got rid of the stupid lenovo only charger. That never crossed my mind until I realized the wife accidently charging her hp with the USB-C cord from my nexus phone and not having an issue. There are a couple imperfections in the way seems join on the lenovo and the HP is flawlessly assembled. I dont think I have ever seen a laptop of any sort as beautifully assembled as the HP.
I have just gotten attached to my yoga that could. It will do anything I can throw at it and do it well and do faster than anything its found to challenge it. Multiple videos playing, High detail graphics programs, file conversion. Its just super fast. The 4k screen is only noticably better when next to a non 4k screen. Both machines are useless outdoors due to reflection off the glossy gorilla glass.
All and all I say if you want something that does what its supposed to do and do it consistently the same you should go with the HP. If you want a machine that outruns everything when its tuned up but you have to replace the spark plugs and check the timing and air in the tires to get that every time the yoga wins. The Dell XPS instantly forfeits the race with webcam someone decided to put at the bottom of the screen. Who would trade an invisible bezel for a webcam that shows anything but a snotty nose.

Short version: it isn't a gaming laptop, it isn't a tablet, but it will handle most things the average user/light gamer/occasionally creative might throw at it.
I picked this up knowing about the possible backlight diffuser issue, where one of the plastic sheets (with an annoying black border) can slide down, leaving a line across the screen. Over 65 pages of a Lenovo product forum thread about the issue, and I read (okay, sometimes skimmed) it all.
But so far, my luck is holding out. No line across the screen (yet), and what a screen it is. That 4k is beautiful. Color looks good to me. Touch and pen response seem good, though the Wacom Bamboo Ink I bought at the same time squeaks at low pressures. I've tried all of the included tips, all seem to squeak unless I'm over about 25% of the pressure range. (Guess based on using a drawing program and gradually increasing pressure til it stops, then going from max pressure to when it squeaks.) I don't know if this happens with other pens.
Ran the trial version of 3DMark. Don't remember the score, but considering all the stuff in the benchmark run, I think the 1050 held up pretty well.
It is a fairly heavy machine. I tried folding it over to tablet mode and using touch/pen, but I wouldn't bother trying to walk around using it like a digital clipboard or something. Not to mention the keyboard feels really weird holding it like that. Maybe if it had that tablet-mode locking mechanism I read about on a different model.
Battery life has been good, though I haven't checked the time to go from full charge to shutdown yet.
So who is this machine best for? Digital artists (once you get past the Wacom squeak) should be happy with it. Some current games should be fine on lower settings, but I'd definitely switch to either an external keyboard/mouse or controller.
If you just want to internet, email, or watch video, there are many cheaper, lighter options.

I bought the Lenovo Yoga 720 15 inch from BestBuy a month ago. It is the best laptop in this price range while compared to other expensive product such as Dell or HP which has the same configuration as this. I am very much satisfied with the performance and ability to withstand 8-10 hours after an hour of charging. The configuration is really good that allows me to run high intensive applications smoothly without any lags. I recommend this product to those who are willing to get powerful configuration at a best price. I got this laptop with student offer and some discounts from Bestbuy.

This 2-in-1 performs very well and has great graphics. It has handled everything I've thrown at it thus far. 4K video, games, and Solid Works run flawlessly, although heat is to be expected and the fan gets quite loud...again, expected. The only draw backs so far (5 weeks give or take) is the battery life and getting an occasional horizontal screen tare consisting of the black and green etch. I am on the laptop for school about 7-8+hrs a day and notice it maybe once every other day. Overall it has been everything that I hoped for and especially happy with the fact that I paid nearly $1000 less than its big name competitor. A few classmates have followed suit and bought the YOGA based on my recommendation and seem to be enjoying its functionality and use for an engineering student.

I got this computer as an open box and when I opened the box at home I found out that one line on the top of the display was missing! so I returned the computer back and BestBuy gave me a new in opened box and this one is looking great. The display is 4k and looks amazing and I am loving it. The main reason for me to get this computer is the Windows Ink, I wanted the ability to write on the screen with a pen, and it works great.
Pros:
. Great 4K screen
. Responsive touch screen
. Looks great and up to date
. All Aluminum enclosure
. Build in Graphic Processor with 2GB of DDR5
. For the price, it comes with 16 GB DDR5
. Super Dooper fast boot up, less than 6 seconds
. Finger print reader is awesome fast
Cons:
. The charging connector to the computer sticks out too much and could cause damage (I almost gave 4 stars due to this reason, but it is such a nice computer, I had to control myself from doing so)
. No SD card reader
. The up-Down keys are a bit strange
All in all, this is much better computer than the HP, Dell and many others in its category. This is Intel i7-4 Cores, unlike the HP and the Dell, be aware of this fact, it is fast like it is running away from the police. I got the Pen from Bamboo to do the sketching and it works very good. if you are interested in an upscale computer, this is the one for you, don't waste your time.

