Customers are saying

Customers value the ease of use, Blu-ray functionality, compact size, and compatibility of the 8x External USB 2.0 Blu-ray Disc Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Disc Rewriter. Many appreciate its performance and the affordable price point. However, some users have expressed concerns regarding the included software and the noise level during operation. The positive feedback on ease of use and Blu-ray playback outweighs the negative comments on software and noise.

LG Blu-ray Disc Writer: Great Value

At $74.99 this Blu-Ray reader/writer was a great value and something I truly wanted. My goal was to create personal data backups on 25G BD-R discs with a branded surface (rather than my usual 4.7 G DVD backups). This drive has handled all media capably thus far. It also comes with Cyberlink Media Suite which is a nice bonus. My complaints (which are minor given the price): 1. This unit requires 2 USB-C ports within about 4 inches of each other, one to your laptop and one to a power source. My solution is to plug the 'PC' USB into the computer, and plug the 'power' USB into a standard wall charger via extension cord. So far so good, and it's really not an issue other than uglying up my laptop desk space. 2. The actual drive mechanism is not a mechanized tray load or slot load, but the standard flimsy-feeling laptop mechanism - you snap the disc onto the tray and then push the tray into the drive manually. This was no surprise given the slim size of the drive; hopefully it will last.

I needed to replace a internal DVD drive on my older desktop. I could have gotten another internal DVD drive but was excited when I saw the external blu ray drive for such a great price. It plays as well as records. You can use CD, DVD or Blu ray. No software to download, my computer automatically recognized it and downloaded the drivers. I have not tried to use it for a TV, there are directions to do so. It is made to be used by a computer by default. It also uses a cable that is forked. It has two USB A plugs and one micro USB plug. It is short, and that makes it great for a laptop, not so much for a desktop.

Writes and plays perfectly. Light, compact, and works great with free and open source software. Note that the included software will not work if you have an existing optical drive installed. Unfortunately nothing in the documentation with mine indicated that. The free alternatives are far better anyway, so I'm giving it a top rating. I would recommend that LG provide better documentation on the included software or just not supply it.

What's to say, it's an external Blu-ray writer that's super thin and super easy to use. Connects with 2 USB connections, so watch out for that. Not 100% if both are needed to make it work. Comes with really great software to create disks, etc. Works like a charm to read and write disks. Love this device, highly recommend.

I wanted to watch my Netflix Blu-Ray discs with my laptop on a plane so I picked up this drive. Slim & light, didn't add any significant bulk to my laptop bag. Pretty much plug & play (although some software needs to be installed for Blu-Ray, all other disc types are supported at first plug-in).

Many new computers do not come with a CD, DVD or Blu-ray drive. This drive provides the perfect solution for the disc based media we all have from recent years. The additional benefit is the ability to watch Blu-ray movies on a computer. The drive is small and can sit on top of your computer or desk. The only downside is the cd tray seems a little flimsy when inserting a disk.

    Great burner so far!

I grabbed this when the Superdrive in my eight year old iMac bit the dust. I didn't have the $80-odd dollars an external Mac drive costs, and was hoping that for the price I'd at least get SOME good use out of this one. And so far, so good. Admittedly, I've only had this burner for about six weeks. But in those six weeks, I've already burned over a dozen disks. The drive is reasonably quick and pretty quiet. And every disk so far has burned perfectly. I've also used it to watch a couple DVDs and to upload a couple CDs to iTunes. Again, so far everything worked fine. I haven't needed the included software as it was plug-and-play with my Mac. It is basically all plastic, so it's probably not realistic to expect a long life. But I'm one who usually treats his toys with kid gloves, so I'm hoping to get a decent run out of it. If I don't, I'll let you know!

I bought this because my wife and I wanted to be able to watch our blu-ray movies on my laptop when we are on the go. It plays the discs without any issues and comes packaged with a nice suite of software, which is where the one star was taken off. The bundled Cyberlink software is older versions of every piece and it does ask you to purchase those newer versions. It is still usable without issues, but if you're going to include software with something I think it should be the latest version.

This exactly why I shop at Best Buy

I hate to say it but this is the reason I shop at best buy. If you want something new and crazy that nobody has and that you have to figure out on your own (even without the employee's knowing about it), best buy is it. I have always wanted something so i can figure it out. When hooking your computer to your tv hdmi wasn't very popular. I wanted to figure out how to do it. I had to be one of the first out of my friends to do it. Before all the apps to watch TV on your computer I was streaming TV through my computer through media center with a TV turner and graphics card bought from best buy. And I was just a poor college student. But I had a 15 inch Tv with recorded dvr programs from my windows media center. With two light scribe internal dvd drives that I bought straight from bestbuy. Now in 2017 I wanted to restart myself where I haven't been in 11 years. So I picked up this LG blu ray burner and software. I was really impressed with how cyberlink looked. I had cyberlink back in 2006 in my college years as well as nero. I loved nero much better. But I'm impressed with this version of cyber link. There are some issues with this blu ray player. First my computer is a 2008 hp. So I had to get a 500 watt power supply, amd 450 graphics card to handle these graphics. But once I play the blu ray, i hate the fact it won't let me use my mouse. Completely void of it. And yes i have an 80 dollar mouse bought from bestbuy. But it comes with a screen version of a mouse. When I'm about to start the movie after the box about the mouse comes on, another comes up saying that the graphics of my computer aren't supported by ratio so it wants to change it. I click no. Some reason when I click yes it slows down and doesn't work. So I click no. I could imagine why. But its annoying to even click that. And i have a 55 inch samsung TV 7100 series so i'm impressed with my TV. Once again it took a lot of things for this blu ray player to work on my computer that most people would not even have. I must say a good thing is the thing worked right away. Unlike the graphics card and other things, the software didn't give me a headache. If you want to watch blu rays on your computer this is it. I haven't hooked this up to a TV yet. So if you wanted to know about how that will work you have to read another review. I'm not sure if I'm more impressed with LG or best buy but either way if I need something advanced for my computer I can't go wrong with either.

Great Burner, A Bit Loud, Older Software

The burner itself is great, though it is a bit loud for watching movies. You also may need two (2x) USB-A (full-sized) connectors to run the drive depending on the power output of your computer. It comes with a Y-cable to allow this to work, but not all computers have two of those ports anymore. The Cyberlink PowerDVD version it comes with is pretty old and lacking. Beyond that, the drive is great.

Love it. I can use it with both of my computers and my smart tv. Even my iPad Pro works with it. It's simple and small which makes it very portable which is great for me since I am a student and always on the go. Used it to watch a movie while on my commute to school and it worked great. Just wish it had a longer cable as I have to set it precariously on the edge of my flatscreen when connecting to the tv

This is a good drive. Flash it to unlock it’s full potential and it will be ready to go playing and scanning 4k Blurays. It isn’t quiet, but it gets the job done quickly and hasn't given given me an error yet. The only thing that would make the drive better is if they changed the cable system. It comes with a USB 2.0 micro b to dual USB a, it would be nice to see a 3.0 receptacle but it’s already fast so my main complaint is it uses a dual usb a connection for power and data so to slim the package you have to buy a usb micro b - usb which can be a challenge since most micro b - usb c use the 3.0 micro b connector

Works well with windows as well as Mac OSX (tested with Sierra). Plug and play for both and in both instances didn't have to use the second USB for extra power (mileage may vary). There is a little hum to it like all these portable drives that aren't 10lbs have, but tolerable for the convenience this provides. As with mac tradition, the physical drive button will not function without dragging the disc to the trash first; but works when you have it plugged into a PC -- so accommodates both environments well.
