Great. But major (& easily fixable) design flaw

This is so much better than the side-by-side of the same size that it replaced. Seems to have a lot more internal room than our old fridge, and is very quiet (though the sound it makes is a little more focused, making it a little more noticeable than it's low volume level would suggest). We very much like the layout of the drawers -- having a wide cold cuts drawer instead of the fairly common half-width hanging drawer helps keep everything on the shelves within easier reach; this fridge does not feel claustrophobic. The freezer drawers function very smoothly and feel solid. Easy to get at food, and we're finding that we really like having a bottom freezer with drawers, as they're easier to search through than shelves would be. We would like the top drawer to pull out a little farther, but anything we don't like about the fridge is minor. On to the design flaw and solution. The left door has a retractable mullion that helps maintain the seal when the doors are closed. However, unless you open the door quickly, the mullion doesn't retract properly, and then it bangs into the other door when you try to close the fridge. Best Buy was excellent in sending someone over to fix it. They ordered a new mullion, which had the same problem, so we gave up on it. I fixed the problem completely by taping a thin metal strip (about the size of a small paper clip) onto the part on the top of the fridge interior that the mullion slides into when closing, thereby making the opening smaller. Now when opening the door, that smaller opening succeeds 100% of the time in getting the mullion to properly retract. I am astounded that LG would design something so doomed to fail, when redesigning a simple piece of plastic would have eliminated any likelihood of failure. After having found an easy fix to this single major problem, there is no other fridge we would rather have. One final note for those of you with small doors leading into the kitchen. We had to take the doors off to get the fridge into our kitchen, and discovered that the stated depth (sans doors) was understated by 1-2 16ths of an inch, as one bracket stuck out farther than advertised. We ended up having to chisel away at our door jamb to make room for it. We still have repairs to make, but still, no regrets having purchased this fridge.

    Good Except the BUZZING

    Posted

I really wanted to love this refrigerator because I got such a great deal as an open box, but I couldn't get over the buzzing and had to return it. The buzzing is coming from the compressor and not only does the sound fill the kitchen, but also the open living area and can easily be heard in the adjoining bedroom. It's such a shame because it is otherwise relatively quiet with the fans, etc. I don't think it was defective because I had just returned another top of the line LG that did the same thing (I thought perhaps the first one was defective). LG says it's not normal, but it seems like it is and I've read blogs about it. Perhaps I couldn't describe the sound correctly to LG. I ran it for more than 24 hours and the buzzing did subside after running for a few minutes after it had been jostled during installation, but not nearly enough. I purchased this because my 17 year old refrigerator was starting to vibrate causing an annoying tone. But that was nothing compared to this buzzing. Even my wife, who normally doesn't pay attention to any of this stuff and couldn't hear the vibration in the old fridge, was annoyed by this LG. Our old fridge is a welcomed relief by comparison. Pros: - Besides buzzing, it's pretty quiet with the rest of the moving parts. I could still hear it in the bedroom at night beyond the buzzing, but it was very mild compared to most refrigerators. I even stuffed pillows and acoustic foam dampening material all around it. It helped, but we could still hear the buzzing. - Decent price for a french door model. - Capacity was decent. - Ice-Maker worked well. It wasn't fast, but worked fine and produces nice cubes instead of the moon shaped ice. It's also well hidden and doesn't take up any freezer space. Cons: - Buzzing obviously - Freezer door squeaked quite a bit when opening and closing. The arms were freezing. - Freezer was a bit of a pain to get to items down near the floor. - I'm used to the fridge door closing with a gentle nudge. Have to close the left door firmly, then the right door firmly. Not a big deal, I suppose. - Slide out drawers seemed a bit flimsy. - Runs louder when Ice Maker Plus is turned on or when it is not fully cooled. But no big deal there since it's temporary. Doesn't anyone make a refrigerator that doesn't distract from a tranquil environment anymore?

