Great sound quality
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Right out of the box, you can plug in the soundbar and connect it to your TV with either the included optical cable or an HDMI cable (not included), then plug in the subwoofer. The soundbar connects wirelessly to the subwoofer so quickly, that it surprised me at first. This comes with a remote, complete with batteries, which controls the connection settings and volume. It’s very easy to set up and use. Then this amazing sound comes out of them – I didn’t realize how bad the sound quality was for my TV until I heard the sound from this product. It filled the room, like my own little movie theater. In addition to the two devices, this comes with an optical cable, power cords, instructions, and the hardware to mount the soundbar. It doesn’t take up a lot of space on the surface, but it’s nice that it could be mounted instead. There are guidelines for this, although I prefer to leave mine sitting. It’s long but not wide, and looks good as it is, and would stand out on the wall, but maybe not so much if the TV was mounted above it. It's a simple configuration that blends into the room with minimal clutter. The speakers have a total of 400W – 90 from the speakers in the soundbar and 220W in the subwoofer – which is probably more than most people need to watch TV and movies at home. There is a set of speakers you can get to have true surround sound in the room, but the sound quality is so phenomenal from these speakers that it seems like you already have this set up. Another great feature is the automatic adaptive sound mode that helps keep the voices from being too low, and the music or commercials from being too loud, so viewers don't have to keep adjusting this on their own. This made it a lot more comfortable for me, and might also be an issue for other people, with that jarring change from quieter parts to the suddenly loud ones. It has DTS X, which is described as object based audio; this means that the sound flows around you in the room, in an immersive experience, rather than just in front of you from the TV speakers (or other connected device). The ‘Virtual’ part of it refers to the way the sound seems to come from additional directions or speakers, without needing them in place – unless you want to add them. I don’t see the need to add them, when the results here are this good, but it’s a matter of personal preference. For me, this product eliminates the need to accommodate extra devices and cords, without sacrificing the overall experience of what is playing. I definitely recommend this as a great product, which improves the quality of a home theater system significantly, for optimal results.

Vast Improvement over internal TV speakers
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My LG C8PUAI OLED TV had remarkably good sound with the internal speakers, but addition of the LG SL5Y took it to another level. The optical inter-connection was simple and inconspicuous and the wireless sub-woofer worked flawlessly out of the box. I used the LG Sync feature to make volume adjustments simple using the TV remote. I suggest using the external optical output without the internal speakers since using both simultaneously creates an echo that could not be adjusted away with the TV’s sound settings. We watch mostly streaming content with high-quality Dolby audio. While the SL5Y is not 5.1 (or 7.2), it is a remarkable improvement in sound quality and presence. Dialog is clear and well balanced with the bass. Equalization using the SL5Y remote is simple once you figure out the it is the volume control that changes settings (rather than the “folder” arrows next to the EQ button). I added a bit of treble to the EQ to help with the dialog clarity. Overall, my objective was to add sound quality without making the TV more difficult to operate for my wife, allowing her to adjust the volume with the TV remote. Mission accomplished! The sub-woofer is discreet enough (and wireless enough) to avoid the appearance of a more complicated surround system while making the TV more enjoyable to watch and listen to for both of us.

Clear Sound and Good Connectivity
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm using this sound bar with a non-LG TV. The sound is very clear, particularly via the optical port. Brackets come with the unit, however the mounts for the sound bar are on the bottom. The remote is basic, but the unit's volume can be controlled with other remotes including the one that comes with your TV (LG posts compatible brands). I like that the subwoofer is a wireless connection to the sound bar. This allows you to place the subwoofer in more convenient locations without extra wiring concerns. As for the overall sound, the unit performs well. The Surround function is OK - nothing earth-shattering, but probably needs some tweaking from it's basic EQ settings. I imagine external rear speakers (not included) would help in this regard as well. Overall this is a fine unit and good addition to my living room TV. It definitely adds more breadth of sound to what I'm watching.

