Customers are saying

Customers value the ease of use, Blu-ray functionality, compact size, and compatibility of the 8x External USB 2.0 Blu-ray Disc Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Disc Rewriter. Many appreciate its performance and the affordable price point. However, some users have expressed concerns regarding the included software and the noise level during operation. The positive feedback on ease of use and Blu-ray playback outweighs the negative comments on software and noise.

Having a portable drive is a must. It’s great when you have a PC without a Blu Ray drive. It’s nice that you have a compact device to use disks.

My old computer plays blu-rays now and it works well. It's very small. You have to hold onto it to insert a disk or it moves. A little noisy spinning up.

I am giving this player 4 stars because it does play CDs,DVD's and Blue Ray very well. However, I do not like external drives. I think I am going to break it each time I load, or unload a disk. When putting in the disk, it seems like you have to put to much pressure on the motor to get it to snap in. I have found this same problem with other drives, so I can not fault LG. Set up takes a little while because of all the EULA agreements that are required by CyberLink. All in all it does a good job, and is easy to use.

I was looking for a solid durable DVD reading for use in my high school classroom. This unit fits the bill with good performance at a reasonable price. Easy install. Definitely would recommend.

Great For Laptop - Not for TV

This is great for my MacBook Pro. Works like a charm and is plug and play just like advertised. Plays every CD/DVD I've bought or have made myself. But couple of VERY important notes if you're looking to use the TV function that it has. I have two Samsung TVs (one smart / one not ) so this may only apply to Samsung TVs, but probably a safe bet for all TVs these days. 1. It does work with your TV - you have to hold the button after the tray opens just like it says or your TV won't see it. 2. It will not play any store bought DVDs on your TV. At least not without possibly installing a DIVX codec - I tried but still wouldn't "play" the DVD - You can see all the files but not in a playable fashion. 3. It will play your personal photo/video CDs and/or DVDs through your TV. I tried - it works. There you have it. I've seen the questions on here because I went through them trying to get a real answer about the TV thing before I bought it. In the end I needed it for my laptop so the TV thing was a (hopeful) bonus that didn't quite pay off. This is the best I can give to others with the same questions. I gave it a four because LG should be more transparent about playing store bought content through your TV, but it works great for my laptops and technically the TV add-on does work so I'll give that a semi-pass for now.

I'm using this writer on both my Windows laptop and my Apple Mac . I love the ease and speed of moving my photos and movies to Blue-rays. It's fast and accurate.. My photos are my life in digital, and knowing They are kept safe is comforting.

Bought this drive because newer gaming laptops don't include internal optical disk drives. Have no comment on this drive's ability to burn any sort of optical disk as its been a few years since I burned any files to optical disk media. That being said this drive plays back Blu ray movie disks just fine as long as the player software properly supports AACS (disk encryption keys). Be aware this drive requires a USB port that outputs at least 1.8 amps of power. Otherwise the secondary USB connector must be plugged into a second USB port on the host computer to supply sufficient power to run this drive correctly. This drive can be somewhat pricey when not on promotion sale.

This small Blu-Ray drive is just what we need to have an optical drive for newer laptops that don't have one. Also we only need one that can be shared with all of our computers and tablets.

My previous BluRay writer weighs 8 pounds and was like carrying around an extra laptop and power supply. I have the need to burn presentations to disks. This writer is easy to always have with me and the task more spontaneous.

We noticed a couple of Christmas movies that my wife really liked on a DVD and bought it. Oops! It was a Blu Ray. My laptop had no ability to play DVDs and my wife's could not play BluRay. Yes, we're living in the stone ages. Anyway, I'd been thinking about getting a player I could connect via USB to watch movies on my laptop. So my wife bought it for me for Christmas. After installing the software (which took a while), it worked great! Bestbuy had two options -LG or Pioneer. I like the LG brand better - known for lower EMF. Pioneer was less expensive, but LG included the software which made them about the same price.

It works as expected. Small size for a blu-ray player / writer that is convenient for mobile usage with laptops. It is a little noisy when it starts running but it is hard to notice regular reading sound.

I bought this to import all of the 400 CDs that I have on my laptop, and let me say I was impressed with the speed! It's very small and compact, and not noisy at all! I pretty much ran it nonstop for two evenings importing those CDs.

    Blu-Ray Software Sold Separately

I bought this product because my new Macbook no longer has an internal disc drive. So the purpose was to be able to play/download CDs, play DVDs, and the added bonus of playing Blu-rays on my computer, which I was never able to do before. On the front of the box, there is this ambiguous message that reads: "Blu-ray title plays on Mac OS; Software not included." So I asked one of the sales associates in the Best Buy store, who seemed to know a thing or two about this product, if that meant I needed to buy extra software, and he assured me that it was highly unlikely. But sure enough, this device will only play CDs and DVDs. Extra software is needed to play Blu-rays. When I read reviews on the available Blu-ray software programs, none of them sound reliable: Macgo, Aiseesoft, etc. Lots of bad reviews with very few good ones. Strange that Apple would not offer a decent Blu-ray software program with all of their many perks. And this is the only Blu-ray writer offered in my local store.