This fridge far exceeds my expectations. Unlike many of the other models--make sure you actually go to a store to see how different brands make their products--the shelves in LG fridges are top notch. I would say Samsung and LG had the sturdiest shelves throughout all their models. I almost went with a few cheaper fridges, but the quality of the LG fridge was worth an extra couple hundred as I could see the parts lasting a very long time. I wanted the shelves to be adjustable in the middle, instead of having one super long shelf all the width of the fridge set at one level. That would only give me three heights to work with. Because the French Door model allows you to change the shelves' height in the middle, you can now have six height levels to suit your needs. Couple in the fact that the fridge door can fit a gallon of milk in it, well, that certainly opens up what I can fit in this fridge! I have a family of five, and we don't even use the whole thing. I do like the bottom freezer, as I can fit a lot in it, though it is in layers. My last fridge was a side by side freezer/fridge and that meant I had to really fit the freezer like a jigsaw puzzle every time we came from the grocery store. The fridge does run more (the unite comes on and turns off more) than my last fridge. It even says that in the manual. Energy efficiency is not due to usage, but consumption of energy while being used. No, it isn't always going to sound the same. It does have a defrost mode which is a tad louder than it's customary sound. I have an icebox which will make noise too, but that is an issue of how iceboxes work. Name me an icebox that is quiet for a fridge in the $1000 price range. 9 It is hard to say how much this fridge has helped me in energy efficiency, since I have just upgraded my Heat Pump, gone to propane tankless hot water from electric and installed LED lights in the home, and had my house properly insulated. My energy bill is very low... As a guy who worked in an electric company, I can say that you likely are not going to notice a huge difference in your energy efficient fridge as far as billing is concerned. That efficiency gives benefit slowly over many years of use. The outside is hard to keep clean, but that's an issue with it being Stainless Steel, rather than an LG issue. I left the packaging protectors on and it looks far better that way than with finger prints all over it.

    As of delivery today...

Prior to purchasing this fridge we had three main concerns: 1. Would the fridge look too small in the space? 2. Would we be annoyed with the lack of water feature? 3. Would the fridge have enough room inside for all that we have? As of today's delivery we are happy with our answers to all three questions. 1.This fridge sits beside a pantry wall on one side and an open entry (albeit a narrow entry) into the kitchen. The fridge that was previously there came right to the entry way and made the entrance to our kitchen feel very small. This fridge is PERFECT for our space because it gives us 3" more than the standard size fridge, which gets rid of that "wall effect" that was created by the 36" side by side fridge that was there previously. The important part of this though is that, if I didn't know this fridge was slightly smaller than average, I would have no idea that it wasn't a standard size fridge. It's incredibly sleek looking and gives the impression of any other size fridge one would expect in an average size kitchen. 2. The lack of water feature really is a personal preference. My husband and I always drink bottled water or use water from a Brita pitcher. Again, this really is a personal preference, but we aren't offended that there is no water feature. 3. I am most pleasantly surprised by how spacious the fridge is inside. On the bottom shelf you can easily fit four one-gallon jugs of milk on ONE side of the fridge. (We actually tested this at the store.) We also have 24 bottles of water on one side of the middle shelf. The drawers and pull out tray are very sharp looking and I know we will have ample space for lunch meat and perishables. As of today we are very happy we went with this fridge after hours of agonizing over what to pick.

I read so many negative reviews about even the most expensive and highest-rated refrigerators that I almost drove myself crazy, spending endless hours trying to determine if there were actually a refrigerator out there that was going to work! So far, I love this refrigerator. It has lots of space; I can move the shelves to accommodate taller items. Nice and quiet so far. I love the alarm that lets me know the door is not completely shut. Very well lighted inside. The drawers are very spacious for fruits, veggies, and meat products. I love the huge drawer that spans the width of the refrigerator which is perfect for party trays and/or other items that take up a lot of space. It keeps everything nice and cold. It also looks great -- much larger than I anticipated. I'd had a larger, side-by-side refrigerator before, and hated it. If I had a very large tupperware bowl, it took up the entire shelf. I constantly had to put items into a smaller bowl when the bowl was no longer full, in order to make more room. This refrigerator is wonderful, and I don't have to waste my time changing bowls or containers anymore. Hopefully, it will continue to run as well as it has been. I'm still rather traumatized from all the terrible reports I read online about every single refrigerator -- even those that were $3000 - $4000. The price on this was extremely reasonable. As of this writing, I could not be happier,

My wife and I have been talking about getting a bottom freezer refirgerator for a few years. We are in our senior years and bending down to try to see what is in the back of the refrigerator and then trying to reach it has gotten more difficult each year. We only have 34 1/2 inches between our kitchen cabinets. so were limited to the 33 inch wide units. We didn't think that a good french door unit would fit and were looking at single door bottom freezer units. We visited the Springfield, IL store and were fortunate that the sales person was very knowledgeable and understood our needs. We were very happy that he showed us the LG french door 33 inch wide unit. We purchased that refrigerator and it was delivered and installed a week later. We are both so very happy with this refrigerator. It has plenty of room for food, and it is easy to see what is inside, thanks to the LED lighting. The bottom freezer slides out effortlessly and everything in it is easily accessable. Over all, we couldn;t be happier wit ha new refirgerator. I even hear my wife talking to it, when she walks by it, typically saying "I love you, refrigerator". If I had known she would be that happy with it, I would have bought it sooner. :-) Thanks for the excellent sales assistance, free delivery, and installation, Best Buy. You have once again proved why you are our first choice.