Pretty good (and expandable) sound bar.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the first-time buyer, wanting to make a modest upgrade from the television's built-in speakers, they are a few brands of 2.1 want bars that are available. This one, while it may not be a top-of-the-line since those are expensive, is expandable to 5.1 wirelessly. That option is available, and it is called SPK8-S "powered wireless rear channel speakers." (However, after thoroughly reading the manual, it does not list this soundbar as being compatible with it.) There is no way to expand to 5.1 using a cable connected to this unit, so you know. Reading the 40+ pages manual thoroughly, I feel that someone with no experience in setting up a television may need help. It supports DTS Virtual X and Adaptive Sound Control - which can be turned on by pressing "Sound effect" button on the remote. I listened to a few movies with these features off, and later on, and I could hear the differences. Even if the sound effects are not chosen, the default setting really does sound much better than the television's built-in speakers. I'm not sure I would call setting up this sound bar was a walk in the park. I use a Samsung 4K Blu-ray player which has two HDMI outputs in the back. The first one is for video/audio, and the second one is for audio only. Using the HDMI connection, not supplied, connected to the output number two, I had to set the player to "automatic" audio output because I was not getting any sound. I wanted to do the HDMI output from the Blu-ray player to the soundbar's input and connect its output to the television's HDMI input but I was not able to get any signal through the soundbar. I directly connected the player to the television and did a hard reset so any changes that may not have worked with the sound bar might disappear. It did not fix the problem. I made sure because I thought I made a simple mistake by putting in the connector into the wrong port, but that was not the case. Still, it did not work. So this is something you need to know if you are planning to do a thorough put connection if you have Blu-ray player that only has one HDMI output and there is no optical output.) The workaround would be getting and HDMI splitter which will add to the cost and headache of setting this unit up. However, on page 23 of the manual, it talks about ARC connector – I believe my television does not support this function thus I was unable to do the thorough put connection. I tried HDMI number two from the player to the sound bar and it sounded great. My television is a 75 inch LG LCD 4K and I noticed that using the remote control of the television that came with it, it also control the sound bars volume. The sound bars remote control did what it was supposed to do – controlling the soundbar's volume. There is no lag in the sound when connected to either HDMI or optical output. The base speaker links to the sound bar automatically when it is turned on. This sound bar also works with Bluetooth and USB connection. The package came with the mounting kits. There are two power supplies. One is plugged into the soundbar, and the other one is connected to the base unit. It is quite an improvement from any television's built-in speakers (unless you have more expensive and newer televisions that have better speakers.) A family can enjoy a good movie with better sound with this product and in time, if they choose to upgraded to 5.1, it can be done, albeit not cheaply. But if this is all you want to use it with your television, I do recommend this product, but read the manual carefully before you purchase it to make sure you have the proper output from your players. Good for smaller rooms, not for big screens
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using this soundbar for about three weeks to watch both cable TV and streamed (Netflix & Google Play) movies, as well as BD discs. I also purchased the separate LG surround speaker kit to pair with it. Overall, this is a good choice for a bedroom or den/office TV, but I would not use this for a living room/big screen TV in a large room. The soundbar and sub combination is simply not powerful or functional enough for a home theater setup for movies in a large room. I also had a significant issue with the subwoofer that was included in the box (it was defective), but LG customer service was awesome and quickly provided a replacement. The wireless subwoofer that comes with the soundbar is small and compact, so it's easy to fit pretty much anywhere. The plug is a standard plug too, so no big wall wart or adapter wiring to deal with, which is nice. The small size also means that the bass response, while impressive for it's size, is simply not as good as a larger dedicated sub or the subs that come with other completing soundbar products from Sony or Samsung. The original sub that came in the box simply would not work, despite it being connected to the soundbar, and having the bass /woofer levels turned all the way up, there was simply nothing coming out of the unit. After about 20 minutes on the phone with LG support, the representative agreed that the unit was defective and arrangements were made for a replacement which arrived quickly. For TV and regular streaming content and music, it works well. The Bluetooth connection was stable and easy to pair. Volume levels are good and minimal distortion, considering how small the soundbar is. This being a soundbar, the sound stage and surround is all simulated, but the LG does a good job of creating a large sound stage, but stereo separation is of course limited, and I've heard better in competing (larger) soundbars from Sony & Samsung. Again, this is good enough for a bedroom or small room, but I wouldn't use this in a large living room or paired up with a large TV. The sound stage and channel separation is just not consistent with the bigger picture/room size. Wireless Surround: The soundbar also supports the LG wireless surround speaker kit, which I separately purchased and setup. Unfortunately, the soundbar has very limited features for adjusting sound levels, and the rears are overpowering the fronts right now. The wireless pairing for the rears was super simple and worked right out of the box. If you're going to be mainly watching DTS content, the rear surrounds make a big difference. Other Comments: The "ASC" feature, which is supposed to be automatic sound control adjustment doesn't really do much. I still have to manually change it to DTS-V when I watch movies, and it defaults back to ASC on power on, which is slightly annoying. The remote is small and easy to misplace, but fortunately my Logitech Harmony picked up all the commands correctly. The HDMI audio return channel feature works great. It's nice to have only one wire running from TV to speaker vs. 4-5 sets of audio cables I had before with my old receiver. The "normal" power cord and no DC adapter box is awesome. There are mounting posts/hardware included if you wanted to mount the soundbar on the wall. The cable connections are recessed, but there's not much space, so use small HDMI connectors.

