Great Laptop with Limitations

I vacillated back and forth as to how to score the Lenovo Yoga C630. Do I compare it against all laptops or just the class it is in? I decided to look at it from the niche product that it is. The laptop checks off the boxes you would want for a thin & light machine on the surface: light, thin, nice screen, good keyboard, responsive trackpad, great connectivity, and most importantly great battery life. For the money, the C630 nails it on paper. Honestly there is only one BIG reason to potentially shy away from it: Snapdragon 850 processor. For the unitiated the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 is based on ARM processor designs and is a very different beast than the typical Intel (or AMD) x86 processors you see in 99% of notebooks. It is effectively a cell phone processor for larger scale computing requirements. It is lower power and can be very fast when the programs are written to take advantage of it. Fact is, most desktop computing apps for Windows are developed for x86 though. Why is this a problem? Well, unless the application you need was written directly to perform on ARM processors then Windows will run the application in an emulation mode. Of course, even that is not as simple as it might sound as only 32-bit x86 apps are currently supported so that is something else to keep in mind. The real problem with running in emulation mode is that you lose basically all of the things that the Snapdragon brings to the table. The processor goes from feeling like a Core i5 to a Pentium almost instantly. Desktop Chrome for instance is not presently compiled to support Windows on ARM directly. Therefore, Chrome must run in emulation. Let's just say that the experience is far from pleasant. The other problem with running in emulation mode is the hit in battery life. Because of the overhead of emulating x86 on ARM the processor must work harder than ever to keep things going. This has a very direct and obvious effect on battery life. Last, but not least, emulation mode is not the silver bullet for app compatibility that Microsoft would like you to think it is. It is still very much in development and there are still 32-bit x86 applications that don't play nice so keep that in mind if you decide to take the plunge.
After all of that why did I give it 5 stars? I'm sure most people would have stopped reading and moved on to a different product by now. Well, that was the point. If any of what I wrote above scares you in any way then this experiment isn't for you. If you stuck around let me tell you why this is such a great laptop (especially for the money). The laptop comes with Windows 10 in S-mode out of the box. This can be switched to standard 10 Home edition if you so choose. The primary Microsoft products such as Edge, Office, Skype, etc. run great and are ARM compiled. If your workflow is either web based or Microsoft app based than you will find a pleasant computing experience. The screen is bright and responsive. The keyboard feels great and the glass trackpad uses Microsoft Precision drivers so you get a great experience. The UFS based 128GB SSD is plenty fast and feels more akin to a standard SATA based SSD than an nVME one. The always on connectivity is great and I should warn that while this machine will accept SIMs from other carriers it is clearly favoring Verizon in what I can only assume is band support. I tried T-Mobile and it works, but it won't consistently use LTE as it will with Verizon. My cell phone is on T-Mobile and I never have issues with LTE where I live so there is definitely something going on with the band support provided by the X20 modem. The star of the show is really the battery life. The only laptop I own that even comes close to this thing is my 3 year old Dell XPS 13. On average I can get 12 hours out of it which I have always thought was incredible. The Lenovo C630 is capable of 16+ hours of real world use which is truly something to experience. If you have battery anxiety while using this than you might want to put the laptop down for a while and sleep or eat. This notebook is the closest I have found to fulfilling the promise of true all-day battery life. The additional upside is that the Snapdragon 850 is actually pretty fast with ARM compiled apps which is great too. The machine feels very much like my Skylake i5 notebook in terms of responsiveness which is really great. Things only get precarious when I have to run something emulated and the machine feels much more like my Surface Go. I figure with time more apps will support Windows on ARM directly. In fact, Chrome and Firefox are both coming in ARM variants 'soon' so that will help those that are diehard fans of those web browsers. Last, but not least, the laptop feels great with premium construction not generally seen at this price point.
Overall, this really is a great little machine and highly recommended for those that understand the current limitations it has. I suspect with time this will improve and the Snapdragon 850 is a very welcome improvement over the previous 835 efforts. For now, the Lenovo Yoga C630 is my full-time work machine (as my workflow is entirely Office-based). If you need an always connected laptop with stellar battery life and are willing to accept the application support compromise than this is the machine to buy. Period.