I am so happy with this purchase. This was a retirement gift to myself and it satisfies all the expectations I had for it. I wanted one of those "modern" fancy, new-fangled refrigerators... but it was going to require some research to find one that would fit the width-limited space in my mobile home. This was the ONE and it fit like a glove and, yet, it has way more capacity than my old frig. I also wanted my new frig to have the French doors and the bottom pull-out freezer. I decided I do NOT want the in door water/ice dispenser because I prefer a personal water bottle and, upon examining other refrigerators with that feature, I was shocked at how much interior space they consume. I can get to my water bottle (or 1 gallon milk OR 1 gallon Margarita Mix containers) in an instant thanks to the huge capacity of the inside doors. This is one of my favorite features. Another is the fact that I can open both doors and see absolutely everything at a glance. No more digging and squatting to find something buried in my old side-by-side. Terrific! I have had this 2 months now and I love it. I am just now getting in the habit of NOT pressing my ear to the frig to make sure it is running. It is that quiet! Did I mention how beautiful it looks in my kitchen! Oh, and the ice... lots and lots of perfectly formed ice cubes. In fact, the whole freezer drawer is so convenient and user friendly. Love the drawer. Finally, the price was right. I actually found this refrigerator advertised elsewhere $80 cheaper. Best Buy matched it. Sweet!

Title says it all. Looked for 2 months at 33"fridges under 2k. Looked online and tried out in store. Toss up between this and the GE for the same price. GE has a water spicket in the fridge and adjustable shelf but when I tried it in store the drawers did not glide right! Looked closely and they did not have rollers. The drawers move smoothly in the LG, which was a must for me as the drawers in the old fridge cracked due to getting stuck all the time! They maximized space with the small bottom bins that don't block the large drawer from coming out all the way, which was an issue for the Whirlpool of the same size. Beautiful finish, though it does show finger prints and marks. Happy to live with it since the entire fridge feels of quality craftsmanship. No worries of replacing a water filter. Ice is a nice extra we did not have in our old fridge. Love the French door style compared to side by side as I can now fit wide items in the fridge and freezer. Comes with a 1/5/10 year warranty so opted out of the protection plan. Quiet as can be. Only noticeable noise lasts 3 seconds and is a slight buzz from the ice maker. Family loves the space. They hate the alarm but I adore it. The fridge yells at them when they leave the door open too long instead of me! Shelves and bins are easy to move in case you need to make room for larger items. Easy to take a part to clean if you have a spill, just read the manual. Extremely happy!

Thanks to LG, I am now on a first name basis with the repairman. I'd made at least five service calls in the first year of ownership. LG finally replaced the one I bought, with this one. Which is of much cheaper build quality and the materials are cheap plastic as opposed to the metal of my original purchase. The shelves aren't as thick, the drawers are smaller and the deli drawer doesn't fully open along the front, like the original did. Meaning I have to tip things to wedge them in the drawer now, where before, the front opened up and boxes could slide in remaing level. The freezer routinely freezes shut, the light switch freezes in the off position and you have to warm it up to get it to pop out and the main drawer won't slide all the way out. Forget sliding out the smaller shelf, it just doesn't move anymore. The tracks have iced over. The ice maker doesn't stop making ice when the bin is full and the bar won't lift anymore. Also, an ice sheet constantly forms on the back wall, no matter how often I chip it off. My repairman, Javier, tells me it's pretty common because of the high humidity where I live. It has finally died, unfortunately, it's still making the high pitched whine all the time. I will NOT be replacing it with another LG. Would I recommend this to a friend? No, I wouldn't even recommend it to someone I hated.

Loud Popping Noise and Abnormal Degassing Noise

I took awhile before deciding to write this review. I did a tremendous amount of research for refrigerators and finally pick his make/model due to the price tag and reviews. However, soon after we got it made all sorts of noises in the freezer portion. It made hissing, popping noise, and other noises. The loud popping noise sounded like a gun shot went off in the house and wakes my wife up all the time. At the time of this writing, I sent in 3-4 service requests where all three they tried random solutions. They even talked with LG engineers which their solution didn't work. I tried calling LG and gets directed to outside of the country so the language barrier is rough. I am trying to get a replacement but requires a lot of effort and verification by the technician. Technician even told me he doesn't know what the issue and really just coming by to say hi now everytime I submit a request. It has been frustrating and spent about 3-4 vacation days staying home to open the door to the technician. No luck in fixing it anytime. LG you have failed as a customer service support and your product. I should've went with a higher brand.

