Great clear picture, not so great of sound..

    Posted .

After shopping around and weighing our options we bought the LG 55" 120hz tv. This was to replace our current 48" 720p hd tv. Never have I had a tv that's picture came close to looking this good! We bought this right before the super bowl and watched it on our HD receiver with hdmi cables going to our new tv and it looked amazing! Very happy with the tv and I believe it was a good buy ($1500) for such a big LG LCD TV. My ONLY gripe, along with everyone else, is the sound! How could LG make such a nice, new, cutting edge tv with such bad sound? The tv has almost zero bass at all, even turned up in the settings. Also seems like the sound is projected behind the tv instead of in front giving it a very mono sound. Nothing a surround sound cant fix, but it shouldn't have to! Its hard to tell how good the sound is/isn't in the store but if you don't plan on buying a surround sound like me then you might want to consider buying a tv with better built in sound. Don't get me wrong I love my tv but for $1600 I expected better sound than my 7year old tv.

    Excellent tv so far

    Posted .

First, let me start by saying that I bought my tv about 2 weeks ago from a different place when BB couldn't price match internet stores, but very recently BB's price came down. I would have bought from BB if I could have (because it's local and really close). On to the tv: The picture is excellent, no dead pixels upon arrival, The options you need for connectivity are excellent and plenty. Bonus features are pretty good (power save mode using Intelligent sensor can be a little too aggressive in dimming the picture though). I used the "PIcture WIzard" to fine tune the picture and it is excellent. The tv on the stand wobbles a bit, but it is a big tv so it's not going to be rock solid; I will be anchoring it to the wall using a cable kit & the screws in the back of the tv (as stated possible in the manual). The optical audio output, combined with Over The Air tv reception, provides excellent audio signal transfer through the tv to my receiver. My Xbox goes through the receiver for upconverted video, but the PC video goes directly to the tv via DVI-to-HDMI and is excellent. The sound coming out of the tv speakers is not "excellent" (however, it is good and the speech is clear/crisp), but I did not buy the tv nor inspect/evaluate it for its sound as I have a home theater audio system. One minor bother is that the tv's embedded tuner does not seem to have an option to display any type of tv "guide" (at least nothing that I could find) for other channel and upcoming tv shows, such as what is available on DTV converter boxes; it does however display the channel's current information, specifically resolution, aspect, program name and length, etc. One other minor bother is that it seems the tv has a narrow receiver range for remote control signals. No, this isn't due to weak batteries nor is it the TV's remote as I also tried it with a Harmony 880 remote. I just have to be specific about pointing the remote at the spot on the tv where the remote control signal pickup is. These two minor points do not affect my overall rating as I did not consider the audio a critical item in selecting a tv. It's worth the money. I'm pleased and so is my family.

A fix for the lip sync issue on this tv

    Posted .

A FIX FOR THE LIP SYNC PROBLEM . . . PLEASE READ. So my husband and I bought this television on a Saturday, took it home and put it up on the wall to take the place of our 46". We immediately noticed there was a lip sync problem. After reading many reviews on this television, we quickly figured out that we were not the only ones having the lip sync problem, we feared we were going to have to pack this beast up and take it back. We use Time Warner Cable, so I called them and they reset our HD box five or six times, it still did not help. We went back to Best Buy and bought a new HDMI cable for $97, it did not help. As a last resort I called Time Warner Cable one last time to see if they had any ideas and they offered to send a technician out the same day, being today, Monday. They figured out how to fix the problem, so if you are having the same problem please read this. They replaced our HDMI cable with a component cable and the television works perfect. I thought we had to use an HDMI cable to get the high definition, but that is NOT TRUE! The component cable they hooked up has five prongs on each end, I believe it was two for audio and three for video. This cable goes from my television to the HD box, just like the HDMI cable did. So, if you have this problem give this a try. I must say we are extremely relieved! We love the television so far, the picture is impressiive! My only disappointment was the fact that my cable company had to come out to figure this problem out for us, I feel this should have been something Best Buy could have suggested.

    Amazing TV

    Posted .