I'm a big fan of lenovo laptops, especially the yogas. The build quality is what you would expect from lenovo. Its solid a mix of metal and plastic. The top half is more metal and the bottom half is mostly plastic. Extremely light and extremely slim. You get the standard lenovo keyboard and large touchpad which imo is one of the best out there. The touchpad supports all the standard touch functions so no need to physically click it. Just tap or use two fingers to scroll. The keyboard is backlit as well with two different light settings which is a pretty cool. The display is high def LED touchscreen and it looks great. Gets pretty bright as well. Dual speakers on the front that sound typical of any small laptop. And because its a yoga you get the hinge system and the flexibility to flip the screen around which works really well.
As for specs its pretty standard these days for a laptop. 8gb of ram, wifi, bluetooth, 128gb ssd, camera, fp reader, etc. It boots up almost instantly. Note that it only has 3 ports on it. 2 usb-c, 1 headphone jack, and a sim card slot. It charges by one of the 2 usbc ports. So if you want extra ports or different ports you will need to buy a usbc hub, docking station, or adapter. The Snapdragon 850 seems to do pretty well. I beat it up a bit and it stood up pretty good under heavy loads. It is 8 cores but its missing a few features you get with a standard pc chipset. For example no visualization support. I guess the big pro is energy usage. Says it can go almost a full day on a charge.
As I mentioned it comes with a sim card slot so you can inset a mobile sim card into it. The advantage here if you choose to do is having data service anywhere that particular carrier has service. No need to find wifi when your on the move.
Windows 10 S, as others have mentioned you can only install apps from the windows app store. If you try and install anything outside of the store you get a popup explaining why it cant BUT they do give you the option to get out of S mode. The catch is if you get out of S mode which puts you int normal home mode you cannot go back because the PC is no longer "trusted". So I would say for people who like being locked into microsoft apps or are not very tech savvy this is perfect. But for everyone else get out of S mode ASAP! I mean I get why they are doing it and at least they give you the option to get out of it. Good news is because of this it doesn't come bundled with a lot of junkware.
In the end I really like it. Its a true mobile device. If your looking for a slim light laptop with constant connectivity for a on the go lifestyle this thing has you covered.

This 2 in1 has a very premium look and feel . It is very light (under 3lb’s), thin (.5”) and well made. The keyboard is very nice and has very nice backlit keys. The touch screen is a high gloss finish which looks and responds well. Since this version of Windows has Pen support I purchased one to get the full tablet experience. I can now write directly on the screen to take noted etc. So far it works very well. I wouldn’t use as a sketching pad per say, but very nice for notes and using as a mouse. This machine comes with Windows 10 S Mode which was new to me. Basically it is designed to work like a tablet with an App store for all your software/App needs much like all of our smart phones. I think this premise behind this is security. However Windows App Store is pretty limited as to what is available. So you may not find some of the apps you are currently using. You do have a choice of switching from this S mode to Windows Home, however you cannot switch back.
This Yoga C630 has only 2 USB C ports (one on each side). This is a little bit of a bummer since everything I own to this point is standard USB (phones, USB drives, External DVD etc.) I get that this is the wave of the future, but I would have at least liked one connection for my mouse. Not a huge deal, I simply purchased an adaptor until I catch up to speed ;-). Also on the right side you have a mic/headphone jack.
Stereo speakers are on located on the top instead of being buried in the bottom or out the sides. Nice job Lenovo. Sound is adequate and as expected for this thin of a case.
Battery life is fantastic, best I have experienced to date. This is due to the solid sate drive and the Snap Dragon 850 processor. I had not heard of this style processor being used in a 2 in 1 machine, as this style processor is usually seen in your high end smart phones. The benefit is no fan sound and really no heat that I have noticed. Drawback is not quite as powerful as your standard i5 type of processors. That being said, this device is meant for the mobile person that needs to stay connected and probably work on basic Office style applications, not for a designer working in Photoshop. This handles all of those general needs with ease. 8 GB of RAM rounds out this package.
The hard drive could be bigger for some people, but again, probably sufficient for the people that are using cloud based serviced for most of their storage.
Fingerprint scanner is fantastic. Fastest one I have used so far. Very quick to log into your device.
I have not used the LTE feature as of yet. I use the home WIFI and also Smart phone Hot Spot with no problems. You can pop in a Verizon SIM card and switch to your cellular data plan as an option.
I have primarily used this Yoga when on the move for work myself. Logging on to my office servers and using their software etc. and it has done a great job at that.
At home I even went on Amazon Video and watched a movie and the battery life hardly moved. Did I tell you I love the battery life?
Bottom line, if you are looking for a mobile 2 in 1 that won’t die on you in a couple hours, and can handle all the normal office style work, internet browsing and even watching movies, you wont be disappointed with this unit. I know I’m not.