I started off having my eyes on a Samsung, but after opening up the doors and looking inside, the LG model was much more appealing. Granted I want a pretty basic fridge, we don't drink from it, we don't need any ice. We wanted to try out the French-door bottom freezer layout, - assuming cold air sink to the bottom, it sort-of makes sense. The delivery process went smoothly, the two guys were efficient and courteous. As we didn't even need to connect the water line, it was just a matter of plugging it in. So far, we haven't heard any loud noises which irritated some reviewers, I used a separate thermometer to confirm the temperature settings, just in case, but so far so good - it's been over a month now. My only gripe was I had to re-schedule the delivery and pay a plumber to disconnect and "cap off" the old copper water line. The salesperson was not thorough enough, because I specifically asked about the water line issue - I tried to replace my fridge before, so this time I was skeptical and asked a lot of questions (even getting the Geek Squad protection plan) because I did not want to have any complications, but the salesperson did not specify all the preparation that was necessary so the first attempted delivery failed. What is so difficult about telling the customer to have the water line disconnected before hand? I did tell him we did not want to connect the water, and I did not pay for that (connecting the water) service. So he should have known better.

Because I have a really small galley kitchen and because the space for the fridge is next to the wall, I couldn't go with the conventional size refrigerator of 36" width. This 33" width fridge uses up all the space available! Because of the french doors, you need extra width to open the doors if its next to a wall. It may stick out a bit from the counters (I have a water line in the back too) but that doesn't concern me one bit. It is so spacious inside and can store many items. The delivery went smooth thanks to the delivery guys who knew how to maneuver this fridge with the limited space they had to work with. Also, a Best Buy representative was there to assure all went smooth. I've had this fridge for a few weeks and it has been silent, working great, and looks wonderful in my kitchen. I definitely recommend it!

--This is an update to an earlier review-- Fridge was purchased on 7/16/16 as an open box/ floor display. Was told there were no problems in terms of function, just cosmetic defects from being on display. Got the fridge home, set it up according to the manual and gave it 9 hrs to cool off. Loaded it with new groceries and everything was great for 3.5 weeks. The morning of 8/10/16 I woke up and the fridge was warm, freezer was fine. Lost all of my food in the fridge. The temperature readings were displaying and error code "Er -FF" Called LG tech support at 6am hoping for a simple fix, foreign woman barely speaking English tells me it is the "freezer fan motor" and it has probably gone bad. She checks the serial number on the fridge and turns out it was manufactured in early 2014. LG tech support issued a work order to a local repair company since their warranty is good for 1 year from date of retail purchase. I followed up with the repair company, and they needed 2 days to get parts. Decided to return the fridge and exchange it for a new Whirlpool, I was not going to have a fridge that was technically 2.5yrs old and already needing repairs when I could exchange it for a better quality fridge that was truly brand new. Best Buy was awesome as always and offered to deliver the new one and take the old one since this was a disaster.

My previous LG refrigerator had a compressor failure after 7 years. The store staff indicated that that is about how long refrigerators last these days. I was very surprised by that. Also surprised that the prices have gone up considerably. We had this refrigerator delivered and it is much louder than my previous LG refrigerator. The ice maker and the compressor both are louder and It would occasionally make a rattling noise. The compressor made this very low hum that would transmit to the floor and sounded like a large truck was idling outside. The Geek Squad repairman came to see if he could make it quieter and he could not. Best Buy replaced the refrigerator and the replacement makes the same noises. Poor design in that the compressor transmits vibration to the entire refrigerator case. I resorted to placing it on 1/2 inch rubber flooring tile like is used in weight rooms. It makes the hum about 50% quieter. The ice still tastes like plastic after I have emptied the full ice bin three times. I know the water supply line is not the problem because I have sampled the water from it and it is fine.

