this product does require it's own power source, and yes, it does include a USB 2.0 cable.

I just bought this dvd drive with the system requirements on the box reading, CPU: Pentium 4 3.4 GHz or higher. Now, the system requirement listed online bestbuy as you will read state, 1GHz Intel® Pentium® III processor. So you tell me which system requirements are correct, the box or bestbuy.com? I have an older 2002 HP computer which is only 3.0 GHz so I may be reutning this item to the store since I do not want to take any chances it will not work properly with my 3.0 GHz pc. Also for the person who wrote the other review stating they did not buy it because they did not know if it came with cable or if it needed adapter power, if you go online and do some research there are several web merchants that show pictures of what is in the box and the usb cable and the power adapter come with the GE24LU20 dvd drive. I gave it three stars only because I did not install it but know LG usually makes a fairly good product. I also don't see any software with it though maybe there is something on the install disc.

Operates as expected. Is reasonably simple to use.

I use it on occasion to upload CDs. It's fast and easy to use.

I use this for cloning discs for schools and am very impressed with the speed of its writing and how reliably it works.

Needed for use with small laptop with no internal HD for file transfer and backup.

Was easy to setup after I realized it must be hooked direct to computer USB port, not an extension. Light-Scribe feature is limited in program designs and difficult to use.

I was happy to buy this but was surprised when I opened the box. I had a standard USB port and my instructions were in English but my power adapter had a couple of wires that are too short to fit into a US power outlet. I tried contacting LG's customer support for help on how I can get a US adapter but so far have had no luck. Their web site is down most of the time. After my experiences with their website and not being able to get LG to help me, I'm planning to return this to Best Buy. Interestingly, on LG's website they don't list the GE24LU20 so finding support is impossible. Is this product legacy and they no longer support it? I've never heard anything bad about LG but with my experiences trying to contact them I would have to say I am no longer a fan of LG and I wonder why this drive isn't listed on their Tech Support site. I also wonder how they could possibly place a foreign power adapter in a package that was clearly being shipped to the United States.

I wasn't really wanting an external CD/DVD drive. But because of budget I bought the computer withone. Had it for a few dayd never used the drive so took it back.

The reasons I didn't buy it is because I couldn't get any definite answers if this unit was powered by USB or an adapter. And if it includes a USB cable or not in the box. No info on the Best Buy web site how it's powered or if the cable is included. I went to the store and the box itself doesn't mention it either. I hope some future buyer actually mentions on here how it's powered and if the USB cable is included or not.

If you know anything about computers or drives you can not give this a good rating. This is a cheep drive. So on that you really can't expect much. Yes, it works. Yes, it's compatible with Mac. Yes, it's easy to set up. Just plug and you are ready to go. However, it is really slow. It is loud, clunky, and big for the actual specifications. Clunky is the best way to describe the sounds it makes when you download CD's or burn a disc. It's not smooth. In my opinion, based on the sound and the price, if this drive gets heavy use it will break! Also this does not read at 48x as advertised. I timed it using the same disc with my internal apple drive. I have a 2011 macbook pro (24x read) and it was significantly slower. I am differently going to return this and would not recommend this.

I got home and opened the box. First The PRoduct Had an Asian Power plug so i couldn't use it and when i got another 12 volt cord the device would not be recognized by windows nor was it recognized as being attached to any usb plug.

I just bought a new IMAC with 4-USB 3's on the back, and this machine is just not working properly. I was not able to install any software (included cd is for windows). My IMAC shows the machine is hooked up as a device, but that's it. No set up options or controls for the recorder/player. I also have tried plugging the usb into a hub which I believe has USB 2 connections, as I have had it for several years now prior to the USB 3's being available, but still nothing as far as options or controls for this machine. Anyone else having this problem??

I bought this drive based on my needs and the system requirements as stated on the box: "Mac OSX 10.5.4 or higher" My Macbook Pro is current. The drive will work, Mac recognizes it. The problem is that LG doesn't support Mac. The included software is all Windows based so no lightscribe use without finding other applications that will work with OSx and the drive. Kit includes power supply and cord, as well as usb cable for hookup.

I was looking for a USB powered external DVD writer to replace the one I had that was broken by my kids. There was nothing on the box to indicate whether it was USB powered or needed to be plugged into a power outlet. The Best Buy salesman assured me that this was USB powered and did not need an ac power cord. As soon as I unpacked it, I discovered the salesman lied and it did need to be plugged into an outlet. But, rather than return it, I ran an extension cord to provide the extra outlet. When I took out the provided power cord from the box, I discovered that the power cord that came with this device was not designed for US outlets and was completely useless. I can't write a review of the machine's performance since I never got to turn it on because it came with a power cord for a foreign country. It's no wonder this was on sale as Best Buy must have bought in bulk from a foreign supply and not checked to make sure they were all shipped with the right power cords

Although the unit states its MAC OS compatible, it does not come with any MAC software (only PC). My iMac recognized the unit and while using TOAST, I was able to COPY 3 DVD video files from my MAC DVD to this unit. After 3, I only received errors. I took the unit back to Best Buy and discovered this was the only external DVD burner they had in stock that was MAC compatible, so I picked up another of the same hoping it would be better. It was not. Almost identical experience--3 good ones and then nothing but coasters. No problems with the LightScribe.

This product clearly is not compatible with a MAC, although it states clearly on the box it is. I've wasted over 2 hours messing around with this product, on the phone with apple, LG, whom after 27 minutes on hold they disconnected from me! I can't speak for a PC user, but if you are looking to use this with a MAC, save your time and don't buy it! I bought it for the lighscribe feature.

Never have I seen a dvd rom that writes way too slow than it reads. One movie took over 10 hours and the second I gave up and plan on returning it ASAP. I've wasted 3 dvds I still don't understand why it would be named 24X when dvd formats don't go that high, a dvd 4.75 highest spead is 16 and Dual Layer disc is 8X.
