Coming from a Vizio 5.1.2 which sounded great but was chock full of connection issues. This LG sound bar sounds way better. Crisp audio and heavy bass. No problems as of yet. Also purchased the wireless rear speakers which is a definite must if you want that 5.1.2. Atmos Quality.

    Initial Review - Pretty Impressed

I just got my SL8Y sound bar from LG. I bought it to go along with my 86" TV. I've also been using it with Spotify and the smart features (from Google). I got to say I'm very impressed by the sound quality and the sheer power that this sound bar packs! I compared the sound quality of this sound bar to my speaker from another brand -one famous for their noise-cancelling headphones ;)- so the bar was set very high. The sound is absolutely at the same level. It is no doubt better than other sound bars I've tried. The bass sounds are full, and the equalizer presets (i.e. the one for "movies") highlight the vocals over the background music making it easy to follow the dialog,. In comparison with other sound bars that I've tried, the LG SL8Y is clearly superior. For a smaller room, the "surround effect" is more than enough. If you have a larger room, I recommend adding the two available wireless speakers to get the actual cinematic experience. Also, the fact that the sound bar doubles as a Google assistant is awesome. I removed my old Google mini and use this instead. I control my lights, the A/C, and my music just by speaking to the sound bar. How cool is that? I received this product at a discounted price in exchange for my honest opinion, and I guarantee that my comments are factual and unbiased.

Really loving my LG SL8YG 3.1.2 Channel Soundbar. The sound quality is amazing and set up was a breeze. I opened the package and was able to start listening to music on the soundbar within 10 minutes. The sound is crisp and clear and somehow it encompasses my whole family room. I also added 2 LG surround sound speakers to give it a 5.1 surround feel. The wireless surround speakers linked to the soundbar with ease. Google assistant is also a great addition. I can catch up on the news or listen to a song with ease. Watching movies has also been a wonderful experience. The subwoofer really packs a punch without overpowering the vocals like so many other systems do. Overall I definitely would recommend this soundbar to anyone looking for a medium sized room sound system. It puts out a high quality theater sound and it's sleek design is very stylish.

Great sound quality - some quirks

The speaker set was very easy to set up. I used the Included optical cable. The sound quality is great and fills the room. Our house has vaulted ceilings (~25 ft) in the living room where we placed the speakers, so perhaps we lose some of the effects from the soundbar’s upward firing speakers, but I have no complaints about the power and sound quality. I accidentally discovered the “demo mode” on the speaker which really shows you what it can do, e.g. thunder crashes that sent my 3 year old running out of the room. I have not experienced the late night announcements/reminders regarding the muted microphone that other reviews mention. QUIRKS: On the second day, the Google Assistant lost it’s connection even though the Wi-Fi connectivity was good. After some troubleshooting, I decided to restore to factory defaults and start from the beginning. I haven’t had issues since (~40 total days of use) The wireless connection between the soundbar is not particularly robust. One day after installing a mesh Wi-Fi system (Orbi) in the house, I noticed the subwoofer cutting in and out. I repositioned the subwoofer slightly and the link became stable again. I position the sub behind an open bookshelf within 9 ft of the soundbar, so I am not creating a major obstruction of the line-of-site between the soundbar and the sub. Part of the benefit of a subwoofer is the ability to hide it, so I hope this wireless link isn’t problematic for people who desire a more hidden placement of their sub. All this said, I would still recommend these speakers, just understand their may be some quirks that you’ll work around or work through.

    LG SL8YG Initial Review

    Posted .

We were excited to add the LG SL8YG soundbar to our home theater as it provides Dolby Atmos along with DTS:X options that our previous setup did not offer. After receiving the new soundbar we found the packaging to be well thought out and it provided ample protection for the contents. Initial thoughts on the hardware immediately after unpacking was that the soundbar itself seemed solidly built with a nice metallic finish, however, the subwoofer provided me with some doubts due to it being very lightweight. Install was straightforward and I found the HDMI ports to be easily accessible. PROS: -Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support -Build quality on soundbar only -Easily programmed to accept volume controls from other brands remotes -Designed to use the factory remote, LG Speaker phone app or Google Home app -Sound clarity on high resolution audio -Subwoofer bass quality outperformed my expectations -HDMI ARC capability works well CONS: -Only one HDMI input -Overhead (top) speakers lose the directional aspect a few feet away from the soundbar -Factory remote seems very counterintuitive for a “non-techie” -Standard sound setting requires a much higher volume vs. others -No clear method of checking for firmware updates -Consistent audio syncing issues that the delay settings don’t resolve Overall, we are very happy with our decision and after some demonstrations with some friends they are in agreeance. The benefits of having Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for our home is important as we were early adopters of 4k TV and UHD Blu-Ray. Please note: we received this product at a discounted price in exchange for my honest opinion and review.

Bought this as a open box item at less than half the of the new price. Stated as satisfactory condition because a small scratch and no remote control. When I received it, the scratch was in the back and barely noticeable so you can’t ever see it. A new remote was only about $20 bucks so this is definitely worth it. As far as the sound, I can see why this unit costs around 500-600 bucks new, it is loud and clear. Unit is heavy and is almost 4 feet long. It’s a big premium feeling sound bar. Can’t get better than Dolby Atmos. I paired it with my CX LG Oled and couldn’t be happier.