This is the first time we purchased this style refrigerator. Love the french doors, and are still adjusting to the bottom freezer. If you organize your food correctly in the freezer, it will fit a lot more than you think. (We have a spare freezer in our garage, so the freezer space wasn't so important). We took out the huge ice bin because we don't have it hooked up to the ice maker, which gave us more space also Love the bright, open refrigerator space. We chose NOT to get the in door ice maker because it took up so much room on the inside of the refrigerator (and we couldn't buy a bigger fridge because of the limited space in our cabinets.). One main reason I got this fridge was because of all of the storage space on the doors. They are full shelves and I can fit so many of my sauces, bottles, etc so the fridge can be used more for larger items. (plus they won't get lost in the fridge). The only thing I would want differently is one of those shelves that you can push halfway back to accomodate taller items on the lower shelf. I just adjusted the entire shelve to a higher position, and use it for eggs. Did find that I had to set the temperature down to about 33 in the fridge to get the food as cold as I like it. Would highly recommend this fridge

I love this fridge! I looked at a lot of reviews and checked with Consumer Reports before purchasing. This one had good reviews. I saw some reviews that mentioned that this fridge made loud noises. I don't know what they are referring to, but this is the quietest fridge. I can barely hear it and when I first got it, I would put my ear to it to make sure it was on! The only noise I hear with any distinction is when the ice cubes drop and it refills with water. I cannot believe how much room there is in the fridge portion! I got rid of an identical sized fridge and moved my food over and had room to spare. The door shelves are easy to move around as well as the shelves in the fridge. I do wish there were some more configurations as its a bit harder to fit taller items, but I can live with it. I also saw a couple of negative reviews on the ice cubes. I don't have a problem with them. They are more square, not the long ones that a lot of ice makers have. They are a smaller cube than what you would make in a manual ice cube tray. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because I lost freezer space compared to my old one. I think they made the fridge space larger by sacrificing the freezer space. I do wish it was a little bigger.

Our fridges compressor went out after 10 years and we were looking for a fridge and quickly, cause our mini fridge wasn’t doing it for a family of 4. Loved the fridge, as opposed to the side by side style, where you can’t fit pizza boxes in too well, it also seems like we lost a lot of space with our old fridge. The freezer on the bottom helps the kids get waffles in the morning and with a little help from a stool my kids can reach the higher shelves on the fridge! I love it! The lights are extremely bright and the drawers roll very smoothly. The larger bottom drawer in the fridge area is a really nicely feature and is where we store eggs since the doors don’t have a large enough space for a larger carton. The door alarm is also a really great feature as it reminds us and the kids that we didn’t close the doors completely. Would definitely recommend!!

We purchased this refrigerator to replace one we had for over 20 years. That one was a side by side. I like this one better as you can fit larger items in the freezer than you could with the last refrigerator. My last refrigerator did not have a water filter this one does and it's easy to change. This refrigerator is much larger than the last one. We have plenty of room for all of our things. It is easy to access everything. Some refrigerator's we looked at required the doors be open all the way to open the drawer at the bottom. This one does not which was a necessity for us as the refrigerator is against a wall on the one side so we can't open the doors all the way. I know several people complained about the ice maker on this refrigerator but we have had no problem with it. Basically we have had no problems with anything related to the refrigerator. The only problem was with Best Buy in relation to it. When they delivered it they apparently threw out some door shims you are supposed to use when you level the doors. I have tried to get replacements but so far have had no success. People sound like they will be helpful with it but nothing ever gets done. I will continue badgering them until I get what I need.

I was not sure of what Refrigerator to buy and read all the various reviews and comments and decided to buy a LG although I knew little about them. The biggest complaint I found was for noise , and yet the biggest positive was for low noise ? I was confused but liked the layout and features of french door Frig. What I found was a very quiet frig, but every once in a while it makes a buzzing/rattle noise that occurs only when i close the door. Now if I open and immediately close the door, the noise is gone and a normal soft hum occurs. I think this is caused by the compressor trying to start under load. This may occur 2 times in a week and we open the doors at least 100 times during that , so it is minor . I mention it here because of reading earlier reviews and did not understand "their" problem. I love the lighting and the layout of the shelves and drawers, especially in the freezer drawer. Also like the soft ding-ding warning when the door is ajar too long .

My husband and I had a Frigidaire Gallery that worked adequately for 5-6 years to keep food cold in the main compartment and to freeze food in the freezer. But both the main compartment and the freezer were small inside, and we kept whacking our heads on the freezer door when we reached inside the main compartment. The design of the main compartment wasn't great either, although not unspeakably terrible. When we got the refrigerator, the limited floor space we had for it limited our choices severely. So we knew we wanted a new refrigerator. The LG refrigerator we bought -- a month ago now -- is externally about the same size as our old Frigidaire. The design, however, gives us far more useful space and much more versatility inside both the main compartment and the freezer drawer. The freezer drawer is below the main compartment, so we no longer whack our heads. The front doors look like steel, but they don't hold magnets. Fortunately, the sides do. So we can still use the refrigerator as a message board.
