On paper the Nano85 is a gamers dream come true... Native 120hz panel, Check! G-sync/Freesync support, Check! HDMI 2.1 full bandwidth (HDMI 3&4), Check! Very low input lag and ALLM, Check! I was buying this to ready myself for the next generation of consoles and GPU’s for PC and thought I had found my dream display... until I hadn’t. The 49Nano85UNA uses a 49” ADS-IPS which offers improved contrast compared to standard IPS panels. IPS (in plane switching) offer superior color reproduction, viewing angles and motion compare to it’s VA panel based competition, but contrast is not its strong suit. VA based panel range from the 2000:1-8000:1 native contrast whereas the standard IPS which usually hits between 700:1-1000:1. The Nano85’s ADS-IPS is around 1600:1 which is a pretty good showing for the tech, but in dark room looks noticeably gray vs inky blacks found on VA. I set up the Nano85 early in the day and was initially impressed with the image quality image seemed to have good depth. After running it through a few test of games on my PC testing both motion, input lag and Freesync I was blown away. There was a firmware update for the display that was supposed to improve VRR/Freesyn-g-sync performance, but I feel it may have somehow affected picture quality. Later that evening when there was less ambient light the IPS characteristics made their presents known. There was a faint glow throughout the display, horizontal viewing angles were great, but there were a lot of issues with vertical viewing that caused color shifts. There was a large area in the upper left hand corner of the display that cause the image to wash out and appear yellow. The local dimming on this display is absolutely useless and should be avoided at all cost. I’ve owned LG displays in the past and both time the dimming solution was top notch, but in 2012 they switched to an inferior edge dimming solution which has very few zones and causes more distractions than image improvements. There are 6 zones lining the bottom of the display and when they light up they cause large columns that stretch vertically from top-bottom with the smallest on screen light sources. Games like Death stranding, Borderlands 3 and Horizon:Zero dawn were a sight to behold. Their beautiful landscapes and comic book inspired art style brought a smile to my face, but playing games that have deep black levels and shadow detail that count on environmental story telling like Deadspace or Control we’re disappointing. Especially Deadspace which is a torture test for black levels and pixel response time. The LG was near perfect in pixel response and there was no ghosting or trailing in motion, but black levels lacked any detail. If you are coming from a VA based display from another manufacturer you will be disappointed with the use of an IPS based panel. If you plan on playing in a well lit room you’ll find plenty to like about the display, but for a dimly lit home theater this should be a hard pass. LG sells a 48” CX OLED display that has the same features for gamers, but a superior in nearly every way image. Sadly for those on a budget it will be out of the question being nearly triple the price of the Nano85. I’m hoping this is just a fluke and maybe swapping the display out could produce a better result, but the setting up and tearing down displays is a bit of a bummer. So if anyone has had a different experience that might make me reconsider going with another display it would be appreciated. The Nano85 offers a ton of options for gamers, but missed where it counted... image quality.

The black levels are horrible, local dimming causes bleed out. If you’re watching a movie with black scenes, you’re going to have a bad time. Save your money and never invest in NanoCell. Do your research

I have tried several 2020 TVs so far and ended up returning a 2021 Vizio P series for this. The Vizio as I was afraid has QC issues and mind ended up flickering and going nuts with certain scenes while the local dimming was set to High. I had one blip playing on a PC, then several on PS4. At this point I’m tired of spending $1k for a tv and getting questionable results. Samsung’s Q90ts have a lighting defect that causes the edges of the TV to have a blue/purple hue, LGs OLED carry a burn in risk depending on what your “normal” use is, TCLs seem to be lottery item while coming up short on 4k 120hz, and the Hisense doesn’t even have much for gaming features. I’ve already tried out the Nano90 and it is a bit over priced and you need local dimming on in order to achieve the contrast this TV has natively. If you don’t mind a smaller TV this gives you the best IPS panel contrast and matches most Qleds color gamut’s. Contrast does fall short to a Samsung or Sony or almost every other TV as most have VA panels. It also doesn’t get very bright, it’s about on the level as your standard computer monitor. So what makes this Tv worth 5 stars? For $599 you get a fully functioning TV with every main streaming app including Apple TV. I happen to be a fan of LGs remote and prefer it over everything else. It supports 2 HDMI 4k120 ports and has the same picture processing that the Nano90 and BX have. So you’re at least ready for next gen gaming for pretty cheap. I’ve had good luck with LGs, I rarely have problems with their monitors and have the same LG tv from early 2000s with one of the first full array local dimming panels. I trust their Nano models and up as a brand, I can’t speak for their low end TVs. From a gaming standpoint, you are getting a lot for your money. LG is putting out some of the leading 1440p and 4k gaming monitors, newly released a 4k 144hz 27” Nano cell monitor. It costs $799! This TV has a better contrast ratio that just about all of LGs IPS panels as I mentioned. So it has better picture quality off the bat and it has a very good Color Gamut. Better than most monitors including their own. You also get 4k with the 120hz refresh rate. So as long as you have the desk or wall space, I think this is a no brainer. I also have to say the picture quality and contrast isn’t too bad. Be sure you turn local dimming OFF as well. The contrast I think is good enough to still enjoy dark scenes. My TV has IPS glow in two corners that’s noticeable and the screen uniformity is ok. Playing games, colors are great as is the response time. At the price point, for better than Premium monitor picture quality, contrast, inputs, and a recent update that does have freesync present, I can easily forgive the shortcomings. If you have the money to spend then by all means go bigger and even to other brands like a Sony 900h for instance. But, if you were going to consider playing the lottery on a lower end brand, I would consider the LG since it’s reliability should be much better. So remember, local dimming off. Much better value than LGs high end gaming monitors as good as they are, all things considered. Update it it so you have Freesync premium. And, two ports for 4k120hz next gen gaming.