This TV is amazing...I upgraded from a 50" Plasma TV and I was surprised by how much better this TV is. First of all, the skin tones look great (my Plasma looked blotchy) and watching a BluRay movie is like being in the theatres. Also, the movement of people on the screen looks so real its almost creepy (I think this is due to the 120Hz/4ms specs)...it's WAY better than my Plasma. Even my wife was impressed by the TV and she was skeptical that it would be any better than the Plasma we bought just 2 years ago. I thought that we would only notice a difference when we watch Blu-Ray movies, however because of the fluid movement, even plain DVDs look better on this TV. I could hardly be happier. One last thing...this TV has an Eco-mode which only uses 1/4 the regular amount of power. I think it's great for when you're just bumming around channel-surfing. The screen is dimmer but it's fine for casual watching. Then when you're ready for the theater experience crank up to full mode and be blown away by the vibrant colors and fluid movement. :) ps. On the negative I couldn't really think of anything so I put the electronic hum. My plasma was a very noisy TV in comparison and drove me crazy. This TV is very quiet, however, in my perfect dream-world you wouldn't be able to hear anything...not even a low electronic hum so I mentioned that. However, even though this TV is 5" bigger than my plasma it's baseline electronic hum is probably only 10% of my Plasma.

Great TV, but beware of sound problem

    Posted .

Fantastic picture and sleek look. Easily mouted to a full-motion wall mount (yup, you can do that yourself). Great value (paid about $1,250). However, yes, there is a real lip synch problem when using HDMI to comnnect to a HD cable box. Setting the cable box sound settings to HDMI and a narrow sound field helped some. I also could not find a firmware patch of any sort on the LG site. The problem is a bit annoying, but not terrible. Also, as others have noted, there is no problem with component video cables. Regardless, like nearly all HD TVs, the sound from the TV speakers is marginal anyway. As a resilt, I paired the TV with an equally sleek i-Live Sound Bar (IT209B 3.1 channel system with integrated sub woofer) from Best Buy for about $131 and could not be happier. The lip synch problems disappeared. Great picture with great sound plus an i-Pod player and AM/FM stereo. Doesn't get much better than that! Would be nice if it were Internet compatible. However, I picked up a Samsung Blu Ray player (also at Best Buy) for about $135 with the NetFlix, You-Tube and Pandora widgets. In summary, great TV as long as you are willing to work with or around the sound problems.

    WOW!!!

    Posted .

Well, first off i'm mad because the reason I bought this when I did was cause it was on sale and it ended the next day so i didn't want to take a chance that it would go back up to $2,200 from the sale price of $1,700. The very next day the price dropped $200 more. I guess thats life. Anyways, this tv is great!!! The picture is amazing. Even regular channels look even better. I got this tv for movies and my xbox 360. and they both look super great. To all the people that have the problem with the audio not matching up using HDMI with the sound, try learning more about HDMI cables before you use one. You need to get a 10.2 GPS 120Hz HDMI cable. anything less and you will have the audio problem.

    Great TV But....

    Posted .

My wife and i been wanting a bigger tv for a while now. Looked around for almost a year. We wanted a lcd this time and a much bigger one than our plasma 42 in. So we found this one on sale. Reviews were solid ect.... THe picture is out of this world and thats what we wanted. At first it was weird, getting use to the motion blur. Note: only reason i gave the sound a 3 is that i use a receiver. I'm sure the sound is fine but come on how good are they really in any flat tv. Surround sound is the only way to go. "i could go on but i want to get to the point" Heres the BUT, I'm a graphics designer and i pay really really close attention to detail. At first i didn't notice anything but now i do. Im seeing a blur effect almost like seeing a slow bullet scene from the matrix. It's happening when people are walking or running from left or right of the TV. On there backs is where you would see this. Cant see it when they are walking/running tourge you. Basically a profile angle. Im seeing this all the time now. My wife had no idea until i pointed it out, but she saids, can only see it sometimes as i see it all the time. Anyone else out there is experiencing this problem? If it wasn't for this blur affect im seeing i would of given it all 5's. Might be a defect in my unit.

    A good buy

    Posted .