This one is kind tough to judge. On one hand you've got a laptop that does everything that most people would want with stellar battery life. On the other hand if you want to do things you'd normally be able to do with a windows machine you'll do it with one hand tied behind your back and blindfolded.
Nearly everything physical about the c630 screams premium laptop. Aluminum case, bright beautiful screen, and one of the newest Snapdragon processors. The keyboard has minimal travel and almost makes me feel like I'm just gliding across the keyboard as I type. The touchpad is responsive and is recognized as a precision touchpad so you can disable Cortana - Three finger tap and make it something that's actually useful without having to dig in the registry or install alternate drivers.
The touchscreen is also responsive and supports windows ink. Testing windows sketchpad showed it works fine with pressure sensitivity, but the glass seems a bit thin and give causing distortion under the point you're writing. Sketchbook isn't supported on Snapdragon so I tried Contour. It worked fine also but had little lag. Drawing continuous rings made the program lag to the point it became unusable. General note taking and light sketching should be fine with the c630.
Battery life is the best I've seen on any laptop. I've only used it 10hrs and haven't dropped below 50%. I did charge it back up a to 76% last night to see how standby fared and after 9hrs of standby it dropped 9% - so 1% per hour on standby. This puzzled me as some other reviews said they had little to no battery drain. Plus Windows doesn't have all the notifications and sleep mode is supposedly a lower power state than standby. After another 8 hrs it's only dropped 3%. I'm not sure if the battery needs to be recalibrated or if there was some other issue. I'll need more testing on that front.
The fingerprint sensor is as good as any I've used on a phone and better than what I've used on other laptops. Almost as soon as I put my finger on the sensor I'm logged in. Other I've used I've had to wait readjust wait and then log in. It's nice to pop in this quickly.
Since x86 is emulated running any benchmarks is pretty useless. I haven't gotten to install any x86 applications (Chrome, Firefox, Comodo Firewall, and Malwarebytes would be then ones I'd need) because I'd rather not deal with the hit. FF and Chrome are being ported anyways so I'm eagerly awaiting them. Since this laptop runs on ARM a firewall and anti-malware might not really be needed yet, especially in S Mode. But you can never be too careful.
For the cellular connections I've used Verizon and AT&T. I didn't try my Sprint SIM because it's a micro and Sprint SIM swaps don't always work. You have to activate the device also except in some cases where the device is unknown. Verizon SIM took around 5 minutes or so to activate. AT&T connected immediately but for some reason would only connect to HSPA (which is about 13Mb/s where I live). I'm 1.5miles line-of-sight to the tower and the tower gets up to 60Mb/s on LTE. Why the c630 would prefer HSPA is odd and and issue that needs to be fixed in a firmware/bios/driver update. VZ connects to LTE always but kept disabling and jumping to Vodaphone for some reason. Roaming was off and none of my phones have this issue.
From what I can gather the antenna is rather poor for cellular connections. I live in fringe area for VZ and it would drop connection if I moved around the house - something none of our phones do. Even outside where the VZ signal is the strongest it would sometimes refuse to connect. Occasionally I'd lose both wifi and cell and have to do reboot to make it connect to either. So far both have been steady for the last 8hrs at work where the signal is strong. I still occasionally get the Vodaphone instead of Verizon though. I wish Windows would report band and signal strength. I haven't researched it yet, so maybe it does. It'll help with my troubleshooting this one frustrating issue. But, like I said, I live in a near dead zone for VZ and Sprint.
The speakers are nothing to write home about. They give sound, but not very good sound, just acceptable. I doubt most users will use this as a boombox anyways - but seriously don't try it.
Expansion is pretty limited. Only two USB C ports (either can be used for charging). It would've been nice to include an SD card reader. It's not as much a issue if you activate your cell connection but having a speedy SD card would be preferable to uploading and downloading to a cloud server.
Other than the cellular issues the c630 is an impressive go at ARM on Windows (or Snapdraon on Windows). For anyone who doesn't have need for specific x64 apps (x64 emulation supposedly coming soon) or can deal with emulation lag on x86 this is a great laptop that gives more than I'd have expected from an ARM chip on windows. Plus you get a "real" OS if you opt for the full version of Windows - which some people miss after using the other mobile operating systems. With it's light weight and always connected option this make a perfect road warrior. I'll surely be lugging this along instead of my tablets I used carry in my bag.

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo Yoga C630 (WOS). Concerning the connectivity issues you mention, you say that when using Verizon LTE, the Yoga C630 (WOS) will jump from Verizon to Vodaphone. This indicates your Yoga C630 is still setup for World communications and not local. Vodaphone is only available in Europe. Have your Verizon technician set the device to local communication and the dropping of the LTE signal should disappear.

Awesome machine but very poor software support from Microsoft and Lenovo. Promise of ARM software just hasn’t shown up. No native google chrome even though google ported it, just didn’t release it.
Emulation runs slow and only supports 32 buy intel apps. Beta 64 but support buggy.
Lenovo and Microsoft act like it’s an abandoned machine. Apple already has more support behind M1 and it’s just been released, but it lacks the awesome features of this laptop, touchscreen, convertible, cellular.