Good sound great price
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This LG sound bar produces good quality sound. Given it's price range, I would say it is great. Dolby 2.1 with included wireless sub provides an entertaining experience whether being used as a speaker for your phone or tablet or with a TV. What really impressed me is the accessories included with the package. It includes an optical cable and mounting brackets along with templates and instructions. Just cant get any easier. The wireless sub produces good base with no distortion. Remote does what one would expect and there is even a program to transfer control of the system to your TV remote. This sound system is a good fit for people who want good quality sound at a reasonable price. It looks good and performs well. I would definitely recommend it.

Powerful system that's easy to setup and use
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The LG - 2.1-Channel Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and DTS Virtual: X - Black is a great sounding soundbar that's easy to setup and use. It comes with an optical sound cable that connects from the soundbar to the digital audio port on your TV. Once that is connected, there aren't any other connections you need to make, unless you want to connect something directly into the HDMI input that's also included on the soundbar. For me, connecting everything to the HDMI ports on my TV works great. I just turn off the internal speakers on the TV and all the sound comes through the soundbar. The soundbar turns on automatically when I turn on the TV, so no need to turn it on separately, which I really like. The sub-woofer connects via Bluetooth to the soundbar automatically when you have both turned on, but does have a pairing mode if for some reason the connection doesn't automatically connect. I had no problems. I have the soundbar connected and sitting in front of a 42" LCD TD and it's about as wide as the TV and about 3 inches tall. Looks great, and does come with wall mounting kit if you want to mount it below your TV on the wall. It also came with what appear to be rubber feet if you want to attach those. I didn't need to. This system REALLY cranks out the volume and BASS with zero distortion. It sounds awesome! Works great with connecting via Bluetooth also. I put it into BT mode using the Function button on the remote, connected my Android phone, and was cranking out tunes in less than a minute or two. Works great as a Bluetooth connected speaker system. The soundbar has several modes and a fairly simple set of EQ controls. The Bass Blast is my favorite as it really fills out the low end and adds a lot of thump. I found it great for listening to music and movies. The DTS Virtual: X sound mode has a more mid-range sound to it, and is geared towards movie watching. It really adds a spatial element to the sound, and really has to be heard to be appreciated! The remote is simple and easy to use. Very easy to find what you're looking for and go through the controls without much effort. The display is a simple dot display and suits it's purpose, but I would love it if this had a larger display with a spectrum analyzer because they just look cool :) I'm very happy with the system, and would totally recommend it to anyone looking for an easy to use and excellent sounding 2.1 system! Makes EVERYTHING sound so much better than the built-in speakers on the TV! Great job LG!

An Excellent Choice to Add Great Sound to Your TV
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my second LG soundbar. I was VERY impressed with the first model I had, and when I wanted to spruce up the sound on my bedroom tv I looked to LG again. There are a lot of choices on the market when it comes to soundbars, but after one great experience with LG I fully expected to have another one. Are their soundbars still up to par? In a word...YES! It is my opinion that LG has found the sweet spot between balancing price, and quality. The build quality is great. The appearance is attractive, but most importantly the sound is amazing. A HUGE step up from the sound from my flat panel tv. The setup is extremely easy. Unlike a larger setup that involves a receiver, and a bunch of speakers you don't have to worry about running wires all over the room. The soundbar is even compatible with the LG wireless surround speakers. I purchased them for the first LG setup I had, and it was totally worth it. Big theater like surround sound without any of the hassle associated with a larger setup. With all of the choices out there for different soundbars I fully recommend this one to anyone in the market.