It came largely discounted with the LG OLED 65” C9. The dual setup with HDMI ARC connecting the two devices is great for ease of use and quality. The Dolby Atmos features are good in smaller rooms (which is where I currently use it). The sub is fairly good. On softer volumes it doesn’t sound quite as good. The only mode really worth listening in is the Movie mode. All the other ones are dull in comparison. I even listen to music on movie mode. Google assistant is also awesome on it. Love having that built-in to the speaker. Biggest downside is that when it’s hooked up to the TV the Google assistant doesn’t work via “Hey Google”; instead you have to use the Magic remote that comes with the Lg Tv to activate voice. But that’s a small consolation. Overall, if you get it discounted it’s amazing value for quality. If you’re buying full price, there’s probably better options. Also sound quality isn’t quite up to par with Sonos, but Sonos doesn’t play Dolby digital yet. When that comes out I’ll be making the switch.

I had been using a sound bar by a 4-letter company since about 2013 or so. It sounded great, but the sound was getting to be rather one-dimensional, and the "subwoofer" was a small speaker with bass tube/ports, making it kind of boomy. I was craving that smooth, rumbly home theater sound, with crisp highs and immersive surround. I picked this up by itself, and on first impression, I thought it definitely sounded better than my old one, but the bass seemed kind of weak, still, especially for what appears to be an 8" woofer. After finding actual Dolby Atmos content, however - woah. I am blown away by how crystal clear this thing sounds. For music, I prefer to put it on "Bass Blast", and everything else gets the "Movie" setting. The very next day after setting this up, I decided that I needed to experience the surrounds with it. They were on sale, so I went for it, and I do NOT regret it, whatsoever. My wife was questioning why we needed a new sound bar because the old one sounded "fine", until we watched Captain America with Dolby Atmos - we are in our own private theater, with no interruptions, and absolutely perfect sound. I'm VERY happy with this bar. I only wish I had the ability to add a second subwoofer for even more impact.

To start off I have to say that this is the best soundbar I have ever owned and the price during Black Friday week was a steal. I did however have a weird issue pop up. After about 30 minutes of use one of the speakers started to sound blown. After troubleshooting a few things and having no luck I took it back to Geek Squad to have a look. For some reason all it needed was to be played at full blast and the issue went away. No idea what it could have been but the issue went away and sounds amazing now. I'm hoping the issue does not come back cause other than that this sound bar has improved my movie and gaming experience by a lot. I did want to point out that some reviews mention difficulties with setting up the Google Assistant. Fortunately I did not have any troubles at all it was pretty easy and straight forward. As much as I love this bar so fsr I will knock out a few points in quality due to the issue I had which I believe should not be a thing for a sound bar this expensive.

Pros, very few wires Good volume Good sound quality Good price when on sale One less remote because my TV remote controls the soundbar too Cons Not a true surround, doesn't compare to my old 5.1 receiver and speakers. Yes I bought the rear ones with this soundbar Bass is on the weaker side, rear firing port instead of downfiring. I haven't noticed anything Atmos yet on compatible video I'm keeping it for the cleaner look of wiring and simpleness of being able to use the TV remote for both. Sound quality is good enough just not awesome like I had

I love this sound bar. I also purchased the rear speakers that pair to those to make a full 5.1 surround sound system. In my basement this system works great and provides a new level of immersion. This is by no means on the level of a Klipsch or similar system but if you are looking for a mid level system at a good price; this is a good one. Only criticism; the two top speakers are on the quiet side, so it is dolby atmos but unless you pretty close to the sou d bard you don't really notice.

This soundbar really is amazing! Will definitely buy anything with Dolby Atmos going forward. Makes you feel like you're in a movie theater! You can hear everything! I purchased this item in December for my fiance for xmas. He was was really looking to get a nice soundbar for our 55" living room TV. Along with it, I purchased the 2 additional speakers which I feel totally make a difference and give the surround sound feeling. Highly recommend. On another note - At the time I purchased this item there was a sale of $50 off. I just so happen to be browsing best buy's website a few weeks after I purchased and the price was down to $550 so I was able to contact best buy and got my $200 back with no hassles, just had to provide info off my receipt.

Good sound for what you get great for watching movies is which I got it for. Dolby atmos works great for my room. Music sounds good just wish the subwoofer can be controlled more then what there is for more base. Over all I got this for watching tv and movies so works well. On a side note move your Wi-Fi router away from the unit it will interfere with the subwoofer.

Wow BUY IT!! I didn't want to spend a lot for a sound bar but when Salesman in store let me here the difference between this and other cheaper models and higher end models, my socks were literally blown off. I get better sound from this small bar than my giant amp, 5 speaker surround sound system I got ride of. Easy to mount neat clean and the sound is just so clear and deep. Amazing! I have had for over 1 year now and I just love it.

The sound quality is excellent and Dolby Atmos technology can make you appreciate the big sound on some movies. We also like it for our favorite CDs. For some reason we have trouble operating it with our Harmony remote, but it's not really a problem because this LG soundbar comes with a very good remote of its own.

I wanted to setup a decent sound bar with my OLED until I move back into my house where I have a full theater system. This worked out perfectly. The sound is clear and loud. Setup was easy and it's not so much bass that you'll bother neighbors in an apartment. That said the bass is full gets gets low enough to satisfy movies and games without being overbearing.

I love the sound out of this. The Atmos does a really nice job of simulating surround sound. But it is noticeably a simulation, of course. For being made FOR the ThinQ, the fact that it is not made to mount to the tv is kind of a rip. My old Samsung TV had an optional Mount just for the soundbar. The buttons are not physically raised or need to be pressed. They are just touch sensitive. Which is probably nice for most people (and I thought would be for me) but my cats walk around it and turn it off or crank it way up. It looks nice, and the speaker and sub are both sleek and discreet, but again, not being able to mount to the TV it’s kind of just out there. It would be nice to see Bluetooth on / auto off features (connect from a phone and it turns on, and after a period of no use it would turn off on its own). Admittedly I haven’t messed with the manual, but it doesn’t seem like these are options.
