When all of the trouble shooting steps didnt work I contacted LG customer support and was told that they are working on a fix that would take a few days. This tv is less than one month old.

To assist with the voice recognition error, we recommend performing a reset of your Magic Remote by pressing and holding the Home and Back buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds until the power button flashes, then pressing the Wheel (OK) button to re-pair it with the TV.