Sounds great
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This soundbar is great. First, very easy setup. I had it out of the box and up and running in less than 5 minutes. The sound is crystal clear. The wireless subwoofer has a deep rich bass. I like the different settings depending on what you are watching. It also sounds great with music. It is my go to speaker for streaming.

Excellent soundbar
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This LG - 2.1-Channel Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and DTS Virtual is an excellent soundbar. The sound is awesome, the wireless subwoofer adds bass giving a surround sound that is fantastic. It has a slim profile that looks nice under the TV, the buttons are on the side making them easy to access when the remote is lost in the sofa cushions. Setup was easy. You will need 4 screws that are not included, and wall anchors if it doesn't align to your studs. Or you can set in tabletop style if you don't want to wall mount it. Looks nice either way. The soundbar recognized the subwoofer and connected easily. Adjust sound settings in the TV set for the soundbar. Add provided batteries to remote and sit back for beautiful rich sound. You can adjust the sound to your liking with the equalizer settings using the remote. I like the bass blast setting found with the F (function) button on the remote. Simply beautiful to my ears. I highly recommend this one.

I'm impressed.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. To be honest, I was ready to chuck the whole thing out the window when I was trying to install it. The instructions were clear as mud to me. That being said, when I chucked the instructions and let logic take over the installation was a snap. Be prepared though, you will need to purchase at least one HDMI cable if this is your first connected sound system. Can't understand why that one relatively inexpensive piece would not be included. Sound quality is nothing short of amazing...movies, regular tv, music, it's all great.

Game Room boost!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The LG 2.1 Soundbar w wireless subwoofer is a 2.1 system that fits perfectly with your 32” and above Televisions. Summary: I have previously used the Dolby Atmos version built into their OLED televisions. This sound bar provided more punch and sound! The movies and games came through crystal clear and filled the entire room with its sound. Pros: -compact -loud -great price point -versatile (Bluetooth, digital optical and HDMI) Being a gamer, this worked perfect for the gaming rooms and hooked it up to the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. Wow what a game changer this was from the traditional speakers in the TV. I was so much more immersed than the others. Con: Now it did hit some max ranges with very loud explosions which caused a little bit of distortion which made the sound muddled. Minor annoyance is the cable management placement, really is placed in an awkward position. These are minor but could have a better design. This product features for its price range are a steal and bargain. I highly recommend this product for those out there looking to upgrade their bedroom or game room audio!

Simple Sound Upgrade
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Speakers seem to be the last thing TV designers think about; and it shows. I wanted something simple that would improve the sound quality but didn't require a separate receiver/amplifier/head unit on top of the speakers. The LG SL5Y fits the bill nicely. Slim design with plenty of volume. The sub by itself improves the sound immensely. All four HDMI inputs on my TV are in use so the optical port (cable included) worked perfectly to connect the soundbar. Set up was quick and without difficulty. Overall this is a nice unit. Not the best but very good at its price point.

Good Soundbar but disappointing Subwoofer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased the SL5Y as an "upgrade" to the SL4Y. While the soundbar itself does sound a bit better overall, the Subwoofer is SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than what came with the less expensive SL4Y. Not only that but it's lacking the Cinematic Mode that the SL4Y has. Cinematic Mode sounds MUCH better on the SL4Y than the DTS Virtual X mode that replaces it on the SL5Y. You can tell that this soundbar would sound even better if it had that mode. Why they chose to get rid of it completely for the DTS Virtual X mode is beyond me. That mode is by far the worst sounding mode of all. It sounds weak and tinny. If only the SL5Y came with the same Subwoofer as the SL4Y and had Cinematic Mode, it could have been fantastic! But without those things it's merely average and was not worth the purchase price. I do not understand why they would include a weaker Subwoofer with the more expensive unit. It makes no sense. Definitely go with the SL4Y instead if you're on a budget. Cinematic Mode sounds great and the Subwoofer is quite powerful for being so small. It even has a Carbon Fiber texture to the outer casing which looks quite nice. The SL5Y Subwoofer lacks this textured look and does not look near as nice.

Typical 2-channel performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The lack of a center channel here hurts the output for this soundbar. You're back in the land of turning volume down during action sequences, up during quiet dialog, etc. It sounds great, don't get me wrong, but some volume leveling or center channel audio is *essential* when replacing your TV speakers with a soundbar and this just doesn't seem to have it.