A great TV overall! I bought the tv for all of the sporting events I watch and it has been nothing short of awesome! My one problem though is the "soap effect". I know this is the way that we are intended to see movie's but...is there a way I can turn this down or even off when I want? If anybody has figured this out let me know. Other then that picture is great, haven't looked at standard but if you purchased the tv without having HD you might as well return it. This goes the same for the sound. Everyone has mentioned the "lip" sync problem....you should not have bought this tv without having a surround sound system. A proper receiver and speakers and you will not encounter this, as long as you are using coaxil or hdmi cables. I spent two months researching tv's and have owned two other hd 40 inch plus and this lg by far is the best I have had. Pound for pound this is the best bang for your buck!

    Great Pitchure Quality, Horrible Sound

    Posted .

I am happy with the pitchure quality of this TV, happy that it is a Matte finish screen, I hate the glossy ones, you get too much glare. I am returing this tv however, beacuse I am very disapointed with the sound, when people are speaking on shows, the sound of the voice is about a second behind the pitchure. Very disturbing. It is worse when played through the tv speakers, but only somewhat better when using a home theater system, seems almost perfect, but just watching normal tv, we don't always want the surround sound on. This is only when using the HDMI cables, which gives it the crisp clear High Definition, defeats the purpose of the HD if you cant use the BEST cables or best imputs, which is HDMI. We called LG, and they don't know when they will have a fix for the problem, they are aware of this software problem. By the way, customer service sucks, hard to understand any of the people on the phone, and they are quite dumb if you ask me, they have to ask or look up info for any questions. Salesman at Best Buy was VERY helpful, and knowlegable, and he offering an exchange for a Samsung Tv????? Won't have this problem anyway. I don't recommend this TV at this time, maybe after the bugs are out it will be fine.

Great TV- especially for the price

    Posted .

I have been researching TVs for about 3-4 months. I always thought I would end up with a Sony or Samsung. When it came down to the final buying decision, I could not justify paying $400-$1000 more for a relatively comparable set. Side by side with the other brands I could barely see a difference in picture quality (Sony, I suppose, had a more realistic look). Most of the differences are usually a result of settings for that particular TV when in demo mode. Once I got it home: I plugged in the HDMI, turned it on, changed to the HDMI input, and up came the perfect picture. I have not had any issues with the sound sync as others have mentioned. I do not use the TV speakers. So I cannot comment on the sound quality of the TV. I use the TV primarily when watching HDTV (through Cox Cable), XBOX 360 and watching standard DVDs. The only con I have is the TV does not sit level. It is very slightly off and when watching the TV I don't notice. When the TV is off, I do notice it. I will contact LG to see if there is a fix for this. Not enough of a con to keep me from buying the TV. I highly recommend the TV!!

Very good tv , but got some issues...

    Posted .

i had a HP plasma 42 " for 2 years , then i decided to upgrade to a better quality picture and bigger screen without spend a lot of money on it. in my opinion the LCD tvs are much better picture quality than PLASMA tvs. this TV has a better picture quality i ever seen , and when i bought that i checked so many other diferent tvs always comparing between price and features ... i decided for that 55" LG tv . i satisfied with but i did a small mistake . i have a SONY BRAVIA home theater at my living room ; that i bought 2 years ago. that home theater works on my LG tv but just for watch movies on that , not for watch my regular tv , or video games . when i watch regular tv or playing my Playstation 3 the sound comes just from tv speakers because that tv doesn't have a audio out input , that just have digital optical input( and my home theater doesn't have digital optical input ) . i really can't understand that because 99 % of tvs has audio out inputs and that tv doesn't .Now i have to buy another home theater for my tv , because i love the sound quality , and i like to hear it loud !

Solid performance for a good price

    Posted .

I purchased this TV about 2 months ago, and so far, it's been great. The setup and installation was simple (though the pre-attached base, which must be removed to hang the unit on the wall had some screws that were difficult to get out). My setup has a receiver and external speakers so I can't speak to the quality of the internal speakers. The picture quality is great, and the setup is nice. The TV is also smart enough to know what inputs have active connections, so when you switch through the inputs, the active ones are highlighted - it's a nice touch. With true HD input (1080p though the HDMI), there is a marked improvement in picture quality over analog inputs, the colors are bright and movement is clean without any obvious distortion even in fast moving action scenes. I would like to have seen the ability to play AVI or other video through the USB connection, and would also like to have seen the side connections a little easier to get to (hanging on the wall, the side connections are deep set and not easy to reach). But overall, a solid performer. No regrets.