Bought this laptop first week it came out. I was skeptical at first since there were hardly any reviews on this laptop but decided why not give a try .. also this laptop was on sale for 1,200 at the time. The laptop I purchased came with all the bells and whistles! I7 processor , quad core, 16gb of ram and 512 ssd!! The 4K screen is amazing especially editing with a 4K camera! The touch screen is a nice addition although I don't have much use for it. The fans are a bit loud but if your someone who zones out while editing or doing just about anything the fans won't bother you much. So far it's been a couple of months and the laptop is still performing great and has had a lot of editing use. I edit almost everyday and this laptop has not shown signs on slowing down. coming from someone who always talked down on Lenovo laptops, I would now recommend that if you need power at a low price take a long hard look at this laptop!

I really love the fact that Lenovo was able to offer so many good specs for under 1500, but the build quality of the laptop, while nice, is far from perfect. The hinge is uneven which means that the lid of the laptop doesn't sit flush when closed. The bottom panel is also not attached properly causing it to protrude on the right side and creating a gap on the left side. To me, that's inexcusable for the price

This laptop has everything one could need in a laptop. The 4k screen is gorgeous and the touchscreen is wonderful whether in laptop or tablet mode. The fingerprint scanner is the best I have seen anywhere. It even runs games well with the 1050 it has inside it, dependent upon the settings of course. I have a desktop for gaming though so I am not too concerned with playing on max settings on the laptop. All in all, it is an amazing laptop.

Hello, my name is Paul and I've been a Mac os User for 13 years until I purchased this Lenovo Laptop. I develop websites, edit large format images, and videos. This Lenovo Yoga 720 15in 4k is incredible for what I need it for and more. For under $1500 this is the best laptop in the market as of 9/2017. The power in this laptop Compared to a Macbook pro would set me back $2400, and it would not have a TOUCH SCREEN, only a buggy touch bar. Mega fail there for me as an Apple consumer, and even though a desktop is better for the work I do, I need to be mobile, and this laptop does it for me. Windows 10 is a beautiful Os and major upgrade from the last time I use it (Windows 95, LOL), that it was easy to adjust coming from Mac os sierra. This laptop has a beautiful 4K display that is a touch screen, which I find myself using a lot when I extend to multiple displays. I can't believe Apple users haven't been able to use a touch display all these years on their macs. In addition to using the 4k touchscreen, you can use a Wacom pen and edit photos right on the screen. Its a great experience having to use a screen and not a Wacom tablet to edit pictures. Overall coming from a Macbook pro ( every generation model) I'm pleased with the Lenovo Yoga 720 15in 4k in a very big way, and if you're a die-hard Apple user like I once was, I recommend this laptop for those who need a better performance out of their current MacBook Pros.
Pros:
-Quad-core processing
-Nvidia Geforce Gtx 1050 graphics card
-4k Touchscreen
-Minimal Design
-Great Keyboard for typing
-Finger touch is fast
-Flip and fold is great for using it as tablet mode or external touch display
-Lightweight considering the size and specs
- $1499 at this price its a no brainer, only other laptop that comes close is a Dell XPS but its $400 more.
Jbl Sound speakers are nice and loud.
Cons:
-Yoga, this name for a laptop is killing me and turning people off. Lenovo, Change it and your sales will soar.
-16gb ram, now I know its good but 32gb is better and being able to add additional ram to it will also make this a no-brainer purchase.
- Trackpad is good, but this is where Apple is leading the way
- Battery life is decent, could be improved but the 4k screen is probably taking up most of the power so it's understandable.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo Yoga 720-15. This system has up to 8 Hours of battery life, depending on the work that the system is performing. To increase battery life, try changing your power management setting to a more conservative one. You can do this in the control panel, in the power management category on your system. Select a more conservative power management setting to extend battery life. With regard to the touchpad, you can make adjustments to the touchpad in your system settings. You can get there by clicking on the magnifying glass at the bottom left of your Windows 10 screen. Type "touchpad" in the search window. Select "Mouse & touchpad settings" from the list of choices. You can make general adjustments to the touchpad there. You can also select "Additional mouse options" for more detailed adjustments to the touchpad sensitivity by increasing the delay of the touchpad.

This is an amazing, all singing and dancing laptop. The 7th i7 processor is quad core, unlike most standard laptops, meaning it has the same processing power as a desktop. Combined with 16gb of RAM, it is very quick and powerful, rivalling most 8th gen i7 processors. The Nvidia GTX 1050 is good for playing most games in 1080p, though not in Ultra detail. For a business laptop, it's a little chunkier than most, but given the hardware inside, it's actually quite compact compared to a gaming laptop. The 4k screen is crisp and has amazing color reproduction.