Do yourself a huge favor and spend the extra 200-300$ for a nicer TV because this one is average. It’s nice when it comes to gaming but your gameplay seems like it’s never gonna get you that extra pop because the color on this tv is so average and the modes don’t really make the colors pop. The bottom of the TV tends to get super hot so be careful with that. Overall it’s an average tv with the best features for anyone who likes to game. The only way to get the decent color is by manually changing the game settings for brightness and contrast but not all games have this feature so it really depends on the game.

I bought this fantastic TV a couple of weeks ago, and I wanted to understand all the features before posting a review. On 7/22/20 the latest update from LG installed which enables AMD freesync on all 4 HDMI ports. After the update I had to cycle power on the LG and then my GPU in my computer, a 5700xt recognized that it was hooked to a freesync capable device. I have been using this TV hard for the last few weeks. I have found that you must have HDR deep color enabled to unlock the high 120hz refresh rates in 1440p or 2160p (2k,4k). The TV recognizes when you launch a game, an instant game mode intialized message appears for a few seconds. This puts the TV in it's lowest latency mode. And will use the Game mode picture as a default. I think the Game Mode picture is to dark, and have been using standard or sports, they both really pop playing games, and can't yet decide which looks best. As far as the TV itself, it is a fantastic TV in the price bracket. No it is not an OLED so I will not even compare black levels. it is a edge lit LCD, and you will see some bleed in dark scenes. Where it excels, is that it supports 120 hz even on 4k, it also supports variable refresh rate and AMD freesync is now here! This means you get a great looking TV, but when it is time to game, look out! it also has 2 HDMI 2.1 jacks so a bit of future proof in that regard. I am thrilled with my purchase! This TV is worth every penny! Silky smooth and no jitters or screen tears. It also has super low latency so this is one of the few LCD TV's that can be called a gaming TV, like 6ms lag in 1440p. The regular picture on the TV is outstanding, colors look great, and if I was looking to buy the upcoming PS5 or new Xbox, I would give this TV a hard look as both those units will have AMD GPUs and will support this TV. If you game first and watch TV second you will not be disappointed!

This TV is junk. I purchased it right before black Friday, as a open box item with the only flaw being debris. I went to lighty clean it a few weeks ago with non-alcohol based cleaner and micro-fiber towel, turned it on the next day and it had spider-webbed. Called Bestbuy and they said it should be covered by LG one year warrenty. I contacted LG and the will not replace it, nor fix it because they said it was due to "physical impact", even though NOTHING has touched this tv besides a micro fiber towel. I strongly believe that it had slight moisture when I purchased the open box item and BestBuy or LG will continue to tell me that it's not covered under manufactures warrenty. I'm beyond furious, as this tv didn't even last 6 months.

I am loving my new LG tv. The sound is phenomenal and the picture quality is great. I have loved rewatching action movies and cannot believe how much better the picture is on my new LG NanoCell. I was surprised by the number and quality of LG Channels and the number of apps available. I am very happy with my tv and even the ease of switching between the different connections. I have a firestick attached as well as a local antenna. It was so easy to set up and attach everything. I had it unpacked and ready to go in less than half an hour. That included attaching the legs, my firestick, and an antenna. It was light enough till I could handle it by myself and I am a small person. I am very pleased with this product and will definitely be more open to LG products in the future. I like the remote control for it more than I thought I would. When I first saw it I thought it would be unwieldy and unbalanced. It is actually comfortable and I love the divot on the back that my finger rests in very naturally. I only wish that I could make it work with my firestick so that I would not have to have two separate remotes for them.

The 49” LG Nano85UNA looks great on my wall, has nice bright colors and looks great from any angle. I love how easy it is to setup and to access the apps on this tv. It comes with a “magic remote” which is extremely user friendly and fun to use. It even has a button on it for Netflix and Amazon on the remote. I have mostly used the TV for streaming shows, but recently used it for gaming and am very impressed. Recently, I watched a movie with my kids and my oldest daughter kept telling me how bright and colorful this TV made her movies look in comparison to our old TV. Everyone in the household agrees that it’s a huge upgrade from the previous TV we had. I am extremely pleased with my tv and will always recommend LG based on my positive experience with this tv.

Another customer who put their faith in LG for quality products and just months after the 1 yr warranty expires so does the TV. Needs repair. It costs more than half of the price I paid for it just over a year ago. The bridge has been burnt LG. You have the last of my money. Apparently, those who value their money need to avoid LG products.