    Great TV for the money

    Posted .

I am a bit of a videophile, so I have a tendency to find flaws before I find positives. This is a large, bright, true-to-life-color TV that I got delivered for under $1500. The major weakness is its inability to hold black very well. Most people would probably think it holds black nicely. I sit in my nearly dark room and compare the black plastic border of the TV itself to the screen and see the screen is several shades toward gray. As I would give the rest of the picture characteristics a 9.5 out of 10, I'd only give the black level an 8. However, if you're looking for a 55" 1080p 120 Hz TV delivered for under $1500, you cannot possibly do better than this TV. There is simply no better deal today in this price range!

    Great TV

    Posted .

It was very easy to set up, the menus as easy to use. The picture is absolutely great. I watch a lot of dvds on it and with the up-scaling they look fantastic, almost 3D. I've heard reports about this TV having sound sync issues but I haven't experience any. I have DirectTV and a PS3 and a Wii and they all work great with the TV's sound. I wouldn't mind having better sound equipment but it does fine in my little apartment. The only thing it really lacks is a powerful bass. This TV is a really awesome TV, especially for the value. Overall my only complaint is that you really do have to point the remote in one specific spot at the bottom corner, but once you get used to that it's fine.

    Great tv for the price.

    Posted .

Overall this is a great tv. The picture is amazing, especially on high definition. The sound is kind of weak, but we have an entertainment center so it didn't matter that much. The remote control is very user friendly and simple. Setup took about 5 mins. from the time we got it out of the box till we were watching it. People that come over can't believe what a beautiful picture it has for its size and price. You can pay a lot more for a 55" LCD tv but i think it's a waste of money. This one cost us $1495 and I compared it to other sets costing up to twice as much in the store and I couldn't see much differance in the pictures, so why pay it.

    Awesome TV

    Posted .

Me and my wife have been using a 37 inch westinghouse for almost 2 years and finally decided to upgrade. So we bought this unit paired with the Panasonic 7.1 Blu-Ray player/speaker package. It's AMAZING! Watching movies on HD on it with the Tru-motion is weird getting used to but now I hate watching TV's without it! Also a blast to have HD cables on my x-box and play my 360 in HD. Definently a must buy, even if it was the original price!!! Oh, we also hung it on the wall and we recommend getting the higher end wall mount because this TV is a bit heavy, but well worth the price of the mount!

    Much Better Choice

    Posted .

I puchased this TV after buying another make and model that I returned based on the stereo speakers cutting in and out. The LG seems to be the fit I was looking for. I did notice the TV speakers LACKED when the blu-ray is playing. I remedies this with a Panasonic surround sound system. The surround was an open box and $100 off listed price. Got home and 3 speaker cables were missing. Went back to Bestbuy and AGAIN to their credit they gave me the cables from the display. Bestbuy REALLY TOOK CARE of me. The TV with the surround sound ROCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Awesome, I love it.

Unbelievable picture. I am impressed. I connected it to Time Warner HD DVR Cable Box. I used the 5 componet connections supplied by Tme Warner instead of the HDMI. 3 video to the TV and the other 2 audio to my Dennon receiver. I have no lip sync problems. I highly reccommend this set to everyone. I did my homework for months and this was one of the 3 I decided on along with Sony and Samsung. The salesman recommended this one, Boy was he right. This is my first review ever on anything. I just had to let everyone know I love this TV!!!!!!!!

Great TV, Great Price, Great Picture, OK Sound...

    Posted .

Honestly, for the price this TV is excellent. It deserves a 5 out of 5 on everything for its price range (if you catch it on sale). I was able to get this TV for $1200 so I am really happy with it for the price. I love the trumotion feature, even though some think it makes the picture look phony. The only drawback is the sound. The speakers aren't THAT good. They aren't horrible either, but compared to my Panasonic plasma, they aren't that great. This still doesn't take away from the TV because it will be primarily used for home theater and I will be adding a full surround sound system to it, so I don't feel like I was shorted at all.
