Works great for backing up BR discs. I own two of the same drive bought about a year apart, this second is much quieter than the first.

Works Well as Blu-ray Player

I only use it as a Blu-ray player. It works just fine with my MacBook Pro and old Mac Pro. Plug & play. Of course you'll have to buy third party playback and burning software separately. It has a dual USB 2.0 'Y' cable in case it needs more power from your laptop. Most modern one's should work with the single connection. It's relatively quiet when playing discs compared to other brands. I use headphones most of the time anyhow. The green LED is small, it's on the front, and unobtrusive. You have to get used to the front loading tray. It pops out slightly on it's own which is good. But I pull it out slowly (just I'm paying attention and don't potentially break it). You have to hold your hand underneath the tray in order to snap the disc onto the spindle. It fits very snuggly on the spindle yet is easy enough to take the disc off. I slowly slide the tray in. It locks well. Blu-rays show up fast on the desktop. USB 2.0 won't be as fast as 3.0 for burning or installing software. But I don't use it for that. Overall just be deliberate with the tray and the disc on the spindle and you'll be fine.

works ok, included software wants your life history and a paid upgrade, uninstalled next day
transfer speed LIMITED related to using 2 USB A ports on the computer side and a USB micro on the drive (seriously)
at 100 $ would have expected USB C (fast) and a dedicated power brick
data rate about 200 mb/sec DVD data copy about 20 min
blu ray data copy an hour
probably should have bought a 3 or 400 dollar drive
your needs may vary, building a RAID server so probably moot, just annoying,,,,,, ok as a basic blu ray drive
note RAID is not a backup plan LOL

Very easy to hook up to a new PC without a disc drive. The price was good and quality seems very good so far. Blu-ray adds additional capability for watching movies on the PC.

This has proven a reliable BD/DVD/CD reader and burner. I got it as a portable device that I could move to different systems as needed and to give BD burner support for large audio project backup. A single project can easily break 20GB, uncompressed, so DVD just isn't going to cut it.
It works well in both PC and Mac. That latter was discovered when my wife had to use a Mac that was provided to her to burn several playlists for performance CDs.
I would suggest that you stick with the 25GB single layer discs for now. The 50GB are not reliable. This is a technological limitation, not an issue with this or *any* other BD drive.

It works great! Plug in and I could start using it with no issues. Plays any disc I can put it it quietly without stutters or not booting up.
Allot of people think that it will play blu-ray discs out of the box, but you will need additional software to do that. That's not a problem with this drive, it's just the way this works on PCs.

This is such a great blu-ray! I love being able to use it with my laptop or tv wherever I'm at! The software that came with it didn't work originally and i had to go through a long process to get good software but all in all it worked out and I thoroughly enjoy it!

So far this has been an extremely easy to use player. Plugged in, connected automatically and was up and running in just a few moments. I’ve used this to install older software that I still use and have disks for as well as watched DVDs and Blu-Rays with it. The quality is very good. It’s pretty quiet except for when initializing the disk on startup. I usually keep in my back pack with my laptop and it makes it very easy to to be able to watch movies while. traveling. Would definitely recommend. My only complaint after months of use is that it takes up two USB ports to operate.

So far this is a good player. Took some set up... but its pretty solid. One thing to note is this is not usb c.... so... that sucks. It also did take a lot of work to get it to play blue rays which is a bummer.

This LG USB Blu-ray drive has some great utility for using physical media one has bought within the past. Its plug and play nature all this to work on all operating systems without any additional driver installs.
Can read CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays out of the box. This drive can not read UHD Blu-rays with its default firmware.

I wish that apple would develop a blu-ray player in the computers. Since they don't I purchase this since it was at an excellent price. It is very easy to use and works excellently with my MacBook Pro. I love it.

The good: It’s fast, quiet, and slim. Best of all, you can flash it with LibreDrive to do UHD Blu-ray’s (it’ll only do standard Blu-ray’s otherwise).
The bad: It requires the highly customized micro-USB cable that has 2 USB-A ports on the other end. Since you can’t use a standard cable, you can’t make it longer or shorter to fit your needs. This would have been so easily solved with USB-C or micro-USB B 3.0.

I was looking for an external drive that would let me play my CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray. I came across this little gem of a player. It's very compact; sits unobtrusively right atop my computer, and performs its core functions very nicely. It does take up two USB ports, but I plugged it and two external HDs into a four-port USB hub, plugged that hub into a USB port on my CPU, and all the devices work just fine.
